"This paper was prepared for and presented at a lecture series on ""Materials Randling"" at McGill University. The development of trackless mining at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited is described, showing the changes in mining method and the part played by the mobile equipment in the evolution of this highly mechanized underground operation. Comparisons of loading and hauling machines are given and an attempt is made to predict some possible future developments.INTRODUCTIONTHE PROPERTY OF GASPE COPPER MINES LIMITED is located in the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, 60 miles west of the village of Gaspe and 25 miles south of the St. Lawrence River. The original discovery of low-grade ore was made at Copper Mountain in 1921. Subsequent exploration revealed the richer Needle Mountain orebodies, and eventually in 1951 the decision was made by Noranda Mines to build the mining, concentrating and smelting complex (Figure 1). Construction and development of the mine was commenced in 1952 and production started in 1955."

Most of the underground coal in the United States is mined via room-and-pillar mining methods with continuous miners. These machines operate intermittently because they have to wait for shuttle cars to interchange positions. To overcome this discontinuity in shuttle car haulage and to realize the full production potential of continuous miners, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) system through a research contract with Jeffrey Mining Machinery Div. (JMMD). The MUCH system consists of 12 rubber-tired vehicles and a bridge conveyor. The rubber-tired vehicles are connected by a unique mechanical linkage system to form a 250-ft train. The mechanical linkage permits the vehicles to track-retrack the preceding vehicle in both inby and outby directions. The cut coal cascades from one vehicle to another until it is discharged on the section conveyor belt. The MUCH system provides continuous haulage to the continuous miner. The MUCH system was initially surface tested by JMMD. Subsequent extensive testing was conducted by the Bureau at its test facilities at Bruceton, P A. Deficiencies found during testing were corrected. This report summarizes initial tests by JMMD and subsequent extensive tests and evaluation by the Bureau.

Remarks Of Mr. Robert W. Hunt, General Superintendent, Albany And Rensselaer Iron And Steel Company., Troy N. Y. - In discussing Dr. Dudley's two most interesting papers, I feel a natural hesitancy in disagreeing with conclusions formed after such careful and conscientious work. But I think he has made his deductions from too meagre premises. The analyses of but twenty-five samples are entirely too few to justify the establishment of so important a formula. When we consider that he indirectly proposes to regulate an interest amounting, even at the present low prices, to over $20,000,000 per annum, we may well hesitate before accepting a formula based upon the chemical and physical analyses of but twenty-five steel rails. Dr. Dudley touches the keynote in referring to the proposed labors of the Government Test Commission. They based their hopes of attaining success upon the chemical and physical analyses of a very large number of samples, and in the only branch of investigation which the short-sighted policy of Congress has allowed them to complete, i.e., chain cables, we find that a dozen, twenty-five or one hundred tests gave no satisfactory results. It was only after many hundreds that they were enabled to draw conclusions. There are so many circumstances bearing upon the life of a rail, that the task of extracting a correct result seems herculean. I presume I am right in stating that in our Northern latitudes early winter and spring months witness the breaking of the greatest number of rails, thus seeming to prove that an unstable road-bed has much to answer for. Then, again, broken and flattened wheels must be taken into account, but I am convinced that more rails have been broken by the treatment which they received before leaving the rolling-mill * The remarks of the participants in this debate have been written out by the speakers, and are here given without any attempt to retain the order of the dis¬cussion. While the report does not, therefore, preserve the vigor and spontaneity of the debate, it is believed that it gains in value by giving the matured views of the speakers. Optimisation of a real-time at-line monitoring system for control of industrial granule coating quality is presented. The system is based on a fluorescence imaging system, because fluorescence originates in the interiors of enzyme granules but is significantly quenched by a polymer coating (which is needed due to environmental precautions). We have developed an image analytical system for direct prediction of coating quality, which is based on application of the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) for image complexity characterisation; AMT is briefly described. The first part of the presentation addresses pixel sampling strategies within a digital industrial image, inherent in application of AMT, in which the unfolded image is regarded as a one-dimensional object in analogy with 1D process sampling in Theory of Sampling (TOS). The effects of random, stratified and systematic pixel selections in the unfolded image are evaluated. Also factors such as the fraction of image pixels and the effects of specific unfolding strategies (there are three principal strategies, termed æchopÆ, æsnakeÆ and æspiralÆ respectively) are investigated. It turns out that unsuspected artifacts are sometimes produced, related to the specifics of the unfolding procedure, which interferes with a straightforward 1D TOS process sampling analogy. These artifacts have a wider interest û among others, for 2D sampling û and therefore receive special attention in this presentation. The optimal pixel selection strategy for the AMT algorithm is found to be systematic or stratified sampling (not surprising according to TOS) of 500+ initiating points, but need to be unfolded in the novel spiral- or snake-wise fashions in order to effectively counteract these artifacts. This also has a general impact on various suggested standard schemes for 2D grid-sampling, among others, from the geoscience realms. The second part of the presentation is directed towards optimal image analytical sampling of a continuous series of fluorescent images (imaging of conveyor belts of æinfinite lengthÆ), ie optimisation of process image sampling. The minimum number of images needed to uphold a sufficiently good on-line estimate of the quality control (QC) parameter in question is found to correspond to the relatively high sampling rate of 15 - 20 per cent, which can be shown to be related to an intrinsic very high measurement error level (25 per cent) of a mandated analytical reference method.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have many key applications in traditional and advanced technologies. A shortage of several critical REEs is expected due to the discrepancy between the availability of REEs from REE deposits and the REE demand from the market. REE recovery and separation from secondary resources such as uranium wastes and recycled materials might help balance the shortfall in a cost-effective way. This paper presents data concerning the recovery of heavy REEs (HREEs) from uranium raffinate. It also discusses the design, commissioning, and operation of a solvent extraction pilot plant for the separation of REEs.RÉSUMÉ Les éléments des terres rares (ÉTR) trouvent de nombreuses applications importantes dans les technologies classiques et de pointe. On prévoit une pénurie de plusieurs ÉTR critiques en raison des divergences constatées entre la disponibilité des ÉTR provenant de gisement d’éléments des terres rares, et la demande d’ÉTR sur le marché. REE oxalate precipitation can effectively remove Fe, Al, Ca, Si, and other impurities by taking advantage of the solubility difference between REE oxalates and impurities in the acidic solution (Xu, 2005)."

"During the period June 2007 to March 2007, John Starkey of Starkey & Associates (Starkey) worked in Russia for High River Gold, supervising the engineering design work that was being done at the IRGIREDMET Research Institute, in Irkutsk Russia. The work entailed moving the Newmont No. 4 mill from Elko, Nevada to Berezitovy, a mine site north and west of the city of Skovorodino, in the Amur Region of Siberia. This was a grass roots project and required construction of all phases of the infrastructure and process facilities that are associated with a 5000 t/d open pit mine and CIP mill.During the course of this engineering design exercise, many aspects of doing business in Russia were encountered, with regard to laws, norms, and business practices. This paper discusses many of these findings. Also by living in Irkutsk, many observations on Russian life and social customs were made and these merit discussion from a general interest point of view.Prior to going to Russia, another engineering and ore testing firm (TOMS) had approached Starkey to find out if Starkey could assist them in upgrading their SAG ore testing procedures to Western standards in order to offer their clients turnkey projects, that included reliable SAG and AG grinding. TOMS was aware that Starkey had invented the SPI test but did not know that the SAGDesign test had by then been fully developed and was being offered commercially as the most accurate way in the world to design new grinding mills. They were also unaware that this new testing method had been patented by Outokumpu (now Outotec) and that this method allowed them access to a design method, through Starkey, that would lead to a manufacturer’s guarantee (by Outotec) of throughput and grind for any new semi-autogenous or autogenous grinding circuit, with or without ball mills.When Starkey started working at IRGIREDMET in June 2005, they also made a request to add a design method for SAG mills that would be considered acceptable to Western clients. From these requests, presentations were made in Russian to both institutes and each decided to join the SAGDesign Consulting Group as satellite members and buy a SAGDesign test mill to use with their Bond Ball Mill Work Index mills, to provide SAGDesign testing services. To complete the service, contracts have been put in place for Starkey to use these results to design new grinding equipment and to train engineers at TOMS and IRGIREDMET how to do this work.Starkey also undertook to train engineers at both labs to go into the field and to take the samples for SAGDesign testing programs. It is here where the SAGDesign testing service upgrades other grinding test programs because the samples to be used for design are professionally chosen, and the results will be much more likely to produce a satisfactory design. Starkey is a mining engineer and is uniquely qualified to do this task. This and the SAGDesign test are the key components that lead Outotec to offer a performance guarantee for mills designed by Starkey."

"INTRODUCTION The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply.Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment, these may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the ""betterment"" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tons of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bawl rake pro-ducts so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.Any of these three products is a source of additional reserves, but gangue must be removed before the products will comply with blast-furnace stipulations. All investigators are agreed that to effect this separation comminution must be fine enough for liberation, but beyond this point opinions diverge; some would seek new processes, while others adhere to methods and machines developed in other mining districts.In the investigation by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines working in conjunction with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy,Rolla, Mo., the latter course has been followed. Attention was first given to the sludge basins mentioned. From their contents good grades of concentrates were made and the results published 4 later commercial-scale tests were made in a pilot plant of 10 tables, and the laboratory results were confirmed, The tailings from jigging plants are high in iron, and a study of their possible retreatment showed that if they are recrushed, high recoveries of acceptable grade may be expected. The results will be published later."

Commercd explosives have evolved through this century f?om dynamite through ANFO to the current lines of Water Gels and Emulsions. Water Gels and Emulsions evolved to counter the lack of water resistance and density of ANFO yet maintain its low cost position verses dynamite. Today, explosives must be safe and inexpensive and perform under a wide range of temperatures, function efficiently in wet or dry boreholes and have a good shelf life. Emulsions meet this criterion, which is why they are the current trend products worldwide.

In most underground mines, the ventilation system is a significant portion of the total mine capital and operating cost and the largest consumer of underground electrical power. The effectiveness of the ventilation system has a major bearing on the safety, health, comfort and morale of underground personnel, and has a critical role in meeting production targets and therefore business revenue. Perhaps the most important component of the primary ventilation system is the primary fan. Correct performance testing of the primary fan during the warranty period is important not only to ensure the mine has obtained the asset that it paid for and can therefore deliver on the fanÆs crucial safety and economic role in the future of the mine, and to provide a justification for releasing final performance warranty payments to the supplier, but also to provide a benchmark or baseline against which to assess future performance issues. As there are at least three potential international standards available to measure fan performance, there has been considerable confusion regarding which of these to use for testing primary mine fans, and also the correct allowances and tolerances to use. This paper provides guidance on which standards to use for different applications, how the standards should be interpreted, what allowances and tolerances are reasonable, and other important issues to be resolved with the fan supplier prior to making a contract award. The paper also discusses practical issues and methodology for in situ primary fan performance testing.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Interactions between human beings and their work environment require the body to regulate its temperature by balancing heat production and loss. Comfortable environmental conditions are crucial for keeping workers safe and healthy and to maintain a suitable level of productivity. However, achieving a proper core body temperature may become challenging under different conditions, especially in high heat-generating workplaces such as hot underground mines. Because hot underground mines have the potential to expose workers to heat stress, compliance with standardized and regulated indices and criteria is distinctly required. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current research on heat stress and strain in hot underground mines, collected from published and specialized literature. General definitions, statistics of heat-related accidents in mining, overview of the indices, standards, and recommendations for heat stress are provided herein.

Consumption of plastics has been growing in both the U.S. and world markets since the mid-1930s. This growth is due to plastics being used to make new products and as a replacement material for existing products. This paper develops an understanding of the replacement process by looking at the use of plastic, specifically PVC, in the construction pipe industry. History details the growth of the plastics industry and a discussion of the material selection process indicates the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipe. Analysis shows that the use of plastic, as an alternative material for pipe, is having a significant effect on the cast iron, copper, clay, and steel industries. For the purpose of understanding the replacement process, three example residential systems were examined with a lifecycle cost analysis being performed. PVC was the material of choice in 1988 for all systems. Even though disposal cost was the one area where PVC was not the most cost effective, disposal costs were not sufficient to offset the overall advantage of using PVC on an economic basis. That plastic competes effectively with other materials, in terms of material properties and cost, indicates that further work should be performed to understand the impact plastics have on other material markets.

Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review, These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work.

Preparation of plans and layouts required for efficient extraction of the ore as mutually agreed with the mine operating departments.5. Chemical analyses and assays.11. Instrumentation.12. Environmental control.A staff of approximately 35 supervisors, engineers and scientists, and 80 technicians, supply the foregoing services. Consulting engineering and drafting firms are used to supply specialized services and technical personnel in-house at Timmins to handle overloads on capital projects under the direction of Ecstall engineers.The operating and maintenance departments depend on the engineering department to supply engineering, design and drafting services for any new facilities or for any planned alteration to existing facilities. To do this efficiently requires a high level of communication and co-operation with these departments. This has been a major factor in developing the present organization of the department shown in Figure 63.The organization is predicated on a strong central technical and engineering resource from which personnel can be assigned responsibilities for different projects, and in different areas, as the work load demands. Job satisfaction is very high because of the variety and challenge in the tasks. Additionally, participation in projects with production and maintenance personnel broadens each technical employee's knowledge of operating and maintenance problems."

"Feed particle size is an important variable for the primary grinding mill operation. Several commercial vision systems have proven to successfully measure online many types of ores and are used for automatic control. However, due to limitations associated with segmentation algorithms, these systems fail to provide good measurements when the feed is composed of a specific bimodal particle size distribution: very big rocks and a large amount of fine particles. This is typically the case for crushed iron ore. This paper presents a technique to overcome the limitations of existing vision systems by using 3D cameras and appropriate processing methods. It provides online particle size distribution indicators and bulk volume flow rate measurement. It is designed to be very cost-effective, robust, precise, easy to install and to maintain. The 3D system was validated in two iron ore processing plants and the results clearly show that it can be used to optimize primary grinding mill operation where 2D segmentation vision systems fail.INTRODUCTIONFragmentation measurement using digital image processing has successfully been applied in mining and mineral processing operations. Several maintenance and operating applications are already deployed in the industry: Measurement of rock fragmentation after blasting (Maerz, 1999; Palangio, 1999) (Pragyan, 2012) Truck inventory (Palangio, 2005) Monitoring of crusher mantle wear Automatic control of crushers and SAG mills (Bouajila, 2000) (Bartolacci, 2001)Commercial technologies like WipFrag (Maerz, 1999), VisioRock and others proved to be very efficient to precisely measure the particle size distribution of many types of materials. These products are mainly composed of a camera, a lighting system and an image processing system based on a segmentation algorithm. By controlling adequately the lighting conditions and with periodic maintenance on the segmentation algorithm calibration parameters, it is almost always possible to achieve reliable measurements.However, the segmentation algorithm is not adequate when the particle size distribution contains big rocks and a large amount of fine particles. In this case, the area containing the fine particles is accounted as a big rock while big rocks get segmented as multiple smaller sized particles, leading globally to a wrong measurement. This situation prevails for crushed iron ore and coke, among other materials. Figure 1 shows a picture of a material which is typically very difficult to process through segmentation techniques."

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. This report describes the development of a device for the nondestructive testing of resin grouted roof bolts by means of mechanical frequency response. Various alternative methods were evaluated and the mechanical frequency response method was selected. An interactive program of design, testing, and development culminating in the current prototype instrument demonstrated the capabilities of the method and suggested potential applications of the instrument. The resin bolt testing device utilizes a swept frequency dynamic compliance measurement in the 1 to 2 kHz range which is interpreted by an electronic signal processor to give a "GO" or "NO GO? readout. Field tests have shown that the device can reliably determine the bond quality of the front half of the bolt (nearest the roof surface). Tests were carried out on both experimentally installed bolts and typical mine bolts installed by a conventional bolting machine. The development program has led to recommendations for improvement of the prototype and future development work.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

"Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."
