Size reduction is very energy intensive and is the single most power-intensive operation in mineral processing plants. Research has shown that only a small part of the energy is utilized efficiently. One of the major thrusts of all equipment manufacturers has been to improve this efficiency. Choosing the right equipment to maximize energy utilization in any comminution application has always been the utmost criteria. Due to the high energy cost and depletion of good grade minerals, it is becoming essential to optimize all the subsystems within a given comminution system for the overall economic success of such ventures. Bradley Pulverizer Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania recognized this and started offering its Feeder Controller in 1988 for automatic feed control. After its first successful operation, Bradley made this as a part of all of their grinding system standard offering. It was also recognized that the Feeder Controller was just a beginning and more automation and controls would be required for an overall, efficient grinding system.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

When considering the mill drive system for a grinding application, a large number of questions must be answered. Depending on the mill size and type, the mill can be driven by several configurations of drive systems: a single low-speed motor connected to a pinion driving a ring gear, two low-speed motors connected to two pinions and driving a ring gear, or a gearless motor mounted directly. In addition, a gear drive system can have a reducer placed between a high-speed motor(s) and pinion(s) or a power path splitting pinion stand. In some designs the reducer is integral with the pinion stand driven by a high-speed motor. The technical and commercial implications of several mill drive options are presented. Initial cost, cost of installation, cost of commissioning, and cost of operation and maintenance are presented for each drive option considered. The impact of each drive system on the design, cost and operation of the overall plant electrical system is discussed. Also, consideration is given to mill drive availability, and the potential cost resulting from delays in plant production.

The ability to detect and quantify ground movements in underground mine workings is of the utmost importance to the safety of miners and continuity of operations. Rib sloughage is one of the most common forms of underground deformations. Remote sensing techniques, such as laser scanning, can be used to quantify this rib sloughage, by recording precise, time-lapse point clouds of mine workings. In order to determine sloughage volumes and locations, a total of 11 laser scans were performed 41 days apart at a working section of an underground limestone mine. During this period, significant sloughing and scaling occurred, allowing for differentiation between the initial and final point clouds.

Hundreds of highway and rail transportation tunnels in North America have been rehabilitated in the last two decades. Tunnel rehabilitation is usually dictated by an owner’s need to extend the working life of the structure, but typically has the added benefit of increasing capacity (greater speed or increased clearance) and enhancing safety. Not only has rehabilitation proven to be an economical alternative to new tunneling, but it can be safely accomplished by working during short work “windows” without taking the tunnel out of service. This paper presents methodology for planning and designing of tunnel rehabilitation projects, and case histories illustrate successful excavation and support technologies.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

An algorithm used by the US Coast Guard to find lost objects is utilized to optimally allocate exploration efforts during initial stages of an exploration program. Based on classical search theory, the algorithm assumes a target probability distribution function, a detection func¬tion, and a cost function. The three Junctions are analogous to delineating areas of possible mineralization, choice of exploration methods, and exploration budget. Application of the algorithm is shown for a hypothetical target distribution. Using the maximum number of field days available as the cost function, the optimal allocation of effort is shown for different exploration methods, e.g. electromagnetic survey and induced polarization. The adaption of the algorithm for the exploration process is discussed.

"U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hours. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is heat and humidity buildup inside the RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in an occupied RA not exceed 95 °F. To investigate this, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4 °C (17 °F) and the relative humidity approached 94 percent at the end of a 96-hour test. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the volume-weighted average air temperature inside the RA tent at the end of 96 hours to within 0.06 °C (0.1 °F) of the average measured air temperature. IntroductionIf an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter a refuge alternative (RA) for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration, and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke or even death."

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. This will be the 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet. The four inductees are Lew Eklund, 76, Carrie Jane Billings Everson (1843-1914), ?Colonel? William C. Greene (1851-1911) and Arthur L. Hawkesworth (1860-1905). Lew Eklund founded Eklund Drilling that is now based in Elko, NV. He invented many designs that play a major role in today?s mining industry. His Cyclo Blower and various sampling devices he designed helped to revolutionize gold deposit exploration by allowing mining companies to effectively sample microscopic gold. Carrie Jane Billings Everson discovered and proved a method for bulk oil flotation concentration of mineral ores, the precursor to modern froth flotation methods of minerals concentration. She patented her process in 1886. In the early 1890s, coworkers built and operated demonstration plants incorporating her bulk oil flotation process. ?Colonel? William C. Greene was responsible for the development of the great copper mining properties of Cananea, Mexico. In seven years, he went from ragged cattleman and adventurer to the greatest captain of industry the borderlands have ever seen. Arthur L. Hawkesworth was a master mechanic for Anaconda Copper. He invented the detachable drill bit. His invention generated tremendous savings for the mining industry in time, in dollars and in safer operating conditions underground. His bit?s long lasting contribution to improved mine economics is immeasurable. The 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The inductions will bring to 201 the number of mining ?greats? whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

The Nutley Quarry Trunk Sewer Project is a good example of a tunnel that went through difficult and complex ground. The 2 m (7ft.) diameter and 840 m (2,750 ft.)long tunnel passed through soft ground, mixed face, and hard sandstone. The soft ground and mixed face tunneling provided several challenges. During excavation of the tunnel, the Contractor encountered a number of unanticipated large boulders. In addition, the length of the mixed face portion of the tunnel increased by 100%. The Contractor tried various construction techniques to overcome the difficult ground conditions and complete the project. The tunneling progress was slower than expected. The Contractor claimed extra costs for differing site conditions. Through discussions and negotiations between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner, all of the changed condition claims were settled before the construction of the project was completed. This paper addresses the difficult ground conditions, claims evaluation, and how they were resolved by cooperative efforts between the Contractor and the Owner/Engineer.

Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.

Gravel lithology affects the quality of aggregate because different rock types in gravel have different physical and chemical properties. The lithologic composition of alluvial gravel reflects the composition of its source terrane and the variable effects of weathering and transport on each rock type. This report discusses lithologic controls on aggregate quality in the mountain-front environment of the Colorado Front Range. Lithologic controls on aggregate quality of gravels were evaluated using pebble count data. Gravel lithology along the Front Range shows both temporal and regional variation. The principal variable in gravel lithology is quartz plus quartzite, of which quartzite is commonly more abundant. Large quantities of metaquartzite derived from the mountain front southwest of Boulder, Colo., were dispersed northeastward during deposition of the oldest Front Range gravels. Average quartz plus quartzite is greatest in the oldest gravels. Aggregate quality is probably enhanced by large quantities of quartzite. Abundant volcanic rocks in gravel may enhance aggregate quantity, but such occurrences are local in extent. Abundant sedimentary rocks in gravel, mainly sandstone near the mountain front, may decrease aggregate quality.

Mining, waste is growing problem both physical accumulation and increasing toxic uncertainties it presents in the long run. Its value ?zero? is strictly calculated by economy. This mining model begs the question: What is the value of waste & what does it represent to the mining industry? Waste is widely accepted as a ?by product? generated as a consequences of the mining process. The abundant waste accumulation affects society, as receptor, in many ways and the waste piles of materials has no use and no destiny. In reality, this waste is monument of imperfection of the extractive industries worldwide. Our planet is finite and has strict limitations, which mining has traditionally ignored. It is time to design a new system, in which clearly, waste design must be integrated in whole mining process; it has no room to postpone. This paper presents a concept in waste design by which toxic mining waste not only can be rendered inert but also act as nutrient to help balance the ecosystems. This concept calls for extractive industries to pursue EQUILIBRIUM with nature (Geomimic). Also, this concept offers countless gains and opportunities fro the industry and by converting liabilities into assets; mining engineers become the managers and stewards of nature. Also, waste design offers new solutions for proper and sustainable waste management of the mining industry.

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. As the 2013 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2013 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Vol. 334. The timely publication of professional papers that promote the advancement of scientific and technical knowledge is critical for enabling technology transfer. SME plays a key role in this process through its publications. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful profession and society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2013 Transactions contains 73 papers covering most every aspect of the mining life cycle and encompassing the diverse sectors of our industry including coal, industrial minerals, metals, health and safety and computational methods. It includes all 18 papers published in 2013 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 65) and all 33 papers published in 2013 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 30). Additionally, this volume contains 22 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. Some of the many research highlights from 2013 include discussions of perennial issues, such as how to adequately prepare the next generation of mining engineering students for the workforce (Frimpong et al., pp. 44-52) and how to predict and prevent coal mine bursts and bumps (Pariseau, pp. 60-68), the highly anticipated February Rare Earths issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, and papers analyzing electrical injuries in the U.S. Mining industry (Homce and Cawley, p. 367-375) the latest in assessing the safety and efficiency of operations. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2013 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Fan performance graphs are generated by digital computer using two programs, RUN- FANS and FANPLOT. RUNFANS calculates fan performance data from stored specific-volume, specific-speed data for a given fan type with appropriate allowances for fan diameter, rotational speed and air density. FANPLOT accepts specifications for drawing the graph and accepts either user-supplied pressure-quantity data or RUNFANS- calculated data as input, Operational procedures for both programs are detailed and examples of their interactive query routines are included. The hardware necessary to generate the graphs is illustrated. Several hardcopy output options are discussed,

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.

The Henderson/ML King CSO Project is a major combined sewer overflow (CSO)reduction project for the Department of Natural Resources and Parks of King County, Washington. The central element of the project is the 3100 lineal feet long, 14'-8"diameter 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel. During the course of the project, the owner and consultants evaluated numerous elements of the tunnel including the alignment, geotechnical conditions, tunnel liner, and settlement monitoring requirements. The contractor utilized innovative shaft construction methods for the tunnel portals, and adhered to strict contract requirements in successfully constructing the tunnel. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction elements of the 42nd Ave S Storage/Treatment Tunnel that led to the successful completion of the project.
