In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

"In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. This report covers operations at the Crystal-Victory and Minerva No. 1 mines in Hardin County, Ill., which are operated by the Minerva Oil Co., Fluorspar Division, with offices in Eldorado. It describes the exploration, development, and mining practices, giving costs of each. Transportation, equipment, power, labor, and other influencing factors also are discussed. The mining methods employed are those most applicable to the flat-bedded replacement deposits common to the Cave-in-Rock section of the Southern Illinois fluorspar district. The fluorspar beds occur from surface exposures to 1,000 feet deep. In this district churn drilling is the method practiced for exploring flat-bedded deposits from the surface. Aerial photography and geochemical methods for indicating mineralization have been helpful in planning a drilling program. A program usually includes enough drilling to obtain only sufficient data on the value of the ore body and its structure to justify initial development and purchase of the mineral rights under option.

The United States Bureau of Mines contracted Norecol to prepare a report identifying the regulatory processes associated with metal mine development in British Columbia using the Snip Mine as a case study. The intent of this study is to assist industry and regulatory agencies in developing understanding as to differences in objectives, perspectives and operating methods. The case study will be incorporated into a larger report summarizing the comparative advantages and disadvantages of metal mine permitting in British Columbia and Alaska. The purpose of the report is to identify the development schedule and permitting process at Snip which will assist the U.S. Bureau of Mines in suggesting improvements in environmental review and permitting processes for mine developments. The report provides an abstract of the environmental assessment review processes in Canada and the Mine Development Review Process in British Columbia and provides an understanding of the linkages between policy, legislation, and environmental review.

INTRODUCTION The Transbay-Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) Project involves the construction of an approximately 1.5-mile rail line that will extend Caltrain commuter service and the future California High Speed Rail system into downtown San Francisco. The underground rail extension will be constructed by mined tunnel and cut-and-cover methods. Tunneling challenges include difficult ground conditions, low rock cover, the presence of historic buildings along the alignment, and the large tunnel span, ranging from approximately 50 to 65 feet. Three mined tunnel construction methods were evaluated: the Stacked Drift Method, the New Austrian Tunneling Method/Sequential Excavation Method (NATM/SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). This paper describes the challenges presented within the mined tunnel section, and summarizes the evaluation of tunneling methods that led to the selection of NATM/SEM. PROJECT OVERVIEW The existing Transbay Terminal opened in downtown San Francisco in 1939. This facility is antiquated, and does not meet current building seismic safety standards or the transportation needs of the Bay Area. For these reasons, San Francisco voters approved Proposition H in 1999, which proposed to construct a new or rebuilt regional transit center at the site of the existing terminal and extend Caltrain commuter rail ser-vice to the new transit center. The new transit center is the hub of the Transbay Transit Center (TTC) Program, which will greatly enhance regional transit service by providing connectivity for six Bay Area transit providers at one facility. During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. These were bored with one-inch holes staggered on opposite sides of the pipe, the vertical interval between each hole being one inch. The holes were then stopped with...

Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

"Base metal and precious metal deposits are well known for their significant geometallurgical variation throughout the volume of the proven resource. At the metallurgical level, the plant normally processes an upper oxidised layer, a transition zone and a sulfide zone, often leading to different processing techniques for the different zones. A novel processing approach is presented whereby alkaline leaching with glycine is used to leach base and precious metals, using a copper-gold ore deposit as a case study. Glycine is a cheap, non-toxic, non-volatile, highly water-soluble crystalline solid produced industrially in bulk quantities. As a chelating ligand it forms a number of stable glycinate complexes with Ni, Co, Cu, platinum group metals (PGMs), Au, Ag, Zn, Pb, Hg and Cd, with broad stability regions over an extended temperature-pH-Eh range, allowing dissolution of these metals in the neutral and alkaline regions (pH 7–13). It has been shown that this lixiviant system can leach the metals from their oxide, oxy-halide, basic sulfate, carbonate, native and various sulfide forms, including refractory sulfides such as chalcopyrite. Extraction of the metals from their soluble glycinates is easily achieved using a range of solvent extraction and precipitation processes, and the glycine remains stable in aqueous solution for recycle and reuse. Minerals bearing metals in Groups 1 to 8 of the periodic table are normally unaltered. This technology therefore provides a highly selective leaching environment for the extraction of numerous scarce metals of economic interest, with minimal interaction with gangue minerals, whilst using environmentally benign reagents. Problematic leach residues such as jarosites, elemental sulfur and silica gels are averted through this processing approach. This technology allows hydrometallurgical processing that is much less domain-sensitive in the geometallurgical sense, and utilises essentially the same key reagents for the whole deposit.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, Oraby, E A and Tanda, B C, 2016. Published or available data on safety in quarries are few except those pertaining to blasting issued by manufacturers of explosives. During the past 25 years the quarrying industry (including various types of quarries producing many different materials) has had a markedly improved accident experience. The downward trend has not been phenomenal or has it been uniform from year to year, owing to occasional major disasters; but from the information at hand it appears that improvement during the 25-year period has been definite.

And yet a lot has changed in the design of the hoist from those early days of underground mining. These changes are driven by the need for greater productivity and reliability at ever increasing depths without compromising the all important safety demanded by the industry today. UNDER the auspices of the Institute's Committee on Industrial Preparedness, a symposium was arranged for the Annual Meeting on the subject "Ores, Metals, and the War," with many well-known Government men and industrialists participating. Wilfred Sykes, president of the Inland Steel Co., of Chicago, presided, with C. K. Leith and Clyde Williams as vice-chairmen, Mr. Williams presiding over the latter part of the meeting. On the Auditorium stage in the Engineering Societies Building was a formidable corps of "experts," with an audience of several hundred to hear what they had to say and to ask questions.

"IntroductionEnvironmental pollution problems, caused by gases or effluents, by high noise levels or from air borne dust, are placing increasing demands of the operators, from statutory authorities, and from the general public, to adopt more stringent dust control measures. This requires that a successful plant dust control program be an integral part of any plant operation. While a successful environmental program is a key factor in maintaining productivity and good labour relations, anticipation of future environmental regulations during the plant design phase can avoid the high cost of plant upgrading, or dealing with pulmonary conditions in the work force in subsequent years.Particulate removal, conventionally called dust collection, involves the removal of coarse- and fine-particulates from the airstream. Although generally limited to that required for contro!Hng plant generated air emissions, particulate control equipment also has a wide application for air cleaning and filtration inside the plant, as well as for recovery of usable products.In the late 1950s and early 1960s the public became more concerned with the problems of air pollution. This increasing concern was stirred by an awareness of the extremes to which water pollution had progressed in many of the rivers and lakes, by increasing perception of air pollution as detected by visible smog and harsh chemical odors, by the alarming rate of increase of smog plagued cities and communities, and by specific incidents where ill health could be traced to specific episodes of air pollution. Particle size is perhaps the most important single factor affecting particulate control. Large particles (over 5 microns) constitute the major mass fraction of most sources of emission and economical control equipment dqes exist for their efficient control. However, while these larger particles frequently represent the source of soiling and unsightly smoke plumes, they are not a major health problem as they tend to settle relatively quickly, are more easily scrubbed from the atmosphere by rain, and are not able to penetrate the respiratory system. By far the most important form of particulate air pollution is the fine particulate, (below 3 microns) which is harmful to the pulmonary system. The adverse effects caused by this particulate matter on human health are for the most part related to injury to the surfaces of the respiratory system. Particulate material in the respiratory tract may produce injury itself, or it may act in conjunction with gases, altering their sites or their modes of action. A combination of particulates and gases may produce an effect that is greater than the sum of the effects caused by either individually (i.e. synergistic effect)."

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

"Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. The author points out that corrosion works 24 hours a day, every day. It is an economic reality that the cost of corrosion is inevitable and that its cost should be incurred in the least expensive way. An economic evaluation technique to properly assess its relative impact is the Discounted Cash Flow Method. Various remedial and corrosion control measures are available and these, when coupled with a planned corrosion control program, help reduce the cost of corrosion.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) By the old method of determining platinum in ores and bullion, the silver-alloy first obtained in the regular course of assay is parted in strong sulphuric acid and the residual metal weighed. This is re-alloyed with silver by a second cupellation and parted in nitric acid, the residual metal being again weighed. Any difference shown between the two weighings is assumed to be, and is called; platinum. Sometimes it is so, and if any considerable amount of platinum be present, there will be a decided difference between the two weighings; but a slight difference is no real evidence whatever of the presence of platinum. On the other hand, the second weight may equal or possibly exceed the first, even when traces of platinum are present. Again, other members of the platinum group may go into solution in nitric acid more or less. If present, these would be called platinum and escape detection. The method does not provide any direct tests whatever as to the presence or absence of platinum. It is often indecisive, and sometimes jives erroneous results. It is, therefore, quite unsatisfactory. Being called upon many times to determine platinum in a wide variety of materials, particularly when present in very small amounts, I have realized the disadvantages and defects of this old method. RBH Note: the following item is a little different than the usual, in that it shows how explosives were used in the past to assist in putting down holes for iron ore prospecting on the early Mesabi Range of Minnesota. The way explosives were used would not even occur to the modern explorationist, given the equipment available today. The reason for the great difficulty in putting down a hole was that the area was covered with debris from the great glaciers of the past (the same ones that carved out the Great lakes). This debris consisted of boulders, clay, sand, and any other imaginable mixture of materials.
