The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million short tons) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States', which is 40.6 percent of the world's production2. The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in Figure 1 and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: Million Million Short Tonnes Tons Florida and North Carolina 36.9 40.7 Western States 5.3 5.8 Tennessee 2.1 2.3 All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are sedimentary marine in origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky and Virginia are but a few of the states in which phosphate is thought or known to

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. About nine years ago the President's Materials Policy Co commission under the chairmanship of William Paley released its report entitled "Resources for Freedom." Not long ago the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources under the chairmanship of Senator Kerr released a study entitled Water Supply and Demand. Both reports contained projections of future water user the report for 1975, and the Select Committee print for 1980 and 2000, It is my task to compare the two reports. In the initial letter from Mr. Kazmann arranging for thus session he suggested that I present "a critical evaluation of the Paley Report's section on water ?ten years later,? which might include a comparison of predicted and actual water-use rates and would spotlight the assumptions which lead to errors in the predictions , . ." It is possible to compare the results of both studies, and it possible to explain art of the differences that can be found between them. The remainder must remain shrouded in doubt, since the Paley Report did not give all details of the methods used in estimating the com¬ponents of water use.

The Missouri University of Science and Technology?s (Missouri S&T) Experimental Mine is a teaching and research facility which has been excavated in limestone by mining engineering students over almost 100 years. The mine is currently being extended to a second level. Available fans for ventilation are two surface fans of 24 kW and two underground booster fans of 12 kW. The design of a ventilation network in conjunction with multi surface fans and booster fans entails a complex procedure. Ventsim Visual software modeling has been used for network analysis to determine the optimum surface and booster fans locations, blade settings, and speeds. Both natural and mechanical induced ventilation pressures have been taken into account. Three working faces on each level have been designated as target points that minimum air quantities are required. The model has been calibrated against a pressure and quantity survey. Design of ductwork, door/stopping positions and different fans characteristics have been examined. The optimum flow rate at identified working faces, efficiency and minimum energy losses and annual network power cost determine the best scenario. The optimum design has been determined for the ventilation network for the next 100 years. The optimum flow rate across working faces is the key criterion selected.

Heretofore, underground coal mines in Alabama have operated under only 60 to 360 meters of cover: however, new mines (at least 5 in the early opening or development stages) will be operating under cover ranging from 600 to 660 meters. With increased rock confining pressures, roof stability problems will become more critical. Initial studies in two 7 ½ -minute quadrangle areas in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama indicate that the orientation of certain lineament and fracture-trace modes mapped from ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery correlate closely with the strike of joint and fault modes. High altitude (118,000 m) U-2 aircraft data were used to support these findings. In addition, over 50 percent of the normal faults mapped in the study area could be directly correlated with ERTS and U-2 lineaments and fracture traces. These correlations provide clues to the structural development of the Warrior coal basin and may, in turn, be used as a guide to the prediction of roof-stability conditions in advance of mining.

Since the advent of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for treatment of uranium-bearing ores in the 1950?s to current carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing of gold values, metallurgies and operators alike have wrestled with the problem of interstage screening. Early gold CIP plants such as at Homestake utilized externally mounted vibrating screens in conjunction with air lifts to effect carbon-pulp disengagement. Other operations world-wide have likewise adopted this technique with varying degrees of success. The problem of predicting the liberation spectra produced by a closed continuous grinding circuit is of fundamental importance for the design, optimization and control of most operations in an ore dressing plant. The only known approach through which such a calculation can be performed is the population balance model equation. The latest and certainly most significant progress made in this area is the solution proposed by King (1990), which requires one textural parameter that can be measured directly from the ore being studied. The main advantage of King's solution is that it does not require the estimation of hundreds of arbitrary parameters that cannot be independently measured, as required by the existing conventional solutions. However, King's solution relies heavily on a knowledge of the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Milm diagram (Andrews and Mika, 1975). This has never been measured for any ore. The characterization of the internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram requires the measurement of the liberation spectra at several progeny sizes produced by the breakage of monosize, monograde particles at several different grades. In this paper, a procedure based on magnetic fluid fractionation for generating seven narrow-size, narrow-grade samples is presented. Each of these samples was then broken into six progeny size classes in an ultrasonic mill. The one-dimensional liberation spectra of each of the 42 progeny and seven parent particle samples were then measured by image analysis. The measured linear-grade distributions are presented in this paper. The calculation of the correspondent volumetric-grade distributions is discussed.

Two 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in.) diameter raises, concrete-lined to 5.49 m (18 ft) inside diameter, were completed in 1978 at the Monterey Coal Company Number One Mine near Carlinville, Illinois, by Frontier-Kemper Constructors. These two raises are the largest in cross-section yet completed by full-face upreaming, and the success of this project is expected to increase the application of raise-boring to coal mine shaft construction. WHY 6.17 M (20 FT) DIAMETER ? Raise boring is well accepted in the metal mining industry for a variety of applications, and is gaining in acceptance in the civil works construction industry. The use of raise boring to construct vertical openings for coal mines has not been as widely accepted, even though coal mining requires, per mine, the greatest number of openings to the surface of any underground activity. Several factors have influenced the low utilization of raise boring in coal mining: 1. Coal mine shafts must often be of large diameter to pass the required high volumes of ventilation air at acceptably low water gage pressures. Cross-sectional areas of finished shafts exceeding 23.23 sq m (250 sq ft) are common. 2. The life of ventilation shafts is comparatively long, and the typical sedimentary strata overlying coal seams normally require that the shafts be lined. Shafts on the intake ventilation circuit must have permanent water-tight linings. 3. Unconsolidated overburden at the surface is often thick, and as reaming cannot be safely utilized in unconsolidated material,

Barite and bentonite are the two principal components of drilling fluid systems used in the petroleum industry for oil and gas well drilling with rotary-type rigs. Approximately 87 percent of the world's annual production of barite is used in drilling applications. Of the worldwide production of bentonite, an estimated 30 percent is used. The drilling fluid, or drilling mud, to which barite and bentonite are added, performs five distinct functions: Lubrication-The liquid phase of the drilling mud lubricates the drill bit, preventing premature failure of the cutting edges and bearings. it also helps to soften the formation being drilled. Cuttings Removal-A mud system must be able to carry rock cuttings broken loose by the bit up to the surface where they can be removed by mechanical or chemical methods. The fluid's ability to perform this function depends upon maintaining a proper balance between the rate of circulation of the fluid and the colloidal properties required to entrain the cuttings in the mud to prevent their settling to the bottom of the hole. Hole Stability-The pressure exerted by the mud against the wall of the bore hole prevents the collapse of the uncased portions of the hole. Downhole Information-The fluid characteristics of the mud should be such that good cuttings samples, cores and electric logs may be obtained to help evaluate a well's productive zones and potential. Control Oil, Gas and Water Flows-It is essential that a drilling fluid offset any pressure from naturally occurring formation fluids in order to prevent a potentially wasteful and dangerous blowout.

Two plate load tests of 1 m2 area were per- formed in a pressure tunnel at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Hydro Project. Reaction for the 250 tons loading in this 10.5 meter diameter tunnel was provided by deeply anchored, diverging rock bolts, eight per load frame. Pressure build up to 2.5 MPa was provided by circular flatjacks. Rock deformation was recorded at depths of approximately 0.3, 0.9, 1.2, 1.8 and 3.3 meters using axially located multiple position borehole extensometers. The tests were performed in representative units of massive shale and thin to medium bedded siltstone. Stress was built up in four equal steps to 2.5 MPa, held constant for one week for creep monitoring, then unloaded, reloaded and unloaded over a period of one day. The most deformable unit was the massive shale which exhibited 1.3 mm of permanent deformation at the surface after the first loading and unloading cycle, which included 0.36 mm of creep. After the second loading-unloading cycle, the permanent deformation had increased to 2.6 mm, following a maximum deformation at the surface of approximately 3.6 mm. At the maximum stress of 2.5 MPa, the tangent modulus averaged 0.4 GPa when loading, and 0.3 GPa when unloading. The thin to medium bedded siltstone exhibited only 0.17 mm of permanent deformation at the surface after the first loading-unloading cycle, which included only 0.05 mm of creep. After the second loading-unloading cycle, the permanent deformation had increased to 0.27 mm, following a maximum deformation at the surface of approximately 0.53 mm. At the maximum stress of 2.5 MPa, the tangent modulus averaged 6.2 GPa when loading and 21.9 GPa when unloading.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value .are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A) A relatively large size sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B) When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves.

Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. The importance of artificial fracturing and well stimulating to solution injection and recovery is made with regard to project development. Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

Production began in the Deep 1 zone of Goldex mine in 2017 at a depth of 1,200 m. Stope dimensions are 50 m high by 22 m wide (along strike) and the panel thickness varies between 22 to 35 m. The Deep 1 orebody is 350 m high by 400 m along strike and 200 m from hanging wall to footwall. The mining method is longhole with paste backfill with a three dimensional primary/secondary sequence advancing upwards in a typical chevron approach and retreating from hanging wall to footwall in a V-shape from a central panel. Mining at a depth of 1,200 m in massive granodiorite brings challenges related to seismicity.

A pilot-plant flotation concentrate containing 21.6 g/t gold and 2 kg/t silver was used for this study. Base-line cyanide and thiourea tests showed 30-40% extraction of both gold and silver. After roasting (450-750C), the maximum gold extracted was 89% with thiourea and 76% with cyanide. Pressure oxidation tests were conducted following a statistical experimental design in a 2L laboratory autoclave at 10% pulp density, and the residues were subsequently leached in acidic thiourea solutions for 2h. Leach results were presented in the form of contour maps, and optimum autoclave conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction (93%). However, silver extraction was only 7% when gold extraction was maximized.

Investigations of bedrock within subsided areas over abandoned coal mines reveal) very little disturbance of the bedrock. In areas that have surface subsidence of .3 to 1 m (1.0 to 3.25 ft), examination of cores from exploration drilling and investigations of the boreholes by means of closed circuit television have shown that fractures are spaced at least .9 to 3.6 m (3 to 12 ft) apart and are located within a zone 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above the collapsed area in coal mines 42.6 to 112.7 m (140 to 370 ft) deep. The dip of the fractures ranges from 25 to 60 degrees, cutting across nearly horizontal sedimentary bedding planes. Typical core recovery is 80 to 95 percent within the subsided areas and 100 percent outside the subsided areas.

Conventional tailings slurry contains a significant amount of water, and water management is key to ensuring the stability of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Simply reducing the water content in the slurry before discharging it from the mill could be an effective way to improve TSF water management. This study investigated the potential for using an environmentally friendly polymer as a new drag reduction agent (DRA) to reduce frictional pressure loss and also conserve water. It entailed conducting pipe loop tests to assess the polymer’s effect on pressure loss in tailings flow and then applying the test results to validate a numerical model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model was also used to determine the polymer’s optimal concentrations at given solid concentrations and flow rates, its effect on energy efficiency for tailings transportation, and its potential for saving water. A case study for a mid-sized, hard-rock mine with a throughput of 50,000 t/day found that the solid concentration could be increased from 30 to 45% with no pressure loss by applying 1996 m3 of the polymer per day. Adding the polymer also resulted in water savings of 57,552 m3/day. The results of this study demonstrated the potential for using the new DRA not only to improve TSF stability but also to save water.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."
