The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed computer software which uses fast Fourier transform (FFT) techniques to evaluate blasting data. The software is useful because it allows blasters to evaluate 1) the frequency content of ground vibration time history data; 2) the effects of initiator scatter on the frequency spectra of ground vibrations; and 3) the fragmentation distribution of rock muckpiles from photographs. A one-dimensional version of the software was used in the first two cases. Monte Carlo techniques were used to simulate the scatter of initiators.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

Design, development, factory test, and in-mine evaluation plans are presented for an Automated Extraction System (AES) that has been designed to fill needs which are present in the Mining Industry. The philosophy of design and proposed operation of the machine, as well as the relationships between these factors, and final machine configuration are reviewed. The AES is designed to overcome production problems resulting from the regulation of roof control, clean-up, ventilation, dust suppression, and operator protection required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The design permits more continuous operation and greatly improves operator safety. The machine is a full-face drum-type continuous miner which includes self-advancing, continuous temporary roof support. Onboard self-advancing face ventilation, dust suppression, and air scrubbing equipment are also included in the design. A further improvement over existing equipment is the incorporation of an automatic programmed cutting cycle control system. All mining functions including movements of the roof support system are handled by this automatic system.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been procuring the expansion of their underground mass rapid transit rail network at a prodigious rate since the first line opened in 1987. Four lines (149 km) are currently operating and several more lines are at various stages of planning/construction; one of these is the Downtown line stage 2 (DTL 2).DTL 2 contract C917 was awarded in September 2009 for S$320 M. On 18 June 2013 the original contractor became insolvent, leaving the works incomplete. Following a fast-tracked tender process, McConnell Dowell was awarded the S$254 M contract on 29 August 2013 to complete the works. This contract includes two underground stations constructed by cut-and-cover methods and twin bored tunnels between the stations. Each tunnel is 1400 m long, excavated by earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) at an average depth of 20 m and segment lined to 5.8 m inner diameter. The tunnel alignment is located under a busy five-lane road lined with prime residential real estate and congested with utilities.To compound the difficulty the tunnels are located within the notorious Bukit Timah Granite formation. This has a very wide range of strength, from below 1 MPa to over 300 MPa. This strength range is a consequence of six weathering grades, from soil to fresh rock, with the fresh granite causing severe abrasion problems. The various grades can occur within a very short distance of each other. Consequently, the problem of supporting a mixed face exists, particularly in the intermediate weathering grades where intact rock is encountered in the invert and corestones within a loose soil matrix in the crown, which can increase the instability by allowing the ground to flow into the TBM.The focus of this paper will be the excavation of the bored tunnels by EPB TBM used by McConnell Dowell to complete these challenging works.CITATION:Jones, G and Shepherd, J, 2014. "Northern Minerals Limited’s (ASX: NTU) flagship project is the Browns Range Rare Earth Project (the Project) located in Western Australia, consisting of a number of deposits with high value, heavy rare earth elements, in particular yttrium, terbium, and dysprosium. The deposits are dominated by xenotime mineralisation, which occurs within hydrothermal silicified and hematitic breccias. The Company delivered an initial JORC compliant resource estimate for the Project at the end of 2012 of 10,500 t of contained total rare earth oxides (TREO), which was increased to 28,084t of contained TREO in October 2013 and further enlarged to 47,997 t of contained TREO in February 2014. Concurrent with the growth of the Project resource base, significant progress has been made in developing the metallurgical process for the beneficiation and extraction of rare earth elements (REE’s) from the xenotime mineralisation. Development of the beneficiation circuit evaluated several process options and selected whole-ore flotation and magnetic separation, followed by flotation (hybrid circuit) as the two preferred flowsheets to pilot, following encouraging results on the bench of 83% and 86% recovery to a 20% TREO mineral concentrate respectively. Several downstream hydrometallurgical extraction flowsheets were evaluated. However, the following two preferred process flowsheets were ultimately selected for further detailed investigation during the prefeasibility study: 1. Sulphation bake, water leach, purification, oxalate precipitation, and/or calcination to produce a mixed RE oxide; 2. Sulphation bake, water leach, phosphate precipitation, caustic conversion, HCl leach, and oxalate precipitation to produce a mixed RE oxalate. Excellent heavy rare earth oxide (HREO) extractions (~ 90%) from beneficiation concentrates were achieved on the bench for both circuits, however flowsheet 1 was ultimately selected as the preferred flowsheet to pilot due to lower capital and operating cost. A mixed rare earth oxalate (42% TREO) or oxide (92% TREO) can be produced with low levels of Th and U of 3 ppm and 6 ppm respectively."

ONE year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a- contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

Since the late 1970s, offshore mining of diamonds has gained more importance and now more than 60 percent of Namibia?s generally high-quality stones come from those offshore deposits, with a steady increase expected for the coming years. Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

Most of the production of copper in the United States comes from a few large companies. Often overlooked, however, are the more numerous small mining operations, which collectively produce a significant portion of the nation's copper. The objective of this paper is to describe the operations of a small mining company - Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation - how it views its place in this industry of giants, how it exploits the advantages offered by its relatively small size, and how it protects itself from the hazards being small introduces. Environment is, of course, a critical factor for such a company because it does not have the resources which help large companies weather periods of financial stress. Ideally, this environment is characterized by a heal thy economy, strong product demand, relatively stable prices , adequate grades and tonnages of ore commensurate with depth and over-burden, ready access to utilities, a dependable labor pool, and suitable technical "know how". When the environment is right, properties which were previously uneconomical to operate attract the attention of companies whose primary interest is a return on investment commensurate with risk over a reasonable period of time. Naturally, the amount of the investment and the duration of operation determines the size of the company which would be interested in such a venture. Such is the case with Ranchers Bluebird Mine at Miami, Arizona - a small property operated by a small company in a favorable economic environment.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

In this paper we revisit the well known "Ultimate Pit Limit Problem" and suggest an alternative approach for fast and efficient solution. We follow the approach originally proposed by Johnson and Barnes (1988), but utilize the "Excess Scaling Algorithm" in solving the equivalent maximum flow problem. This algorithm provides significant increases in speed and reduction in memory requirements over the well known Labeling Algorithm of Ford and Fulkerson (1956), enabling one to solve large problems with relatively small computers. We present results of a series: of benchmark tests using this approach against the well known Lerchs Grossman algorithm as well as a brief description of the new algorithm.

In the planning stage of a tunnel, due to limited available technology in the geological survey and the financial restriction, tunnel supports are often designed from unsatisfactory information, and the tunnel construction is started. Therefore, "observational construction" is carried out in the construction stage, in which the design is rationally verified and modified by observations/measurements. Moreover, the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face must be predicted for efficient and safe tunnel construction. The authors have examined effective prediction methods to the ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face under construction of a mountain tunnel (Aoki et al., 2010) in view of the established method (Schubert et al., 1995). Though the prediction method of Schubert et al. requires the displacement in the direction of tunnel axis, it is difficult to obtain its accurate data by the electro-optical distance meter. Then, we have proposed a method that uses tilt sensors installed at the tunnel crown near the face to obtain the slight tilting information. To measure inclination of the tunnel crown, this inclinometer was originally developed as a daily management measurement, such that the geological condition and its possible change behind the face could be detected early, and a steady advance and construction safety could be ensured. This paper describes the method of forward prediction mechanism and advantages of this proposed method. It then presents the typical results of a field demonstration test at a tunnel under construction. Lastly, the predictable range from the stratum boundary at which ground stiffness changes are discussed based on the results of three-dimensional numerical analysis.

"Pyhäsalmi Mine in Finland has a long history of continuous process development. The concentrator processes Cu-Zn-sulphide ore with high recoveries. An on-line flotation simulator has been developed to maintain and further improve the flotation performance. Consisting of a flotation kinetic dynamic model, and interconnected with process control software, the simulator can be used for training new control room operators in various scenarios. For daily operation, the model parameters are continuously adapted to take into account the changing process conditions. On-line simulator tracking the process can provide the process operator new information in several ways: a) values of unmeasured process variables are obtained by displaying the corresponding simulator values, b) predictions of future process states and outputs are calculated and displayed, c) information of changing process parameters can be used as an indicator of e.g. change in the processed ore type. This paper describes the adaptive simulation system and its usage at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator.IntroductionPyhäsalmi massive sulphide orebody is located in central Finland. Operation of the mine started in 1962 and it is currently producing copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and sulphur (S) concentrates. The concentrator control and optimization system has a long history of successful continuous development during the past decades (see e.g. Huuskonen & Moilanen, 2010). An on-stream analyzer has been a part of the automatic process control since 1968 (Lähteenmäki, Miettunen & Saloheimo, 1999). First control algorithms based on a flotation mathematical model were developed in 1971 (Koivistoinen & Miettunen, 1985). In 1990’s the development of a froth machine vision systems started (Kaartinen, 2009; Kaartinen, Roine & Hätönen, 2009). More recently Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy has been involved with several national development projects dealing with particle size distribution measurements (Kaartinen & Tolonen, 2008), spectral analysis of flotation slurries (Haavisto, Kaartinen & Hyötyniemi, 2008), and dynamic simulation of flotation processes. The latter topic is further elaborated in this paper."

First, I want to thank my co-author, Leon del Valle for his help and collaboration in the preparation of this paper, and also ORICA S.S. our explosive supplier and contractor at the Refugio mine site for their collaboration. The Southern Andes Mountains present a number of challenges for mining operations, and associated blasting operations. This region of the world, in Peru, Bolivis, Chile and Argentina is an area of rapid growth in precious and base metal mining, and will continue to be a large growth area for explosives products and services. This paper will attemp to discuss some of the special considerations encountered in operating a safe and effective blasting program at high elevation and under extreme weather conditions, as well as outlining a recent improvement in blasting techniques at the Refugio gold mine in northern Chile. This paper is presented from a mine operator's perspective, which may be a bit of a disappointment for some of you interested in a detailed technical review of our program. It willl, however, provide an insight in how in-pit blasting techniques tie into the metallurgical processes at a modern precious metal mine and thereby become a key elemnet in its success.

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

In August 2006 a technical alliance was formed between Orica Mining Services and Century Mine to provide blasting solutions. The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

Longwall recovery under weak roof conditions could have considerable delay if the immediate roof is weak and deteriorates during screening. A pre-driven longwall recovery room is a feasible solution to minimize the impact of longwall move on production. In this longwall recovery project, a 16-ft recovery room was pre-driven to cover screening, and the shearer cut another 16 ft outby to reach the final recovery line. The pre-driven recovery room was carefully monitored as the face was approaching it. The longwall face operated very well as it cut into the recovery room. The recovery process took about 13 days, and considerable time was saved compared with the previous panel. The support in pre-driven recovery room was designed to handle both front abutment pressure and weak immediate roof conditions. Pumpable standing support was used to support the cantilevered roof as the fender pillar narrowed and collapsed when the face cut into the recovery room. To ensure the stability of the recovery room, 3-D computer modeling was used to evaluate the support system. Abutment pressure, critical fender pillar width, bolting system, pumpable cribs and shield support were considered in the model. The recovery room was carefully monitored during longwall recovery. Roof-to-floor convergence and crib convergence were recorded every shift as the longwall face was approaching the recovery room. Roof, floor and pillar activities and crib performance were also observed as the face cut into the recovery room. This paper presents the support design for the recovery room, evaluation of the support system through computer modeling, and details of the monitoring results.
