This paper is one of a series comprising the Mineral Industries Survey of the United States, which was begun in 1935. It describes the simple methods of mining and beneficiating manganese ore, in eastern Tennessee and compares these methods with those used elsewhere in the Appalachian region. The report contains general information on manganese to give a clearer understanding of the methods and costs of mining and. beneficiating manganese ore foam a widespread deposit, an in addition presents zone difficulties normally fond in these operations. The marketing, uses, and value of manganese ore are discussed as well as the amount of capital necessary for effective operation on given scale of production, and requirements are outlines for successful operation of manganese, property in this region.

"In this paper, the desulfuration of pyrite cinder pellets was carried out. Phase analysis shows that most sulfur of pyrite cinder exists in the form of elementary sulfur. Most sulfur was removed in preheating stage. 81.25% sulfur was removed and the average SO2 concentration of exhaust gas was 1365ppm when the pellets were preheated at 950oC for 9 min. The final product, assaying 62.42wt%Fe and 0.02wt%S content at 96.88% desulfuration was achieved under the conditions of preheating at 950? for 9 min and roasting at 1200? for 15 min, which can be used as the burden for blast furnace.IntroductionPyrite cinder, as a subsidiary product of sulfuric acid production by roasting of pyrite ores, was solid waste in sulfuric acid enterprises. According to the statistics, the annual production of pyrite cinder is about 15 million tons in China. Besides, there is lots of pyrite cinder deposited for many years [1-3]. The pyrite cinder consumed in the cement and other industries as auxiliary additives only accounts for less 30% of its total discharge and the left is stored in waste pond, occupying much land and polluting environment in China [4-5]. Moreover, pyrite cinder contains iron between 30-63% which can be utilized as a cheap raw material for ironmaking by sintering or pelletizing processes, which can not only prevent pollution but also provide cheap raw materials for ironmaking [6-7]. However, compared to traditional iron ore concentrate, pyrite cinder possesses higher sulfur content."

Presented in this report are the experimental results of coarse coal slurry degradation data obtained from the Hydraulic Transport Research Facility (HTRF) at the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC), Bruceton, PA. This particle degradation report is a summary of the particle distribution data obtained at the HTRF for the period 26 November 1982 to 1 October 1983. The testing covered herein is for coarse Pittsburgh Seam coal in the 6-in (150 mm) and 12-in (300 mm) pipelines, at velocities ranging from 5 to 18 ft/s (1.5 to 5.5 m/s), and at concentrations by weight ranging from 15 to 55 pet. Particle size distribution samples were taken systematically throughout the testing.

"The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism.This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.INTRODUCTIONThe great majority of newly installed cells in mineral processing plants world-wide are of the cylindrical tank design and this tank shape offers a number of hydraulic advantages over the older style of square cells. Cylindrical cells give symmetrical flow patterns and by careful design of the mechanism and tank internals, the flow patterns generated can concentrate the more intense mixing in the lower portion of the cell to promote good solids suspension and particlebubble contact. Simultaneously, cylindrical tank design gives a more quiescent upper zone for particle-bubble transport into the froth zone. These symmetrical flow patterns are naturally disturbed in normal operation by the slurry inflow and outflow from the individual cells. The challenge for flotation cell designers is to determine the magnitude of these flow disturbances, and to assess whether or when the inflow and outflow rates have a sufficient impact on the hydraulic flow patterns so as to potentially affect the metallurgical performance of the flotation cell."

Blast violence has always been a criteria that has been analyzed without a quantitative approach relying on opinions of those viewing the blast and oftentimes does not transfer between open-pit mines, quarries, and construction projects. Added to this confusion is that on many regulate projects, such as U.S. Army Corp of Engineers construction projects, the definition of "flyrock" or violence can vary, and contractors must be able to meet this requirement. This project analyzed hundreds of blasts from various construction projects to develop a new metric to determine blast violence - the Violence Factor. If a blast is fired using 1.25" (32 mm) diameter product and a 10-foot (3 m) bench, vertical uplift of 60 feet (18.3 m) would be considered extreme and violent by any professional in the industry. However, a 100-foot-high (30.5 m) bench using 12" (305 mm) bulk product, having a vertical displacement of 60 feet(18.3 m)might be considered typical or non-worrisome. This is where violence factor is beneficial as itprovides a system of scaling the violence of a blast based on the bench height to give manager a keyperformance indicator (KPI) which is easy to monitor and can provide a large amount of information onsite-specific design variables for their performance on blasting and the end-results of the blast. The Violence Factor of a blast is an integer which is scaled to determine how high vertical uplift of a blast is compared to the bench height. This project analyzed numerous blasts to determine what blast design variables contribute to violence. This violence has also been shown to occur when a non-optimal breakage mechanism, cratering, occurs and the design criteria that lead to this cratering. Finally, this paper will present typical results of various levels of violence including backbreak, fragmentation, and muckpile configuration.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic metres per hour) for dozers operating in hard rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modelled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. A commercially available road base material was found to be highly representative of site conditions. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard rock dozer push operations. Currently, it is difficult to estimate dozer push productivity in hard rock environments due to dozer productivity correction factors that are empirical in nature and provide only discrete, end-point values for a range of operating conditions. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 m to 40 m. As such, it is recommended that efficient bulk dozing operations in hard rock mining blocks should not exceed 40 m dozing distance. Further testing of muckpile conditions with increased clay and moisture content would be beneficial in order to better understand and quantify the effects of cohesion on hard rock dozer push productivity.

The thermomechanical response of thermally-activated (TA) piles under monotonic thermal loads is quite well understood and the remaining uncertainties relate to the effect of long-term, cyclic loading of individual TA piles and pile groups. Recent studies undertaken by the authors have provided insights into the behaviour of TA pile foundations undergoing cyclic thermal loading. Despite their simplicity, the analyses show that key aspects of the observed response of piles in sand, under cyclic thermal loading can be reproduced, providing confidence in the outcomes of the analyses. The studies examined isolated piles and pile groups, and concluded that irrecoverable thermally-induced settlement may be mitigated through the choice of an appropriate margin of safety on the pile shaft resistance under service mechanical load conditions, and the maximum thermal stress can also be readily estimated. This paper consolidates these works and provides guidance regarding the safe geotechnical and structural design of the piles, then looks towards the remaining issues around the safe provision of thermally-activated pile foundations.

"Traditionally, the implementation of an automated advanced process controller in any mineral processing complex is a challenge, mainly due to the quality of resources and technologies required, the uniqueness of each control solution and the uncertainty of the engineering hours needed to complete the task. Thus, the use of advanced and proven control technology becomes a key factor when deploying the control strategy. However, success would still not be possible without the presence of common sense, process knowledge and fundamental process data. Minera Los Pelambres, taking advantage of such factors and its accumulated process experience, implemented a novel and successful combination of MPC (Multivariable Predictive Control) and advanced control for secondary grinding and regrinding stages at its copper concentrator plant. In both cases, the control objectives are: being capable of processing a variable feed from the upstream process while at the same time avoiding to become a process bottle neck and yet, maintaining an adequate product quality (in terms of size distribution) to the process downstream. Additionally, for the case of the vertical regrinding mill (vertimill), the control system should also be capable of keeping an adequate circulation load and making an efficient use of the available grinding power. In either case, extending hidrocyclones availability while maintaining their performance is a must, since both factors are required for process and maintenance purposes. Thus, the process control problem becomes one with a multi-variable type of process with multiple control objectives to satisfy simultaneously. In trying to solve it, many mineral processing operations have implemented basic or conventional control or even better yet, expert systems. Minera Los Pelambres believes that better and faster results can be achieved using a combination of MPC and advanced control. Such strategy was successfully implemented, reducing considerably process variability while maintaining high throughput and keeping the process well within constraints limits. Their control philosophy, implementation process, main results and their key performance indicators are discussed here."

This paper describes the in-situ performance of two IFS powered support installations at Betws and Penallta Collieries in the South Wales Coalfield, United Kingdom. Intensive monitoring of all powered support functions, strata movement, support/strata interaction and coal seam disturbance permitted an extensive evaluation of powered support performance for all periods of the mining cycle. The influence of support design, support rating, face design, proximate strata and scam section upon support and operating performance are discussed. In-situ performance is compared to design specification and to the requirements of Production Instruction 1982/6. Aspects which show significant variation are highlighted. Particular attention is drawn to the precise analysis of support/strata interaction in the form of canopy and base loading profiles. This illustrates the influence of support rating and configuration in determining the interaction of the canopy and base with the proximate strata. Extensometric monitoring of the coalface highlights the potential zones of disturbance within the seam which allied with support position monitoring provides an accurate basis for theoretical considerations of support loading. Conclusions are drawn, the application of which may enhance the performance and operation of IFS supports in thin to medium sections.

Companies which have been engaged in safety work for a number of years are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that it is not enough to supply guards for various pieces of machinery and equipment and to supply safety inspection to see that rules are being carried out. Studies of many safety organizations have demonstrated that the accidents which could have been prevented by proper guards constitute only a small percentage of the total acci- dents, and amount to perhaps not more than 15 per cent. Evidently, if success is to be attained in preventing all accidents which it is humanly possible to prevent, a company must have the cooperation of every employee. Mining particularly presents probably the greatest hazards of any industry. Prevention of accidents. is made increasingly difficult because men often work alone, although generally in pairs, and only in the concentrated systems of mining do they usually work in groups of more than three or four. Supervision is difficult, therefore, and much reliance must be placed upon the individual workmen. In mining, as perhaps in no other occupation, it is of the greatest importance that individual workmen should receive continuous safety education. Within the last few years safety education has come to the front as one of the most important of accident-prevention measures, although it is true that its importance has been repeatedly stressed by the United States Bureau of Mines and other national safety organizations since the inception of the safety movement many years ago. A review of the safety educational methods of some companies in the Lake Superior district should be of interest. Perhaps better methods are in use in other parts of the country, but the methods shown have been instrumental in many cases in reducing the number of accidents. In one mine in the district whose methods are described the frequency of accidents has been reduced to zero within the last two years. A number of other mines in the district have recently gone into the class having no lost-time accidents for considerable periods of time. One company in the Lake Superior region, operating over 30 mines, succeeded during one month of 1930 in operating every mine without having a single accident which caused lost time beyond the day of the injury. Records like these are increasing in number, and while it is believed that they are the combined result of different means of safety activity, it is undoubtedly true that many of these results were obtained through safety educational methods.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. When the Federal investigation of coal - dust explosions in mines was begun in 1908 , following a series of mine explosion disasters in 1907 , mining men generally questioned whether coal dust in air is explosive unless " gas " or methane is present , though perhaps in small amounts not detectable by a safety lamp . The experimental tests beginning in 1909 at the Pittsburgh testing gallery, and after 1911 , at the Experimental mine , demonstrated to the mining public the explosibility of coal dust in itself . There followed much controversy , both among practical mining men and scientists , as to whether the coal-dust particles uni te directly with the oxygen of the air, or whether gas is instantaneously distilled from the dust prior to explosive combustion , the gas enveloping each particle and propagating the flame from one to another . In considering methods of preventing explosions , this question made no difference for practical purposes , but it did have bearing in determining the relative inflammability of dusts of different coals . This led to the experiments by Guy B. Taylor and Horace C. Porter , on the momentary heating of the inflammable coal dusts , reported in this paper . Meanwhile , experiments on the inflammability of coal dust conducted in the Experimental mine , under my direction , and in the laboratory by J. C. W. Frazer and later by J. K. Clement and J. N. Lawrence , showed that different kinds of coal dust differ markedly in inflammability , thus confirming experiments made by Messrs . Taffanel and Durr at the Lievin Testing Station , France , and by various investigators in Great Britain . Both the French and British investigators concluded that their experiments demonstrated the distillation of volatile matter preceding inflammation .

Over the last forty years, a number of specific fluidized bed applications in nickel extraction have been developed for commercial use. Five important processes have gained particular acceptance, namely, sulphide ore roasting, nickel sulphide (matte) roasting, nickel oxide reduction, laterite ore pre-reduction, and nickel chloride pyrohydrolysis. These applications involve different feed materials and process conditions, however, all benefit from fast reaction kinetics and high heat and mass transfer rates in the fluidized bed reactors. They have been studied, tested, and implemented by various nickel producers, who have published their results in many papers and patents. This paper examines the design issues surrounding the application of fluidized bed technology to the above nickel processes. Based on the available data in the open literature, computerized process modelling is used to provide generic flowsheets that illustrate the key features of each process.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. The impact of fatigue is seen not only in its effect on the job performance of haul truck operators but also on the health of the operator and the productivity at the mine site. Its impact can even extend outside of the mine site to the health and well-being of the surrounding community (Fourie et al., 2010). In this paper, a case study of a small, surface mining organization is presented. The goal is to highlight the fatigue risk management system implemented at the studied mine site. Mine safety personnel who were interviewed discuss the changes made to the infrastructure of the mine, to administrative areas such as the number of shifts and the use of vacation time, as well as the implementation of new technology into haulage vehicles. This paper reviews how these changes are supported in the research literature.

Introduction Noranda, like similar businesses, is suffering the pain of previously unheard of currency relationships, a cost structure built in better days, and conditions of gross oversupply possible in almost any commodity. Indeed, it does seem like the worst of all possible worlds is out there before us. To understand a Canadian natural resource company, you must know how the country is organized. So far as natural resources are concerned, Canada is not Canada. Canada is 10 provinces and each own the resources situated therein. Thus, the conditions of extraction, exploitation, and operation are all set by the province, while the conditions of trade and currency are set by the Federal government. This means that what may be the rule in Newfoundland may not be the rule in Manitoba or British Columbia. The second thing is that the Canadian currency has been a satellite of the US dollar for a long time. This means that we hold the unenviable and unjustified position of being the country with the second strongest currency in the world. What this has meant to us is what it has meant to an American operator. Since 1980, a pound of copper fetches 214% more for a Chilean than it does for us and a pound of zinc 115% more for a Belgian. From an American point of view, Canada is favored because its dollar is valued at 25% to 30% less than the U.S. However, because of industrial indiscretions in years past, Canada has a locked in labor cost disadvantage that is very hard to cope with. Canada has a unique situation with its labor unions. Many of the unions are, or have been, internationals and therefore gained undue strength in early days. Canada has a third political party of socialist persuasion. It is entirely funded by dues from laor union members. Thus, we have a politicized workforce. And finally, we have a public service that has the right to strike. This had made the public service unions by far the strongest now in Canada. What this means to the mining industry is that there is somebody out there blazing the trail. The unrelenting power of these public service unions probably creates a climate more conducive to excessive wage settlements in industry than would otherwise be the case. Study, Work, and Pray So what do we do when times get tough? In simple terms, we study a lot, we work harder, and we pray a great deal. We study a lot in terms of learning hitherto unknown strengths and weaknesses of our products, processes, and operations. We work hard in the sense that we do everything possible to improve our productivity. And we pray a lot because, so far, anything else we have done has not been enough. Some years ago, Noranda recognized that its principal base and precious metal operations were diminishing. To provide for the future, we should branch out into other resource type operations. These might be countercyclical and also perhaps a little more permanent. For this reason, Noranda entered the potash, aluminum, and forest products businesses. Biodegradable hydraulic fluids can save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and clean up costs in the event of a hydraulic fluid leak or spill. When properly selected, applied, maintained and monitored, a biodegradable fluid will have a long useful life and will protect equipment as well as or better than conventional petroleum based hydraulic fluids.
