Federal standards for refuge alternatives (RAs) mandate that they not exceed a Steadman apparent temperature (AT) of 95 °F (35 °C) at an assumedmetabolic rate of 325W, a limit that appears to be arbitrary. Occupants in an RA spend most of their time at rest (a metabolic rate less than 325 W), and thermal equilibrium can likely be maintained at an AT > 35 °C. The purpose of this study was to examine the upper limit of sustainable heat stress during 4- and 8-h exposures at rest. Five men underwent five 4-h trials (phase 1: AT range 39 to 49 °C, 90% rh) and five 8-h trials (phase 2: AT range 46 to 56 °C, 90% rh) in a semi-recumbent position. Descriptive statistics for gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), sweat rate, fluid intake, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), and changes in body mass are reported. Mean Tgi for all trials ranged from 36.9 to 37.3 °C, and mean HR for all trials ranged from 61 to 75 bpm. To determine the effects of increased heat exposure, differences in heat strain between 4- and 8-h trials were examined via repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). As AT increased, there were no significant changes in ?Tgi and ?HR from 1 to 4 h in the 4-h and 8-h trials. During the 8-h trials, as AT increased, there was a difference in ?Tgi between 4 and 8 h. In conclusion, there was support for sustainable exposures resulting in no significant increase in physiological strain at an AT greater than 35 °C AT, with a sustainable limit (no increases in Tgi due to increases in AT) below 46 °C AT. Although the participants were not representative of coal miners, the results provide support for sustainable exposures greater than 35 °C AT at an average metabolic rate of 155 W.

Traditionally the mineral and mining engineers have characterized particles by sieving and-settling. Within the last decade, with the advent of the scanning microscope, entirely new experimental and theoretical approachesl-10/have been taken to minutely define the particle surface. This approach depends upon a hypothesis which takes advantage of the recent developments in automatic micro-scopes which can acquire large amounts of information in a short time and the new computational techniques which rapidly reduce the information to meaningful, practical data. Historically sieving and settling are the oldest sizing techniques known. Sieving by square screens, shown on Figure l-A is a common, current practice for sizing particles both in the laboratory and in production. A woven cloth is used which usually has square openings. The size particle that will pass through the opening dependent on a complex relationship of its morphology. As can be seen in Figure l-A, neither the width nor the height of the particle is determined by sieving. From square screens one and only one parameter characterizing the particle size is obtained, that parameter is the radius of the sphere that will just pass through the given sieve opening. A variation of square mesh screen is the slot screens, shown in Figure 1-B. Here another measure more closely associated with the height of the particle is obtained. Once again, one and only one parameter is associated with the particles' shape.

Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores is the process of attaching fine ore particles-less than 150 µm (100 mesh)-to coarser particles. The fines are thus immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap. This is needed to make heaps more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. This article describes liquids and binders used to form agglomerates. Agglomeration techniques and equipment are also described. These include drum and disk agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse-running conveyors. The need for agglomeration The main reason for agglomerating heap leachable ores is to prevent percolation problems in a heap. This is different than pelletizing iron ore. In the latter case, the purpose is to bond very finely ground material into coarser, strong particles. These particles can then withstand the rigors of transportation and the loading forces in a blast furnace. Most percolation problems in heaps are caused by the segregation of coarse and fine particles during heap construction. This segregation creates areas with significantly lower permeability because fines plug the channels between coarse particles. Consequently, the leach solutions are subject to channeling, following the path of least resistance. They percolate downward through the coarse ore areas and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines. This results in lower extraction, longer leach time, and higher reagent consumption. Permeability problems in heap leaching are compounded because of the vertical migration of fine particles after the heap has been built. These fines eventually accumulate in pockets or layers and impede uniform solution flow. The fines move because they are not attached to a coarser particle. Moreover, the sluicing action of leach solution flowing over the surface of particles may break the bond between fine and coarse particles. Some fines are also created by the decomposition of ores after being wetted. Percolation problems are minimized if the fines can be attached to the coarser particles. Fines are thus uniformly distributed and rendered immobile within the heap. Heinen (1979) conducted comparative tests of nonagglomerated and agglomerated gold and silver ores. He showed that percolation rates through agglomerated material usually are improved by 10 to 100 times. This reduces leach time for economic recovery to less than one-third of that for nonagglomerated material, and total recovery may be increased. Cyanide consumption is also reduced in most cases because of the shortened leach time. Even run of mine (ROM) ore should be agglomerated. This can be achieved with moderate success by passing each truckload of ore under a water spray to bring total moisture of the ore up to about 8% to 10%. The ROM ore will mix when the ore is dumped, when it cascades down the slope of a heap, or when it is pushed up with a dozer. Overall, agglomeration allows low-cost heap leaching technology be applied to gold and silver ores and tailings that could not be economically processed by conventional methods, according to Phariss (1982). How agglomeration works Agglomeration means that the clays and fine particles contained in the ore adhere to the coarser particles. This creates a coating of fines around the coarse particles. When the ore has few fines and the percolation problems are not severe, the addition of a liquid may be all that is necessary to make the few fines adhere to coarser particles. However, when the quantity of fines is substantial, e.g., +10% -75 µm (-200 mesh), a binding agent may be needed. The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

A limestone mine in Ohio has had roof instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This paper describes a collaborative study of these events undertaken by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the mine owners. The study focuses on the roles that weak, moisture-sensitive floor and weak bands in pillars play in a general instability that led to roof falls at this mine. The NIOSH Stone Mine Pillar Design software (S-Pillar) does not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommends that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. It is important to recognize that without the impact of the floor or weak bands, the calculated inherent stability factor for these pillars is within the recommended design range. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to help determine the failure mechanism. Roof-to-floor convergence monitors were also installed in the areas predicted to have further instability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface. This recent case demonstrates that weak floor can be a significant factor in pillar stability and should be assessed during the design stage of the mine.

INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue?Geology of the Moon and asteroids — Why do we want to mine there?Space enterprises are actively working toward establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2.Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral-rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind."

"This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

"Una de las enfermedades más extendidas en la industria minera es la pérdida de audición inducida por el ruido. La exposición de los mineros a niveles de ruido superiores a los niveles de exposición permisibles resulta en la pérdida de audición de aproximadamente el 80% de los mineros del carbón a la edad de jubilarse. En este contexto, el Instituto Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH, por sus siglas en inglés) está realizando investigaciones para desarrollar controles de ruido aplicados a los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos. Este método de minado es usado para extraer la mitad de la producción nacional de carbón subterránea. A partir de las mediciones en campo, se determinó en investigaciones anteriores que los componentes dominantes que generan sonido en el cizallador de un sistema de tajeos largos son los dos tambores de corte utilizados para extraer el carbón. Debido a las dimensiones y complejidad de los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos, el proyecto NIOSH desarrolló un modelo de elementos finitos validado del tambor de corte para utilizarlo en la predicción del sonido generado por este debido a las fuerzas de excitación experimentadas en las operaciones subterráneas. Este mismo modelo se utilizará para desarrollar controles de ingeniería para el ruido del tambor. Las fuerzas de excitación surgen de la interacción de la broca de corte y el carbón, y se transmiten al tambor de corte a través de los sujetadores de brocas. Debido a las condiciones adversas en el frente y la falta de instrumentación aprobada para uso subterráneo, las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón no han sido evaluadas anteriormente. Para este fin, NIOSH, en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Michigan, desarrolló una broca instrumentada autónoma con seguridad intrínseca para medir estas fuerzas. Este artículo describe el desarrollo de la broca instrumentada y la medición de las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón en tres minas. Las mediciones revelaron que las fuerzas tienen un espectro plano, algo característico de la naturaleza del impacto de estas fuerzas, hasta alrededor de 100 Hz. "INTRODUCTION Of all the natural resources being taxed by the needs of the modern world, perhaps the most important is the continually expanding demand for water resources. As water becomes scarcer, and increasingly important, new technologies are needed to find innovative ways to preserve this precious resource. In Chile, for example, the mining industry is investing billions of dollars to build desalination plants and pipelines; bringing ocean water as far as 200 kilometers inland to meet their demand and maintain operations. It is a full-blown crisis for that nation and a top priority for their government and economy. It has been reported that world water consumption will increase by 40 percent in the next 10 years, representing nearly exponential growth. In the U.S., as more and more communities continue to be built, more drain on the current water infrastructure is created. For 25 percent of people and operations that rely on water from aquifers, this source is being consumed at a rate that will create significant problems meeting the demand in as few as two generations.1 A PROACTIVE APPROACH When it comes to controlling dust at your operation, whether a landfill, a transfer station, a haul road or another ancillary area, what are the options? We know watering is not the answer, but at the same time, we need to prevent dust from flying to ensure a safe environment and keep our skies clear of pollution, for both regulatory requirements and neighbors. Creating a Dust Mitigation Program instead of looking to buy the first dust control product off the shelf is a first step to conserve water and, at the same time, maintain the operational demands and environmental standards for a given site. The program concept is straightforward enough. However, the process of effectively constructing and executing a program is quite involved. When undertaking a program, each manager needs to work with their team and their partners/vendors in analyzing the following elements: 1. Site Expectations—It is important to understand how to balance your internal standards with your regulatory requirements, as well as how to keep your neighbors satisfied. 2. Site Aggregate—Variations in native soil, such as clay content or gravel levels, greatly affect the approach that will yield the highest results. 3. Climate—Relative humidity and seasonal variations are critical to achieving predictable results through product choice, application frequency and timing. 4. Daily Traffic—The type and frequency of traffic is an essential variable for site management. 5. Environmental Responsibilities—If you have additional, specifically defined responsibilities, the approach to your site may vary. 6. Budget—While efficiency is the goal of any program, some sites will have more stringent restrictions than others. 7. Current Usage Rates—Document and understand where you’re starting from, both with water, supporting products, and maintenance so that effective measurement of results is possible."

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their coal. Sulfur was the major concern, with BTU and sodium limiting the market for some. The Clean Air Act has extended the PRB market into plants converting from other coals. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents affecting boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to control cost more stringently than ever. Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

The Pawtucket Tunnel is a 2.2-mi, 30.2-ft diameter CSO storage tunnel in Rhode Island. The primary tunnel is built using a dual-mode open-EPB TBM capable of sealing the face within 120 seconds to manage poor ground and water ingress which is launched from within a SEM starter tunnel. The main tunnel connects to four adits along its alignment, three of which are SEM tunnels and one being a MTBM tunnel. This contribution describes the selection process, potential risks, and requirements for the TBM, as well as the design of the main tunnel, the adits, and the adit-bored tunnel connections.

A cost analysis for two alternative contour mining methods is performed to compare their results. The methods evaluated are: 1) Front-End Loader/Truck Haulback and 2) Scraper Haulback. Before performing these analyses, output requirements and equipment needs are found based on integrating geometric limitations with material properties. All calculations are kept practical, with assumptions clearly stated. The cost analysis is a unique, easily utilized compilation of several different approaches incorporating cost engineering principles. The strengths of each are welded into a cohesive entity once again aimed at practical application. The results are presented in tabular form.
