The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

Geotechnical monitoring is a key element of the successful management of a block cave mine. The interrelationships between production and various monitoring datasets are often not realized due to a lack of data integration and appropriate 3D visualization. Timely delivery of information to ensure best cave management practices is only possible with an integrated cave management system. At Rio Tinto, a state-of-the-art cave management system (CaveCAD) has been designed and developed in cooperation with Mira Geoscience to integrate and analyze vast datasets and report this as instructive information regarding the current \u201cstatus\u201d of the cave.

IN the fall of 1929, a paper was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute entitled The Fuel Research Laboratories at Ottawa and the Scope of Their Investigations. At that time, the equipment of the laboratories had not been completely installed, but the regular routine work was being carried on as usual, and several large-scale investigations were being conducted. It is now five years since that paper was presented, and it seems fitting that a brief description of the investigations which have been undertaken, together with results-especially those which have reference to western Canadian fuels-be presented at this Annual Western Meeting. The coal mining industry of western Canada has, within the past few years, suffered many unfortunate vicissitudes. The replacement of coals by oil, for bunkering ships, for operating railway locomotives, and for heating, has weighed heavily on the coal mining industry of British Columbia and Alberta generally, but more particularly in the Crowsnest Pass area and Vancouver-and hydro-electric developments have also left their impress. With a full appreciation of these conditions, the Department of Mines planned research and large-scale investigations which it was considered would be of the greatest benefit to the coal industry, and the results have amply justified the plans and anticipations. The fact, however, must not be lost sight of, that the application of the findings of certain of these investigations would not have been feasible had not the Federal Government assisted the transportation of coal by the application of railway subventions. These subventions permitted Canadian coals to compete at competitive points with United States coals, and it must be admitted also in this connection that certain of the collieries which have benefitted, both as a result of the railway subventions and the investigations conducted by the Fuel Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines, made special efforts to produce a coal which was capable of competing with the American product, by special preparation at the mines.

Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

"INTRODUCTION These safety standards for anthracite mines have been prepared for use as a guide for Federal inspectors. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7282 issued in May 1944 and used as a guide in Federal inspections. No provision made in these safety standards should be construed or operate to nullify any existing State statutes; they are intended to supplement the State statutes in the interest of increased mine safety. Mines are inspected in accordance with the Federal Coal-Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082. Any unusual hazard noted by an inspector and not covered by these standards will be discussed in the inspection report, and suitable remedial procedure will be recommended.ARTICLE I. - SURFACE STRUCTURESSection 1. Breaker and cleaning plant.Electric switches and controls in breakers and cleaning plants should be enclosed.Where coal is dumped at or near air-intake openings, reasonable provisions should be made to prevent the dust from entering the mine.Section 2. The effect or various oxidants on gold and silver dissolution in thiourea solutions (0.05 M in H2SO4) was studied using the rotating disc technique, a.t 2s c and 600 rpm. These studies were carried out at constant (4:1) initial molar ratio or thiourea to oxidant concentrations, to produce 50 % thiourea. oxidation. The initial dissolution rate of gold was approximately four times higher in the presence. of ferric sulfate (5.37 x 10-3mg cm-2 s-1) than in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium persultate (K2S2O3), or monopersulfa.te (KHS06). The dissolution rates for silver were considerably lower than gold for the same oxidants. Oxidation of thiourea in the presence of peroxygen and persulta.te compounds is a. fast reaction and it is completed in less than ten minutes. On the other hand, the oxidation or thiourea with? ferric.sulfate is slow, yielding a second-order reaction rate constant k = 6.09 I mol-1 h-1. Sulfur formation in the ferric thiourea system begins when ferric ion reduction approaches to completion. With hydrogen peroxide, sulfur is observed at lower thiourea concentration than ferric. Suifate. The presence of a large excess or free thiourea i.e., s to 20 % thiourea oxidation) retards sulfur formation and maintains favorable dissolution rates. Finally, carbon-in-leach experiments indicate that thiourea solutions a.re stable for several days, with ferric sulfate or hydrogen peroxide. The dissolution rates of gold and silver doubles in the presence or activated carbon when hydrogen peroxide is used as oxidant.

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

"Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."

This year the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers has chosen to give me its Robert H. Richards Award, a distinction which is widely regarded as the highest honor in the field of mineral engineering. I am deeply moved by this tribute, which suggests not only regard for my service to the profession but also the affectionate esteem of my fellow mineral engineers. You have made me happy at the prospect of the permanent association of my name with that of Robert Hallowell Richards and of the distinguished recipients of the award, Arthur Fay Taggart, Frank R. Milliken, John F. Myers, Edward William Englemann, C. Harry Benedict, Edward W. Davis and Arthur W. Fahrenwald. I wish to thank you all for an honor so generously bestowed. Professor Richards is known to us all as a legendary figure, and we can read about him in the Richards Memorial Volume of our Transactions. Some of us have even had the good fortune of knowing him. I count myself among those lucky few. In its intangible attributes the Award recalls those things for which Professor Richards stood: for Science in Art, for thoroughness, for meticulous accuracy, for bold imaginativeness, most of all for professional integrity. Now, as in his day, these attributes are central to an engineer's creed. They are appropriately needed in a formulation of a definition of the mineral engineering profession.

This article presents the results of an analysis of grinding of 1:1 mixtures of 4x8-mesh quartz and limestone in laboratory ball and rod mills. From these experiments, the amount of energy consumed in grinding each component of the mixture was determined. In the ball mill, limestone consumes slightly more energy than quartz in the initial stages of grinding, but as the grinding proceeds quartz begins to consume a slightly greater fraction of the energy. The postulate that the fraction of energy consumed by any material in a ball mill is proportional to its volume fraction has been shown to be approximately true. On the other hand, in a rod mill energy consumption by quartz and limestone is equal only in the initial stages of grinding, with energy consumption by quartz greatly exceeding that by limestone as rod milling proceeds. Preferential energy consumption in tumbling mills has been discussed in a number of papers. For example, from an analysis of the kinetics of comminu- tion in ball mills, Arbiter and Bhrany' obtained rate equations based on the postulate that only coarse particles are ground, indicating that fine particles are protected from the action of the balls by coarser particles. In rod mills this protective action is much more pronounced than in ball mills. Recent studies on the rod milling of limestone-quartz mixtures have shown that this protective action causes the mineral with the lowest grindability (quartz in this instance) to consume the greater fraction of energy. 2 However, in the ball milling of mixtures it has been postulated that the consumption of energy by one of the constituents is determined by its volume fraction within the mill. 3 Possibly this hypothesis may be a simplification of the ball milling of mixtures since the protective action suggested by Arbiter and Bhrany may result in some preferential energy consumption by one of the constituents of a mixture. The objective of this study has been to determine preferential energy consumption in laboratory ball and rod mills by analyzing size distributions of each material in the products obtained from grinding 1:l mixtures of quartz and limestone. Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The steadily increasing interest in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) as a legitimate alternative comminution technology for hard rock applications has led to a proportional increase in the demand for trade-off studies comparing HPGR with more established approaches, typically SAG-based but including AG and stage-crushing designs. The primary trade-off is between a) the higher capital cost typically incurred with HPGR-based designs and b) the higher operating costs of the more traditional technologies. However, if, through circuit design innovation, the capital cost penalty of HPGR circuits could be eliminated or reversed, then the need for trade-off studies would diminish.

The ISEE Blasters Handbook gives guidance on the level of air overpressure likely to cause occasional window breakage (151dB) and general window breakage (171dB). A long-term safe level of 140dB is also suggested. This guidance is widely used by demolition and other contractors to assess damage zones in the region of explosive applications employing unconfined charges. Other reference material gives more detailed guidance relating to window area, aspect ratio and glass thickness. Despite the guidance given in these references, complaints by members of the public regarding window breakage continue to be received by explosives engineers from air overpressure levels well below the longterm safe limit. Such complaints are not limited to the use of unconfined charges but can even be generated from the highly confined use of explosives in quarry blasting. This paper describes a series of experiments with explosive charges fired in unconfined conditions close to various window configurations. The aim of the work was to test the existing guidance levels and to extend the knowledge base in this area. Topics covered include the role of differential pressure across windows in the walls of an enclosed space such as a room.

Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

Contract Incentives have long been employed in the underground hardrock industry as a tool to influence employee performance, enhance productivity, and control labor costs. While traditionally structured to establish a direct correlation between performance and compensation, many contract programs have evolved into elaborate systems that promote strategies often viewed as independent of productivity. This paper presents the findings of research into these contract incentives and was conducted with the cooperation of 33 mines utilizing a spectrum of employee compensation and incentive programs. Emphasis of this analysis focuses on the types of production contracts observed and their role with respect to employee earnings.

Rock preconditioning in advance of mining was shown to be an effective means of rock-burst control based on the results of a field demonstration carried out on the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Company's Star mine. Mining through the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly reduced rates of released seismic energy and no bumping or rock bursting occurred within the preconditioned zone. Mining above the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly increased rates of released seismic energy and rock bursting, particularly where the vein became very narrow in waste zones. This increased incidence of rock bursting points out the need for stope preconditioning to be carried out on an entire stope block basis. The data obtained from the monitoring of the mining above the preconditioned zone on the 7700 level will be extremely useful in evaluating any future stope block preconditioning experiments on the lower levels or the Star mine.
