In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

The Hemlo Gold District, located on the north shore of Lake Superior, was discovered in 1981 and will become one of the largest gold mining camps in Canada. Three major Canadian mining companies are presently developing large orebodies and are scheduled to commence production at various times through 1985 and 1986. This paper describes the types of shaft sinking equipment and technology being used by contractors in constructing the required shafts to depths below 1000 metres. The principal shaft design criteria, types of shaft sinking machinery and relevant manpower allocations are discussed.

Traditional methods of project procurement of have remained virtually unchanged in the U.S. infrastructure construction industry for more than 50 years. The traditional method, Design-Bid-Build (DBB), uses a two-step process that separates planning and design from construction. Design is generally done by the public agency and their consultants and the subsequent construction contract is procured from the private sector, almost always by a “low-bid” approach. This method has worked well for many projects, delivering quality work for the lowest bid price. This is particularly true for those projects where the work, and the public agency’s management procedures, are well understood by the contracting community and there is relatively low uncertainty in the work or conditions, particularly geotechnical conditions for underground construction. However, concerns exist with the DBB process. It is time consuming because all planning and design work must be completed prior to beginning any construction work and it is of concern for complex or large projects, plus those with significant risk, where the separation of design and construction, in conjunction with pressures resulting from the low-bid environment, often result in substantial cost and schedule increases. Frequently, these increases occur in a non-productive, inefficient, adversarial work environment leading to claims, disputes and costly litigation (Quick 2002).

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, a rugged, portable direct tensile test system was developed for measuring shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines. During the development of this test system, more than 185 direct tensile tests were conducted with a common, commercially available macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced shotcrete that was applied to concrete test panels using a dry mix process and machinery. The average bond strength of the shotcrete to the concrete substrate typically increased as a function of the shotcrete’s curing age, ranging from 0.44 MPa (64 psi) after one day of curing to 1.58 MPa (229 psi) after 90 days of curing. Adhesion strength increased markedly between one and three days of curing, reflecting a similar trend of increasing shotcrete tensile strength with curing time. This robust direct tensile test system can improve mine safety by providing a reliable means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength and also supplying important information about the quality of the applied shotcrete and the competency of the underlying rock.

The proliferations of media sources and non-profits organizations in Ghana have put the negative impacts of mining on the ?spot?; this has resulted in public outcry about mining. Although, the gold mining industry has responded by implementing several voluntary measures to ensure sustainable mineral development, these critics label such measures as ?green wash?. In this study, a content analysis of newspaper articles of the Ghana Web Database was carried out after the collection of a total of approximately 900 newspaper articles from it. The data were statistically analyzed to chronologically examine the main media view points and the changing perception of mining issues as reported by private and public media. The results showed government, mining industry (Gold), illegal miners and non-profit & community groups as the main media view points and total of twenty-eight related gold mining sustainability issues. The findings of this study could be used by the gold mining companies to improve upon the communications of their unknown sustainable mineral development measures and to design effective communications and education programs for the public.

A rigorous horizontal drilling and chemical grouting program was specified beneath the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101) section of Los Angeles Metrorail Contract C-311.Twin 6.67-m (22-ft.) diameter starter tunnels were to be conventionally mined through amixed alluvial and bedrock face consisting of silty sand, gravel, and weathered sandstone and siltstone of the Topanga Group. The contact between the alluvium and bedrock dipped toward the Crossover Excavation where the horizontal drilling and grouting operations were performed. The intent of this grouting program was to stabilize the mixed face to minimize ground loss and surface settlement, and to reduce groundwater inflow into the tunnel headings. Given the highly variable mixed face conditions, horizontal drilling up to 86 m (284 ft.) resulted in upward trending trajectories which likely followed the bedrock contact. Chemical grouting was performed in a primary, secondary and tertiary, three dimensional sequence. Evaluation of the primary and secondary grouting parameters indicated where tertiary grouting was required. Grouting pressures induced a small rock failure at the tunnel heading as well as increased stresses on the tiebacks of the excavation.

Slope stability in Barrick’s Pierina Mine open pit is significantly influenced by the structural geology, the variably argillized rock mass, and locally by perched groundwater. Development of an extensive surface water diversion network continues at Pierina, which is necessary to minimize highwall and adjacent natural landslide movement and erosion during the wet season. Slope movements are effectively monitored using optical survey methods, strobe light extensometers, gap monitors, and piezometers. The slope stability program at Pierina is focused on improving the understanding of the stability mechanisms in order to ensure continuous safe operating conditions. Priorities are placed on developing an accurate detailed engineering geological model, enhancing groundwater depressurization, and optimizing highwall controlled blasting procedures.

Diesel-powered equipment is widely used in the underground mining industry and their popularity results from properties including efficiency, versatility, reliability, and durability. In the U.S. approximately 7,700 diesel engines were used in 177 underground metal and nonmetal mines as of 2005 [MSHA 2005], and these numbers have likely increased since that time. Diesel engines have been shown to be a major contributor to submicron carbonaceous, respirable, and total particulate mass in the air of underground metal mines [Zielinska et al. 2002, McDonald et al. 2003], and their extensive use results in approximately 13,000 underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) miners (MSHA 2005) in the U.S. being potentially exposed to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel engines (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006). Exposure to diesel exhaust has been linked to adverse health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases (Attfield et al. 2012, Silverman et al. 2012), and in 2012 diesel exhaust was categorized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 human carcinogen (IARC 2012). Exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) is especially concerning for underground miners since underground mine environments have been shown to have some of the highest levels of diesel exhaust in the U.S. (EPA 2002, MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, Pronk et al. 2009). Due to the potential for elevated DPM concentrations in mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule to limit exposures of metal/ nonmetal underground miners to DPM to an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 160 μg/m3 total carbon (TC) (MSHA 2001, MSHA 2006, MSHA 2008). Since this rule went into effect, DPM exposures have been reduced, but are still elevated when compared to other occupations (Pronk et al. 2009, Noll et al. 2015). MSHA compliance data between 2005 to the present show that underground blasters represent 21% of all DPM overexposures in M/NM mines and are one of the highest exposed professions in mining often resulting from low ventilation in the area where blasters are working. Because mines have difficulty controlling DPM in these low ventilation areas, additional control technologies may be needed to reduce exposures. Administrative controls, where miners work on off schedules or upstream of diesel vehicles to avoid the exposures to DPM (Noll et al. 2015) is one possibility, but these types of solutions are not always feasible or practical. A canopy air curtain is another potential control technology to help reduce exposures of blasters to DPM. Listak and Beck (2012) showed that this control technology reduced respirable dust concentration under a roof bolter’s canopy by 67%–75% and recommended air velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. Additional work showed that a canopy air curtain could be designed for a shuttle car, and some initial testing by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) showed reductions of respirable mine dust between 66% to 70%. As seen in Figure 1, the canopy air curtain delivers clean air over the operator’s breathing zone. A fan draws in air through a filter to capture the dust and then supplies clean air beneath the canopy where a miner is working. The use of the canopy air curtain to reduce exposures to diesel particulate matter was first discussed by Noll et al. (2020). In this study the diesel canopy air curtain (DCAC) reduced the DPM concentrations under the canopy by up to 90%. For this research the DCAC was designed to attach to the basket cover of an ammonium nitrate fuel oil ( ANFO) loader (Figure 2) and provide clean air blowing over the miners as they work in the basket. The initial tests used clean air drawn from the mine’s intake and did not try to filter the DPM from the air. Filtering DPM has extra challenges when compared to filtering mine dust particles. The particles of DPM are smaller (submicron and nanometer) than dust particles (greater than 1 micron); therefore, the filtration system must be adjusted to capture submicron particles. A MERV 13 filter was used in previous canopy air curtain research on mine dust control, but this filter is only designed to capture 50%–75% of submicron particles, and this capture efficiency is too low for removing DPM, so a higher efficiency filter is needed. Higher efficiency filters increase the pressure across the filter media which results in decreased airflow or leaks around the filter and reduces the effectiveness of the control for protecting miners from DPM. The optimal filter needs to capture DPM particles at a high efficiency while still allowing the needed airflows to prevent contaminated air from entering the miner’s breathing zone. Listak and Beck (2012) recommended velocities greater than 0.5 m/s for dust reductions of greater than 50%. However, airflows too high have been shown to reduce miners’ thermal comfort; Roghanchi et al. (2016) suggest the optimal velocity for thermal comfort is between 1–2 m/s. Thus, airflow over the miner should be limited to the range of 0.5 to 2.0 m/s. This current study presents the results from research evaluating the reduction of DPM concentrations, under the DCAC, when using a higher efficiency filter (MERV 16) to remove DPM from the DCAC airstream.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) analyses of sediment samples from coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states and the heavy mineral deposits of Chavara, South India, show large lateral differences in the titanium content in ilmenite due to varying degrees of iron leaching. As the depositional environments for the sands with varying degrees of ilmenite alteration are comparable, the cause for the different degree of alteration is due to differences in the primary source of the ilmenite or to differences in the geochemical history of the ilmenite grains during transport from source to deposit. The CCSEM analyses of the heavy mineral fractions show that source of sediments with a high content of titanium-enriched ilmenites, mainly the heavy mineral deposit around Chavara, resides in the khondalite belt of South India (granulite facies metasediments). The less titanium-enriched ilmenites are sourced from other rocks in the area such as the charnokites. Those conclusions are based on the high MgO content in the leached ilmenites, chemical composition of the accompanying garnets (low CaO and high MgO), and the concentration of aluminum-rich minerals in the sands.

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. INTRODUCTION Prior to excavation in soil and rock, it is useful to know the subsurface structure. This is important information both for safety and for equipment scheduling reasons. It is useful to know whether parts of the subsurface might be potentially troublesome or of different character than is generally thought present. By using geophysical probing, it is possible to infer the location and size of these unusual regions. The ground structure is commonly estimated from core samples taken from boreholes. These cores give a detailed knowledge of the structure in the borehole. However, knowledge of the structure exterior to the borehole can only be extrapolated from core data. By using seismic and electromagnetic cross-borehole geophysical probing, remote probing can be used to sense the region exterior to boreholes. A recent advance has significantly improved the state-of-the-art for defining the ground structure between boreholes. This new procedure utilizes large amounts of data and provides a detailed picture of the subsurface. The data processing algorithms used are similar to those in medical imaging of the human body using x-rays, a science called x-ray tomography. This imaging of the ground is called geotomography, which is a shortened acronym for geophysical tomography. Several examples of geotomography applied to imaging ground structure are presented. Our approach has been to probe the ground with electromagnetic and seismic waves. We map the region of interest with signals transmitted between multiple source and receiver pairs lowered in boreholes on opposite sides of the region (Figure 1). Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.
