The Government of Belize maintained strict control over spending in 1982 as a means of protecting its import-dependent economy against the effects of a general worldwide recession. The modest economic performance was not expected to differ substantially from the $152 million2 gross national product (GNP) estimated for 1981. Exports and reexports were expected to decline in 1982, partly as a result of the Mexican peso devaluation. Imports were also expected to decline slightly in 1982, but the overall trade deficit was projected some-what higher than the $44 million experienced in 1981. On September 21, 1982, Belize became an independent state. As a result, the new Government became eligible for assistance from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Belize's independence from its former status as a colony of Great Britain was marred somewhat by the unsettled territorial dispute between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala declared Belize was a part of Guatemala and. therefore. refused to recognize it as an independent state. Negotations between Great Britain and Guatemala continued without resolution.

The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense' to suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial dining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of a1lu;ial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into ;Russia." The statement itself ii not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward.

As one phase of a general program of enthracite mine-fire research initiated by the Bureau of Mines in September 1935, a study of the records of past fires was considered a necessary approach to a proper understanding of present and future fires because only limited information could be obtained directly from existing active fires on account of their inaccessibility. Through the courtesy of interested operators, all available records of fires that had occurred in a large group of steep-pitch anthracite mines in the Western Middle and Southern fields of the Pennsylvania anthracite district were examined and analyzed for data on the causes, costs, behavior, and control of fires, and this report is primarily a discussion of these factors based on a close study of these particular records. Mining Conditions The records pertain to a group of mines that have contributed about 12 percent of the total Pennsylvania anthracite production and constitute a large proportion of, and well represent, steep-pitch operations in this district. Throughout the area represented, the coal occurs as a series of up to 20 parallel seams in folded slate and sandstone strata and almost entirely on pitches of 400 to 80°, with vein thicknesses of 5 to 60 feet. Practically all are old mines with histories dating back to 1850, or thereabouts, and present operations are either under or adjacent to mined-out areas extending to surface or to the saddles of anticlines. All operations are at relatively shallow depths, that is, within 1,000 feet, vertically, of the surface. Mining methods are largely a heritage of the past and embrace typical breast and pillar operations with practically no mechanized mining and with the coal shot ?off the solid.? Most of the mines are rated as gassy and are operated now on a closed-light basis. Permissible explosives are now used entirely for breaking coal, and dynamites for rock work and chute-starting blasting.

THE object of the Bradley process is to free manganese oxide from its associated gangue and separate the contained iron oxide by dissolving the manganese and precipitating it from the solution. 'The fundamental features of the process are : making. both 1 a manganese ore and an iron ore; effecting a separation of manganese .and. iron by means of selective roasting; leaching- the manganese from the roasted ore by using ' ammonium sulfate; precipitating the manganese by using the ammonia gas generated during leaching; fixing the precipitate by oxidizing with air; breaking down and reforming the ammonium sulfate, so that daily very little additional ammonium sulfate beyond that originally charged into the system is required; washing the manganese precipitate and the iron-silica residue and evaporating the liquor to conserve the dissolved salts in the moistures of these two products and 'to reduce the sulfur content,; drying the precipitates; magnetic wet-concentration of the iron-silica residue; sinteriny the manganese-and .the' iron-concentrates.

At the outset may I express my sincere appreciation to the organisers of this Congress for their kind invitation to me to participate in the plenary session. May I also thank the CMMI for inviting me to be their fifth distinguished lecturer. This is a signal honour and one which is sincerely appreciated by my Group and myself. The subject of gold is a very emotive one. It conjures up different images in the minds of a wide variety of people. For many of us it is very simply the ultimate metal. In ancient times gold was sought after and treasured; it was the chosen metal for adornment and many of the best preserved artefacts of that time were hand-fashioned from gold which had been won by primitive mining techniques. Gold's rarity and its value was recognised by those who fashioned the earliest gold coins thus underlining gold's special place as a store of value.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste landform. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using a case study developed at a large iron ore open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.CITATION:Narendranathan, S, Lee, E C, Setchell, S and Edmondson, P, 2015. During the last decade or more , experimental research on commercial detonators used for initiating the detonation of dynamite and other high explosives has led to important improvements . Developments , especially in the United States , have been directed toward improvement in the construction of detonators to make them safer to manufacture and use . More suitable and safer initiating charges also have been found . Although for many years mercury fulminate was unrivaled as the initiating charge for dynamite , during the last decade it has been replaced to a large extent by less sensitive , more efficient, and cheaper combinations of ignition , priming , and base charges . Commercial detonators were once of relatively simple construction and almost universally identical . Today they are technically complex, with special nodifications for particular uses ; they have developed along different lines n various countries and even among the several manufacturers within any one country .

The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

OF the new production of non-ferrous metals in 1930 gold will rank first in value. We usually think of copper as the most important non-ferrous metal. The copper industry as a whole, that is, adding copper production to copper fabrication, is the largest non-ferrous metal industry. Prior to the world war; however, gold led in value of new metal produced. During the war copper passed gold in value, but gold regained its position during the 1921 depression. For the past several years copper has again passed gold, but in 1930 gold promises again to regain the lead. The gold producer has at times been called a social parasite, largely because we ' cannot eat or drink gold, or because we cannot use it for clothes or for the construction of buildings. Let us briefly examine this accusation.

This Section describes four alternative methods for load testing of drilled shafts: high strain dynamic test (HSDT), rapid load test, static load test, and bottom load test. Until recently, static load tests were the only method available for verifying the capacity of a drilled shaft. However, because many drilled shafts carry very high design loads, the static load test was prohibitively expensive. The alternative methods, HSDT, rapid load testing, and bottom load testing are gaining acceptance because of their lower cost and faster implementation. However, these different methods do not necessarily yield the same results. This section describes the load testing methods and the differences that may occur when interpreting the test results.

The purpose of this study is to formulate practical guidelines for active underground mining in close proximity to water bodies. This was accomplished through systematic completion of three phases of study: I) Collection and Documentation of Data; II) Application of Existing Guidelines to Case Histories of Previous Inundations; and III) Development of Recommended Guidelines for Underground Coal Mining Near Bodies of Water. Phase I of the study involved a worldwide data collection effort designed to obtain foreign and domestic guidelines for mining near water bodies, and accident records and case histories of accidental mine inundations. Within Phase II, existing guidelines were categorized and classified and then evaluated as to their effectiveness in precluding past inundations had they been in effect at the time of inrush. Advantages and disadvantages of existing guidelines were defined. Drawing on the broad data base established in previous study efforts, Phase III was directed at development of viable guidelines to promote the greatest possible coal extraction while precluding accidental mine inundation. Two levels of guidelines are presented; Level I Guidelines require little or no subsurface exploration on the part of the mine operator, while Level II Guidelines recommend various testing and investigative procedures to permit greatest possible mineral extraction. This report presents findings and conclusions of the study.

Industrialization is raising the standard of living of people everywhere. The common man is demanding and getting more of everything. Perhaps more markedly than most other things, he is consuming more water. A hundred years ago water for domestic use, in all but a few large centers, was lugged from wells in buckets. This still is true in many rural areas, even in the enlightened United States of America. but pumps and pressure systems are rapidly replacing the "old oaken bucket," even on farms and in isolated country homes. Nevertheless, many still fail to see water as a ?commodity? in the same sense that coal, lumber, fertilizer, and bread are considered as commosities. Water is too frequently taken for granted.

An alternative stoping method has been adopted for narrow vein stoping at the Tasmania Mine in Northern Tasmania. Colloquially described as ‘Radial-in-Reef’ (RiR) stoping, the method employs the drilling of radial rings in the plane of the Reef from a drill stub located at the geographic centre of the proposed stope panel.Production from the Western Zone of the Tasmania Reef has been undertaken remotely from the Reef since 2007, after a detailed geotechnical engineering analysis indicated that the integrity of the sill drives could not guarantee an acceptable level of confidence should an anticipated seismic event occur within a radius of 10 m. The key tenet of the remote mining approach was the exclusion of personnel from sill drives once stoping had commenced. The remote mining method had to be ‘retrofitted’ to four existing stoping blocks totalling 11 sill drives which totalled 160 m vertically. The remote mining method proved to be complex, cumbersome and very expensive. However, the ore was extracted successfully.By early 2010, previously developed ore had largely been exhausted and the future development with an orebody open at depth presented the opportunity to review the current extraction method. However, the new extraction method needed to maintain the tenet of excluding personnel from sill drives of active stoping blocks, but seek opportunities to reduce the difficult and costly aspects of the previous method. The new ‘Radial-in-Reef’ stoping reduced the development requirement from six to two drives per ore block. Cost implications aside, the significant reduction in prestoping extraction ratio was expected to also reduce the likelihood of seismicity. Transverse production rings were designed to be drilled radially from a drill stub mined from a mid-stope footwall drive. Stopes totalling up to 7000 tonnes were planned be fired in a single electronic blast. Extraction was designed to take place from a basal sill drive under teleremote operation. At the time of writing, the method was under trial.

The rapidly growing demand for titanium pigments has aroused new interest in actual and potential sources of supply of titanium- bearing ores , which only a comparatively few years ago were almost unmarketable . This paper , which supplements a general circular entitled " Titanium" ( Information Circular 6365 ) , represents a summary of current trade literature and Government reports , together with some hitherto unpublished material that has accumulated in the files of the Bureau of Mines . The purpose of this pamphlet is simply to indicate the commercial possibilities of the deposits , and the discussion is confined almost entirely to the three commercial ores , ilmenite , rutile , and magnetite ( titaniferous iron ore ) .

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully electro-refining titanium metal. Refining is accomplished in e fused-salt electrolyte using offgrade metal as the anode and collecting the purified metal at the cathode. The characteristics and requirements of the various alkali chlorides tested as electrolytes are discussed in relation to relative ease of purification and serviceability. The various types of cells designed and tested for electrorefining are illustrated and their method of operation discussed. The individual advantage of each cell and the purpose for which it was designed are reviewed. The magnitude of the cathode current density was found to depend largely upon the quantity of soluble titanium chloride in the electrolyte. The physical condition of the anode also greatly affected the cathode current density.

India is the 5th largest producer of steel in the world and is slated to produce more than 180 Mt by 2020. Expectedly about 50 % of this would be through the Blast furnace route and the rest through Sponge iron / DRI route. Considering that there will not be any major change in iron making technology by that time, the Blast operation would require lump ore (10-40mm) with around 64% Fe grade and sinter fines (<10mm) with 60% Fe (min) as its feed. DRI process would need calibrated ore of size 5-18 mm as the most suitable size of feed. It is also expected that of the total requirement of ore for the DRI route a significant part would be DRI pellets. In India, there is considerable debate going on regarding the technology to be adopted for the processing of iron ore and there is a lack of clear consensus. The above scenario indicates that the processing requirement of iron ore in the country would involve both washing technology as well as beneficiation technology. CDE Asia Ltd is in the forefront of iron ore processing in the country and the experience gained by the company over the last few years of functioning has led the company to believe that route to be adopted depends on the end product requirement and the starting grade of the feed. Keeping in mind the nature of the feed required for the Blast furnace & DRI operation; it is obvious that good washing technology would be highly beneficial to the iron ore industry. Depending on the grade of ore available the limits of washing will be decided and equipment for lump ore beneficiation such as jigs could be incorporated into the washing circuit. Scrubbing of ore either before washing or selectively scrubbing the lumps could be necessary. Very low grade ore and jig rejects would be required to be totally ground and beneficiated for the production of pellet feed in order to utilize the iron ore resources entirely. Another source of ore for pelletisation would be slimes generated from the washing process as well as the huge quantities already available in the tailings dams in the operating mines. Deslimimg and magnetic route of beneficiation could release at 30-40% of the Fe locked up in these tailings ponds/dams. The paper describes the concept with examples from operating plants and proposes how the adoption could be engineered through test work and proper plan of integration. In July of 2013, Lundin Mining acquired the 2,000 tpd Eagle nickel and copper project from Rio Tinto. The project had been put on hold earlier in the year and construction was approximately 50% complete. Lundin immediately accelerated project activities and by September of 2014 the project was constructed, commissioned and ramping up. The newly commissioned facilities went on to reach design throughput, recovery and product quality targets by the end of the year. This was accomplished ahead of schedule and below budget despite numerous obstacles including the worst winter on record in the past 50 years for the area. What led to the success of the project, and in particular the commissioning phase of the project? This paper takes a high level look back and provides an overview of the methodology used, key issues encountered and lessons learned to answer this question.

PETROLEUM consumption during 1946 broke all previous records and further increases are expected during 1947. U. S. consumption amounted to an average of 5,280,000 bbl a day, of which 4,745,000 bbl was domestic crude oil, with the rest from natural gasoline production and crude oil imports. World consumption during the past year, excluding Russia, is estimated at 7,200,000 bbl daily. Forecasts for 1947 indicate a U. S. consumption of 5,425,000 bbl daily of petroleum products. This is expected to be made up of 4,655,000 bbl of domestic crude oil production, 340,000 bbl of natural gasoline production, 400,000 bbl of crude oil imports, and the rest from stocks. Petroleum&apos;s principal use is still as a fuel. The field remains highly competitive, but petroleum has been continuously progressing. Less than fifty years ago, oil supplied only one twentieth as much of the nation&apos;s total energy as coal, but today it supplies over half as much.

Mining has evolved in recent years, taking steps forward in the way that the industry is considerate of the environment and the communities in which it operates. Technology plays a major role in that evolution. Osisko Mining?s Osisko Mine near Malartic, Quebec is developing a new way of doing business. One manager said, ?We are building the Osisko culture,? but the company is doing many things that could become industry changers. Much of the change is driven by mine ownership and management to offer a better workplace and better community relations. Mining equipment manufacturers are changing, too, by engineering products with more operator comfort, fuel economy, ease of maintenance and more cleanly designed machines. And for those drills working close to communities, smaller bore sizes and sound retention are just two changes for the better.
