The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

Extractive metallurgy in Iron Age South Africa U. S. KUSEL, B.A. Hons. (Pta) (Visitor) The finds relating to the metal-working of Iron Age Bantu tribes are reviewed, the following metals or alloys being considered: gold, tin, copper, bronze, brass, and iron. Most is known about copper- and iron-working, but even this is very little, and no one has successfully been able to demonstrate how iron was smelted in the primitive furnaces that have been found.

The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers (FSPE) recently conducted a survey of professional engineering manpower in South Africa. This article presents the data relevant to mining and metallurgical engineering. FSPE in their survey attempted to determine the supply of engineers in South Africa both from local universities and by immigration. The immigrants gave some problems in that it is difficult to know whether a man who claims to be professionally qualified really is. However, it was estimated that the ratio of immigrants who claimed to be qualified to those who really are the equivalent of our local graduates was between 1,0 and 1,9 for mining engineers, and between 2,0 and 4,1 for metallurgical engineers.

METRICATION In order to bring South Africa into line with metric countries the world over and in view of the indisputable advantages of using the comma as a decimal sign, the Metrication Advisory Board has decided to recommend that the comma be used consistently as decimal sign as from April 1, 1971. Numbers consisting of more than three figures are separated by spaces into groups of three to the left and right of the comma, and not by commas, e.g... 2 734 671,512 73 A quantity such as 12,41 kg is read as "twelve comma four one kilograms" and 31,34 km as "thirty-one comma three four kilometres." A motor-car previously described as a 3.8 litre model now becomes a 3,8 litre model. THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1972-1973 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of all races in the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards:- SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such residents who hold University degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for post-graduate study at Universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October 1972. All arrangements will be made by the British Council and the scholarships will include tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, approved travel in Britain, return fares to Britain, a books grant and a clothing grant. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold University degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational in-institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council will arrange full programmes and professional contacts, and the bursaries will include a maintenance grant, a books grant, authorised course fees and certain other expenses. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for application is 31st July, 1971. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1972, and 31st March, 1973, and are provided to facilitate visits to British Universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African Universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration though grants are occasionally made for visits lasting for one complete term. Grant holders will make their own arrangements with the universities which they wish to visit and will be responsible for finding their own accommodation. The British Council's assistance is limited to the contribution towards cost of fares. The closing date for applications is 31st October, 1971. A new type of bit, that has been developed and is being evaluated, shows great potential in expanding the range of rock strength that can be cut by continuous miners and roadheaders. This new style of bit is called the frustum. The tools tested in this program were developed, manufactured and patented by Briese Industrial Technologies, Inc. The frustum derives its name from the unique geometric shape of the cutter, or cutting insert. The frustum shape cutting tool has previously been proven as an effective cutting tool for machining metals, metal matrix composites and polymers. The frustum rock bit has a very dense carbide frustum shape tip mounted on the end of a steel body similar to the conical bits typically used on continuous miners and roadheaders. In between the carbide frustum cutting tip and the steel body there can be a bearing that allows the frustum to rotate around the bit axis. When the bit is forced into the rock at a skewed angle, the frustum tip rotates as it travels. This rotation greatly reduces the cutting forces acting on the bit when compared to the current state of the art conical drag bits. This cutting force reduction, derived from the frustum’s cutting action, allows for much harder and more abrasive rock to be cut without quickly wearing out the bit. Full scale laboratory cutting tests have been performed with the frustum bit in direct comparison to the current state of the art conical bits. Field trials of the frustum bit are currently being planned. Test procedures, results and findings are presented.

Colloquium and General Meeting A General Meeting and Colloquium was held on 'New Advances in Non-ferrous Pyrometallurgy' in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 17th March, 1976. The President, Dr R E. Robinson, opened the proceedings at 1OhOO,by welcoming the authors and delegates, who numbered approximately one hundred and twenty. Tinplate Conference The Tin Research Institute is organizing the 1st International Tinplate Conference, which is to be held in London from 5th to 8th October, 1976.

The occurrence, properties, and uses of andalusite, and its advantages over other refractory minerals and materials, are discussed. Ore reserves are given for the five producing areas, and statistics on production, export sales, and prices are included to illustrate the growth of the industry since the early 1960s. The mining and beneficiation procedures are described, with special reference to new techniques in concentration and magnetic separation. As fines dumps represent a considerable source of andalusite, possible methods of recovery are discussed. . The outlook for the future appears favourable, and possible competition from other sources and substitute refractory minerals are mentioned. It is concluded that the industry is in a sound position to maintain South Africa's status as the world's foremost producer and supplier of andalusite.

This paper presents data collected from full-scale plants in order to verify the predictions of a new simulator of CIP or CL operations. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the simulator predictions. The simulator is able to predict the effects of many of the complex operating phenomena in GIP and CL plants that previous simulation techniques could not describe. This is illustrated by predictions of how factors, such as the manner of carbon transfer, concurrent leaching, and gold loading on eluted carbon, can affect the performance of an adsorption plant.

Duplex stainless steels containing high levels of manganese and copper and lower-than-normal levels of nickel were produced and evaluated. The experimental alloys containing 3 per cent copper by mass could not be successfully hot-rolled. Alloys containing less than 2 per cent copper could be hot- and cold-rolled without difficulty. The wrought experimental alloys that contained copper were found to offer some advantages over the 2205- type duplex stainless steel in sulphuric acid at 52°C. Resistance to pitting attack was governed primarily by the chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, and one of the experimental alloys was superior to the 2205-type alloy in the ferric chloride test. It is concluded that manganese is a useful substitute for nickel in duplex alloys, but that further work is required before the present alloys, or variations of them, could be commercially viable.

Water is a valuable and in many areas a scarce resource. Governmental legislation regulates the environmental impact of water usage and wastewater disposal through the issue of licenses. These requirements mean that hydrometallurgical refineries must ensure that water consumption and water disposal is managed on a continuous basis in order to prevent the repeal of their operating license. Water balances are often overlooked during the design of a hydrometallurgical refinery. Recent changes in environmental legislation have forced both design engineers and operational management to review water use and disposal within these processes. Unlike concentrators where water can easily be recovered by recycling from tailing dams, water introduced into hydrometallurgical refineries becomes contaminated with soluble metals and thus requires pre-treatment prior to disposal. This paper discusses the various concerns that need to be considered during design and operation of hydrometallurgical refineries with respect to the water balance.

The first commercial Corex Plant in the world capable of producing liquid iron from a variety of low-grade coals was commissioned in 1990 by Iscor at its Pretoria Works. The Plant has an annual production capacity of 300 kt of liquid iron. Because the compulsory use of coke is eliminated, the new method offers an economic and revolutionary alternative to liquid-iron production. Coke used in traditional blastfurnaces is manufactured from high-grade coal of which the available sources in South Africa are limited.

A short review is given of the effects of corrosion fatigue on the materials used in pressurized water-reactor vessels. Selected topics such as testing procedures, test data, and mechanisms in simulated environments are discussed. The main fact that emerges is that most of the data on the growth of fatigue cracks reside below the ASME X1 1980 High-R 'Wet' design-code lines, Le. they fall within that specification. Finally, some recent advances in the understanding of the corrosion-fatigue behaviour of such materials in pressurized water reactors are highlighted.

SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. These titaniferous magnetites occur as segregations in the gabbro body and the TiO2 is mainly present within the structure of other constituent minerals but also occurs in smaller amounts as ilmenite and ulvospinel. The vanadium is thought to be present in the iron oxide phase due to isomorphous replacement of the iron. Until very recently, it was feared that the high titania content of these titaniferous magnetites would militate against their value as useful iron ores. The past decade has seen a tremendous revival of the base metal industry in Africa, coupled with an unprecedented increase in the prices of base metal commodities in the last couple of years. The theme of the 4th Southern African Base Metal Conference, is therefore, ?Africa?s base metals resurgence?. This conference will explore the contributions made by the mining and metallurgical disciplines to the base metals industry in Africa. It will also investigate how the base metals industry in Africa can capture the maximum potential from the increase in base metal prices through research, innovative thinking, new ways of operating and project implementation. The conference will also consider the influence of Europe?s REACH programme on the base metal industry in Southern Africa. The conference will include a technical visit to Rössing Mine (Uranium) and will be followed by technical visits to Ongopolo (copper), Skorpion Mine (zinc) and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation(zinc and lead). The conference, to be held in Swakopmund, Namibia, also confirms the commitment of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), to hosting a regular forum on base metals in the Southern African region. Contribution by J.S. Kuijpers* Kirsten's paper discusses the potential for seismic activity on faults in relation to depth, span, stope support, and discontinuity strength, and puts forward some explicit conclusions. Quoting from the author, the main conclusions are as follows, together with my comments. Author's reply The author gratefully acknowledges the contribution to his paper. It provides further elucidation to the very complex problem of quantifying the effects of mining-induced seismicity. The mechanical behaviour of rock under seismic excitation has been sadly neglected over the past twenty years, during which attention was almost exclusively focused on the study of the spatial location of seismic events. It is to be lamented that, on the eve of South Africa's movement to significantly greater depths of mining, so little quantities information is known about the mechanical effects of seismicity. It is a challenge at this stage to make up for this lapse in knowledge in the shortest possible time.

ROBBINS* (Visitor) Although the past decade has witnessed many improvements in large-diameter drilling machinery for the boring of raises, there is still room for improvement both in operational use and in the design of equipment. Some of the available machines are described and illustrated, and it is concluded that the possibilities of new systems and designs should continually be re-assessed since the factors that determine their feasibility, such as bore diameter, cutter costs, and penetration rates, are changing rapidly.

The transport of tailings composites provided by different sources is a field of study where a limited amount of research has been conducted. Nevertheless, such systems are important sources of operational difficulties, especially in the case of high clay content tailings. The case presented in the present paper consists of a free surface flow pipeline transporting a composite of two different tailings with high clay content. It has presented operational difficulties such as partial blockages and upstream box and air intake overtopping events. In the present paper, the causes of these difficulties are identified. These include lack of complete mixing of the different tailings, multi-layered flow with low velocity and high yield values with high frictional losses. The pipeline characteristics and performance are analysed in three stages: design, initial operation and enhanced operation, the latter accomplished by means of increasing turbulence in the box located upstream from the pipeline. The last section of the pipeline and another distribution pipeline system located downstream from the pipeline have performed well. The cause of different behaviour of both systems is also assessed.

Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. This excellent volume, published by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, contains all the thirty papers presented at the International Symposium held in London in October, 1971. Electric Melting Practice by A. G. E. Robiette, Charles Griffin and Co. 412 pp. In recent years the application of electric furnaces to melting processes has expanded to such an extent that it has become a topic in its own right, quite distinct from the related subject of electric smelting which is still limited, for the most part, to those areas where inexpensive electrical power is available. Optimum use of manpower by A. J. van Zyl. The sixties represented one of the longest periods of sustained economic growth South Africa has experienced. At the same time it caused a certain amount of inflation and an acute manpower shortage.
