PRIMITIVE man supplied his wants as they arose; as he became more civilized he anticipated them by producing more regularly and storing the products for future use. This tended to cheapen' production and prevent ' violent fluctuations and therefore tended to increase consumption. In order to anticipate our wants, we must know what these wants will be, and this can be .determined only by statistics. 'While we have made great progress in gathering statistics, they are still far from what they should be; especially metal statistics. We determine fairly, well the amount produced, but this does not answer all inquiries because of the erratic conditions of mining, it is necessary to carry larger stocks of metals than of most other articles; moreover, as metals are more or less durable, it is difficult to determine the actual consumption. We often count under consumption what is being produced and sold, while the actual consumption is what is being worn out.

Santa Fe Pacific Gold, headquartered in Albuquerque, NM is expanding its operation at the Twin Creeks Mine in Nevada. The $250-million sulfide expansion project, including the Sage Mill, is under construction and is 80% complete. Also, additional mining equipment has been purchased to haul the sulfide ore to the mill. With the expansion, employment at Twin Creeks is expected to reach approximately 970 people by the end of 1996. Santa Fe Pacific Gold now owns and operates three gold mines in the United States and is involved in several other gold projects. The three currently operating mines are the Twin Creeks, Mesquite and Lone Tree mines. The Mesquite Mine is located in California’s Imperial Valley. Lone Tree is located 55 km (34 miles) southeast of Winnemucca, NV. The company’s total gold production from these operations is expected to be in the range of 26.3 to 26.6 t (845,000 to 855,000 oz) in 1996. This compares to a total production of about 124 kg (4,000 oz) for the company in 1989. Production costs range from $6.90to $7.25/g ($215 to $225/oz). At the end of 1995, the company reported proven and probable reserves of 556.7 t(17.9 million oz) of gold.

"High-strength cable bolts have been used for ground support in underground coal mines for many years. Cable bolts are routinely used as secondary ground support in numerous longwall gateroad support applications, areas that possibly experience the most severe conditions in current underground coal mining. Additionally, when mining ground conditions deteriorate, engineers oftentimes recommend cable supports as a principal solution because of the established credibility for successful ground control. Nevertheless, there is still a reluctance to utilize non-tensioned cable supports as an effective primary roof support alternative.This paper provides historical and recently documented examples of non-tensioned cable supports utilized as an effective primary ground support method in a western U.S. underground coal mine, and it will continue the technical discussion between the differences of various degrees of tension in cable supports with respect to ground behavior and reactions.INTRODUCTIONResin-grouted cable supports are widely used to support difficult ground conditions throughout the world. Through the use of innovative applications and configurations they have proven to be a major paradigm shift in roof support and ground control technology in the U.S. (Tadolini and Koch, 1993; McDonnell et al., 1995; Tadolini and Gallagher, 1994; Tadolini and Trackemas, 1994)Today, the basic cable bolt support consists of a high-strength steel cable installed in bore holes that range in diameter from 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 in) depending on the strand size and drilling equipment. Cables are offered in both bright and galvanized, for corrosion protection, and range in capacity from about 30 to 60 tons. An example of a resin-grouted cable bolt and the key components is shown in Figure 1. The steel cables are flexible and the support length is not limited by the height of the opening. Lengths of up to 10 m (32 ft) have been supported with high pattern densities when standing supports were not operationally feasible. The most common lengths are 3 to 5 m (10 to 16 ft). An important physical characteristic is that PC-strand has an ASTM minimum elongation requirement of 4%. For comparison purposes, the ASTM 432-08 Standard Specifications for Roof and Rock Bolts and Accessories specifies elongation requirements for traditional roof bolts are a minimum of 12% for grade 40, 9% for grade 60, and 8% for grade 75 materials, respectively. Traditional roof bolts can stretch and elongate twice the length that cable bolts can, which makes design considerations challenging."

This paper introduces recent advances in stress-wave NDT systems for use in assessments of in-service foundation integrity and drilled shaft construction. The primary results of the laboratory experiments are very promising, as the acquired image was capable of differentiating changes in pile cross section as low as 0.3 cm. The preliminary results with the same hardware components on a relatively large scale cemented sand model were also promising. A brief overview is provided of both systems including hardware, survey methods, and data processing techniques, followed by a discussion on application of the results to QA/QC of deep foundations. INTRODUCTION There are two main applications in which current QA/QC NDT technology fails to provide sufficient information regarding deep foundation conditions: (1) detection of flaws in outside cover concrete of drilled shafts and corrosion in steel piling; and (2) evaluation of anomalies beneath the bottom of drilled shaft excavations. Previous studies have demonstrated the capabilities of high frequency stress waves for geotechnical and foundation evaluation purposes (Lee and Santamarina 2005; Coe and Brandenberg 2010; Coe and Brandenberg 2012; Coe and Kermani 2016). Higher frequency waves can visualize smaller anomalous features at the expense of higher attenuation and smaller propagation distance. Therefore, the goal of this study was to advance the state of NDT practice by development of a prototype high resolution stress-wave imaging system as proof-of-concept. The equipment and hardware were modular, which allowed simultaneous development of two system configurations for application to in- service foundations as well as drilled shaft excavations during construction. Results are presented based on two large scale soil models. The first laboratory model simulated section loss in an in-service steel pipe pile and drilled shaft foundation (Fig. 1a). The second model simulated anomalous conditions beneath drilled shafts excavations as might be encountered in areas with significant karst (Fig. 1b). For both models, evaluation of foundation conditions relied on the propagation of small amplitude seismic stress waves using hardware similar to those described in Coe and Brandenberg (2010) and Coe and Brandenberg (2012).

Correias transportadoras de alta temperatura são ativos críticos para a pelotização devido ao prejuízo que sua falha pode trazer para a produção. Nesse sentido, deve-se avaliar a vida útil da correia em uso, visando, principalmente, auxiliar sua manutenção, e nesse contexto o presente trabalho tem como proposta utilizar a caracterização dos componentes e o estudo da degradação térmica do material da cobertura de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura. As caracterizações foram realizadas de modo comparativo entre três tipos distintos de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura fornecidas para a VALE S.A. Os reforços das correias foram caracterizados por FT-IR para análise qualitativa do polímero. De maneira semelhante, as borrachas foram caracterizadas por meio da análise do produto de pirólise via FT-IR e a densidade de ligações cruzadas por meio da técnica de inchamento do polímero e aplicação da equação de Flory-Rhener, o que ajudou a justificar o comportamento das diferentes marcas de correia perante a degradação térmica, estudada em um trabalho anterior. A partir desses resultados e utilizando dados de variação das propriedades mecânicas do material em função do tempo e temperatura de processo, pôde-se avaliar a taxa de dano causado a cada correia e, aplicando-se dados reais de processo, avaliou-se o desempenho das correias em trabalho.

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

ON superficial consideration a technical library might be considered a luxury to the business institution that possesses one. After all, public libraries and research institutions probably contain all the data that would be found in a private technical library, and able consultants are available both within and without a company. In all probability the technical men of a company have in their combined personal libraries sufficient information to answer most inquiries. Nevertheless, possession of such a department is of real economic benefit because of the time it saves its users, because it prevents expensive duplication of technical literature in a company, and lastly, but most important, be- cause it makes readily available a central storehouse of technical facts classified and indexed to meet the demands of the industry or industries concerned.

The C.S.I.R.O. acid alumina process employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate discussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require roasting to 800°C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals.The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to produce a basic pregnant liquor with an SO3 : AI 203 ratio of 1'\1 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with excess of ore in the temperature range 1200-1400C.The first stage operates at 170°-1900C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper control of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, 30 min is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities such as silica, and titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide, and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4, can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C.S.I.R.O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3Al203.4S03.9H20) is also more convenient for calcination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C.S.LR.O process.

O modelo do Gradiente de Tensão (SG) e a Teoria da Distância Crítica (TCD) são usados para estimar o limite de fadiga de corpos de prova com entalhes alongados, e essas estimativas são testadas em C(T) modificados submetidos a tensões cíclicas de amplitude constante com uma razão de tensão R = 0.1. Os valores medidos são comparados com as previsões feitas por ambos os modelos. As previsões do modelo SG estiveram mais de acordo com os resultados experimentais. Também foi demonstrado que o modelo SG é quase equivalente à TCD no caso de entalhes com raios grandes, quando a TCD usa o método do ponto. Para o caso de entalhes afiados, os valores dos limites de fadiga previstos pela TCD são mais conservativos que os previstos pelo modelo SG.

Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for' which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the relationship between cur-rent load and temperature rises in coal mine trailing cables. Six low-voltage, unshielded, portable power cables were continuously and intermittently loaded with direct current of various magnitudes. Temperature rises within and on the cables were measured with thermocouples, and the data were recorded with a computer. Thermal time constants were calculated, which fixed the periods of the duty-cycle tests. Relationships between average temperature at the conductor-insulation interface and current load were established. The steady-state and intermittent currents that produce a 90° C average conductor-insulation temperature were then determined. Comparisons with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICE A) steady-state ratings revealed that 10 to 25 pct more current than recommended ICEA ampacities is required to reach rated insulation temperature. Examination of the maximum intermittent temperatures attained showed that autoignition of coal dust and burn injuries to personnel handling the cable would not be concerns if the temperature at the conductor-insulation interface averaged 90° C.

"The Mount Milligan Mine, owned by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TCM), started operations in September of 2013. It is located between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie and is the first major metal mine to open in British Columbia in 15 years. Based on reserves as of January 1, 2014, it has an estimated 22 year mine life with 2.1 billion pounds of copper and 6 million ounces of gold in reserves. Like all commissioning operations, there have been issues achieving design throughput and recovery due to flow sheet design, equipment failures, control philosophy, and reagent scheme. Efforts to improve overall mill performance include equipment modifications, reagent screening and testing, and grind size testing. Applying these changes to the mill and working closely with the mine has resulted in continuous improvement each month as Mount Milligan looks to achieve the nominal design capacity of 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day in the later part of 2015. Considerable focus is being placed into ensuring size reduction equipment is utilized effectively. Additional modifications and tests are being undertaken to steadily improve processes and alleviate restrictions in the mill. This paper will discuss the start-up and present ramp-up history of Mount Milligan, the current mill processes, and the steps taken to achieve expected production numbers.OPERATION BACKGROUNDMount Milligan is an open-pit copper and gold operation wholly owned and operated by Thompson Creek Metals. It is located approximately 155km northwest of Prince George, British Columbia, between the communities of Mackenzie and Fort St. James. The copper-gold porphyry deposit contains a Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 706.7 Mt at 0.18% Cu and 0.33 g/t Au, containing 2.84 billion lb. copper and 7.50 million oz. gold. Mine life is currently estimated at 22.1 years (“Feasibility Update – Mt. Milligan,” 2009). The mill is designed to process 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day and produce 400 dry metric tonnes of concentrate per day averaging 25.5% Cu and 40 ppm Au. Concentrate is delivered by truck and trailer to Mackenzie followed by rail to Vancouver for overseas shipping to various customers.Mount Milligan is considered a “zero discharge” operation meaning no process or surface water will be discharged to the environment. As well, stockpiling is very limited and is only permitted for a short period of time. This scenario presents several unique challenges. Scheduling of ore/waste production must be carefully planned as waste rock is used to build the tailings storage facility (TSF). Reagent selection is also important as persistent chemicals will have a tendency to build up in reclaim water which feeds the process water tank."

"Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. The Australian metallurgical processing industry has shown great innovation and progressiveness over the past ten years. During the same period, exploration activity, particularly by Australian companies, has increased substantially in Indonesia. Following feasibility studies, the decision was made to establish a metallurgical laboratory and design facility in Indonesia. An Indonesian partner was selected, and legal and corporate matters were determined. The laboratory was established but proved far more difficult than a similar undertaking in Australia. Australian and Indonesian staff were recruited and training programs, including training of Indonesian staff in Australia, were implemented. Difficulties of operating in Indonesia included: ò language difficulties ò _ local pace of life ò culture ò communications. Rewards of the decision to establish the means to present the technology to Indonesia have included: ò a contribution to Australia's export of technology. ò an opportunity to expand Normet's client base. ò the opportunity to learn aspects of a foreign culture. ò the means to establish a sound long term investment. This export of technology from the Australian mining industry to Indonesia is an example of the initiatives and capabilities shown by the Australian mining service industry.

"Haulage costs, in most operations, represent a large portion of total cost. Quebec Cartier Mining Company came to the conclusion t hat an electric trolley assist providing more horsepower than available from dieselgenerator sets presented the best oppor tunity for improvement. Accordingly, a testing and development program was carried out which resulted in the design, installat ion and application of a practical system. This paper describes the development of the system, the equipment used as well as the actual operation. A projection is also made to indicate further improvement in productivity. A comparison is made of truck operating data before and after activation of the trolley assist system in order to determine its economic impact."
