San Antonio has experienced sustained growth for decades, putting increased pressure on existing wastewater infrastructure. In June 2013, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) reached a Consent Decree agreement that requires significant improvements to the wastewater system over a 10-year period to reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows. One of the critical projects was the W-6 Upper Segment Tunnel project to reduce sanitary sewer overflows on an existing sewer main running through Lackland Airforce Base. The replacement project consisted of a new tunnel nearly 29,000 LF of primarily 104" FRP. The project also includes nine shafts and multiple trenchless crossings to make near surface connections to the new works.

Montana Tech is located in the historic mining town of Butte, MT and is adjacent to the Orphan Boy mine. This abandoned underground mine will be the heat source for a down-hole heat exchanger (DHE)/heat pump system. The mine was abandoned in the 1950?s and has since filled with water to within approximately 30 m of the surface. The shaft is composed of a 245 m vertical shaft connected with horizontal crosscut drifts at 60 m and 150 m below the water level that connect to a large stope with approximately 1250 million liters of water at a consistent 75-78°F temperature. The intent is to build this heating system to augment or fully heat a newly built 2,000 m2 building on the Montana Tech campus. As designed the system uses ?off-the-shelf? parts making the basic configuration straightforward with the exception of the DHE?s which need to be placed into the vertical shaft. Because there is little or no examples of placing the heat exchangers in a vertical shaft, the primary focus of this work was to model the heat exchanger placement and configuration in the vertical shaft such that thermal currents develop between the stope and vertical shaft in, via the horizontal crosscut drifts, in order to move the water and thereby provide the required energy. This study includes the modeling of water flow, temperature profiles, and the heat contribution from the surrounding rock walls.

The decline in coal production has been slowed somewhat in recent years, mostly because of the industry's own remarkable success in holding the line on costs, and partly as a result of advances achieved through industry and government research. Nevertheless, the decline has continued. This downward trend combined with the increased productivity of labor through mechanization that has been necessary for coal to retain even its present competitive position, has resulted in a serious reduction in the number of miners required and large scale economic dislocations in mining communities. For coal to regain a more favorable position it must either expand existing markets by reducing the cost of the delivered product and thereby compete more effectively with other fuels or develop new uses that will require large tonnages of coal. New markets involving several million tons, which would look extremely attractive to most other United States industries--including the organic chemical industry--would do little to alleviate the coal industry?s depressed economic conditions, While such small new markets would be welcome, an industry producing over 400 million tons per year must look to large tonnage outlets for solutions to its long range economic problems.

"Placer gold mineralizations have been observed in the north-eastern parts of Greece. Some of them have been at first evaluated to be of special interest so, exploration campaigns have been designed and carried out. Among the other exploration techniques applied on the sites of interest, drilling was the one to give the detailed information and data for the evaluation of the deposits. Having collected the data from trenching and two consecutive drilling campaigns, they were processed geostatistically to estimate the ore reserves and therefore the economic interest of the deposits. The latter was done by using exploitability indices, which would give a rough idea whether the deposits were economically feasible. A small number of such deposits have been spotted in the area and have been explored and evaluated as above. The present paper deals with the most important of them, giving all the process followed and the results derived from the exploration carried out."

The stability and integrity of protective coal pillars between the longwall working face and development roadways are greatly affected by the mining activities such as the development face advancing or retreat mining. Due to underground strata pressure, the coal pillar cracks could be further developed and then the air leakage passages (mainly cracks) could be produced greatly. The air circulation caused by the atmospheric pressure difference between the two sides of the coal pillar may also provide suitable conditions for the possible spontaneous combustion of the residual coal in the mine gob. In this paper, a typical the protective coal pillar in a Chinese coal mine is studied. The deformation and stress of coal pillars during the mining process of longwall working face are simulated by using FLAC3D. The displacement and strain of coal pillars are analyzed. Two indexes, the linear fracture rate (LFR) and area fracture rate (AFR), are introduced to characterize the development of internal cracks’ development within coal pillars. By using field measurement, the air leakage intensity distribution due to coal pillar cracks is obtained; the equation of air leakage resistance of coal pillar under the influence of mining is derived. Then, the possible location of large air leakage of coal pillar is determined, which can be used as guidelines to study the possibilities of coal spontaneous combustions happening in pillar or mine gob. The research results help to control such potential hazards in advance.

One of the highest costs associated with insitu leaching of copper is electric power. The ReGeneration Project addressed this cost issue with a research and development project for BHP Copper. The project involved the installation of a reverse pump/turbine for the removal of excessive fluid pressure and the production of useful electric power. The motivation for the project was that a reverse pump/turbine unit could not only remove the excess hydraulic pressure, but when connected to an induction .generator, would produce electric power, which could be easily connected to the local power gird, thus reducing operating costs. The project was successful in removing excess fluid pressure and producing electricity. The unit is operating today, producing useful 2,300 volt power at a rate of approximately 128 kilowatts.

"The underground coal mining industry in the United States has recently seen the occurrences of several high profile, multi-fatality events. The explosions that occurred at the Sago Mine in 2006, the Darby Mine in 2006, and the Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010 have caused a ripple in an otherwise steadily improving safety record. These events transpired in the midst of an unprecedented level of government regulations and modern safety technologies. The recent increase in fatal events in conjunction with a minimal decline of both fatal and non-fatal injuries over the past decade may signify that current safety practices have reached a level of diminishing returns. Risk management, a safety approach that has been successfully applied in various industries including mining across the world, may provide a means to surpass the safety plateau in the U.S. RISKGATE is an Australian risk management program for mines that shows great potential for application in the U.S. However, fundamental differences between the coal mining industries in Australia and in the U.S. prevent direct implementation. This paper discusses aspects of the RISKGATE body of knowledge that require some adaptation before this program may be applied to the U.S. mining industry. INTRODUCTION The underground coal mining industry in the United States has recently seen the occurrences of several high profile, multi-fatality events. In order to combat this stagnation in performance, a modification to the manner in which the mining industry approaches worker safety may be warranted. The implementation of a risk management based approach presents a potential method for not only surmounting the current safety plateau but also for achieving the long desired objective of zero harm. RISKGATE a risk management body of knowledge designed for the Australian mining industry that shows great potential for application in the U.S. This paper discusses aspects of the RISKGATE body of knowledge that require adaptation before implementation in the U.S. mining industry. These adaptations are based on differences in operating practices and governmental regulations. This discussion will focus on the three major U.S. risk areas of explosion prevention, ground control, and moving equipment."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The original application of sublevel caving was in ground so weak that it would collapse even in small headings when the support was removed. Heavily tim¬bered drifts were driven across the ore body; the timber was removed at the end of the drift, and the ore caved and slushed out. When dilution became excessive the next set was removed and so on. This method gave high dilution and poor recovery and was slow, but it was the only way to mine this type of ore body at that time. In more recent times the method has been adapted to stronger ground which needs to be drilled and blasted, so it is not a caving method as far as the ore is con¬cerned. However, the method does rely on the walls to cave and so the name sublevel caving has been retained. The method as presently generally applied is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Sublevels are established at approximately 7.6 to 12.2-m (25 to 40-ft) vertical intervals. They are usually accessed from a ramp system. A haulage drift is driven down the strike of the ore body, but in the waste. Production drifts are turned off the haulage drift and driven across the ore body on about 10.7-m (35-ft) horizontal centers. This divides the ore body into a geometrical pattern. Slot raises are driven at the end of the drifts near the ore-waste contact and the slot is expanded to the shape of the fan drilling. Up holes are drilled to break towards the slot at burdens of 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft). They are drilled past the next sublevel to the production drift im¬mediately above. When a sufficient number of fans has been drilled, production can start by blasting one or two fans at a time towards the slot. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units are used to muck the ore, which rills out into the drift. At first, when only a small area is mined, the walls may not cave, and the operation will be similar to open stoping. Later, sloughing from the walls will fill any voids created, and the ore after blasting will be con¬tained by the caved waste and gravitate downwards as mucking proceeds. Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. Design of a new underground laboratory is underway through the auspices of the United States National Science Foundation. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is scoped to provide a diverse group of researchers with a dedicated underground facility capable of supporting a broad spectrum of fundamental and applied research at depth in the Earth?s crust. Key research partners in the endeavor are physicists, biologists, geoscientists and engineers. Engineers are not only designing the underground facilities, but are also actively involved in developing research initiatives. This paper will introduce the DUSEL engineering research program to the mining community, provide an overview of the site, geology, and laboratory facilities, and describe some key program initiatives. The particular technical challenges and opportunities afforded by the construction of DUSEL and the performance of the integrated science-engineering program will be discussed by reference to a subset of research initiatives that are currently under development: Cavern Design, CO2 Sequestration and Transparent Earth. These research initiatives target the development of new techniques that can support improved subsurface investigation, design and construction procedures. An increased use of the subsurface can actively contribute to the development of new, more sustainable solutions for use in mining and civil engineering practice.

"The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to help the U.S. coal mining industry to design safe retreat room and pillar panels. ARMPS calculates the magnitude of the in-situ and mining-induced loads by using geometrical computations and empirical rules. In particular, the program uses the “abutment angle” concept in calculating the magnitude of the abutment load on pillars adjacent to a gob.In this paper, stress measurements from U.S. and Australian mines with different overburden geologies with varying hard rock percentages were back analyzed. The results of the analyses indicated that for depths less than 650 ft, the ARMPS empirical derivation of a 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 650 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21°. In this paper, a new equation employing the panel width to overburden depth ratio is constructed for the calculation of accurate abutment angles for deeper mining cases.The new abutment angle equation was tested using both ARMPS2010 and LaModel for the entire case history database of ARMPS2010. The new abutment angle equation to estimate the magnitude of the mining-induced loads used together with the LaModel program was found to give good classification accuracies compared to ARMPS2010 for deep cover cases.INTRODUCTIONIn the early 1990s, the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was introduced by Mark (1990) as a chain pillar design software and was generally accepted and used by the U.S. coal mining industry. Following the success of ALPS, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program for designing retreat mining pillars using a similar approach as ALPS (Mark and Chase, 1997). The Australian mining industry also recognized the success of ALPS, and Colwell, Frith, and Mark (1999) calibrated the program to Australian conditions. The ALPS and ARMPS programs draw their strengths from the large databases that are used to calibrate them (Mark, 2009). However, following the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse in 2007, NIOSH had to reconsider the pillar design criteria used in deep-cover retreat mining (Mark, 2010). The ARMPS overburden load prediction algorithm was improved to more accurately predict the loading of narrow panels with high overburden depths by implementing the pressure arch concept, and this new version is called ARMPS2010."

A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. "Qatar’s capital Doha is undergoing major infrastructure improvements including a multiphase stormwater management program. Although located in an arid climate, Doha experiences flooding during rainfall events. Dewatering operations and rising groundwater levels add to the management needs. To address those needs, construction of the Musaimeer collection tunnel along Doha’s southern rim is being followed by a marine outfall tunnel connecting a pump station to a dispersion field 10 km offshore. Qatar’s geology is characterized by sabkha deposits, a series of predominantly weak and karstic rock strata that creates challenging conditions for mechanized tunneling, as highlighted by the uncontrolled flooding of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) used on the Doha Metro tunnels. Risk associated with these challenges is magnified for the outfall tunnel by drive length, sub-sea elevation, and a single access point. This paper describes the outfall exploration strategy and design decisions made in light of experience gained during the collection tunnel construction. CONTEXT – STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Qatar has an arid climate with an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm. Precipitation is mostly confined to the winter months when rare, but occasionally heavy rainfall events easily lead to flooding in Doha’s metropolitan area. Its coastal location and flat topography a few meters above the sea level mean that the depth to the groundwater table is generally shallow. The karstic aquifers in the regional dolomite and limestone series contain groundwater of high salinity, which is not suitable as a potable water source. For supplying Doha’s population of more than 900,000 (2014) with potable water, the Ras Abu Fontas seawater desalination plant is operated about 10 km south of the city. This potable water production capacity is crucial for Doha’s development and – in conjunction with overirrigation and leaking sewage tanks – is also the root cause for rising groundwater tables that have been observed over the past years."

Potash, the general term for potassium salts used as fertilizers, is one of the essential growth nutrients (together with nitrogen and phosphates) required by all living things. Total world consumption of potash for fertilizer use - almost all of it in the form of potassium chloride - amounted to an estimated 47 million short tons in the 1979/80 fertilizer year*. While there is some limited demand for potash for a variety of industrial applications, this amounts to only 3 or 4 per cent of total world demand, and the potash business can be viewed as essentially a fertilizer business. Total available world potash production in the 1979/80 fertilizer year also amounted to approximately 47 million tons. There are two large potash producing countries - Canada and Russia - and a number of other countries where production is significant - East Germany, West Germany, the U.S.A., France, Israel and Spain. Production volumes are shown in Table 1.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. The Carson Hill mine in Calaveras County, California, was explored and developed by Grandview Resources Inc., as an open-pit heap-leached operation, with production commencing in the fall of 1986. Grandview entered the district in 1983 after a 40-year period of quiescense, the initial contact being by Barden Stevenot, V.F. Hollister, and J.J. Crowhurst. The last dividend declared by the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corp. was 3 1/2$ per share paid in January 1943. The mine was originally discovered in August 1848 by Jim Carson. Preceding the entry by Grandview in 1983, Cyprus Mines explored Carson Hill in 1975, and drill exposed a mineral inventory of 7.3 Mt (7,982,000 tons) averaging 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz per ton) gold. From that time until the Grandview entry, R.W. Thomssen and B.E. Stevenot continued investigations into the potential of the deposit. Grandview successfully investigated many of the metallurgical problems involved with heap leaching the ore. Metallurgical investigations were con- cluded under the direction of R.S. Shoemaker. By November 1984, J.A.C. Ross had prepared a prefeasibility report that included the earliest Grandview investigations. This report concluded that the deposit contained at least 6.8 Mt (7,440,000 tons) of ore that average 1.5 g/t (0.045 oz per ton) gold and that this ore could be mined with a 2: 1 stripping ratio. A final feasibility report was prepared by D.W. Pringle in September 1985. It showed a final ore reserve of 14.7 Mt (16,160,000 tons) of 1.7 g/t (0.049 oz per ton) gold. Attached is a description of the geology of the deposit from an internal report covering Cyprus activity in 1975 and a brief portion of USBM IC 6940 (1937).
