A simple method for the application of excess shear stress (ESS) analysis to the mining of planar reefs is examined. The potential for seismicity associated with mining is expressed as the calculated increase in ESS on a regular grid of points 50 m above the reef, and is compared with observed seismicity around a deep-level, relatively geologicaly-undisturbed gold mine. Thirty regions were studied, involving over 2000 seismic events with magnitudes greater than 1,5 on the Richter scale and associated with almost 2 million square metres of stoping. The total seismicity, measured either as the number of seismic events or as the total radiated energy, corelated more closely with changes in ESS than with ERR. The incidence of rockbursts also favoured the ESS model. Corelation coeficients of around 0,8 for seismicity and ESS indicated that the assumptions inherent in the method used are collectively reasonable. The total seismicity in each region was found not to be strongly controlled by the presence of dykes and faults, although numerous individual seismic events were located close to such features.

This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

Petrographic analyses of coal rank and maceral-group composition are widely used in the characterization of coal. This paper describes the use of an image analyser (IBAS Kontron) for fuly automated measurements of the rank and maceral groups of seam coals. The rank is then derived from reflectance histograms, or 'fingerprints', of coal reflectance distributions (being expressed as the mean random reflectance of vitrinite). The volume proportions of the maceral groups are calculated from the histograms. The results obtained with the IBAS were generally in agreement with those obtained by conventional methods of reflectance measurement and point-count analysis. However, the results were inconsistent for coals with a bimodal character or a wide V-class distribution. The rank of the analysed coals ranged from 0,50 to 1,10 per cent mean random reflectance. The lowest reflectance that can be analysed with the IBAS is 0,4 per cent. The speed, objectiveness, and repeatability of this technique make it exceptionally suitable for use in the quality control of large numbers of samples.

Much of the technology and methodology extensively employed in current mining operations is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and, consequently, subject to the principle of diminishing returns. It is probable that future gains in productivity and safety of the magnitude essential for the sustained economic viability of the industry will be derived only from a determined technological development programme. The history of trackless mechanized mining, which represented a radical change in methodology in deep-level gold mines, is reviewed. The benefits and obstacles to the realization of the full potential are highlighted. Similarly, an overview is given of alternative mechanization developments in South Africa. In addition to the development and application of advanced technology, an envelope of operating parameters relevant to each methodology must be engineered to facilitate the site-specific selection of the most appropriate. Furthermore, a mechanism for the evaluation of cost effectiveness is essential to the decision-making process. The narrow, tabular orebodies of relatively low dip that are encountered in the South African hard-rock mining industry make the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of stoping equipment extremely difficult. The machinery that has been available to date has demonstrated only limited site-specific success. The development of suitable machinery must necessarily be initiated and driven by the South African mining industry in collaboration with the major equipment manufacturers in the world.

S. J. Venning (Member): The authors should be congratulated on producing such concise data from the plethora of experimental report results. Their observations on the cost of liners calls for some comment however, as the really unique feature about liners in South Africa is that they can be obtained so cheaply. Attention has been focussed on the 1961 cost of white iron at R50 per ton for chill cast block liners while manganese steel liners are reported as costing as much as R250 per ton. The former are however, a relatively heavy, simple casting with a low labour content and reasonably high percentage productivity, made from metal melted in a cupola. The capital investment to produce this type of casting is low compared with that required to produce manganese or other alloy steels. The chill cast liner block is always a production item and is cast in a permanent mould. Almost all manganese mill liners, except perhaps small aperture screens, are sold for considerably less than the R250 per ton quoted by the authors. Where a price of this nature is asked it would be because the design of the casting demanded is complicated or leaves little metal to carry the labour and other costs of production. As reference has also been made in the paper to liner costs in America, prices for similar types of liners obtained during a visit to Canada and the U.S.A. in 1961, could be of interest: Material Price per Location short ton Ni-hard R250 Elliot Lake Body liners block type Ni-Hard R300-310 FAS New York Mn Steel R280-290 FAS New York Screens (grids) slotted Cr.Mo. Steel R600 FAS New York hole Ni-Hard R320 Elliot Lake At this time the price of comparable manganese steel block type liners on the Witwatersrand was between R145/R155 per short ton. White iron in Canada was then quoted at about R150 per ton, but as Ni-Hard gave a life of at least two to twoand-a-half times that of white iron, it was a much more attractive proposition particularly when relining and down time costs were taken into consideration. There is little doubt that most foundries would welcome clear and complete specifications of the customers requirements and systematic checks to ensure that these specifications are being met. B.S.S. or other accepted standards should form the basis of these, and periodic inspections should be undertaken to ensure that only those foundries capable of complying should be included as suppliers. The authors have referred to new designs, but can the industry really call the grid and plate new when the patents were taken out during the second world war and the sawtooth block has been used for at least 35 years. Unfortunately, far too little thought and consideration are normally given to the ultimate mill liner design while the mills themselves are on the drawing boards. It is generally recognized that a large proportion of the gold remaining in the residues from metallurgical plants on the Witwatersrand is occluded in pyrite. The conventional flotation-roasting process typically recovers approximately 40 per cent of this gold. The process described here is an unconventional route involving bacterial oxidation, which can achieve a gold recovery of approximately80 per cent. The paper describes tests carried out in the laboratory, as well as on a slimes dam. The results show that recovery of gold can be noticeably enhanced through the use of bacteria under conditions of controlled pH, moisture, and aeration. Biological oxidation of the pyrite releases the occluded gold, which then becomes amenable cyanidation.

Good progress was made in a number of areas, while in others the foundation was laid for future progress. An investigation is described in which the resistivities of Mamatwan manganese ore, Delmas coal, and Iscor coke, at temperatures or up to 1400°C were determined, as well as the resistivities of mixtures of ore of a constant size range with Delmas coal or Iscor coke of three different size ranges. The resistivities of the ore and the coal were characteristic of those for semi-conducting materials, were strongly influenced by temperature, and decreased by several orders of magnitude between room temperature and IOOO°C. The resistivity of the coke changed only slightly between room temperature and 1400°C, and the resistivity of the coal approached that of the coke at I300°C. This provides support for the theory that the resistivity of carbonaceous reducing agents is primarily a function of heat treatment, and not of the rank and composition of the coal. Above 1200°C, the resistivity of mixtures of ore and coke fell steeply owing to an increase in the volume fraction of coke in the mixture and to the formation of slag. The results were similar for the three different size ranges of coke. The extremely high resistivities of ore-coke and ore-coal mixtures at Iow temperatures indicate that there is unlikely to be much conduction of current in the higher regions of a furnace. Thus, the resistance of a furnace is governed mainly by the conditions at the electrode tips and in the molten regions. To explain the very Iow resistances of furnaces, usually, about I m£?, it would be necessary for investigations to be conducted under conditions similar to those in the active zone of a furnace.

This paper reviews the development and suitability of various important thermophysical and electrical properties with respect to base metal mattes. Areas of focus include the critical validation of measurements of viscosity, density, surface and interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, and an overview of the various experimental methods used to determine these properties. Accurate physical property data of mattes are critical in process modelling and computational fluid dynamic modelling of smelting and converting operations employed in the extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. Pipe-stick support in deep-level gold mines is first described and illustrated, a pipe-stick being a mine pole trimmed to the required size and sleeved by a pipe. An account is then given of an investigation into this form of support that involved load-compression tests in a 1000-ton press, tests in a rapid loading machine simulating rock-burst conditions, a study of the load-compression behaviour of pipesticks installed underground, and a cost evaluation. Pipe-stick support was found to be very effective on the face and to cost less than conventional matpacks.

This paper sketches an expert system for use underground in pinpointing problem areas in the operation of machines. The system is typically a software 'shell' designed to accommodate a series of 'if-then' rules that are intertinked to systematically search for the cause of the problem. During the search, the system asks a series of questions that have to be answered by the operator and then, when necessary, by an artisan. The rules of the system are generated by a knowledge engineer whose function it is to gather the necessary diagnostic information and prepare it in the required format for the expert system. Much still requires to be done in the development of such systems and in the testing of hardware to withstand the mining environment.

This paper describes the design and construction of the first experimental underground rockcutting machine from measurements of cutting forces determined in tests on small rock specimens in the workshop. The deficiencies of this design, revealed by stoping with almost identical rockcutting machines, are described. An account is given of the design and construction of further experimental machines incorporating substantial improvements which made them technically feasible for use in production.

This note considers the most fundamental concepts of support design for deep underground openings and discusses them briefly in the context of tabular stoping and deep hard-rock tunnelling. It concludes that the conventional re-bar, mesh, and lacing methods that have been widely used in deep gold mines are quite inappropriate for the support of highly stressed tunnels. The following is suggested as the criterion for adequate dynamic support: the energy absorbed by a support unit (yielding through some acceptable limited displacement) should exceed the kinetic energy generated by the mass of rock that is intended to be retained by that unit.

Occupational illnesses and diseases tend to be chronic and are generally characterized by temporary or permanent physical dysfunction. With the exception of some symptoms, they are not generally visible. Therefore, safety overrides health in mining because occupational ailments take years to develop and management observes less physical trauma, if they witness anything at all. Occupational health issues need to be addressed systematically, encompassing all aspects of the interaction of employees within the work environment. Risk assessment is central to the management of occupational health. This should not be seen as a complex process and may involve little more than simply considering the consequences of one?s actions before starting work. Competent risk assessment provides the starting point and defines the scope of further action. The objectives and final use of an occupational health risk assessment determine the process and the method by which it is carried out. The occupational health risk assessment is therefore a systematic procedure to identify potential health hazards, evaluate the extent of exposure subjectively and/or objectively, and to establish the need for, and effectiveness of existing control measures. Furthermore, it facilitates the drafting of occupational exposure monitoring, medical surveillance and occupational health education programmes. Various models for conducting occupational health risk assessment provide step-by-step guidance for the identification and assessment of significant occupational health hazards and assist in producing suitable and significant occupational health risk assessments. The paper gives an overview of an occupational health risk assessment model based on the basic principles of occupational health and the legislative requirements, which will simplify the occupational health risk assessment process and ensure a sound base for the development of all other occupational health systems.

CONTRIBUTION BYH. WAGNER AND T.T. OZAN The paper by Dr J.N. van der Merwe makes an important contribution to the design of bord-and-pillar workings in the Vaal basin. It has been recognised for some time that the strength of coal seams in the Vaal basin is markedly lower than that of coal seams in other coal-mining districts in South Africa. However, there was insufficient data to quantify how much weaker the extensively jointed coal the Vaal basin is. A number of recent pillar collapses that occurred at Sigma colliery, the only remaining underground colliery in the Vaal basin, provided Dr Van der Merwe with an opportunity to make this assessment.

The advantages to be gained from the use of a high-density ion-exchange resin in a uranium recovery circuit are shown. It is concluded that, in existing fluidized-bed plants, the throughput of solution can be increased by up to 40 per cent at the same uranium recovery. Alternatively, the values in the barren solution can be improved at the same flow-rate of solution.
