USE of oxygen in metallurgical operations was investigated by a committee of unusually able engineers more than ten years ago. A record of their work appeared under the title "The Use of Oxygen or Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical and Allied Processes," Serial 2502, Report of Investigations, U. S. Bureau of Mines. Shortly thereafter the A.I.M.E. published "Use of Oxygenated Air in Metallurgical Operations," based on a symposium at the New York meeting, February 1, 924. Quoting from the Bureau of Mines report In view of the many recent developments in oxygen manufacture, and considering the increasing cost and decreasing quality of our raw materials, the Bureau of Mines has taken the matter of the application of oxygen or oxygenated air to the metallurgical centers for consideration and has appointed an advisory committee to study the problem.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. The furnace matte is converted to low iron matte for further processing, and the molten converter slag is recycled to the flash furnaces. The flash furnace slag is discarded. Natural gas or coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, thus limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Preliminary experiments were conducted in a mini plant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. This paper presents the experimental results and discusses key aspects of the possible operation of the Inco flash furnace with a coke barrier separating the freeboard from the molten bath.

The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. Pere Petitot made extensive journeys in Slave lake as well as other parts of the far north.

THE property of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is in Falconbridge township, approximately thirteen miles northwest of Sudbury. From the mine and townsite, a gravel road leads to Sudbury and a branch line of the Canadian National railway to Sudbury Junction. The ore deposit is at the southeastern corner of the 'Sudbury Basin'. It lies in a sheet-like mass, striking in an east-west direction, between norite to the north and greenstone to the south. The general attitude of the ore-body is vertical, but with frequent variations in dip of as much as 10° to the north or south. The deposit is very irregular in outline, the width varying from a few feet to eighty or ninety feet. In the vertical plane, rolls are frequently encountered. Gouge is very often present at one or both ore contacts. The norite to the north shows much jointing. The chief ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. The nickel content of the ore is usually double the copper content, average assays ranging from 2 to 2.5 per cent nickel and 1 to 1.5 per cent copper. The ore is of three main types: massive, breccia, and disseminated. The breccia ore, the most common type, consists of sulphides containing rounded inclusions of highly-altered country rock, which, in places, are so large that sorting is necessary in the stopes. In the norite, the breccia ore may grade into disseminated sulphides, which frequently are sufficiently concentrated for profitable mining. In places in the breccia ore, concentrations of solid sulphide masses occur. Until early in 1935, all mining at Falconbridge was by shrinkage scoping, but this method was found to be less and less suitable as greater depth was attained. When mining had reached the 1,000-foot level, ore drawn from large shrinkage stopes was found to have been diluted as much as fifty per cent by sloughing of the wall-rocks, caused by increased rock pressure and insufficient support. It was apparent that this method of stoping was un-suitable and -Mr. E. J. Martin was engaged to superintend the introduction of a method of cut-and-fill stoping.

The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (Ministry) recently completed a slope stabilization project at Ten Mile Slide on Highway 99. The highway is an essential part of the road network connecting the British Columbia (BC) coast with the interior of the province. The landslide was first identified in the mid-1980s and has retrogressed more than 250 m upslope since then, leading to continual and expensive repairs to the highway. The Ministry engaged BGC Engineering Ltd. (BGC) and their structural sub-consultant Gygax Engineering Associates Ltd. (GEA) to develop a stabilization scheme that would halt the slide with an acceptable level of residual risk. The design required careful consideration of construction stages and the stresses induced in the structural components as the slide movement was progressively stopped as construction advanced. Four stabilization design options were shortlisted with the preferred option selected in Fall 2016. The selected solution comprised the construction of five rows of post-tensioned soil anchors upslope of the highway and a tied-back concrete tangent pile retaining wall for the roadway itself as well as reconstruction of the highway alignment, grade and drainage through the slide. Works were installed by top-down construction within defined time allowances stipulated in the contract. Significant engineering was undertaken beyond standard design processes for this complex project, such as comprehensive geotechnical investigations, aerial and terrestrial laser scanning and change detection analyses, pre-production test anchors, detailed geo-structural numerical modelling and due diligence activities to validate and optimize the design. The stabilization works have been very successful with the slide response being as predicted and the highway operating again as full two-lane service.

When a fire or explosion occurs in an underground coal mine, the atmosphere guickly becomes irrespirable. Highly irritant smoke and toxic levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide are produced, and consumption of oxygen by the fire or blast can reduce its concentration below that needed to support life. Work parties entering such a hazardous atmosphere for rescue or recovery operations are required to use, as their primary respiratory protection, a fully self-contained breathing apparatus of at least two hours duration. Apparatus used in this role has primarily been of the closed circuit rebreather type, using pressurized oxygen storage and chemical removal of expired carbon dioxide. Typically, commercial self-contained breathing devices for mine rescue have been heavy, bulky, and uncomfortable to use. The McCaa apparatus, long the industry standard, represented the best art available when it was First designed in 1926. It weighs 41 Ibs., protrudes about six inches above shoulder height, and provides breathing gas at temperatures up to 120° F. More recent designs, such as the Drager BG174A and Scott Rescue-Pak, using modern light weight materials and fabrication techniques have improved on all parameters of the McCaa to some extent. It was the intent of the Bureau of Mines, acting under the authority of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, to fund the development of a new self-contained breathing apparatus which would incorporate the best available technology and serve as a benchmark for future commercial designs, as the Bureau-sponsored McCaa had 45 years previously.

O estudo realizado tem como objetivo comparar e mensurar a capacidade de lubrificação de três produtos lubrificantes que atuam durante o processo de estampagem. O material estampado foi uma folha de flandres convencional com quatro variações de acabamentos superficiais. O ensaio utilizado foi o ensaio de estampabilidade, o qual nos fornece como parâmetro final o índice de estampabilidade Erichsen (h). Pela comparação dos índices Erichsen de estampabilidade obtidos pôde-se estimar a eficiência de cada regime de lubrificação.

High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. Potash is riot only an important ingredient in the manufacture of many products of modern industry, such as chemicals, explosives, medicines, paints, soap, matches, glass, paper, aniline dyes, bleaching agents, and a host of others, but is indispensable in agriculture. Justus von Liebig is credited with being the first to discover, about 1858, that potash salts in the soil constitute an essential plant food which is not replaced by nature when exhausted through continued cultivation, that this exhaustion results in a decreasing yield of crops, and that the virgin productivity of the soil may be restored, and indeed even increased, by the addition of suitable potash fertilizers. The fact is now well established that wherever intensive cultivation is employed, whether for the raising of cereals, cotton, tobacco, fruit, or garden truck, the replenishment of the potash content of the soil is essential to the maintenance of production. Hence potash is of primary importance in modern life, not only for the economic welfare of industry but for the production of valuable raw materials and the very food supply of the nation itself. SOURCES OF POTASH The main sources of commercial potash are: (1) The solid deposits of soluble potash minerals, such as carnallite, sylvinite, and kainite; (2) sea water, brines, and salt-lake deposits containing appreciable amounts of potash salts associated with sodium salts; (3) vegetable substances, such as wood ashes, bee sugar residues, seaweed, and sunflower stalks; (4) animal material, such as wool washings; (5) products resulting from the decay of organic nitrogenous matter, such as Indian niter; (6) dust in flue gases from cement kilns or in the top gases of iron blast furnaces; and (7) insoluble potash minerals, including alunite, feldspar, leucite, muscovite, and glauconite, all of which contain a considerable quantity of potash.1

Liquid-solid separation and slurry handleability relate directly to commercial plant ramp-up success or lack thereof. The paper provides a well-proven approach for testing, scale-up and commercial application of difficult processes. Emphasis is placed on practical applications of rheological concepts developed both academically and empirically. The cause-effect relationship between the process chemistry and possible physical implications on the metallurgical plant operability is presented in a simple, direct form. Examples include recent results in areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. Technical process risk factors and their mitigation are included in the discussion.

This report documents the work performed and the results obtained in a 2-year development of a Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Bureau of Mines Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. The performance requirements of an inert gas generating system for the Remote Sealing System were clearly established. A thorough review of seven possible system designs meeting these requirements was conducted. An air cooled, distillate oil fired combustion type inert gas generator was selected for further detailed design, hardware fabrication, and performance testing. The Inert Gas Generator constructed under this program has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hours. The system has met or exceeded all important performance requirements. The system was used in the fire fighting efforts at the Bethlehem Mines Corporation Cambria Division Mine 33 fire and contributed to the successful containment of the fire. The system was also employed in the demonstration of entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the fall of 1978. The system is currently avail-able for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer's recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

Generally, filter media used in filter presses have a limited operational life. Besides mechanical damage, there is a growing deposition of fine particles with increasing filtration cycles, the so-called blinding, inside the filter cloth. The resulting decreasing pore diameters not only affect the efficiency of the filtration process itself by increasing the filter medium resistance, but also make it more difficult to regenerate the filter press between the individual cycles, e.g. leading to an insufficient cake discharge. Since tailings filtration requires handling of large process flows containing a significant fraction of particles in the lower micrometer range, an investigation into media rejuvenation is of interest. The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

While improvements in occupational health and safety (OHS) in the mining industry have decreased fatalities and accidents, little attention has been paid to the cultural confound of &apos;safety&apos; in the increasingly multicultural mining industry. Occupational health and safety processes often contain assumptions of cultural understanding that may not be shared or understood by mining employees. There are potentially dangerous and costly implications of cultural difference in the mining environment. Some people have been enculturated with high levels of anxiety concerning catastrophe and uncertainty while others have a more laissez faire attitude to accidents and disaster. The level of cultural anxiety about uncertainty can be a major factor in the acceptance of OHS processes. OHS manuals based on a comprehensive set of rules and procedures may assume that the authority of &apos;rules&apos; is shared by all employees regardless of a variety of cultural understandings when this may not be the case. Similarly, cross-cultural employees may not share a background or acceptance of expensive technological innovation and so resist/avoid the application of new safety equipment. Then too, OHS staff may not realise the significance of religious belief or personal responsibility on employees&apos; attitudes to safety in the workplace environment. A lack of consideration of these cultural elements could have fatal and expensive results. This paper explores the impact of cultural difference in the understanding of OHS in the Mining Industry, presents a model to improve the understanding of the cultural confound in safety, improves analysis of OHS in practical multicultural situations, provides assistance for those involved in OHS training and may become a basis for developing OHS policy and procedure.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions.
