The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

Battelle Memorial Institute participated in a program for the General Services Administration aimed at developing a nickel-cobalt separation process that could be integrated in the Nicaro nickel plant. At the time the programwas being carried out, the Nicaro process was a straight-through operation, in which the ore was reduced and leached, after which the pregnant solution was boiled to produce a so-called "bulk precipitate" which contained virtually all of the nickel and cobalt which had been dissolved in the leaching step. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in Nicaro ore is approximately 15 to 20:l. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in the finished product had to be 100:l or higher to meet specifications. Because the Nicaro process embodied no nickel-cobalt separation step, the only way that a bulk precipitate of the specified nicke1:cobalt ratio could be produced was to so adjust roasting and leaching conditions that nickel would be selectively leached and most of the cobalt would be rejected with the tailings. The required selectivity, however, was achieved at the expense of nickel recovery, which was 5 or more per cent less than might have been obtained with the existing equipment, utilities, man power, etc., had selectivity been no object. The over-all purpose of the program was to develop a separation step that could be fitted into or onto the Nicaro facilities and which would permit the manufacture of a product that would meet the desired specifications and still permit the recovery of a maximum amount of nickel. Battelle suggested that this might be accomplished by reprocessing off-specification bulk precipitate and specifically suggested the process based on ammonium sulphate leaching followed by hydrogen reduction of the leach solution according to techniques developed commercially by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited. Such a process would not only satisfy the objectives of the research but would present two additional advantages. (1) It would produce a separate cobalt product which could be further processed into metal, alloys, oxides, or salts. (2) It would yield nickel in metallic form which might be more generally marketable and command a slightly higher price per unit of nickel than the Nicaro oxide product. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the process. FROM the earliest times when our prehistoric ancestors laboriously fashioned crude tools and weapons from meteoric iron until our day when we manufacture steel in 150-ton open-hearth furnaces, the production of iron and steel has played a dramatic and important role in the development of civilization. Progress in the science of refining iron ore into iron and steel was painfully slow for many centuries. The keen scimitars of Damascus, the broadswords of the English knights, the coats of mail of French knights, and the Iron Pillar of Delhi are well¬known examples of medieval metallurgical technique. Expense and the scarcity of raw materials originally limited the distribution of iron and steel products. It was not until the nineteenth century that a determined effort was made to adapt the use of steel to peaceful pursuits. The spectacular and rapid strides made in the manufacture of steel during the last hundred years were hastened by the invention during the decade 1860 to 1870 of two great steelmaking processes-the Bessemer and the open-hearth process.

Although for many years considerable attention has been given to devising safe and efficient methods of using explosives, with some success, relatively little has been done to provide satisfactory storage facilities for them. This was known long before the present war began, but it was emphasized during the past 30 months? inspections of explosive magazines by employees of the Bureau of Mines in administration of the Federal Explosives Act of December 26, 1941. These inspections have revealed woeful in adequacy as well as definite hazards and the urgent need for obtaining better storage facilities either by remodeling old magazines or constructing ink new ones that would afford suitable protection for the contents against theft, fire, deterioration, and detonation. The purpose of this paper is to offer suggestions and to show by sketches and drawings some of the fundamental features of suitable magazines. Type of construction and available materials differ with different; localities, but the information herein contained can be applied to most magazines, whether already constructed or the construct: on of which is planned. It is hoped that this information will be helpful and will aid persons who are trying to provide suitable storage for explosives end detonators. It is also hoped that States and cities will be made aware of the unbelievable laxity practiced in storing explosives in the United States and will take some remedial action.

Recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid is a newly developed source of uranium. Many processes have been developed but the OPAP (octylphenyl acid phosphate) process is still the valuable one because the OPAP reagent compound has the high extraction ,power and cheap cost. The OPAP process was already studied by murthy(1) in 1970 and its complete process flow sheet was first fulfilled by F.T. Hurst(2) in 1974. WCFC(3) (western Co-op Fertilizer Ltd.) in cooperation with ESI (Earth Science Inc.) set up the OPAP uranium recovery pilot plant in Canada in 1978. We have studied the OPAP process since 1974 and first improved the OPAP extractant by proper adjustment of the DOPAP/MOPAP mole ratio with CH3OH-H20 method, resulting in shortening the phase separation time and avoiding the precipitation occurrence in our process. Second, we utilize the reduction and oxidation occurring by DC power supply on either side of the membrane to achieve the extraction and stripping at the same time. An improved OPAP process in which high recovery yield of uranium and acid uncontaminated by iron has been developed in our laboratory.

The world’s first active power demand stabilization system for a 3-electrode electric arc smelting furnace was commissioned at PT Vale Indonesia in December 2012 on Furnace No. 2 using an SPLC (Smart Predictive Line Controller). The SPLC technology in combination with the Furnace No. 2 rebuild and other upgrades has enabled PT Vale to increase the electrical input to the furnace by up to 20% on a stable and sustainable basis by eliminating peak powers that overload and trip out the electrical equipment, and by reducing power unbalances. The SPLC technology maintains smooth arc power using a continuously variable thyristor controlled series reactor. The SPLC compensates variations in the furnace arc with predictive changes in the circuit reactance at a speed of up to 60 times a second. The system started up quickly and has been shown to be easy to operate and maintain by PT Vale. PT Vale’s Operations Team has been testing the new system at set points of up to 90 MW on the newly re-built Furnace No. 2. Over the last 12 months, the throughput of Line 2 has increased by approximately 10% on an annual average; however, debottlenecking in other design areas of the operation is required in order to achieve 90MW operation on a sustainable basis. This outstanding success results from a combination of the furnace and other upgrades, the SPLC active power stabilization, and the skill of PT Vale in quickly adopting new technologies and maximizing the combined benefits of each technology in their operation.

This paper describes a very exacting tunneling project. Planning and technical realization of this service and transportation tunnel was especially difficult as a matter of vibration control, because the tunnel is situated only a few meters under Maria Hospital, which is one of the most busiest hospitals in Helsinki. In this hospital there are many departments for bedpatients, research and treatment with high-tech equipment, operational surgery and a big laboratory. Besides access tunnels are situated near several apartment buildings. The functionality of the tunnel required the placement of the access tunnels to be straight towards these apartment buildings for which special care for blast induced air pressure had to be taken.

Newcrest Mining Limited, originally as Lihir Gold, has operated a pressure oxidation plant for the recovery of gold from refractory ore since 1997. The mine and gold plant are located on Lihir Island in Papua New Guinea. Design of the original pressure oxidation circuit was based on the results of pilot plant tests conducted by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan. Following a decision to expand the plant in 2008, Lihir Gold contracted Sherritt to design a new autoclave. The design exercise utilized the original pilot plant test results, commercial process results at Lihir, and an understanding of advances in autoclave technology since the original plant was built. The new Lihir autoclave will be the largest horizontal, multiple-compartment autoclave in the world. The design process for the pressure oxidation expansion is described in this paper.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. Introduction The subject matter of this paper will be treated under two heads: (1) experimental work and the development of the purification system, and (2) the operation of the commercial plant. During 1927-28, a two-ton slag-retreating plant was in operation at the smelter for experimental purposes. Details of this operation and of the commercial plant are presented in a paper by G. E. Murray, read before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in April, 1933 (1). A point which has considerable bearing on the subject of the present paper, and which was not emphasized by Mr. Murray, is the concentration of volatile impurities in the zinc oxide fume produced. The result of the operation of the slag fuming furnace is largely to confine in a closed circuit all the minor constituents of the Sullivan concentrates, both lead and zinc. They pass into the feed of the zinc fuming furnace, with the result that all impurities which volatilize-such as arsenic, antimony, tin, fluorine, etc.-report in the zinc oxide product. The accompanying condensed flow-sheet (Figure 1) will illustrate this. The only outlet for impurities which is not shown is the small tonnage which passes the Cottrell plants. The flow-sheet would indicate the possibility of building up a prohibitive concentration of cathodic impurities in the oxide leaching plant feed. However, after three years' continuous operation this has not occurred. Should this condition arise at some future date, discard of some tonnage of blast furnace slag is indicated. In Mr. Murray's paper, the much greater flexibility of blast furnace operation, due to the slag fuming furnace, is stressed, particularly as to the lead content of the slag. The requirements of our lead refinery call for a bullion containing about 0.70 percent antimony.

There was no need for the people of Cleveland to ask “Where does the raw sewage go? We want to know!” because it was clear. The raw sewage was being discharged into Lake Erie during heavy rainfall events due to the outdated design of the combined sewer system. In efforts to resolve this ongoing issue for the City of Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District developed Project Clean Lake in collaboration with the US EPA. Project Clean Lake is a 25-year, $3 billion program consisting of seven large-diameter CSO storage tunnels to be constructed beneath the city’s existing infrastructure. The first four tunnels have been completed using traditional hard rock TBM excavation methods. The fifth tunnel, the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project, presents unique challenges and complexities as it will be the first large-diameter EPB TBM to dig under the City of Cleveland. The project itself consists of one tunnel drive 14,100' (2.7 miles) in length, two pipe jacking tunnels, three large slurry wall shafts, two diversion structures, and three regulator reconstructions. Upon completion of the project, 12 permitted CSO locations along Lake Erie will be taken offline, reducing overflow volumes by approximately 350 million gallons per year. This paper will discuss the current status of construction and the chosen means and methods, including the myriad of nuanced differences between hard rock and EPB TBM tunneling methods. Particular attention will be given to the site preparation, setup, and organization; TBM assembly; and TBM launching practices.

This report describes the development and application of PHASEQ/FLOW, a geochemical flow simulator capable of describing the dynamic changes in chemical composition of an aqueous solution during flow in a permeable medium. The solution components can react through intraaqueous reactions, redox, precipitation, or dissolution. The assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium ensures maximum generality with respect to the number of species and components possible; however, the fluid flow itself is limited to one-dimension. The report describes several applications: generic batch equilibria, flowing equilibria, uranium roll-front deposition, and roll-front leaching.

Flooding of open pits now receives considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulphides. A state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit lake model is used to verify that a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy for the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia is to adopt a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit upon cessation of operations. By filling the pit initially with highly saline waters from evaporation/infiltration basins and naturally saline deep groundwater, followed by capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within 1 to 2 years, followed by the rapid onset of sulphate reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulphides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental management strategies. The proposed plan allows for: 1) safe storage of saline evaporation basin waters; 2) the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepages from other mine site operations should they arise; and 3) a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

Due the fast growing of pig iron and steel in the last years associate with some mineral resources changes (Hematite?Itabirite), has been checking the sinter feed degradation. The typical sinter feed (0.15;-6.3 mm) has become limited and the rapid growing production resulted in more and more fine ore (< 150 µm) availability in the market. The sinter plant operators are facing several new challenges since the mixing and granulation- and the sintering behavior of the fines containing mixtures often differs from the traditional sinter feed´s behavior. The utilization of fines in the sinter plants might increase the process water consumption required for the mixing and granulation process or even the solid fuel consumption, which effects the operational cost of the plant significantly. The current study presents an overview about Outotec´s laboratory facilities and competence regarding the mixing and granulation of fines in different equipments. The usage of high intensity mixers (HIM) – vertical and horizontal as well – showed to be the most effective, based in cold agglomeration tests in small scale, in case of fine ore handling. Permeability and particle size distribution curves are used to evaluate and demonstrate the efficiency of the different equipments. Outotec´s ”Know-How” with the different type of mixer and the modern laboratory facilities provide an excellent opportunities to optimize the mixing and granulation procedure and utilize up to 100 % pellet feed

"The pressure oxidation autoclave at the Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) was commissioned in 1991. Since commissioning, the circuit has been well maintained and its capacity increased to mechanical and gaseous oxygen limitations. With advances in available technology, opportunities to produce more sulphide concentrate and a changing business environment, an optimization project has been initiated at RLGM. A multi-phase approach has been developed to optimize both the operations and economics of the circuit. Increased sulphide concentrate production from improved flotation recovery and increasing gold sulphide association at depth has led to the POx circuit becoming a throughput bottleneck. The opportunity exists to process increased tonnages of sulphide concentrates and increase gold production. In order to realize this value, it will be necessary to increase the throughput capacity of the POx circuit.BackgroundThe POx autoclave at the RLGM, commissioned in 1991, was Canada’s first gold autoclave. It was installed to replace the two-stage fluid bed roaster that was built when the Campbell mine and mill were constructed in the late Forties. The circuit was originally designed to process 12.5 t/d sulphide sulphur in about 50 t/d of Campbell flotation concentrate. Following the merger of the Campbell and Red Lake Mines in 2006, the POx circuit started processing flotation concentrate from both Campbell and Red Lake Mills. In recent years, the circuit has been processing about 18 t/d sulphide sulphur in 75-85 t/d flotation concentrate."

The communication system must be rugged , safe and reliable, yet provide an ever increasing amount of high quality services. Presently, these systems are implemented using conventional copper cable. As mining method s and technology advance and the demand for better and more communication services increases, traditional systems quickly reach their limitations. It is under these circumstances that we turn to fibre optic communication systems.Fibre optics is a mature technology which is finding its way into more and more applications worldwide. A fibre optic communication system can provide a level of performance unattainable by conventional cable systems yet ca n be cost competitive. As is well known, fibre optics provides a noise-free, noise-immune, high -capacity communications channel. Glass fibre, being dielectric and non-sparking, is an intrinsically safe communications medium. Clearly, it is ideally suited to the harsh environment present in a mine.From a communication systems point-of-view, the topology of a deep mine is unique. The objective of the systems engineer is to implement a total communications capability throughout this wide spread area. Ideally all classes of services should be accessible throughout the network-an integrated network concept. Recent advances in communications technology combined with fibre optics make this realizable."

This Bureau of Mines report is essentially a handbook, or manual, for making the type of mineral resource valuation commonly required for such public policy problems as mineral leasing. The principle of resource valuation through the capitalization of cash flow is well established. A mathematical procedure, based on a simplified accounting system, is detailed for calculating cash flow from revenue, plant costs, and operating expense. Variations of procedure cover cost depletion, percentage depletion, and depletion limited to 50 percent of net income. The influence of the depletion provisions of the tax regulations on the value of a resource to an owner and to an operator is analyzed. The relationship of royalty, bonus payments, and sales price to resource value is also described, and methods for approximating resource values using these payments as input data are developed.

A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the predicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.
