Water-cooled copper tap-hole blocks provide an effective means of extending the life of tap-hole refractories, as the lower temperature of the refractory material inhibits wear and other damage and promotes the formation of a protective frozen slag layer. This is particularly beneficial during prolonged tapping cycles. The copper block forms an integral part of the lining, and provides mechanical support to the refractory, facilitating rapid replacement of tapping channel bricks without disturbing the surrounding lining. Safety considerations are an important design factor, and the positioning of the water channels is optimized to prevent leaks although the copper is not in direct contact with the molten fluids during normal operation. Water-cooled copper blocks designed by Tenova Pyromet have successfully been utilized on metal, matte, and slag tap-holes for a number of processes, including nickel, platinum group metals, and mineral wool.

In mineral processing plants ore extracted from mines is processed to obtain a concentrate with the highest possible concentration of this valuable product. It is a complicated multi-stage process. Usually, the first step is sieving the ore, which is typically done using vibrating mining screens. There is often only a limited number of these machines in the technological chain, which is why their continuous operation, and proper maintenance is crucial for the whole process. Predictive maintenance is the best strategy in this case because it allows for minimising the number and duration of unexpected stoppages. It consists of the prediction of future failures based on available real-time data, and predictive models built upon this data using, for example, machine learning techniques. In this paper we concentrate on feature generation for future predictive maintenance model development for a vibrating screen, based on an example of a KGHM ore processing facility in Polkowice-Sieroszowice. We focus on two types of measurements: bearings temperature and vibrational data. Based on the raw data, the process of more advanced feature engineering is described. By transforming the temperature data we calculate characteristics of bearing cooling and heating dynamics, while based on vibrational data, the aggregated characteristics of the vibrations are derived. Such features are calculated on a long-term basis, and then they are compared to the data related to vibrating screen maintenance to estimate their significance for the prediction of particular failures of the machine.

It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica, the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclones are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2 platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

The effect of microwave radiation on the processing of Palabora open pit ore has been investigated. Significant reductions in Bond work index are demonstrated for microwave treated samples. Reductions in work index were found to be sensitive to applied power level and method of application. After single stage magnetic separation tests, improvements in recovery of FeO were noted. However, these were curtailed by oxidation of the magnetite species as a result of continued heating. The effects of microwave radiation upon the recovery of copper after froth flotation were also quantified. Small initial increases in recovery of copper were note dafter microwave treatment. However, with prolonged exposure, recovery was found to decrease. Overall recovery of copper was not affected except for samples treated for extended duration. The influence of microwave treatment upon the conventional Palabora grinding circuit has been quantified with the use of USIMPAC software. Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate(DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromite rejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project's scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

Knowing more about an orebody makes it easier to exploit it profitably. Many orebodies are made up of different rock types, alteration zones or mineralogical ensembles: oxides versus sulphides or facies with different metallurgical properties for example. Being able to model the spatial layout of these different facies is vital to good mine planning and management. Kriging cannot be used to generate numerical models of orebodies with complex geometric patterns because it gives too smooth an image. Over-smoothing has the meaning of changing the natural selectivity. Conditional simulations are required to do this kind of model respecting the natural variability: honouring the natural selectivity, dilution and ore loss. Standard geostatistical simulations cannot duplicate many of the complex spatial relationships seen in the earth sciences, such as differently orientated facies, sets of conjugate veins or ore types where certain facies cannot touch. After a presentation of the case study, it will be shown why traditional methods for simulating indicators like the sequential indicator simulations, or the truncated gaussian method, cannot be used to simulate it. Plurigaussian simulations are then introduced and shown to be more powerful than the previous methods in their range of application. This is confirmed by the case study treated; a Chilean copper deposit, for which the plurigaussian simulations are seen to respect the different orientations of the individual facies as well as honouring the facies seen in drill holes, and respecting the proportion of each facies even if this varies in space (e.g. increases or decreases with depth). One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.

High carbon ferrochromium is produced by carbon reduction. No replacement for carbon as reductant has yet been developed. The reduction creates a considerable amount of CO-gas. In open and semi-closed furnaces the gas is burned when leaving the burden. In closed furnaces the formed gas is sucked out by a fan, washed and utilised as fuel. The formation of carbon monoxide is presented briefly starting from thermodynamic considerations up to solid and liquid state reduction. The volume, composition and energy content of the furnace gas are discussed, focusing on the raw materials and pre-treatment processes of the furnace feed as well as on the process equipment and control. Outokumpu has been using closed and sealed furnaces and utilising the CO-gas in its Tornio Ferrochrome Works since 1968. Today in Tornio with an annual ferrochromium production of 260 000 t CO-gas production is 186 million m3, representing 68 MWh an hour. At the same time the furnace power input is 95MW. About 98 % of the CO-gas is utilised, whereof 30% in the ferrochrome production itself. This paper focuses on the characteristics and utilisation of CO-gas. CO-gas is secondary energy, which on one hand saves primary electric and fossil fuel energy in ferrochromium production and, on the other, replaces other fossil fuels at the adjacent steel works. The characteristics of the fuel, requirements for utilisation as well as health and safety aspects are discussed. Utilisation of the gas has a high impact on the total dust and gaseous emissions and on the energy optimisation at the ferrochromium and steel works.

"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. "The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization.Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ’old hands’ are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers.Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries."

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Sc Eng (Extractive Metallurgy) degree Screening is an industrial process that splits material at a specific cut size into one fraction of particles larger than the cut size and another fraction of particles smaller than the cut size. Particles are vibrated to increase the probability of them being accurately classified and to move the oversize particles off the screen surface. In conventional screening, the screen mesh vibrates with a single frequency and the particles on the screen are all exposed to this same frequency. The Ultimate Screener (see Figure 1) is a new screen technology that imparts multi-frequency vibrations to the screen mesh so that different parts of the screen surface vibrate at different frequencies. The Ultimate Screener incorporates an additional deck that holds the multi frequency adapters as shown by Figure 2. These special adapters can transform single frequency vibrations into multi frequency vibrations. When the screen motors are switched on they begin to vibrate. This vibration is transmitted to the adapters via the body of the machine. The adapters then modify the vibration to have multiple frequencies, which are transmitted to the screen surface via resonating rings.

As the world continues to face the turmoil of the economic environment, legislative prerequisites and physical conditions the intervention of technological development is vital for the continuation of the ancient source of revenue: mining. The Palabora underground mining project is a state-of-the-art shaft mining system that will prove to be a benchmark in its field for years to come. An integration of modern technology?both in application and development?has resulted in a shaft system that is intrinsically holistic. Every aspect of the mining and production process has undergone thorough investigation, simulation and innovation to ensure that every component is selected by design and not simply conforming to past practice or trends. The process philosophy includes proven technology such as to promote the lowest operating cost and process time with the highest yield. The underground mining system is in the final stages of commissioning and will shortly be producing a nominal 30 000 tons per day with a predominantly automated system. This paper discusses the complete state-of-art shaft system developed for the Palabora underground mine, and refers particularly to the headgear, the winders, the conveyances and the shaft guide system, as well as the loading system developed specifically for the high performance requirements of the mine.

Transient states of the air parameters in mine workings occur as the effects of natural and technological disturbances, and in particular as a result of changes in ventilation conditions, caused by alteration of the mine workings geometry, state of fans performance or emission of gases. Particularly significant are those transient states caused by disturbances resulted from catastrophes, since they are frequently associated with violent phenomena that may be a danger for life and health of the staff working underground. The paper presents a number of examples of transient states of the air parameters in mine workings after a catastrophe, like the bump in the ZABRZE-BIELSZOWICE coal mine. Registration of air disturbances by the monitoring systems of ventilation in mine workings in the area of disaster both at the moment of a catastrophe occurrence and later during the rescue operation, enabled to track out the incident and identify the circumstances and reasons of those tragic events which caused death of 18 miners during last two years. Furthermore, computer simulations of processes occurring in mine ventilation network make effective research tools to be applied in practice, among others for the study of accidents and disasters.
