"In September, 1968, a survey of operating mines in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories was undertaken to determine the role of Indigenes (Indian, Metis, Eskimo) on the mines, and the attitude of mine management to these employees. The operating mines in the Territories had (at that date) a total employment of 2,002 men, of which 91 (4.5 per cent) were Indigenes. Indigenes make up 45 per cent of the Territorial population (18 per cent in the Yukon and 63 percent in the Northwest Territories). The paper documents some of the problems associated with indigenous employment in mines. A study was undertaken to determine the role of Indigenes (Indians, Metis, Eskimos) in operating mines in the Yukon and in the North-west Territories. In addition to the mines north of the 60th parallel, the experience of several other Canadian mines was examined. The general picture obtained is considered to be representative of the Canadian mining industry."

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnel boring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. Barite, the sulfate of barium, occurs in many geological environments in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. The commercial deposits of barite may be classified into three major types. 1. Vein and cavity fillings that occur in rock fractures, along bedding planes, and in various solution structures. 2. Bedded deposits in which barite occurs as the principal mineral or cementing agent in stratiform bodies in sedimentary rocks. 3. Residual deposits occurring in unconsolidated material formed by the weathering of preexisting rocks. The geologic characteristics of each type of deposit are of fundamental importance to the successful search, development, and economic use of barite deposits.

"The story of packaged explosives begins with the use of black powder (also called gunpowder) in mining. Although discovered in the 13th century, it was not until 1627 that the first records of use in mining is recorded. It took until the early 1800's before its use began in underground coal. Althougha free-running, granular material, its recommended (and safest) manner of use was for the miner to pour it into ready-made or onsite formed paper bags prior to insertion into the borehole. This was absolutely necessary in horizontal or upward-slanting holes."

MR. Woo's succinct description of the mining and smelting of silver-lead in Mongolia, with the roasting-and-reduction process and cupellation, has much interest as a picture of methods that not only may have been in use, as he suggests, a thousand years ago, long before the existence of mining schools or chemical laboratories, but probably vary little, if at all, from the practice of prehistoric times, when King Priam's handsome silver vases, cups and bowls were formed. For it is highly improbable that such large objects were made from comparatively rare native silver, and the metal must have been smelted from ore, and most likely in great part from galena,, with cupellation of the lead. Dr. W. A. P. Martin, in his excellent book on the Lore of Cathay, points out that Chinese alchemy is over 2000 years old, antedating the European by at least six centuries; and he infers that the Chinese skill in metallurgy and many branches of practical chemistry owes its origin to " those early devotees of the experimental philosophy who passed their lives among the fumes of the alembic." Those alchemists, however, may have more likely derived some of their leading ideas from the mys terious, and at that time wholly unexplainable results observed in already very ancient metallurgical processes; in which, for example, certain stones were transmuted, as it were, into metals widely divergent in character from their ores, and even silver and gold were obtained from the most unlikely-looking mate rials. It is therefore, in any case, not improbable that the Chinese may have preceded western nations in the discovery of metallurgical methods. At all events, it is now evident that the Japanese acquired these arts from China, the former source of all their higher civilization. Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. The aphorism that provided the title of this paper is probably a couple of hundred years old, but it still expresses a fundamental truth in the metals industry. This truth will be illustrated through a brief review of the major developments in the extractive metallurgy of the oxidized ores of nickel - the "laterite" ores. While the details to be discussed are for the most part specific to nickel, a close parallel with other commodities - particularly in recent years - will be apparent even to those whose interest in nickel itself is slight. Thus it is hoped that this paper will be stimulating, at the least, to anyone who is concerned with the implementation of process improvement, "Invention" in the present context means any change from "conventional" process technology that shows a reasonable chance of reducing costs, increasing revenues, or both, in the production of a commodity. This can be anything from a simple rearrangement of flowsheet steps to a completely different basis for processing. And the result may reduce costs by more efficient use of energy or labor or reagents; may increase revenues by better recovery of the primary product or by introducing the recovery of previously ignored by-products; may insure sales volume (and thereby cash flow) through higher product purity or an improved product form. "Necessity" is the perceived need to attain at least one of these classes of results. This perception of necessity, however, varies widely from management to management and from project to project.

In the year 1948, more than ever before, the coal industry established itself on the threshold of a new and exciting future expansion. While production did not equal the wartime and peacetime peaks of 1944 and 1947, it was, in review, a good coal year. During the latter part of the year a combination of mild weather, record stock piling, and general business slackening reduced coal demand to the extent that marginal mines suspended operations, while mines remaining active found it necessary to renew their attention to producing better products at lower operating costs.

Hatch (260) made the following pertinent statement regarding the present status of engineering design of dust-control equipment: Textbooks on ventilation and engineering handbooks devote little or no space to methods of control of industrial dust, and in the technical journals papers on fundamental engineering design of equipment are conspicuous by their absence. In a recent bibliography of the literature on pneumoconiosis less than 1 percent of the articles dealt with the engineering control of the disease. The science of dust control has not developed beyond the stage of trial and error, and the design of structures for the suppression of dust is based almost entirely upon empirical data together with one or two elementary formulas. The latter were derived from the generalized experience in a limited number of Industries such as woodworking, where conditions and requirements are not at all like those, for example, in a sand-pulverizing plant. Wide experience and good judgment are essential to the proper use of the scanty information that has been collected and systematized. Without attempting to minimize the importance of experience in engineering design, it is necessary to point out that most of the past experience obtained in the empirical design of dust-control equipment was not evaluated by means of quantitative studies of the actual reduction in dust , fence, past experience does not necessarily furnish the proper guide for future design. In fact, recent surveys in certain industries, employing modern methods of investigation, have shown that existing equipment is in many cases inadequate.

Mine fires have occurred since the mining of coal was begun, and they are still occurring. The resulting economic waste may become considerable (219),3 especially if a fire is allowed to assume major proportions or to get beyond control temporarily. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to have every action count. To do this effectively, it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment and thereafter what is happening in a remote or inaccessible area. It is equally important to know before¬hand what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. The logical method of combatting a fire demands the cooperation of both mining engineer and chemist. They should decide the course of action to be taken, drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required for proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which they could be carried out, and upon the chemist's knowledge of the results to be expected therefrom.

Two major grounding topics are covered: mine ground systems and ground-check monitors. Performance characteristics of ground-check monitors for high-voltage surface mine distribution cables and low-voltage underground mine trailing cables are evaluated. Over 20 commercially available monitors are studied to determine their utility. Several monitoring concepts are incorporated into an unusual monitor design, the prototype of which is described in detail. A comparative study of the effectiveness of several alternate methods of grounding surface mine equipment supports the system currently proposed by MSHA. An instrument design to measure earth voltage gradients is described, as well as an instrument design for measuring the effectiveness of dc haulage current return systems. An extreme analysis is made of techniques for measuring earth resistivity and resistance of safety ground beds. Electrolytic corrosion studies of earth electrodes are reported extensively also.

E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are being made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin. This report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . Virtually all known metallic -mineral occurrences and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within Fergus County were investigated in 1948. The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings now are caved ; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. SlamaThis session was devoted to the economic aspects of planning and scheduling. After Dr F. H. Deist had introduced the paper Aids to planning production in coal mines, Dr T. V. Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

As real-time air quality monitoring becomes more prevalent in US underground mines, it is important to provide the highest data reliability with the fewest possible sensors. Real-time sensors remain costly, and these costs are not exclusively financial; the time required to install, calibrate, and maintain real-time sensors poses a large barrier to widespread implementation. Current atmospheric monitoring systems typically rely on displaying point-specific values. This requires operators to infer real-time airborne contamination distributions. Monitoring and control software utilizing mine ventilation network (MVN) solvers has been implemented in limited cases because of their ability to simulate ventilation systems quickly, but these solvers use a one-dimensional representation of the mine, limiting spatial resolution of estimated distributions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has likewise been considered as a means to improve spatial resolution, but processing times prevent its use as a basis for monitoring and control. For the real-time monitoring of airborne contamination distributions, we propose a spatial interpolation method that can estimate the distribution of airborne contaminants in near-real time. This method provides a middle ground between fast processing times and increased spatial resolution. With the use of a pathfinding algorithm and optimization through absolute percentage error minimization, this method outperforms spatial interpolation with a Euclidean distance. By providing contamination distribution information to operators, this method and its derivatives stand to outperform current atmospheric monitoring systems.
