PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor's greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

"La connaissance des contraintes naturelles qui prévalent dans les massifs rocheux est un prérequis indispensable pour la conception sécuritaire et économique des excavations comme on en retrouve dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Certains chercheurs se sont attardés à colliger les résultats de mesures de ces contraintes et les ont utilisés pour produire des modèles de prédiction basés sur leur traitement statistique. Ces modèles de prédiction sont très populaires auprès des exploitants miniers puisqu’ils permettent, du moins dans les étapes préliminaires de design, d’obtenir de façon s’apéconomique mais approximative, une partie des paramètres dont ils ont besoin. Dans le cadre d’un projet initié en 1994 avec la collaboration de l’IRSST, il a été décidé de produire un modèle de prédiction englobant une partie de la zone périphérique de la faille de Cadillac, soit une zone plus restreinte que le Bouclier Canadien utilisé jusqu’ici comme région pour l’élaboration de tels modèles. Pour produire ce modèle de nouvelles données obtenues avec une technique permettant d’exercer un excellent contrôle de qualité ont été ajoutées à celles déjà disponibles. Une telle régionalisation des données de base permet d’obtenir un modèle où les intensités et les orientations des contraintes principales sont beaucoup moins dispersées que ce que rapportent les modèles publiés jusqu’à ce jour. Enfin, il est démontré que le modèle proposé pour la région étudiée est en toute probabilité plus sécuritaire que les modèles plus généraux publiés à ce jour. Knowledge of the in situ state of stress existing in a rock mass is essential to the safe and economical design of underground mining excavations. Prediction models have been published, based on the statistical treatment of stress measurement results. Such prediction models are very popular among mine operators because they allow them, at least at a preliminary design stage, to economically obtain part of the information needed, even if this information is approximative. In 1994, a research project financed by IRSST was initiated aiming to produce a prediction model that would comprise a peripheral zone around the Cadillac fault. This region is more confined than the Canadian Shield on which the existing prediction models have been based up to now. In order to produce such a model, existing stress measurement results have been used in conjunction with new stress measurements that have been performed based on a technique which allows full control of the quality of the measurements. Restricting the data upon which the model is based to a more specific region gives a model in which the intensities and the orientations of principal stresses are far less scattered than the results published to date. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is probably safer for the studied region than the models previously published."

Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the AIME. I was doubly pleased when Toby Yu asked me to present to you my thoughts on the past, the present, and the future of bulk transportation by barge. My first pleasure comes from sharing with you the subject that has been my career for many years. I love this industry in the same way Mark Twain loved our rivers. Somehow, I can find in all of the activities that make up this crazy barge business the same sort of excitement that he found in "steam boating." The second reason for my enthusiasm is that Toby carefully pointed out that the presentation had to be kept to a maximum of 15 minutes. I can promise you that I will hold to his maximum time limit.

Since early in 1940 the Bureau of Mines has been concerned with possible means of utilizing manganese-bearing materials from the Missouri Valley manganese deposit. During the period between July 1945 and August 1947, the Bureau of Mines undertook to complete certain phases of the problem by re-evaluating the results of earlier work and supplementing the findings by additional operations and field studies considered necessary to permit drawing of final conclusions. Distinctive discoloration marks the outcrop of the manganese deposit which is exposed on both flanks of the Missouri River Valley and its major tributaries for a peripheral distance of approximately 523 miles in south-central South Dakota. The apparent magnitude of the deposit, judged largely from observation of the outcrop, had led to much speculation as to its actual value in terms of tonnage and grade. Similarly, investigative work aimed at developing a means of winning a usable manganese-rich product from the deposit had reached no conclusion, except that certain methods showed more promise than others for accomplishing the final objective.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated recovery of concentrates containing tin, tantalum, and niobium from the Kougarok deposit on the Seward Peninsula, AK. To date, 25 million lb of tin has been delineated in occurrences containing 0.36 to 1.32 pct Sn, and the resource potential is estimated to be as high as 25 million short tons at average grades of 0.75 pct Sn, 0.025 pct Ta, and 0,025 pct Nb. Deslimed ore was concentrated to 54 pct Sn, 0.3 pct Ta, and 0.3 pct Nb, with recoveries of 74 pct Sn and 44 pct Ta/Nb using a Humphrey's* spiral followed by a Deister shaking table. Tin values in the slimes were upgraded to a 5-pct-Sn concentrate using a Bartles-Mozley separator followed by flotation. The 5- pct-Sn was further upgraded by fuming to give a concentrate containing approximately 60 pct Sn. The recovery of the two products combined was 80 pct Sn and 46 pct Ta/Nb, A flowsheet with mill-design parameters resulted from the metallurgical testing. An economic analysis was made based on the proposed process.

"The great interest taken in uranium in Canada during the past few years has resulted in the discovery of a very large number of occurrences, and in much research that has added to the knowledge of the mineralogy and geology of uranium deposits. The object of this paper is to present that information in condensed form. Some of it has been published before, but the writer has been asked to bring it together and to add more recent, unpublished data. The paper therefore contains short accounts of the mineralogy of uranium and of the types and distribution of occurrences; brief regional descriptions, including information on some of the characteristic deposits; and conclusions regarding prospecting and development possibilities.The writer has access to much confidential information supplied in compliance with regulations of the Atomic Energy Control Board. He has used this only for making broad generalizations that could not affect individual interests, and only where the owners of properties have agreed to its use.Much of the information on mineralogy and geology is derived from the work of others. The writer is particularly indebted to M. H. Haycock and S. Kaiman of the Mines Branch; H. V. Ellsworth, S. C. Robinson, E. J. Brooker, H. R. Steacy, W. E. Hale, and A. M. The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

THE Pembina oil field is in west-central Alberta, about 88 miles west-southwest of Edmonton. The field, about 35 miles long by T HE Pembina oil field is in west-central Alberta, about 88 miles west-southwest of Edmonton. The field, about 35 miles long by 85 miles wide, is the largest in Canada in areal extent, in the amount of oil in place and in the current producing rate. The discovery well was completed in the middle of 1953. The field has grown until its present area is 369,820 acres. There are 74 working interest owners in the field. Early in the producing history of the Pembina field a committee of operators was formed on a permanent basis. The Pembina Operators' Committee has established a permanent staff, which compiles and distributes pertinent field information on a regular basis to all participants. The Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board has dealt with field-wide problems primarily through this committee. Expansion of the field was rapid as shown by the number of wells completed -from 135

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. "Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. The transition of mechanical cooling refrigerants from their inception in the 1800s through to the current day has been driven by several factors. Original refrigerants such as sulfur and carbon dioxide, chloromethane and ammonia, whilst effective came with toxicity and/or flammability issues. In 1930 DuPont trademarked a new synthetic refrigerant known as Freon® 12, this development was the introduction of ‘chlorofluorocarbons’ (CFCs).Throughout the 1930s and 1940s additional synthetic refrigerants were developed, namely Freon® 11 and Freon® 22. Due to their non-toxic and non-flammable characteristics, synthetic refrigerants were extensively used for domestic, commercial and industrial applications for the next 60 years.In 1985, one of the first scientific papers suggested a potential mechanism linking CFCs and areduction in the density of the ozone layer. In 1987 the Montreal protocol is ratified; it is the first UN treaty to be ratified by every country on earth. Due to CFC’s ozone depletion potential (ODP), the treaty required the consumption of CFC’s to be reduced by 50 per cent over the next ten years. By 1996 the phase out of CFC’s (Freon® 12) is completed, the phase out of HCFC (Freon® 22) refrigerants comes into effect.On 1 January 2018 the phase down of HFC’s begins. Whilst having zero impact on the ozone layer HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP). As we transition through the HFC phase down (2018–2035) we are beginning to see the emergence of what some consider to be the fourth synthetic wave, hydrofluoro-olefins (HFO’s). HFO’s and their blends have zero ODP and low GWP’s, ranging from 150 to less than 1. The reduction in GWP with HFO’s typically comes at the expense of flammability, which is not ideal. Each refrigerant has its optimal application, therefor when considering refrigerant choices for mining systems, a complete assessment of the environmental, health and safety, efficiency and commercial impacts should be considered now more than ever.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

"In 1958, the Ontario Department of Mines appointed a committee to study the accident situation and mining methods used in the uranium mines in the E1liot Lake district. This committee reviewed the existing knowledge on mine design, pillar support and roof spans and came to the conclusion that scientific knowledge had not yet reached the stage of producing rational design procedures which would reduce the dependence on trial-and-error methods. Since that time, the Mining Research Centre has made numerous stress measurements in two mines to define the pre-mining and pillar stresses. A comprehensive series of tests has been done in the laboratory to measure the compressive strength of the rock; a geological survey of the region has been made to evaluate tectonic stresses; and a survey was done on mining conditions with regard to stable and unstable pillar configurations. This information has been used to evaluate pillar design as effected by pillar width and height, depth below surface, extraction and pre-mining stress fields. The resultant design of pillar widths and corresponding extraction as the depth increased is in line with past and present experience in these mines. The information available on roof stability is still insufficient to design stable stope spans with the same degree of confidence; experience and trial-and-error methods are still required."

This study conducts a comparative analysis of construction efficiency. In the first part we compared electronic and non-electric initiation systems, focusing on tunnel contour holes. Field blasting operations were executed across a variety of delays to identify the optimal delay time. This delay for the in-situ rock mass was determined through regression analysis of blasting vibration in contour holes and for overbreak/underbreak. The blasting results with the electronic initiation system using the obtained optimal delay, applied to contour holes, were compared with the results of the non-electric initiation system. The overbreak and underbreak decreased by an average of 2.7 cm and 5.8 cm respectively, by using the electronic initiation system. Moreover, the vibration reduction rate in contour holes region was reduced by 11.9% based on the blasting vibration estimation equation proposed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT). Underground construction projects have become increasing popular as cities grow in both size and density. This growth severely limits the amount of useable space for new project on the surface, resulting in the decision to build them underground. This new policy however brings into focus the challenge of managing and reducing blasting related vibration due to the proximity of these projects to sensitive structures, utilities and foundations often present in urban environments. For this purpose, we have been required to manage the vibration by reducing the quantity of explosives used per round. Inspired by surface blasting techniques, we applied a decking mode to address and work around this challenge. We present in this paper the first attempt to blast a tunnel face using a decking method and reduce the charging per hole from 6 kg to 3 kg per hole and keep the same advance rate for this tunnel. The results are presented in the third part of this paper. In the second part we present the results of the decking mode in shaft. The use of the electronic initiation system in tunnel construction provides the users an effective tool to improve the overbreak/underbreak and keep the vibration at a low level with a large gain on the overall project schedule and budget. This what we want to demonstrate in this paper.

This bulletin contains a statement of certain results that will be embodied in a report describing investigations of the combustion of fuel made by the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in a specially constructed long furnace. The furnace forms part of the fuel-testing plant at Pittsburg, Pa., which was established and equipped by t.he Geological Survey, but passed under the control of the Bureau of Mines on July 1, 1910, when a t.ransfer of fuel-test.ing investjgations, authorized by act of Congress, became effective. The work discussed in this bulletin was done under the direction of the Geological Survey. The furnace was designed and built for an experimental study of the processes of combustiop, this study being part of a comprehensive plan for testing fuels to determine their heat value and the manner in which they can be used to best advantage. Although the main object of the researches made with the furnace by the Geological Survey was to examine critically the production of sensible heat by combustion along the path of the gases rising from the fuel, an interesting as well as important side problem developed in the study of the simultaneous dissipation of the heat through the walls and roof . of the furnace. Thus incidental data were collected on the temperature gradient through the walls at several places. These temperature data. (together with the heat conductivity of the material of the walls) formed the basis for calculating the heat dissipated through the walls. The object of this report is to present and discuss these temperature data. The discussion particularly concerns the air-space type of wall construction as compared with the solid brick wall or walls type, in which the air space is filled with some solid material of low heat conductivity. The conclusion of the authors, which perhaps will surprise some readers, is that, so far as loss of heat is concerned, a solid wall of brick or any ordinary material is preferable to a hollow wall of the same total thickness, especially if the air space in the hollow wall is near the furnace side. There is a general belief that l?ince air is a poor conductor of heat, air spaces built into the walls of a furnace will prevent or reduce heat dissipation through the wa.lls. Although there may be instances of furnace walls in which such construction reduces the rate of heat flow through them, yet as a rule the effect of the air space is just the opposite. While the heat does travel very slowly through the air by conduction, it leaps over the air space readily by radiation. Although this latter mode of heat propagation is common in nature, the laws governing it are not generall;y known and are seldom taken into consideration when furnace walls are being designed. It may be stated here that the quantity of heat passing through a. portion of a solid wall by conduction depends on the difference between the temperatures of the two planes limiting the portion of the wall. The quantity of heat that passes across the air space in the waH depends on the difference of the fourth powers of the absolute temperatUI: es of the surfaces inclosing Hie air space. It follows that, in case the heat. passes by conduction through the solid'portion of the wall, the loss remains approximately the same so long as the temperature of the two limiting planes remains constant, no matter what may be the temperature of the two planes. On the other hand, the heat passing across the air space by radiation increases rapidly with the temperatures of the inclosing surfaces, although the difference between these temperatures may remain constant. This feature will be shown by curves in the latter part of this paper and thoroughly discussed. The important point is that the air space, which is advantageous in the walls of a refrigerator because the temperatures are low, is objectionable in a furnace wall because the temperatures are high. It is customary to put air spaces in furnace walls between the firebrick linings and the common brick. Usually the fire-brick lining is only half a brick thick, which construction brings the air space too close to the furnace. The result is that the temperatures of the surfaces inclosing the air spaces are too high, and in consequence too much heat is radiated across the spaces. The heat passing through such walls would be much reduced if the air spaces were filled with brick, or, better, with some cheap nonconducting materials, such as ash, sand, mineral wool, etc. Even where the fire-brick lining is one brick thick (9 inches), the temperature in the furnace may be high enough to raise the temperatures of the air-space surfaces so much that the heat radiated across the space will amount to more than would the heat conducted through a filling, were the filling only common brick. This last statement is amply justified by the data here presented.

Thank you for your introduction, and thank you to the CIM for inviting me to make a presentation to you today. This is my first opportunity to report to you on the status of the Canadian uranium industry and I am pleased to tell you that the industry is in good shape, and well positioned for the future. As you will no doubt be aware, Saskatchewan benefits from the world?s largest known highgrade deposits of uranium as well as from a high level of provincial, public and northern community support. It is within this unique combination of geology and community that our industry operates. Uranium markets have been extremely competitive for a number of years for several reasons. First, deregulation in the nuclear electric power industry has tended to encourage fuel buyers to use up their large inventories built up at a time when rapidly increasing demand was anticipated. Second, alternate sources from surplus commercial stocks, military materials and reprocessed fuel have presented a major additional source of uranium supply. Today, these secondary supplies are meeting about half of uranium reactor feed requirements. Canada (that is, Saskatchewan) is the world?s largest ?natural? uranium producer with about a third of the global production. Saskatchewan?s mines produced more than 30 million pounds of yellowcake in 2002. Despite low prices, steady demand for uranium will continue. In fact, an increase in world uranium production in 2002 helped feed a more than 3 per cent increase in reactor fuel demand. Low cost production is important for surviving low market prices, but investments are based on longer-term strategies rather than simply responding to market cycles. Cost is not the only issue. In these times of increasing regulatory and public scrutiny we must continue to earn the trust of our stakeholders by adopting the highest standards and staying on the leading edge of technical, social and environmental developments. Managing these issues is as important as traditional concerns of ore grade and cost of production. The last two decades of the 20th century saw the Province of Saskatchewan rise to prominence as the leader in uranium production from facilities, which were at the time deemed world class. These facilities are now either at - or nearing - the end of their production years. We are now bringing on new facilities that will position Saskatchewan to remain the world leader in uranium production for many years to come.

"Mineral exploration in Canada traditionally has gone from boom to bust in cyclical pat-terns following market and discovery cycles, but other endemic factors related to exploration financing and performance have contributed to the amplitude and recurrence of these fluctuations. In view of these problems, junior exploration is reviewed here in a marketing perspective, looking at the 4 Ps: Product, Price, Placement and Promotion.In the 1980s, MEDA incentives gave the shares of junior and mining companies significant price and promotion advantages, and contributed to excessive exploration funding. Many were thus led to minimize the basic values needed for continued investor interest: appropriate levels of product quality, sustained share value and customer satisfaction. Basic changes are needed to improve the marketing of junior mineral exploration in the future, with or without improved fiscal incentives. To be successful, the required improvements must come from the technical participants, but the financial partners also need to be involved.Exploration in Canada must be marketed with vigour, both in Canada and internationally. Exploration, mine development and mine production are essential to our economy. They are environmentally acceptable and they are welcome in Quebec and in most Canadian provinces and territories. Canadian exploration and mining are entrepreneurial industries that must take better advantage of their strengths and achievements and remove the shortcomings that hinder them: nobody can do it for them!"

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.
