The proposed Flambeau Mining Project is based on a high grade copper deposit located approximately one mile southwest of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The project involves only the mining, crushing, and shipping of ore to facilities outside of Wisconsin for processing. The Wisconsin environmental regulations include provisions for identifying wetlands, the requirements for minimizing the disturbance of wetlands, and the need to establish new wet-lands to replace any wetlands which have to be disturbed.

Since coal -mining records have been kept , reports of all mining States show that each year the lives of many workers have been sacrificed in the production of coal , and Illinois has contributed its share , Illinois reports for the 50 years 1882 to 1932 , inclusive , show that 6,673 men were killed -- 6,121 underground , 340 in the shaft , and 212 on the surface . Of the fatalities underground , 3,116 were caused by falls of roof or sides , 1,111 by haulage , 630 by explosives , 577 by gas explosions , 139 by electricity, and 548 by other causes ; 166 of the shaft fatalities were caused by falling down the shaft , 143 by the cage , and 31 by other causes ; 108 of the surface fatalities were caused by railroad cars , 46 by machinery , and 58 by other causes . Most of those engaged in mining are still of the opinion that it is an extremely hazardous occupation and that it is practically impossible to operate without accidents ; however , students of safety in mining now believe that with the proper attention to accident prevention mining may be conducted with little , if any , greater accident rate than that of other supposedly hazardous industries . There is no mystery connected with accidents in mining ; reports show that the majority are due to two main causes , falls of roof and sides and haulage . Mining companies in Illinois , as well as in other States , have proved in the past few years that the hazards of mining , like those of other industries , can be controlled to a large extent and the mines operated with few if any accidents , provided a great enough effort is made by employer and worker . Although the past accident rate of Illinois may compare favorably with that of other mining States it is higher than it should be ; the fact that 6,673 men (an average of 133.46 per year) were killed in and around the mines of the State between 1882- and 1932 indicates that accident prevention should receive more consideration in the future than in the past .

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

In 1969, the Congress of the United States declared that "the first priority and concern of all in the mining industry must be the health and safety of its most precious resource - the miner," Therefore, Public Law 91-173, Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, was enacted. Since haulage accidents account for a high percentage of coal mining accidents, Section 314e, ?Hoisting and Mantrips,? was included in the law. This section states: "Each locomotive and haulage car used in an underground coal mine shall be equipped with automatic brakes, when space permits. Where space does not permit automatic brakes, locomotive and haulage cars shall be subject to speed reduction gear, or similar devices approved by the Secretary which are designed to stop the locomotive and haulage cars with the proper margin of safety."

An unprecedented growth in demand for coal exports has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee that their capacity expansion projects will meet the required demand. These projects, however, are taking place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment - competing rail and coal terminal service providers as well as a myriad of competing mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing system complexity and integration has driven the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems, their sensitivity to uncertainty and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to both maximising value and minimising risk.Recently, TSG has worked closely together with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of key stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to develop independent system master plans. These master plans have provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. A simplified economic model is derived for the financial return from a new gold mining project. The model is used to analyze the effects of changes in the mining rate, capital costs, working costs, value of the reef and the stoping width. The most effective avenues for improving the return from a new project are indicated. It is shown that those technological innovations which would improve the return significantly, and therefore make it possible to open more mines, are the use of smaller mines, means for improving the mining rate to capital costs ratio for smaller mines, planning and control of mines by computer simulation, an improved mine valuation procedure and means for mining at a decreased stope tramming width.

"Attempts to reduce the energy requirements of water recovery in the process industries have resulted in the development of techniques to freeze and purify aqueous solutions that take advantage of local climatic conditions. Natural freezing is a technique by which aqueous solution is exposed to freezing air temperatures, resulting in the production of a layer of ice on the surface. As the ice layer tends to exclude solute, a concentrated solution is formed. However, due to dendritic ice growth along the advancing growth front, small quantities of solution are trapped within the ice, decreasing the purity of the water recovered. The ice produced can then be allowed to thaw in order to recover the water using low grade plant heat. As the more concentrated parts of the ice melt first, a purer ice remains. In this study, 0.5 molal magnesium sulfate solution was frozen under simulated natural freezing conditions at temperatures between –1 and –6°C. The ice produced was thawed at either room temperature or 50°C. Up to 40% of the water was recovered with a separation efficiency of above 95% when thawing at room temperature.INTRODUCTION Advances in refrigeration technology have made low-temperature separation processes increasingly appealing to an energy-conscious society. The latent heat of freezing of water is about seven times smaller than the latent heat of evaporation providing freezing with a strong thermodynamic advantage over the traditional evaporation-based processes. The result is the development of a wide variety of processes that fall under the term Freeze Concentration (FC), which describes a variety of techniques in which an aqueous solution is concentrated by the creation and subsequent removal of ice (Williams et al., 2015).FC processes exploit the freezing behaviour of aqueous solutions as dictated by their respective water-salt phase diagram. When, for example, a solution of magnesium sulfate is cooled to a temperature below its freezing point but above its eutectic temperature of –4.1?C (Figure 1) then, if the concentration of MgSO4 is less than the eutectic concentration (about 1.7 m), ice will form until the solution concentration reaches its equilibrium concentration at the given temperature on its phase diagram. If the concentration is greater than the eutectic concentration, MgSO4 solid will precipitate until the concentration reaches equilibrium. It is for this reason that ice can be selectively produced in FC processes (Randall & Nathoo, 2015)."

There are many of us who desire lo sell Canadian crude oil in this market. Further, and what is really important, there are many of us who desire to buy Canadian crude oil for this market. It is fundamental that for crude oil to be sold in the world market, it must ?be sold at competitive prices. At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.

CHANGES in mining practices have evolved so quietly and unobtrusively that perhaps we scarcely appreciate how truly startling these changes are unless we cast our minds back so as to compare the past with the present. Such retrospection is, indeed, necessary when attempting to forecast the future, for it is only by carefully reviewing the past that we can hope to obtain an indication of what the future may hold in store. In this instance, it is not necessary to delve into the very early history of . coal mining, as our purpose will be served if the last three or four decades are reviewed, a period that is still fresh within the memory of many of us. These earlier days might be termed the selective period of mining, for at that time the coal resources of the world had not been tapped to anything like the extent they are at present and this condition enabled the owners and operators to exercise selective powers and only mine such seams of coal as could be most easily reached an worked at the lowest possible cost and which, at the same time, would suit the requirements of the market. Carrying this thought of selective mining still further, the miner, who was then an artisan skilled in all the branches of his calling, was able to select or discard such parts of the seam he was working that the co al sent out of the mine was acceptable to the consumer with just the barest minimum of preparation. Compare these conditions with the? conditions prevailing today, when coal seams of medium height, good quality, and readily accessible have been largely depleted and the operator has been compelled either to carry on his operations under much greater depths of cover where the coal is more costly to win, or else to work seams of lesser height or of poorer quality.

"The Federal Bureau of Mines serves the mining industry by approving equipment that is designed to prevent explosion, fire, shock, or toxic hazards in mines when such equipment is used and maintained in a proper manner, through research, consultation, testing, and inspection, the Bureau studies machinery and component parts submitted by manufacturers and others. Before receiving the Bureau's approval as permissible for safe use in mines, equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's various permissibility schedules. An important phase of the Bureau's research is the testing of diesel engines.Mobile diesel-powered equipment can be used safely in underground noncoal mines and tunnels when mechanical ventilation is provided to dilute and remove the exhaust gas and to replenish oxygen in the underground atmosphere. Safe ventilation is determined by suitable tests of each engine used in a diesel machine. This ventilation cannot be predicted safely, accurately, and economically from any general empirical relationship.In determining safe ventilation, the quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen generated by a diesel engine must be ascertained. These quantities are related to the displacement of the engine, its speed of operation, the design of the combustion chamber, and the fuel:air ratio needed to produce useful power. At overrich fuel:air ratios, all diesel engines generate excessive quantities of toxic carbon monoxide and smoke. The results of engine tests are used to determine a maximum fuel-injection rate at or below which carbon monoxide can be controlled by a reasonable ventilation and smoke is essentially eliminated. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are related to fuel:air ratio and the design of the combustion chamber. Their concentration in the exhaust cannot be controlled by engine adjustments, and each engine appears to have individual characteristics concerning formation of these oxides. Production of oxides of nitrogen frequently is the most important factor in determining safe ventilation."

Friction rock stabilisers, commonly termed ‘Split Sets’, friction rock bolts, or continuous friction coupled bolts are the most widely used rock bolt in the Australian underground metalliferous industry. Historically, they were used for temporary reinforcement, mainly within ore development. However, their use as primary reinforcement has grown with the demand for higher development rates at lower costs. The introduction of galvanisation has increased their longevity and pattern bolting in conjunction with weld mesh, specifically made for use in development headings, has allowed the use of friction rock stabilisers to increase rapidly with development jumbo’s undertaking the installation. The installation of friction rock stabilisers appears to be deceptively simple, particularly when compared to resin encapsulated bolts. The friction rock stabilisers capacity is a function of the borehole parameters, rock mass quality/strength, the bolt dimensions and steel quality, and lastly and perhaps the most important the operator skill levels. However, as in industry we are still seeing common occurrences of friction rock stabilisers not reaching their design pull test capacity. Pull testing the friction rock stabilisers is used to verify the installation of the design capacity. It involves loading the collar of the bolt with a hydraulic ram until the design load is reached or the bolt slips. Pull tests often show failure rates of 20 per cent or higher. This is despite over 40 years of use and with millions of units installed annually. Such high failure rates would suggest there remain issues with the quality of installation. Ground support quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) programs are needed in combination with operator training to ensure that pull test failure rates are kept as low as practical. However, there are times when despite the QAQC being completed the pull test failure rates increase quite suddenly. When this occurs, it is important to conduct a thorough investigation. These investigations often show there are several factors that are not obvious to personnel installing the bolts. To complete a useful investigation, it must also be done methodically, working through the entire process that includes less obvious factors such as steel quality and the calibration of the hydraulic pull test kit. The aim of the paper is to give mine practitioners an understanding of the complexities of friction rock stabilisers, what QAQC requirements they should be doing on-site, what can go wrong during installation and, if necessary, a process of how to conduct investigations into high friction rock stabiliser pull test failure rates.

THOUGH the largest volume use of natural gas has been, is. and in all probability will continue to be as a fuel for domestic and industrial heating, it has various market outlets, both as a fuel and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Natural gas is a preferred type of fuel where ease of control, fuel uniformity, and freedom from ash are of primary importance. Other industrially important uses are as a source of carbon black and as a fuel in various low-cost heating operations. Many other uses are of varying importance and new potential uses are continually being uncovered, some being of economic importance to the gas indus¬try as a whole, but most of them involve such small volumes of gas that they are only of passing interest. Since various products extracted from natural gas and recovered as by-products from petroleum refining, such as liquefied petroleum gas and fuel oil, are being utilized in many industrial and domestic heating applications, some consideration will have to be given such materials in order to present a reasonably complete story of the importance of natural gas. Some of these materials may prove to be transient competitors and will not be available when more profitable uses are found for them. Meanwhile, however, the potential volumes of such materials available, the current volumes being marketed, and the nature of the utilization are considered as constituting an essential part of the over-all fuel picture.

FROM prehistoric times to our own day man has struggled against extremes of climate. Human life, originating in semi-tropical or temperate areas, was unable to progress into the northern latitudes until fire was discovered and some form of clothing provided. It was found possible to maintain life even in the hottest parts of the tropics, but only at a great sacrifice of comfort and efficiency compared with the more temperate zones, or in cooler areas with the protection of clothing and artificial heat. It was no accident, but the natural result of climatic conditions, that efficiency became the greatest and civilization the most advanced in areas where the natural climate was favorable, or in cooler zones where protection against severe cold could be se-cured by relatively simple methods of conserving or producing heat.

"A number of silver producers have identified a need for a system to recover silver and gold from base metal flotation concentrates on site rather than sending the concentrate to third party smelters to improve mine economics. Historically intensive cyanidation has only been used for coarse gold gravity concentrates in batch machines but Gekko have applied the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) to these difficult to leach concentrates.The ILR’s unique ability to operate at various solid to solution ratios, high mass capacity, the ability to handle fines, the use of peroxide to aid silver leach kinetics and simple operation has resulted in significant economic benefits to Hochschild PLC’s Selene and Arcata operations. This paper describes the commissioning phase of the ILR5000BA intensive cyanidation reactors on concentrates from the Selene mine at the Ares Concentrator.INTRODUCTIONIntensive leaching of high grade concentrates in gold ore treatment is now commonplace and is considered an essential feature of most gold circuits (Lane, Fountain and LeBrooy, 2008). The devices commonly used for intensive leaching (InLine Leach Reactor, Acacia Reactor, etc) are specifically designed for the typical coarse nature of the concentrate.In some of these intensive leach applications, significant amounts of silver are co-recovered with the gold. In fact, the intensive leaching conditions of 1 to 2% NaCN in solution and high dissolved oxygen levels, overcome the issue with silver’s slow dissolution rate in traditional CIL/CIP circuits and avoids the formation of insoluble silver sulphide minerals on the surface of the gold (Marsden, 2006).There are a significant number of mine operators producing silver in the form of mixed base metal sulphides flotation concentrates. Typically the mine operators are paid for the silver after processing of the concentrate by the base metal smelter whom recovers the silver during the refining process."

"During the last two decades lamproites have joined kimberlites as the only two known primary sources of economic quantities of diamonds. This paper contrasts the petrography, primary and xenocrystic mineralogy and pipe geology of these petrogenetically separate rock types. The petrographic discrimination of kimberlites and lamproites from each other, as well as other rock types found during diamond prospecting, is discussed. Kimberlites and lamproites can be classified texturally and mineralogically. Such classifications highlight the differences between, and among, lamproites and kimberlites. The implications of these differences for diamond exploration programs are discussed, with particular emphasis on the application of petrography. IntroductionKimberlite was the term coined in the late 19th century to describe the host rock of diamond at the type locality, Kimberley, South Africa (Lewis, 1887, 1888). Innumerable kimberlites are now known worldwide; some of them contain economic quantities of diamond (e.g. South Africa, Botswana and Russia) while many are barren. Jennings (1989) suggests that less than 3% of the known kimberlites can be considered to be commercial. Kimberlite was thought to be the only important primary source of diamond for approximately a century. Until the late 1970s, lamproites were thought to be only academic curiosities. Some workers (e.g. Wade and Prider, 1940), however, did comment on certain similarities between lamproites and kimberlites and, hence, inferred a potential for lamproites to carry diamonds.The term lamproite was introduced by Niggli (1923) for leucite-bearing rocks from southeast Spain and Wyoming which had some unusual geochemical characteristics. Wade and Prider (1940) used the term lamproite (as defined by Troger, 1935) to embrace rock types found in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. All the lamproites described by Wade and Prider (1940) form distinct topographic features. Subsequently in the late 1970s, additional pipes, which have little or no relief, were discovered in the same area, but only as the result of a major diamond exploration program (Atkinson et al., 1984; Jaques et al., 1984, 1986). Some of these bodies are diamondiferous. In 1979, the Argyle pipe was discovered in the East Kimberley area which, in terms of grade, is the richest known primary diamond deposit in the world with some parts of the body having grades greater than 500 carats/100 tonnes (Madigan, 1983; Boxer et al., 1989). All the initial new discoveries in Western Australia resulted from classic stream sampling for ""kimberlite indicator minerals"" (Atkinson, 1989)."

THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author's statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer's proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. Thirty-five years ago underground coal mining equipment consisted of simple but rugged machines powered by electric motors and hydraulics. The machines were maintained by maintenance personnel armed with a basic knowledge of hydraulics, electricity, and mechanical design. Over the years the the machine has been transformed into powerful complex mining systems. The maintenance burden has also increased. During this period significant advances have been made in maintainability engineering and system design techniques. Many of these innovations and techniques are applicable to the design of underground mining equipment. The objectives of this project were to; (1) determine the extent to which maintainability design concepts and principles have been applied to the design of underground coal mining equipment, (2) try to assess the impact of equipment design for maintenance on productivity and safety, and (3) develop a maintainability design guideline to enhance the design of new or rebuilt equipment. An equipment design review was completed at ten operational coal mines. Interviews were also conducted with mine management, safety, and maintenance personnel to identify machine specific design advantages and problems. Visits were also made to six original equipment manufacturers to discuss the design of their equipment for maintenance. Volume I presents an overview of the protocol used and a summary of the findings. Volume II includes the maintainability design guide for underground mobile mining equipment.
