Biological treatment of metals-impacted water using sulfate reduction is a viable means of treatment that has been applied in pilot and full scale at numerous projects. One of the fundamental challenges with this type of treatment is the selection of an appropriate substrate to support the sulfate reduction process long-term. The substrate degradation products provide a carbon source and an electron donor for metabolism by sulfate-reducing bacteria and consequently organic characteristics are critical; however, the physical attributes of the substrate are equally critical to an efficient and optimized substrate mix. This paper explores the affect of particle size (a.k.a. grain size) of several substrate mixes on the treatment efficiency of sulfate reducing treatment systems. Substrate selection can be separated into two phases of evaluation, the primary selection phase and the secondary optimization phase. The primary selection phase considers such fundamental attributes as source availability, economics, bioavailability and longevity. These fundamental activities are conducted in order to identify potential candidate ingredients of the substrate mix which are regionally available, economically viable and consistent with the biogeochemical aspects of the project. Recent work has been conducted in the development of testing protocol for organic substrates to quantify bioavailability (Martinez Hernandez et al. 2010, Place et al. 2006) as part of the primary selection phase. Once the substrate ingredients have been selected based on the primary criteria, the mixture of these ingredients is then developed based on an optimization process, including consideration of the substrate ingredient?s particle size distribution.

The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. THIS paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the headingand-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading.

Near the port city of Whitby in the north-east of England, Anglo American (AA) is setting up the deepest mine in the UK, which will have a depth of 1,500m. The purpose of the project is to extract and transport polyhalite, both underground, and to market it globally. As part of the construction works, BAUER Technologies Ltd, the UK subsidiary of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH, constructed three different shafts using the diaphragm wall technique, with depths of up to 120m. In order to ensure the specified vertical tolerance of maximum 200mm, several measurement methods were applied, and the results were documented in a 3D model. Complex de-sanding plant technology and specially developed polymer products were adopted to regenerate the trench supporting bentonite-slurry.

This study involved a review of bonding and bond release practices in the states of the Eastern and Midwestern Coal Provinces. Data was collected from regulatory authorities and site visits to document the bonding and release procedures in the states related to achieving successful reclamation. The regulations related to PL95-87 were reviewed. The analysis included suggested modified or new bond release criteria, a review of applicable bond release inspection techniques was prepared, a conceptual graduated bonding system and incentive procedures for reclamation of surface mine sites to alternative or higher land uses. A number of conclusions and recommendations for further research were included. A detailed bibliography and a glossary are included in the report.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THE Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan B. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37° 26’ 38" - north, and long. 119° 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 6 1/2 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 8 1/2 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence I mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills on the Merced River. Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 278 natural gas samples from 14 States. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1973 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 Fifteen previous publications have presented the results of 10,201 gas analyses prior to 1973. The first three, Bulletins 486,4 576,6 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 12 publications,7 which were issued as information circulars, supplement the three bulletins and contain 4,983 analyses of samples collected since 1960. This publication is the 13th publication supplementing the three bulletins.

In modern iron pelletizing plants fuel consumption has been optimized to such an extent that only minor savings can be expected in the future. Inspite of this fact, different process parameters were studied with a mathematical model and firing tests. The influence on fuel consumption and productivity was established. Furthermore, the adoption of simplified firing patterns was investigated, in particular for coal firing. In view of high costs of oil and natural gas, only substitution of these fuels by coal can substantially reduce production costs. In existing plants partial replacement of oil and gas can be achieved by addition of coal to the iron ore feed and by firing the pellets with pulverized coal. Two systems have been developed for the Lurgi- Dravo travelling grate process which enables coal to completely replace oil or gas. This paper describes in the first part the potentials for fuel savings available in the Lurgi-Dravo process. In the second part, different techniques for the use of coal as fuel in iron or pelletizing plants and in particular the recently developed Lurgi Multistage Coal Injection and Combustion Process (LMC) are discussed. Combined with the LMC process, a wide variety of iron ores and coals - also with high ash contents - can be used in the Lurgi-Dravo travelling grate process.

Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. Conveyors constitute a critical artery, essential to the successful operation of most ore processing plants. Technological progress is permitting the recovery of metal from low grade ores which previously could not be worked economically. Significant in this progress are improved material handling techniques highlighted by the frequent and successful application of conveyors. From the standpoint of the plant manager the successful conveyors are those he never hears about. They continue to economically transport the loads applied to them, requiring only routine maintenance attention. When such conveyors are subjected to closer scrutiny you will find that they have been carefully selected and engineered to perform the required function under the anticipated conditions. Among the primary elements in a conveyor drive are the electrical motor and the speed reducer. The selection of these elements can be aided by the systematic consideration of several factors. These factors which focus attention on the critical operating conditions, will be individually evaluated and their effect upon the selection of the electrical drive system and speed reducer analyzed.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay. Five cross passages (CPs), spaced at 200m centre to centre, provide emergency access between the two tunnels, as shown in Figure 1.The CPs were constructed by open-face excavation methods but the particular geological conditions at the project site (loose and variable carbonate sedimentary strata with very high permeability) required specific ground treatment solutions to provide safe excavation conditions and to ensure the long term serviceability of the permanent works construction. Where access allowed, ground treatment was performed from the ground surface using deep-mixing techniques; however, at two locations (CP2 and CP3) surface access was restricted and ground treatment by freezing, performed from the tunnels, was required. The CPs are 12.3m long with an excavation diameter of 5.8m and are located up to 30m below the water table partly or wholly within the Key Largo limestone (termed Layer S7 in the ground model). Layer S7 is a coralline limestone having a metastable honeycomb structure and high variable porosity. At CP2 the upper portion of the excavation was within the overlying Anastasia Formation limestone (Layer S6), comprising a highly permeable coquina. The geological profile along the project is shown in Figure 2.This paper presents aspects of the freeze design and the risk mitigation necessary to successfully achieve the construction of the CPs in the unique geological conditions."

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

"AbstractAttention is drawn to the ventilation problems arising from the use of diesel vehicles underground, especially in view of the fact that diesel fumes in combination with other pollutants may be more harmful than diesel fumes alone or the other pollutants alone.Means for minimizing the harmful effects of using diesels underground are listed, and the quantities of air' required in mines in which diesel-powered vehicles are used are discussed. Mines are classified in three categories on the basis of severity of ventilation problems, and statistics are given for these categories.Details of the various components contributing to total ventilation needs are given, and the ventilation needs of individual mines in the three categories are listed. A description is given of the principles according to which main ventilation coursing is planned and the selection and siting of main fans is discussed.General Considerations in the Use of Diesel-Engined Vehicles UndergroundIN ORDER to reduce physiological hazards, present and latent, to workers in mines in which extensive use is made of diesel equipment underground, it is important that mine ventilation systems reduce the concentrations of rock dust, diesel fumes and particulate matter as rapidly as possible to an acceptable level in all parts of the mine.There is some evidence that the long-term effects of a combination of the above pollutants are greater than those of anyone of them alone, which makes the problem even more pressing."

Dissolution rates of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were calculated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The calculated dissolution rate decreased by a factor of 3.2 after the electrode was passivated. The results presented in this work indicate that the reduction of Fe3+ was the rate-controlling step for fresh CuFeS2 electrodes while the transport of cations within the passive film limited the dissolution rate for the passivated electrode. The transfer of cations at the electrode/electrolyte and passive film/electrolyte interfaces did not affect the dissolution rates of the fresh and passivated CuFeS2 electrodes, respectively. The catalytic effect of pyrite (FeS2) on the dissolution of CuFeS2 continued after the passivating treatment. The contact of fresh and passivated CuFeS2 electrodes with different FeS2 particles resulted in increased dissolution rates, due to an increase in the reduction rate of Fe3+.

Though the Peirce Smith (P-S) converter is a traditional type of furnace, continuous improvement in its mechanical and electrical design is still Kumera's approach. Efforts are made particularly on the following aspects: converter head shape for easy fabrication and structural strengthening, oxidation air swivel joint for low pressure drop and low noise level, wind box for even air distribution to tuyeres, drive unit and its control for reliable and handy operation. These improvements have successfully been applied in recent P-S converter deliveries.

This work is a first-order study to assess the suitability of an organic acid lixiviant to extract rare earth elements (REE) from coal preparation fines refuse sourced from a Pennsylvania mine with a total REE of ~ 300 ppm. The extraction of REE using an organic acid, in this case 0.1Mcitric acid and 0.5Mtrisodium citrate solution, is compared against 0.5M(NH4)2SO4, 1MHCl, 1.2MH2SO4, and 0.5Methylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Ashing the coal waste material prior to leaching tests with the citrate solution nominally improved REE extraction. Buffered citrate solution recovered 7% of the total REE in the as-received Isabella Fines as compared to 11% in ashed samples, whereas (NH4)2SO4 extracted 5–6%, respectively. EDTA recovered up to 33%of the total REE, most likely due to the higher coordination chelate bond. Mineral acids, however, outperformed the organic acids on ashed material (16–52%REE recovery), suggesting that organic acids may not be a suitable competitive option for REE extraction from these types of feedstocks.

Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed.
