This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

"The Porcupine area is in northern Ontario at the intersection of N. Lat. 48° 30' and 81° W. Long. It is 125 miles due north of the Sudbury nickel range. Practically all the mineral production of this area has come from the townships of Tisdale, Deloro, Whitney, and Ogden, in order of importance. The accompanying map of the Porcupine area and its extensions to the east and west (Fig. 4) has been included to show what I consider to be an essential objective of this paper, a perspective for exploration.The discovery of gold ore in the Porcupine area at such an early date resulted from the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway and exploratory survey lines north into unexplored territory, for the early history of Porcupine is inextricably tied to the exploration along Niven's survey lines and the extension of the railway north from Cobalt to Nellie Lake. The following are the more significant events leading to the discovery of gold in Porcupine.1896-E. M. Burwash, employed by the Ontario Bureau of Mines, examined the country along Niven's base line and noted quartz veins that carried traces of gold. He was attached to Niven's survey party.1899-The late W. A. Parks reported on the geology of the portage route from Mattagami river to Night Hawk lake, for the Ontario Bureau of Mines. He noted the occurrence of gold in quartz veins and reported “I regard the region south of the trail to Porcupine lake as giving promise to the prospector"". He also was attached to Niven's survey party.1901-Charles Camsell, while prospecting for the Algoma Central railway, did some work on a vein occurrence carrying low gold on ground now known to be part of the Hollinger mine (3).1907- Extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to Nellie Lake.1909- Bannerman followed up Indian story about occurrence of coal, and found iron formation. He remained to prospect and found the gold-bearing vein of the Scottish Ontario property."

Considerable process and equipment development and analysis were conducted during design of Freeport Sulfur's laterite nickel facilities in the late 1950's. These covered ore concentration at Moa Bay, Cuba, and concentrate refining at Port Nickel, Louisiana. Both facilities utilized acid pressure leaching and product refining steps that were similar to those later used elsewhere in the laterite processing industry. Unfortunately, developments in Cuba removed the Moa Bay facilities from Freeport control. This deprived the project of a start-up that would have allowed thorough resolution of difficulties and a quicker attainment of production capacity. This meant lost opportunity to positively prove and complete the technology when optimum resources and staff were available. This paper reviews the original rationale of how design was developed via laboratory, bench scale and pilot studies by Freeport Sulfur. Some later operating problems will also be discussed. "These tentative coal mine inspection standards have been prepared as a guide for the Federal inspection of coal mines of the United States. Much time and thought have been spent by various members of the Safety Division in the preparation of thses standards, and it is believed that compliance with them eventually will be possible in most mines. In many instances objections will be raised to them owing to long-established mining customs and practices that are inherently of dubious safety and to a natural inclination to oppose change. In other instances there will be valid objections due to conditions not foreseen at the time these standards were prepared. Or there may be substandard conditions and practices due to original mine layouts that it is not practicable to change during the lifetime of the mine; in such instances it is likely that some effective measures are or can be taken toward lessening hazards.With the rapid change in mining methods some of the standards may become inapplicable and it may be advisable to revise them to meet the new conditions. Therefore, questions regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the supervising engineer of the Coal Mine Inspection Division so that modifications of and additions to these standards may be made from time to time.In many respects these standards exceed the provisions of the various State mining laws, and some may conflict with the laws of some States. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws but to suggest that it may be desirable for the State to reconsider such laws or safety orders.Although an effort has been made to word these standards so that they may be readily understood, nevertheless, a reasonable interpretation should be placed upon them. In fact, in numerous instances the words reasonable"", ""suitable"", and ""properly"" are used in recognition of the fact that reason- and sound judgment enter into the carrying out of the safety endeavor.The policy of the Bureau on some vitally important safety matters in mines is set forth in its published Safety Decisions. These decisions have been consulted and used in the preparation of these standards. These decisions also are now being reexamined by its Mine Safety Board."

THE results to come from the application of cheap oxygen to industry in general will be so great that it is not possible to enumerate them beforehand and still less to estimate them. We naturally think first of the fuel to be saved; yet this is only a minor item. The main results will be changes in methods of manufacture or of operation. The speed of operation will be greatly increased, with consequent savings in labor and fixed charges, and also, in most cases, in the cost of fuel. High temperature will be brought within the reach of every manufacturer, whereas it is now available only to those operating expensive electric furnaces located within reach of large water power. New speeds and new temperatures mean improvements and processes not thought of at present. Incidentally the changes in methods will probably change the location of important world industries, the tendency being to concentrate at the fuel centers. The whole subject is so new that most of the data which an engineer requires for definite estimates do not exist. All that is possible now is to obtain a general view of the subject with rough and fragmentary estimates for some of the industries with which we are specially concerned. Most of the figures presented deal with fuel saving merely because there are available no data from which to estimate the effect on speed of operation. When working out the practical problems involved in substituting oxygen for air, in most cases the change will be made step by step; by trying out air enriched with increasing percentages of oxygen. Such partial applications of oxygen will be temporary expedients during the transition and there will be no stopping place short of the complete substitution of air by oxygen. This final stage is therefore the one discussed in this paper.1

Barrick Gold is in the process of building several new mines and implementing new processes at existing mines for which metallurgical technology is of key importance. The roles of the company's Strategic Technology Solutions team and the Barrick Technology Centre are discussed within the context of their responsibilities within Barrick's Operations Support group. The paper will present an overview of the development of the technology centre from the former Placer Dome Research Centre to its current form supporting strategic technology, capital projects, and operating sites. Novel approaches to research and development will be presented as well as an overview of some of the technologies developed from bench-scale to pilot-scale, and beyond.

The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a partnership program to stimulate innovative research and workplace interventions. In combination with other initiatives, the products of this program are expected to reduce the occurrence of injuries and illnesses at work. Unveiled in 1996, NORA has become a research framework for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the United States. Diverse parties collaborate to identify the most critical issues in workplace safety and health and develop research objectives for addressing those issues. NORA entered its third decade in 2016 with an enhanced structure. The 10 sectors formed for the second decade will continue to prioritize occupational safety and health research by major areas of the U.S. economy. In addition, NORA’s seven cross-sectors will continue to focus on the major health and safety issues affecting the U.S. working population. While NIOSH serves as the steward to move this effort forward, it is truly a national effort. NORA is carried out through councils comprised of members with many diverse interests that are developing and implementing research agendas for the occupational safety and health community over the third decade (2016-2026) of NORA. Councils address objectives through information exchange, partnership building, and enhanced dissemination and implementation of evidenced-based solutions. NORA groups industries into 10 sectors using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. The Mining Sector encompasses NAICS code grouping 21xxxx where “xxxx” represents the different subcodes of the mining “21” classification. Mining encompasses the extraction of solid mineral and mineral-like substances from their place in the Earth’s crust and supplies them to processing industries that produce economically valuable materials. It does not include oil and gas extraction. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA separates mining into coal, underground and surface, and metal and nonmetal, underground and surface.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

A refined ad improved self-sealing brattice for use in coal mine rescue and recovery operations for directing the flow of air has been developed and tested by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The brattice is made from a lightweight, low cost material that meets MSHA flammability requirements. The units can be erected using pins, spade or lightweight extensible poles. Tests here conducted to determine leakage rate from minimal to a maximum of 1.5" H20. The ability to handle reverse flows was demonstrated and a non-flammable foam was used as an auxiliary sealing agent.

AN appraisal of the activities of the mining geologists during 1936 clearly indicates the ever in- creasing utilization of geology in the search for ore. Few men with geo- logic training are idle at present; this is particularly true regarding recent graduates. Many have accepted employment in distant fields, such as the Philippines and South America, and greatly increased mineral production from these places reflects their activities. In North America, regions of intense mineralization formerly important are being restudied in greater de- tail and with better understanding; as a result, new mineral wealth is being found in many such districts. Much is being done by private companies and individuals, and it is to be hoped that mining companies will increasingly make available the purely scientific results of such studies by permitting their geologists to publish. On such generosity to a large extent will future advances in ore finding depend.

The contract objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of available dust-control technology for double-drum shearers. Eight underground surveys were conducted to evaluate drum design, drum spray nozzle locations, ranging-arm sprays, water quantity, wetting agents, and cutting techniques. The final report is made up of eight dust-control technique reports, each discussing, details of the individual mine surveys.

This final report summarizes the effort on a very aggressively scheduled and demanding development program undertaken by Westinghouse for the U.S. Bureau of Mines under Contract No. H0101262. The objective of this program was to produce hardware and test it to determine the efficacy of certain concepts of Coal Mine Rescue and Survival as established by the request for proposal and the study performed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). (These are stated in paragraph 1. 1 for reference.) In carrying out this program, Westinghouse provided specific hardware designs in consonance with the objectives of the concepts outlined in the NAE study final report. Though this contract did not require producing final design hardware ready for introduction to the coal mining community, components of the CMR&SS - as delivered - have some value in disaster situations and are to be kept on standby alert. Additional design and production development is required and should be undertaken on most of the subsystems and components before they can be used in the competitive coal mining community.

The case study assessed submicron aerosols at a continuous miner (CM) section, diesel aerosol concentrations at the longwall (LW) section, and elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC) exposures. Aerosols at CM sections were a mix of freshly generated and those from main drifts. Low ambient concentrations and personal exposures suggest effective control strategies, with further reductions possible by curbing emissions from high-emitting light-duty vehicles.

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment,

In 1973 the percentage of total coal production mined by surface methods in the United States again increased, reflecting a long term trend. Barely three decades ago less than 10 percent of the U.S. coal was produced in this manner. Last year surface coal mines produced 299 million tons, 50.7 percent of our nation's coal. At present there are about 2450 strip mines producing coal in 23 states. While accident rates for surface coal mines are less than underground coal mining rates, surface coal mining is certainly one of the more hazardous occupations. Figure 1 shows the injury rates (fatal and non-fatal accidents) of major U.S. industries. Note that surface coal mining is more hazardous than all other industries except contract construction. Accident rates are about the same as the contract construction industry which uses similar equipment. A limited amount of detailed data was available on elements of surface coal mining jobs and this lack of compiled information made it difficult to assess the significance of the conditions contributing to accidents and to make recommendations that would reduce accident frequency. Therefore as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing research efforts related to the health and safety of the coal miner, a contract was awarded to Theodore Barry and Associates of Los Angeles to conduct an "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Surface Coal Mines."
