Open pit mine management must ensure that sufficient trucks are available and are being used effectively for production, and that operating costs are under continued control and review for improvements. This paper describes methods for estimating truck fleet requirements which have been used effectively at large- and medium-sized open pit mining operations. Applied to commonly available data, multiple regression analyses can indicate when mine plans should be revised toward optimizing the number of trucks required. Prediction of major cost items for budgetary purposes is addressed, along with an example of how readily available production data can be used to reduce costs systematically.

Dust mitigation has long been seen as nothing more than managing a nuisance issue, but the reality is that poor dust management can lead to one or more of the following negative consequences: an increased risk of safety incidents, lost revenue, reduced and possibly even lost licence to operate, regulatory intervention, high staff turnover and/or absenteeism and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues. Dust mitigation and management is not a black art; rather it is a scientifically driven process that can provide an opportunity to increase profits, increase the companyÆs status as an excellent corporate citizen, enhance staff retention and reduce the safety risk profile of the operation.The way to achieve success in dust mitigation and control is to apply the scientific method to each problem that can arise and plague any operation by using current industry best practice. This method of dust problem-solving can be applied to dust issues arising from specific dust sources and locations. The dust sources can include wind impacting on stockpiles, open areas, tailings storage facilities, moving train and truck loads, vehicular traffic on roads, the operation of shovels, front end loaders, draglines and other equipment, as well as ore movement on conveyors.The solutions will come from a combination of deployment of dust collection equipment, dust and moisture monitoring equipment, the appropriate application of water and chemicals, the introduction and maintenance of appropriate barriers and the use of predictive data from local and public weather stations. The paradigm shift required is to view dust mitigation as one aspect of normal operational practice, not a ænice to haveÆ or æunnecessary expenseÆ as most operators currently view it. This attitude is becoming more important as more and more local communities oppose the development of mines. One of the reasons for this local opposition is the inevitable dusty environment that is usually associated with mining.Dust mitigation is not a significant expense if correctly designed and included into the system, either as part of the original design of the operation or as a brownfield installation after the fact. Indeed, there is always a loss of revenue associated with dustiness resulting from ore movement and avoiding this goes a long way to paying for any associated dust mitigating costs.CITATION:Visser, J, 2013. Also data were obtained from U.S. manufacturers and suppliers of equipment which is potentially applicable and available in the U.S. for hydraulic mining. The data have been divided into 24 main categories (see the following page) and have been assembled on two-page data sheets which follow. Wherever possible, drawings or photographs are included immediately after each data sheet.

Many underground mine void spaces are not suitable for human entry due to unprotected roofs, instability or having an unknown safety state (eg if they are many decades old). Investigations of these voids may nevertheless be important for general mine safety, for example to detect propagating collapses or water accumulation, prevent accidental intrusion by new developments or drilling to reassess old spaces for re-mining. Robots are an ideal technology for investigating these spaces, especially flying, rotary-wing robots that can access and map vertical structures and spaces while avoiding rocks, water and mud that have accumulated on void floors. To operate in underground mines, we are developing customised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as well as interactive 3D virtual models of the vehicles and their underground environments for controlling vehicle operation and visualising incrementally gathered survey data. Using a game/simulation engine to provide an interactive interface for UAV operation makes it possible to orchestrate external spatial information and video feeds with in-game cameras for optimal visualisation that is not limited to the position, orientation or field of view of cameras mounted on the UAV. First and third-person points of view with respect to the UAV are provided, together with 2D and 3D gaze tracking to provide effective interfaces for geology and mine engineering experts without the need for specialist UAV piloting skills. Ongoing work is addressing the provision of greater levels of autonomy for these vehicles to support mapping well beyond the line of sight of operators and geological characterisation of rock surfaces using sensors mounted on them, including miniature X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectrometers. A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

During the past year and a half the Western United Corporation of Aurora , Illinois , has been distributing carburetted water ges from its Lockport , Ill . , plant , to an extensive territory , under an initial pressure ranging up to 90 lb.. per sq. in . The most distant distributing point on the system is at Harvard , Ill . , about 35 miles from the plant.. The territory supplied is approximately 85 miles long and 35 miles wide , the total mileage of rains being 1223 , or approximately 24 per cent of all the gas trains in Illinois outside the city of Chicago .

A geological model accounting for uncertainties possesses important advantages for resource estimation. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) employed on multivariate geochemical datasets open up ways to new methodologies for such geological models with ease in comparison to traditional geostatistical methods. This article proposes a two-step MLA with an ensemble implementation to define geological domains and their uncertainties based on geochemical data. The proposed workflow is applied hierarchically on a dataset from a porphyry copper deposit to perform binary classification that can be attributed to alteration domains.

A medida que la extracción del mineral progresa, la necesidad de madera en la construcción de edificios e instalaciones de la mina, también se incrementa. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo señala la importancia de la madera como factor de producción en la industría minera, al tiempo que describe la silvicultura como técnica agronómica de ayuda en dicha manufactura. Revisando los cuadros estadísticos realizados en el Perú durante los años 1949- 1955, muestran que de cada extracción global de minerales (metálicos y carbón), obtenemos el promedio de 0,9 pies cúbicos de madera por tonelada de mineral extraído, con un equivalente de 5 pies tablares por pie cúbico, como factor de conversión. El problema surge cuando al intentar desplazar la venta de madera importada, se agotan las fuentes de desabastecimiento local, generando una crisis de reservas en el mercado libre. En consecuencia, se propone el establecimiento de plantaciones forestales en áreas localizadas y dentro del plazo de 10 a 12 años, las cuales prolongarán la conservación de la madera nacional, mejorarán la calidad de la misma y a su vez disminuirán los precios de venta.

The treatment of concentrates for the recovery of the precious metals imposes many processing and environmental challenges. Hydrometallurgical technology for recovery of values from refractory precious metal materials has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. Historically, conventional pyrometallurgical methods have been used for to recover values from refractory precious metal materials. However, enhanced environmental awareness has worked to constrain typical refractory material processing methods. This hinders and limits the ability of established smelting or roasting technologies to fill the needs of new sources of refractory materials. An alternative is to treat refractory precious metal bearing materials by hydro metallurgical techniques. These methods are considered more environmentally appropriate since they do not produce gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide. Industrially, Sunshine Mining and Refining Company employs hydrometallurgical technology to process refractory precious metal materials. The Sunshine antimony leach uses a mixture of sulfur and caustic under ambient pressure and boiling conditions. The Sunshine oxidation leach uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and a minimal amount of sodium nitrite under relatively mild oxygen pressure and temperature conditions. These conditions result in a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach. Since hydrometallurgical technologies provide industrially proven processing options for many types of refractory precious metal containing materials, their usage should be considered. Ample work has been conducted to prove the effectiveness of Sunshine refractory processing technologies on various materials. This has included platinum group metal materials, refractory gold concentrates, silver materials and indium materials. In some cases, complete process flowsheets have been designed to recover both base and precious metals from these materials and to treat the generated waste streams in environmentally sound manners.

In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

"The effect of the quenching rate on age hardening in an Al-6.0mass%Zn-0.75mass%Mg alloy sheet was investigated. The quenching rates and aging conditions were as follows: water quenching (WQ) or furnace cooling (FC) followed by pre-aging at 20°C,then artificial aging at 120, 160 or 200°Cwere performed. The peak strength of the FC and the WQ are very similarat120°C aging. It is important high strength was obtained even at the extremely slow quenching rate. On the other hand, the strength of the WQ significantly decreased compared to the FCat200°C aging. GP(I) zones were formed during the pre-aging at 20°C even if the cooling rate was very slow like the FC, and were transformed into the GP(II) ones at 70°C or higher and then into the ?’ phase. However, these zones were dissolved by reversion during heating to 200°C. Thus the strength of the WQ decreased. On the other hand, it is considered that an unknown cluster or GP zone with a thermal stability formed during the FC was not dissolved up to 200°C and was transformed into the ?’ phase. Therefore, a higher strength was obtained in the FC for the200°Caging.INTRODUCTIONAl-Zn-Mg alloys are widely available in commercial production because these alloy have lower quench sensitivity and can be produced by air cooling (AC). Heat treatable aluminum alloys are usually produced by water quenching (WQ) to increase their strength because a high cooling rate inhibits the precipitation of the stable phase during cooling and increases supersaturated solute atoms. However, Baba(1967)reported the strength of an Al-6%Zn-1.8%Mg(mass%) alloy without additional elements quenched by very slow cooling (15°C/min) was 96% of that quenched by WQ. Furthermore,the age hardening at room temperature (RT) occurs after annealing at 410°C followed by furnace cooling (FC, 0.5ºC/min or less)in these alloys. Therefore, the process of annealing at 410 to 430°C for 120 min followed by AC, and reheating at 230°C for 240 min, then cooling is recommended in the specifications (Japan Aluminum Association, 2011). Matsuda and Yoshida(1996)also recommended annealing at 300°C for Al-Zn-Mg alloy extruded products to inhibit age hardening at RT by precipitating the solute atoms and decreasing them in the matrix. It has been considered that the higher the content of excess quenched-in vacancy becomes by WQ, the higher aging rate at RT is obtained. Therefore,it is theoretically and commercially important to clarify the reason why the age hardening occurs relatively quickly in almost no excess quenched-in vacancies such as the FC, and why the same strength as the WQ can be obtained in the FC"

The greatest hazard of early mining was from explosions of methane ignited by open lights . With the advent of safety lamps and forced ventilation this hazard was greatly reduced until the application of electricity to modern mining not only multiplied the sources of gas ignition but the accompanying , machines and haulage systems increased the amount of explosive dust , through which a methane explosion is more liable to become a major mine disaster , and thus greatly furthered the need of adequate ventilation to keep down the concentrations of methane . Adequate ventilation is still the best preventive of such explosions . However , even with a well laid out and controlled ventilating system the amount of air passing through entries and rooms is liable to vary within wide limits because of open doors , falls of rock , or other accidental causes . The percentages of methane under normal conditions should therefore be kept so small that they will not be increased to explosive proportions by short interruptions in ventilation . Mine ventilation and methane detection are inseparable safety precautions . The increasing importance of ventilation necessitates more accurato determinations of the methane concentrations throughout the mines . This paper discusses in detail some of the steps in the development of methane detection and specially notes the more accurate detectors now available . One of the earliest means of detecting methane was by a candle . About 1835 , John Buddle , Sr. , a noted mining man of his period , when questioned by a Parliamentary Committee as to the safety of using candles , replied :

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

The Ludwigshafen and Oppau plants are largely independent I. G. factories situated some 23 miles apart on the west bank of the Rhine facing lannheim. The former factory is a general organic chemical works specializing in dyes, dye intermediates, plastics and synthetic rubber,. while the latter is a heavy organic chemical factory producing ammonia, methanol, higher alcohols and their derivatives. Before the war much of the I. G. research and development work was carried out at Ludwigs- hafen; in particular the high pressure research section directed by Dr. Mathias Pier played a very active part in all hydrogenation developments. Apart from the possibility that a full scale hydrogenation or Fischer Tropsch plant had been erected at Ludwigshafen/Oppau during the war, the main objectives of an oil team investigation were: - (a) To obtain from Dr. Pier and his staff an advance general picture of German fuel production processes. (b) To study the fuel developments still in the research and pilot plant stage. (c) To examine any new developments in hydrogen or synthesis gas manufacture. (d) To look for new processes for production of high anti-knock fuel constituents and for new fuel additives. (e) To investigate new chemical syntheses based on raw materials obtainable from oil. The Ludwigshafen and Oppau factories were first visited by the large team listed in Appendix A during the period 25-31st March. The investigation revealed that no large plant for synthetic fuels or lubricants had been operated at this target. All the important members of the Fuel Research Section staff had been evacuated to Heidelberg and information on the work of this department was therefore limited to that contained in seized documents, the greater part of which have still to be examined in detail. Valuable information on synthesis gas production from hydrocarbon gases was obtained as well as interesting data on a num- ber of chemical syntheses. Two members of the above team Holroyd and Faragher accompan- ied by Major Tilley (interrogator) went on to Heidelberg, contacted Dr. Pier and the chief members of his staff on April 1st and obtained from them the hydrogenation information given later in the body of the report. Later, after visiting Leuna, Holroyd, Faragher and Ellis paid a second visit to Heidelberg and to Ludwigshafen/Oppau on 27th-30th May to check a number of details, particularly with respect to hydrogenation costs, and to obtain information on the pressure.conversion of water gas to hydrogen and on the manufacture of Wickel pressure vessels.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

Providing a suitable protective water barrier pillar (PWBP) is common to reduce inundation hazards in underground coal mines. The imperative factors influencing its performance include the water head acting on the pillar, cover depth, pillar width, strength properties, and permeability characteristics. The mechanical failure of such pillar is a stress-controlled phenomenon, whereas the hydraulic failure is a strain-based phenomenon. A finite-difference numerical modeling approach was developed to study the hydro-mechanical coupled behavior of protective water barrier pillars. The mechanical stability was evaluated in terms of the percentage of failed (ZoF) and intact zones. The influence of the strain-controlled weakening on the permeability of the flow medium was studied through the coupling of the mechanical and hydraulic effects. The coupled steady-state model was used to estimate the outflow rate and its hydraulic stability. The adequacy of the protective pillar was also investigated by assessing mechanical stability and capability to resist hydraulic pressure against the maximum expected water head. A seepage rate-based classification system has also been proposed to evaluate the seepage potential and assess the hydraulic stability. The model has been validated for two case studies at the cover depth of 136–189.5 m and the existing pillar width of 16–42 m against the water head of 25–141 m.

This paper discusses prospecting for lode gold and lists the principal lags and. regulations pertaining to locating; lode claims on public lands. It is a preprint of a part of a bulletin being prepared by the United States Bureau o Mines entitled "Equipping, Developing and Operating Small Gold Mines". The increased interest in gold mining manifested during the past few years (1932-1935) bas stimulated prospecting. Many adventurers have taken to the field to search for now gold deposits. A. large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the tope that it might assist these newcomers.

The International Salt Company has long been interested in finding an efficient process for the removal of impurities from rock salt, and particularly from the rock salt produced at the Detroit mine. Methods which have been used previously at the Detroit mine included both hand sorting and differential crushing in a Bradford breaker with rejection of the oversize. Neither of these methods was adequately effective. The development of a new process for removal of impurities from rock salt has been described in the preceding article." Basically, the process consists of exposure of crude rock salt to radiant heating which selectively heats the impure particles. Subsequently the heated particles are removed by adhesion to a heat sensitive-coating on a conveyor belt. This method was found to be effective in improving both the quality and appearance of rock salt by the rejection of the dark, impure particles. The first commercial unit employing the new thermoadhesive method of dry separation of minerals was installed at the Detroit mine of International Salt Company in Detroit, Mich. (Fig. l). This unit was first put into operation in March 1957. The purpose of the Detroit installation was 1) to serve as a pilot plant for evaluating the process on a commercial scale and 2) to produce marketable quantities of rock salt of improved quality and ap- pearance. The design of this plant was based on the results and information obtained from a 1-tph pilot plant at Battelle Memorial Institute. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT Location: The separation plant was installed underground near the crushing and screening plant, for this was the most suitable location from the standpoint of material handling. Furthermore, ample space was availabe at this location. Because the process requires a relatively constant temperature, the uniform year-around temperature of the mine (57°F) gave an added advantage to an underground operation. Feeding: The rock salt is conveyed to a surge bin, from which it is fed to the heating unit by a conveyor. The feed-rate control consists simply of an adjustable gate at the bottom of the surge bin. The plant may be fed either No. 1 grade of rock salt (0.279 to 0.375 in.) or No. 2 grade (0.375 to 0.500 in.) with a maximum input capacity of 500 tons per 15-hour day. Heating Unit: The heating unit (Fig. 2) consists of a panel of infrared lamps suspended inside a low-speed revolving screen. The radiant-heat panel, which is curved for most effective utilization of the heat, holds 240 infrared lamps of standard industrial type, each rated at 500 watts. The position of the panel is adjustable so that it can be placed centrally over and to within 6 in. of the salt bed on the screen. The entire heat panel is suspended by rollers in ¦ R. J. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) was established in the public interest to conclude inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations on mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increaseee efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to "disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act." In accordance with this directive, USBM reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-USBM publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make this kind of list both necessary and valuable. This edition describes reports and articles published during calendar years 1992 and 1993.
