The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. In addition, recent developments and practices are presented that make CT a reliable drilling technology to drill cheaper, faster and deeper and to deliver more continuous and reliable data and samples from deep formations.CITATION:Mokaramian, A, Rasouli, V and Cavanough, G, 2012. An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The precise measurement of NO2 was historically difficult in road tunnels, hence criteria and design analysis was based on converting from NOx concentrations via a set NO2:NOx ratio. The reliable direct measurement of NO2 is now possible, however design analysis is still dominated by emissions tables and formulas specified in terms of NOx. For converting from NOx to NO2 in a road tunnel environment in Australia, the ratio has typically been assumed to be ten?per?cent. This has generally been based on the recommendation in PIARC (2000) and on the ‘average’ value cited in PIARC (1995).Determining this ratio is important as changes in engine technology and in-tunnel pollution criteria along with improvements in CO and particulate emissions control, may mean that NO2 will become the driving factor for future ventilation requirements. Correct selection of this ratio can directly impact the ventilation capacity and system design.Recent research has indicated that choosing a constant ratio of ten?per?cent for all tunnels may not be appropriate. The in-tunnel ratio has been estimated to be as much as 20?per?cent to 30?per?cent and depends on the location in the tunnel, the type of ventilation system and the traffic/fleet characteristics. This paper discusses the effect of some of these parameters on the NO2:NOx ratio in road tunnels.The findings indicate that the ten?per?cent upper limit on the NO2:NOx ratio in PIARC (2000) may be a conservative value for design purposes for longitudinally ventilated road tunnels of typical length in Australia. A value of seven?per?cent to eight?per?cent may be more appropriate in some circumstances. However, the value chosen will depend on the specific tunnel in question and the confidence in traffic conditions expected. IT can be truly stated that no branch of the engineering industry has progressed more rapidly in the last few years than that of welding. In spite of depressed economic conditions, this industry has continued to advance along scientific lines, replacing the old hit-and-miss method of welding. The development work is intensive, and increased activity is recorded in every sphere of the industry, new applications of existing methods, together with new processes, being added to those already proved in practice. The general acceptance of the welding processes can be measured by their utilization as a manufacturing tool in the metal-working industries. Many manufacturers have partially or wholly adopted welding. These concerns have on their staffs welding specialists, design engineers, and metallurgists, who are qualified to design and supervise the manufacture of welded parts, at a considerable saving to the purchaser. The steady, consistent, and sound growth of welding is based upon investigation of the fundamentals of the various processes, together with their proper application. The classification of welding processes varies in different countries. In Europe, they are divided into two main classes, namely, heterogenous and autogenous. In the former, the parts are joined, as a ruler without melting the edges, and by using as filler a metal different from that of the object welded. Such welding differs from soldering and brazing in that higher temperatures are required to effect the union of the parts. In autogenous welding, the parts are joined by melting of the edges, with or without the addition of a material similar to the parts being joined.

Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the past 12 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development, of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. AT the Park Utah Mine, labor costs of stoping A have been reduced from 30 to 40 per cent. by the use of double-drum hoists and scrapers. The application of scrapers varies with the methods of timbering. In stopes, which must be timbered with square-sets or stringer sets, one method is used; another is used in wide orebodies that can be held open until filling is introduced; and still another in narrow flat veins. Nearly all the oreshoots at the Park Utah lie at less than 50" from the horizontal, and most of the ore is difficult to handle through flat chutes. Proper care is probably the most important requisite for successful scraping, as serviceable equipment can be obtained from several manufacturers. One capable mechanic, therefore, was put in charge of the scraper hoists. He visits every stope daily, oiling hoists and tail1 blocks, inspects all equipment, splices cables and changes "set-ups" when necessary; his pay has been a good investment. The Park Utah now has in use ten double-drum Turbinair hoists, and one Sullivan double-drum a. c. hoist of the same capacity and outside design as the air hoists. The goal of this 42-month contract was to increase safety in low-seam underground coal mines through development and in-mine evaluation of a temporary roof support system for roof drills and floor-riding operator compartments for a loader and shuttle car. The program was performed in three phases. During Phase I, state-of-the-art canopy technology was investigated, and preliminary design and mock-up evaluations were performed for temporary roof supports for single-and dual-boom bolters and for transverse-mounted floor-riding canopies for a shuttle car and coal loading machine. The shuttle car and loader canopies were approved for further development, and the design, fabrication, testing, and certification were completed in Phase II. In Phase III, the Bureau of Mines furnished an FMC 6L shuttle car fur use in the evaluation of the canopy for 45 shifts. The shuttle car canopy was evaluated at Virginia Crews Coal Company in West Virginia. Efforts to secure an evaluation site for the loader canopy were unsuccessful. The loader canopy was shipped to Bruceton for possible future evaluation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the State of Indiana cooperated with AMAX Coal Co. and its consultants to determine the effects of coal mine overburden blasting on nearby pipelines. Five pressurized 76-m pipeline sections were installed on the Minnehaha Mine highwall near Sullivan, IN, for testing to failure. Four 17-to 51-cm-diameter welded steel pipes and one 22-cm PVC pipe were monitored for vibration, strain, and pressure for a period of 6 months while production blasting advanced up to the test pipeline field. In contrast to previous studies of small-scale, close-in blasting for construction, these tests involved overburden blasts of up to 950 kg per delay in 31-cm blastholes. Analyses found low pipe responses, strains, and calculated stresses from even large blasts. Ground vibrations of 120 to 250 mm/s produced worst case strains that were about 25 pct of the strains resulting from normal pipeline operations and calculated stresses of only about 10 to 18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No pressurization failures or permanent strains occurred even at vibration amplitudes of 600 mm/s.

"The history of extractive metallurgy is replete with examples of commercializing new processing technologies. The successes are widely reported, but failures seldom are. This is unfortunate, for usually we can learn more specifics on how to succeed in technology development by studying and thoroughly understanding their failures. Frequently one encounters a red herring that caused the whole effort to fail. A thorough and objective due diligence up front would have identified those red herrings and prevented the pursuit of a bad idea and the resulting destruction of capital. Due diligent analyzes performed before construction of three such bad ideas will be discussed. One is an EAF dust process, which pursued the red herrings of a poor understanding of the business, a naïve view of past experience, and false confidence in the technology. Another will examine the effort to commercialize a new pressure copper leach process that followed the red herrings of inadequate testing of the raw material, application of processing conditions that were inherently unsafe, and an improper assessment of the inherent advantages of past developments. The last is an alternative iron-making process, where the red herrings were incomplete and superficial assessment of prior pilot plant and demonstration plant tests, an assumption that the commercialization model of “build it and we will make it run” was viable, and a technology whose technical fatal flaws had already been identified. Unfortunately, capital destruction often also closes the window to more intelligent pursuit of technology development. TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATIONThe development and commercialization of new technology is a vital part of keeping industry profitable, able to deal with new sorts of feed stocks and current with economic, product, operational and environmental requirements. This is a difficult task in the best of times, and can be compounded when the developers become enamored of a particularly favorable characteristic of the project or of the product. These “red herrings” divert project focus away from the arduous path to success and, in the end, result in project failure."

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Once completed, this $700-million reservoir facility will receive 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of CSO and flood water via the McCook Main Tunnel, which connects the TARP Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir, and from distribution and Des Plaines inflow tunnels which will bring flow from the Des Plaines Tunnel of TARP."

IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

Introduction The present paper may be considered as a sequel to a paper, A Process for Cleaning Molybdenite .Concentrate, which was presented by the author at the annual meeting of the Institute last year. In that paper, a description was given of the laboratory work leading up to the adoption of a new process for treating complex molybdenite ores of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada. A bare outline of mill performance with the new flow-sheet was included. With this writing, the purpose is to describe the highly interesting work of translating laboratory experience into mill practice, to show what changes were required in design to put the scheme on an operational basis, and to point out the gratifying improvements in mill products which resulted from the new procedure. The process has been placed in operation at the La Corne mine of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada. This mine was operated during the war by Wartime Metals Corporation, and, earlier, by the Molybdenite Reduction Company, which installed a small plant. The property is situated on the highway from Amos to Val d'Or, Quebec. The claims held by the Company are at the boundary between La Corne and Vassan townships.

Iron ore screening plant productivity is strongly affected by the performance of the shuttle operation, with the control system robustness and associated strategies having a direct impact on utilisation and throughput rates. A number of aspects intrinsic to the methods and technologies traditionally applied on the motion control of shuttles are often observed to decrease the efficiency of the ore distribution process across multiple screening modules, which ultimately impacts the plant’s production. Those include the number of operational scenarios that are unmanaged by conventional discrete control logics which may intermittently lead to undesired events, such as ‘high level alarms’ and ‘low level interlocks’ in the screening bins. This outcome usually demands excessive manual intervention by Control Room Operators. A Reinforcement Learning (RL) Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution was deployed to control the motion operation of the scalping and products screening shuttles in an iron ore handling plant. The RL algorithm was trained in advance to handle multiple operational scenarios and generate optimised outputs. In nominal operation, the shuttles are moved in a modulating and highly predictive fashion over the whole range of safely reachable bins. When the need occurs, the AI control agent deviates from that modulation behaviour, limiting its travel range or moving to other groups or clusters of available bins by employing ‘bin jumping’ or ‘ore break’ strategies. The RL platform capabilities include the ability to learn in real time to account for and auto-adapt to new operational patterns and process changes whilst applying improved strategies for shuttle dwelling times, target setting and speed control. The deployed Reinforcement Learning AI solution has better managed the existing challenges associated with the shuttle operation and control, and resulted in a more efficient ore delivery process, superior operations stability and increased production rates.

"The Katie Cu-Au deposit is situated in southeastern British Columbia, 425 km east of Vancouver. The deposit is a member of the alkaline group of porphyry Cu-Au deposits associated with potassically and propylitically altered andesitic volcanic rocks.The Katie porphyry system occurs in mafic to intermediate alkaline volcanic rocks of the Lower Jurassic Elise Formation of the Ross/and Group. Host metavolcanic rocks include andesitic to basaltic flows, flow breccia, massive fine tuff and crystal tuff Gabbroic intrusions alternate with the volcanic rocks in drill core. The lack of chilled margins and shear contacts, as well as their similar composition to the volcanic rocks, suggest that the gabbro was synvolcanic.Alteration exhibits a zonal pattern spatially related to zoned porphyry-style mineralization. Propylitic alteration is common and assemblages consist of epidote, chlorite, sericite and calcite. Potassic alteration zones are accompanied by elevated copper-gold grades and are composed of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, biotite and chlorite. Narrow drillhole intervals of secondary magnetite, generally less than 2 m across, occur above the potassic alteration zones. A thick oxidized cap lies above the mineralized zones, although only local supergene enrichment has been identified. The lack of supergene enrichment is perhaps due to intense near-surface fracturing and leaching from a high energy groundwater environment.Sulphide mineralization consists mainly of pyrite within the propylitic halo, and pyrite and chalcopyrite with trace pyrrhotite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite and molybdenite within the potassic alteration core. Malachite, azurite and traces of chalcocite occur within the oxidized cap.Discovery and exploration techniques have included airborne geophysics, regional stream sediment sampling, prospecting, geological mapping, ground geophysical surveys, soil sampling surveys, and diamond drilling. Two primary targets of porphyry copper-gold mineralization have been identified by exploration. The Main zone strikes northwest, has an apparent true thickness ranging from 70 m to 135 m, and is a minimum of 500 m in length. The 17 zone strikes northwest, has an apparent true thickness of 90 m, and is a minimum of 300 m in length. The two zones are defined by grades that generally exceed 0.2% Cu and 0.25 g/t Au. Both zones are open along strike and to depth."

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

"Mount Isa Mines (MIM) acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry starting in the 1978’s through until the early 2000’s. The ISAPROCESSTM tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and a significant per cent of the world’s copper is refined using this technology. Since development in the late 1980’s more than 20 ISASMELTTM copper and lead smelting furnaces are now installed in countries around the world. Jameson Cell flotation technology developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson is widely used in the Australian coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal and gold industry. The IsaMillTM’s developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies and has been successfully implemented into base metal fine grinding applications around the world. The most recent commercialised innovation is the atmospheric leach Albion ProcessTM with its supersonic HyperSpargeTM gas sparger, is being adopted as a solution to the increasing complexity of orebodies. MIM’s contribution to the industry was significant given the size and the remote location of its operations with Townsville Copper Refineries more than 1350 km and Mount Isa 1800 km from the nearest state capital of Brisbane. This paper will briefly discuss the development of each of these technologies and why MIM – now owned by Glencore - was so successful innovating and developing such technologies over a period of nearly 40 years.INTRODUCTION Mount Isa is located in the Gulf Country region of Queensland about 1800 kilometers North West of Brisbane (see Figure 1). It came into existence because of the world class mineral deposits found in the area. In 1923 the orebody containing lead, zinc and silver was discovered by the miner John Campbell Miles. Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) was founded in 1924 to develop the minerals discovered by Miles, but production did not begin until May 1931. It paid its first dividend in 1947 after 16 years of troubled production. In 1954 the 1100 copper orebody was discovered and with rapidly rising reserves during the 1950’s and 1960’s led to the construction of new concentrators to treat lead/zinc/silver ores in 1966 (#2 concentrator) and copper ore’s in 1973 (#4 concentrator). The difficult nature of the Mount Isa lead-zinc orebodies has meant that the company had always needed to be at the forefront of mining technology. In the 1970’s through to the 1990’s, it became a world leader in developing new mining techniques and processing technologies as a response to declining metal prices and rising costs. Mount Isa has been smelting copper since 1953 and lead since the early 1930’s. Copper Refining at Mount Isa’s fully owned subsidiary of Copper Refineries Proprietary Limited (CRL) had commenced operations in 1959."

Underground infrastructure is often a critical component of transportation and utility schemes. It is characterised by long design lives with limited access for inspection and maintenance. The exposure environment can be difficult to assess since it will often vary substantially between different locations in the same facility and with time during construction and in service. In addition, the specific demands placed upon underground infrastructure are not well covered by the exposure classes and other guidance given within current codes of practice. When problems occur they can be difficult to rectify and involve significant disruption.Given these substantial risks the prudent designer may adopt a systematic ‘durability planning’ approach which:· defines the environment and principal deterioration mechanisms for the various elements and construction materials,· predicts the design life for alternative durability enhancement options, and· recommends associated measures to be adopted during construction and in service.This paper describes the development of durability planning within Halcrow, giving examples of its use from its first implementation on tunnels under the Suez Canal in 1993 to recent projects in the Middle East and Australia. It seeks to demystify the process, identify shortcomings and speculate on its future development within the civil and mining sectors.

This , the twelfth annual report of research and technologic work conducted by the Bureau of Mines on coal and coal products , summarizes the research and tests conducted frah July 1, 1946, to July 1, 1947. The United States Bureau of clines has been conducting Investigations of electrical equipment during a period of more than 25 years in an endeavor to encourage the development of safer electrical equipment for coal mines. In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 2C, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.
