"The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The permits can then be extended for 15-year periods until the end of the mine’s life."

"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

A minitest, consisting of an injection/production well and at least two observation wells designed to detect the arrival of injected fluid leached minerals, and nonideal flow, is considered in this report. The test goals are to determine the susceptibility of the host formation to uranium leaching, kinetic parameters to scale the process, and to facilitate site restoration. This report considers permeability and mineral heterogeneities and other oxidant-competing minerals. To circumvent these nonidealities, which obscure the results, methods of interpretation have been proposed and tested by a computer simulator. In complex cases, clear-cut methods of interpretation were not found; but in every case the design of a test most susceptible to interpretation has been considered. The minitest is operationally simple and can be completed in a short time. With the correct design and interpretation it can return information to evaluate economics, ensure satisfactory leachate performance, scale to larger operations, and to identify restoration problems.

A brief résumé follows of some of the most recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect. on health, safety, and injuries at coal mines: 1. There were approximately 8,510 active coal mines in the United States during 1955. In all, 82,389 regular Federal inspections of coal mines have been made since Public Law 49 became effective in May 1941; 9,823 of these inspections were made during 1955. 2. The Bureau of Mines introduced the revised Coal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course for Supervisors in the coal-mining industry on March 1, 1948. Since that date, 19,455 supervisors and those aspiring to official positions have completed such training conducted by personnel of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection.

One of the more important functions of the Federal Bureau of Mines is conservation of the life and health of employees of the mineral and allied industries. Since its very beginning the Bureau has encouraged competition between mine rescue and first-aid teams as a means of stimulating interest in safety and accident-prevention work. In addition to sponsoring competition on a national and international scale during the past 45 years, the Bureau has also assisted State mining departments, mining companies, and mining organizations in holding State, district, company, and other local meets. This assistance includes providing instructors to train teams, judges, and other contest officials. The Bureau has also furnished problems and outlines for working them, judges I discount sheets (scorecards), contest rules, and problem judges. In fact, Bureau representatives participate in nearly all State, district, and company contests and have bad complete charge of some contests.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

Salt dome hosted metallic sulfide deposits are the product of a complex evolutionary system involving halokinesis, cap rock development and diagenesis, and the generation, migration, and accumulation of basinal brines and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons play an important role in: (1) the production of calcite cap rock which hosts some of the metallic sulfide and sulfur concentrations, and (2) the generation of the reduced sulfur available for metallic sulfide precipitation and sulfur formation. Hydrocarbons and related fluids also are involved in the transporta¬tion and remobilization of the metals. Hydrocarbon consumption, in the course of cap rock development and sulfide mineralization at Hockley dome, is estimated to have been 6.4 million barrels of oil or 114 million cubic feet of methane. Mineral textures, including cap-rock banding, sulfide bands in anhydrite, and fine sulfide mineral banding indicate both episodic fluid influx and fluid compositional differences through time. Features such as pyrite "shells" and sphalerite and marcasite hemispheres may have been localized by hydrocarbon droplets and /or bacterial colonies. Marcasite mineralization in shallow strata above and flanking Hockley dome is best developed over the western and southern parts of the dome. This pattern mimics the known distribution of sulfide mineralization, which is dominantly marcasite, in the underlying cap rock. The iron sulfide paragenetic sequence in the sediments is pyritohedral and cubic + pyrithohedral pyrite followed by marcasite which is encrusted by cubic pyrite. Sulfur isotopic averages for the three stages are +20.8, -20.2, and +6.4 per mil, respectively. These values generally coincide with cap rock sulfate (+20 per mil), cap rock hosted metallic sulfides (-20 to +4 per mil), and sulfur in hydrocarbons (+5.8 per mil). Hydrocarbon compositions indicate provincial variations in oil composition and generation history. Long Point and Boling domes, which have an intergrown sulfide-sulfate-sulfur mineral assemblage indicative of mixed reducing-oxidizing environment, contain oils that are less mature than Hockley dome which appears to be more mineralogically segregated. Sterane biomarker compositions of the oils at Hockley, Long Point and Boling domes indicate a local, dominantly terrestrial source. An oil sample from supracap sandstones on the northeast flank of Hockley dome contained over 750 ppm combined Fe, Zn, Pb, and Co, indicating that hydrocarbons are carrying or remobilizing metals. Cap rock calcite and anhydrite also exhibit provincial variations in strontium isotopic ratios. Calcite and anhydrite cap rocks from several sulfide mineralized domes in the Houston diapir province have strontium isotopic ratios that are more radiogenic than Jurassic sea water (>0.7078). A calcite sample within massive sulfides at Winnfield dome also has a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7085). Variations in strontium isotopic ratios with strontium content indicate the mixing of at least three Sr-bearing fluids in the cap rock environment, one of which may have been the metal carrier. Anhydrite residues from diapiric salt have strontium ratios up to 0.7100, considerably more radiogenic than Jurassic seawater. These high ratios indicate either that salt and anhydrite recrystallized sometime post-Jurassic in the presence of a fluid with a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio, or that they precipitated in the Jurassic from a fluid with a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio than Jurassic seawater. Salt domes with cap rocks containing metallic sulfides have only been found in basins that have geopressured zones. Waters from geopressured zones in the vicinity of mineralized salt domes have salinities that are two or more times higher and iron and base metal concentrations that are three to one thousand times higher, than geopressured fluids from other parts of the basin.

"In Chile, the evaluation to reprocess tailings for elements other than the traditional Cu, Mo, Au, and Ag, as well as projects to implement long-term monitoring of mining residue sites are key elements of the government’s roadmap laid out for the mining industry for the next two decades. Characterization routines for tailings and mining residues in general have to be adapted from traditional ore and gangue mineral and micro-chemical studies. This contribution summarizes key aspects for the regional mining industry for a basic characterization of tailings with emphasis on small- to medium-size operations with limited in-house facilities and funds to carry out extensive characterization programs. The oldest tailings in Chile were deposited almost a century ago; this fact gives importance to the recovery of past ore /gangue feed information, process circuits and changes (e.g. acid to alkaline flotation), process water provenance and recovery, meteorological registers, and routines of filling a tailings impoundment. Basic characterization should include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with laser diffraction (LD) granulometry followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and automated mineral analysis (AMA) on a reduced set of samples identified by hierarchical cluster analysis. For this detailed stage, only coarse tailings are recommended for direct a study by microscopy and automated mineralogy (P80 >100 µm); for fine tailings (P80 ~30 µm) a combination of XRD and deposit type adapted sequential extraction are more informative options. In particular, for XRD of clay phases, losses of crystallinity may result in deviation of spectra from standard reference phases due to prolonged storage. To monitor surface alteration, scanning electron microscopy can be complemented by Raman spectroscopy to detect residual reagents on mineral surfaces. For reactivity modeling BET measurements are essential."

This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. "The concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by reducing capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational aspects, in terms of higher and greater process stability, and reduced operational costs mainly due to the associated lower maintenance expenditures. However, concerns exist in the minerals industry on whether large single line grinding could reduce the overall concentrator plant availability. The mechanical design and integrity, the mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as assets management aspects of this type of equipment are the key to guarantee successful availability records. Together with an overview of the added value provided by large single line grinding circuits, this paper focuses on risk mitigation strategies during mill and gearless mill drive integration, as well as on the design of the equipment itself, for the key aspects which could put at risk the operations availability.INTRODUCTIONDespite a large long term demand for commodities, the mining industry has never faced complex challenges as it is doing today. Decreasing high-quality and accessible deposits, declining ore grades in existing mines, shortages of electrical energy (e.g. in Chile) and an aging workforce are the most significant among the megatrends affecting our industry. In addition to this, flat underlying commodity prices and high price volatility are currently posing strong requirements to miners when entering into the process of approving investments.Nowadays to get projects financially approved (optimizations, expansions, new plants), capital expenditure has to be reduced, as observed up to 30% compared to the last decade, and at the same time the plant design has to be such to demonstrate that operating costs will also be significantly lower than in the past.When it comes to the concentrator plant, the concept of large single line grinding circuits provides a valid answer in project feasibility studies by significantly reducing the capital investment requirements compared to parallel lines for the same plant throughput rates. The benefits of this concept are reflected as well on the operational costs, in terms of higher and greater process stability and reduced maintenance expenditures."

"In modern blasting technology blasts are designed and analysed on an energy-mass-time relationship. The energy of the explosive is derived by computer analysis and the work potential of the available energy is expressed in numerical values. The mass involved in the blast is determined by the geometry of the blast and by the rock density. Time is also a relevant parameter, because time is required to complete the three basic stages of the breakage process.For successful application of the blasting parameters the basic mechanism of the breakage process must be understood.The physical-mechanical properties of the rock, local structural geology and the thermodynamic properties of the explosives can be brought together to create a computer model of a blast with which it is possible to predict separately the results of each parameter and to express the predicted degree of change in any parameter by actual numbers.A long-range project has started to create a ""bank"" of rock properties for as many Canadian and foreign mines as possible. A computer model has been successfully applied to predicting the effect of varying the ratio of spacing to burden at constant rock volume and significantly improved results are achieved, as the S/B ratio is increased up to about 2 to 2.5.High-speed photography has been applied to determine the time that has elapsed between zero time and the beginning of movement of the mass. The results assist in determining minimum and optimum delay time required for multiple-row blasting.The approach as described in the paper is now well proven and is clearly superior to previous methods based on powder factors and human assessment."

This paper, describing milling methods and costs at the Hillside Fluorspar Mines at Rosiclare, Ill., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on non-metallic milling methods. The milling practice described is that of one of the large mines in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field in southern Illinois and western Kentucky, on the Ohio River. Milling methods throughout the district are similar in their general principles, although details vary considerably in different plants.

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

"One of the most pervasive diseases in the mining industry is noise-induced hearing loss. The exposure of miners to noise levels above the permissible exposure level results in hearing loss in approximately 80% of coal miners by retirement age. In this context, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop noise controls for longwall mining systems, which are used to extract half of the national underground coal production.From field measurements, previous research determined that the dominant sound-radiating components at the shearer of a longwall system are the two cutting drums used to remove coal. Due to the dimensions and complexity of longwall mining systems, the NIOSH project developed a validated finite element model of the cutting drum to use in predicting the sound radiated by the drum due to the excitation forces experienced in underground operations. This same model will be used to develop engineering noise controls for the drum. The excitation forces arise from the interaction of the cutting bits and the coal and are transmitted to the cutting drum through the bit holders. Due to the adverse conditions at the face, and a lack of instrumentation approved for underground use, the operational coal cutting forces have not been assessed before. To this end, NIOSH, in collaboration with Michigan Technological University, developed a self-contained, intrinsically safe instrumented bit to measure these forces.This paper describes the development of the instrumented bit and the measuring of operational coal cutting forces at three working coal mines. The measurements revealed that the forces have a flat spectrum, representative of the impact nature of these forces, up to around 100 Hz. Above this cutoff frequency, the force magnitude decreases at a rate proportional to the inverse of frequency squared."

Within three major tectonic time frames of earth history: Microplate (±3.8 - ±2.6 billion years), intraplate (±2.6 - ±1.3 b.y.), and macroplate (=1.3 b.y. - present), precious - metal deposits are confined to specific structural, depositional and physico-chemical environments. Precambrian primary gold deposits are localized in two microplate greenstone episodes (±3.7 and ±2.7 b.y.); secondary gold in Witwatersrand placers (±2.6 b.y.). Precambrian primary platinum group metals are in anorthositic facies of layered mafic intrusions (±2.8, ±1.8 and ±1.0 b.y.). Most radioisotope mineral dates cluster - at these times and are coincident with inflections on polar wandering curves. These coincidences may reflect episodicity in lunar tidal disruptions and global deceleration effects in crust and outer core during micro- and intra- plate phases. Macroplate tectonics and an oxygenated atmosphere created favorable conditions for strata-hosted and plate suture gold and silver deposits. "Black smokers" at constructive plate margins and calc-alkalic calderas at destructive plate margins are loci for hydrothermal gold and silver.

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In compliance with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends, in, the production and uses of block granite. Some unfavorable conditions, were, thus brought to light and certain suggestions regarding a. more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study axe, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of the industry and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of twines and from Harris F. Under terms of cooperative agreements, the Federal Bureau of Mines Inter-mountain Experiment Station assisted the General Services Administration (GSA) in operating the manganese-ore purchasing depots at Deming. N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. A resident metallurgist stationed at the depots directed sampling of the ore lots for assaying, took samples for amenability testing, calculated acceptances for payments to shippers, and served as technical adviser to the depot manager. The Intermountain Experiment Station at Salt Lake City, Utah, tested the amenability of the ores to determine how much of the manganese could be recovered in concentrates assaying a minimum of 40 percent manganese (Mn) and containing a maximum of 16 percent iron (Fe), 15 percent silica (Si02) plus alumina (AI203), 0.3 percent phosphorus (P), and I percent copper (Cu) plus lead (Pb) plus zinc (Zn). All chemical analyses of the ores and test products were done at Salt Lake City. In all, 567 ore lots submitted to the Deming depot were tested by flotation to determine their amenability to concentration into specification-grade material; 421 lots were amenable, and 146 were unamenable, primarily because of high copper content or excessive silica or iron in the flotation concentrate. Chemical analyses totaling 42,700 were made on the ores submitted to the Deming depot and on the products of the amenability-test program.
