The near-surface wave attenuation factor k (kappa), which describes the attenuation of seismic waves with distance in the upper 1–3 km of the Earth, was determined for the Far West Rand gold mining area using seismic data recorded by station Parys (PRYS) of the South African National Seismograph Network. Twenty micro-events in the magnitude range 0.7 ? ML ? 1.8 for the period 1 July to 15 November 2015 were analysed. For the analysis a 10-second window for the S phase portion of the vertical component seismogram was selected. The result was an average k = 0.048 ± 0.014 s, which is much higher than for a stable continental region where k = 0.006 s. This is because the assumed Brune source model is inappropriate for describing mining-related events that often have moment tensors with a volumetric (implosive) component. The average k was calculated to be 0.098 ± 0.038 s for explosions of a similar magnitude. This higher value derived for mining-related k may be employed as a means of correcting the Brune source spectrum to calculate seismic moment as well as corner frequency for events in the mining areas of South Africa.

"After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

Water auditing and water efficient practices are evolving as the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. This paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a gold mining environment. It will contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research assists with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and provides, on the ground, steady-state data for ongoing probabilistic modeling underway at most of Newmont?s gold mine operations. Five Newmont case study mine sites including the Tanami Granites Goldmine are central to this PhD water project study. The function of the Tanami-Granites water audit exercise was to measure a controlled flow of various water quality types and set a framework to establish further research for water efficiencies and water conservation in mining.

Computational fluid dynamics have been applied for detailed modelling of particle-bubble collisions. The most accurate approach in the previous work is using the point particle method to treat particles and bubbles. Nevertheless, the sizes of particles and bubbles are generally bigger than the Kolmogorov scale in the high turbulence of the flotation environment, which makes the point particle method inappropriate. This paper describes particle-resolved direct numerical simulation on the collisions between particles (denoted as heavy particles) and bubbles (denoted as light particles) in a homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow field, and a comparison with the point particle method.. A largescale stochastic forcing scheme was implemented within the mesoscopic multiple-relaxation-time LBM approach to maintain turbulence intensity at targetted levels. Both kinematic and dynamic collision kernels were evaluated to study the correlation of total collision events and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate. The results show that collisions between particles increase with the TKE dissipation rate as radial relative velocities between particles increase with it. In the particle-resolved simulations, the dynamic collision kernels were found to not match with the kinematic collision kernels as in the point particle method. Quantitatively, they were approximately 4 to 10 times smaller than the corresponding dynamic collision kernels. Therefore, it is not reasonable to estimate the kinematic collision kernel in particle-resolved simulations as its rationales are not valid. However, the collision behaviour can still be accounted for by means of the dynamic collision kernel since it is obtained from the direct statistical analysis of the collision events. An electrochemical investigation of the dissolution of copper, nickel, and copper-nickel alloys in ammonium carbonate solutions by M. J. NICOL, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Hons.) (Wits.) (Visitor) The dissolution of copper and nickel in ammonium carbonate solution was studied by techniques involving electrohemical anodic dissolution and ring-disc electrodes. The rate of oxidation of both copper and nickel by copper (11) was shown to be controlled mainly by diffusion to the surface. Variations in rate with changes in copper (11) concentration, agitation, pH, ammonia concentration, temperature, and copper (I) concentration were investigated and rationalized in terms of their effects on the electrochemical half-reactions involved. Evidence was found for the passivation of nickel and nickel-copper alloys of more than 50 per cent nickel.

The relationships revealed between ore hardness and specific energy consumed by crushing and grinding are described in the paper. A comparison of key technical and economical parameters of SAG and HPGR circuits is made, based on testing of several ore types for greenfield projects. The comparison of results make it possible to estimate efficiency of the technologies application, depending on ore hardness and taking into account potential risks for a circuit under design. An understanding of wear in systems conveying solids is extremely important from the standpoints of design and economics. The lifetime of any bulk solids-handling system depends on the type of solids present and the operating parameters of the transportation system. The relationship between wear in backfill pipelines on South African gold mines and the transportation system's operating parameters is well understood. However, the effect of the transported solids on the pipe wear is less well understood, because of an inability to characterize particle sharpness. The sharpness of the particles, together with their size and hardness, is responsible for the aggressivity of particles, or their ability to cause damage and wear. This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of particle sharpness. The results presented rank particles according to the sharpness of their surfaces.

The production of electrolytic manganese in South Africa by M. HARRIS, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Eng.) (Fellow), D. M. MEYER, Pr. Eng., B.Se. (Meeh. Eng.) (Visitor), and K. AUERSWALD (Visitor) The decision to construct the first electrolytic manganese plant in South Africa was important and farreaching. After evaluating the results of the pilot plant operation, the first South African producer, Electrolytic Metal Corporation (Emcor), established a plant in Krugersdorp. Initially, there were many process problems that had to be InvestIgated, and, after these had been solved and many operating parameters had been established, manganese was successfully produced. When the Delta Manganese plant in Nelspruit was planned, cognizance was taken of the fact that, if peak efficiencies were to be maintained, the process must be operated between fairly narrow parameters. Instrumentation was therefore installed to control the process automatically wherever possible. The main features of the Delta Manganese operation are outlined, with a brief description of each stage of the process from ore milling through to electrowinning and packing of the metal. It is concluded that much benefit can be obtained from further research work into process improvements and into the exact effect of certain variables on plant and current efficiency.

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

This study investigated the effect of surface roughness on Schmidt rebound hardness (RL). Four different test surfaces of rock samples were studied: natural, ground, cut surfaces, and core samples. There was significant variability of standard deviation based on the RL on the natural surface, which indicated high roughness of the rock surface, whereas surface polishing caused a significant decrease in standard deviation. ISRM and ASTM methods were compared to estimate unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for different testing surfaces. RL obtained from the cut surface was found to be more reliable than those obtained from other testing surfaces for the prediction of UCS; however, regression and ANOVA analyses revealed that the ISRM method gave a more accurate UCS estimation of rocks with highly rough surfaces. It was also shown that RL values obtained from a cut surface were significantly higher than those obtained from core samples. Therefore, a comparison between RL values obtained from core samples and cut surfaces was made based on previous studies. This study statistically showed that estimated UCS values are not statistically significant if Schmidt rebound tests are not performed on similar surfaces. In addition, the mineral grain sizes of the studied rocks, different testing surfaces compared with those in literature, and standard deviation from RL are evaluated and discussed. The Schmidt hammer technique is a rapid, inexpensive, and straightforward method for estimating UCS for preliminary assessment; however, roughness of the surface should be eliminated if variations are shown in the surface rebound hardness.

Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. The paper opens with a summary of the major factors responsible for spontaneous combustion in coal discards. These include heat arising from the oxidation of coal and pyrite, and from the weting of dry or oxidized coal and pyrite; and certain petrographic conditions leading to self-ignition of the coal such as low rank, the presence of a high proportion of reactive constituents, and the occurence of highly porous and botanicaly structured inertinite macerals, The analyses of 6 samples from 2 discard dumps in the Witbank coalfield are included, which show that, according to a three-grade classification of liability to spontaneous combustion, one dump is 'reasonably liable' and the other is 'most liable', It is pointed out that factors other than liability to self-ignition determine the possible utilization of such discards, and that the prevention of oxidation is of great importance if they are to be utilized and spontaneous combustion to be prevented,

"Physical and numerical modelling methods were followed to identify mechanism(s) for tundish slag entrainment in a bare tundish and one with a flow control device (FCD).The physical and numerical models made use of water and paraffin to model steel and slag respectively. Observations from the physical model showed that the steel-slag interface remains immobile in both cases. Entrained paraffin formed droplets approximately 1 mm in diameter. Results from both models (numerical and physical) showed that in both cases (bare and FCD case), areas of high entrained slag concentration exist near the inlet region. The entrained slag concentration decreases towards the tundish endwalls.Flow patterns and velocities tangential to the steel-slag interface from the numerical model showed that slag entrainment in both the bare tundish and tundish with a FCD possibly takes place via two mechanisms. First, the slag moves across the steel-slag interface via mass transfer; secondly small velocities tangential to the interface at depths greater than 10 mm below the interface carry the already ‘entrained’ slag into the bulk steel phase. These tangential flow patterns are dominant in the inlet region, hence the high concentration of entrained slag in this region. IntroductionThe tundish serves as the last metallurgical vessel through which steel passes before solidifying in the moulds. It is in the tundish that the last traces of non-metallic inclusions should be removed, otherwise the inclusions carry over to the moulds and cause defects in the steel product. In the tundish, the slag is less dense than the melt and thus resides on the top of the melt. The slag provides a sink into which the non-metallic inclusions float to and dissolve. The slag also protects the melt from air and heat loss. However, when slag is entrained in the melt as a result of increased turbulence or shearing at the steel-slag interface, slag can become a source of nonmetallic inclusions.Numerous studies on flow patterns in the tundish have been carried out since the introduction of the tundish. Strategic Ca-bearing minerals like scheelite and fluorite are usually separated by flotation, yet the separation is quite difficult due to their similar surface Ca active sites. Compared with the conventional strong collector sodium oleate (NaOL), lead nitrate-benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA), complex collector shows a better selectivity for scheelite, yet its high cost hinders its wide application. Therefore, a novel collector (Pb-BHA-NaOL complex) was initially developed in this work to overcome the abovementioned dilemma. The flotation results of a single mineral showed that Pb-BHA-NaOL had a better selectivity for scheelite than Pb-BHA. Under the conditions of sequential assembly of Pb, BHA and NaOL at the molar ratio of 240:120:1 and pH 9.0, selective separation of scheelite from fluorite could be achieved without adding any depressants. In addition, for the same preferred scheelite recovery, Pb- BHA-NaOL could also save approximately 20% Pb and BHA compared with Pb-BHA. The analyses of the zeta potential measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that Pb-BHA-NaOL showed stronger adsorption on scheelite relative to fluorite. Meanwhile, Pb-BHA-NaOL showed more adsorption modes and higher utilisation of Pb and BHA on scheelite than Pb-BHA, which was due to the accelerator, NaOL. The production of precipitated silica in the United States is about 145,000 tons of SiO2 and its prices vary significantly (from $ 1 to $ 4.5 per kg) depending on the area of its application. One of the most important parameters is its specific surface characterising dispersion (particle size and shape, presence or absence of pores), at a certain value of which the material acquires new properties and quality. At present, a technology has been developed for processing slag from phosphorus production to produce precipitated silica (‘white soot’) with a high specific surface and the possibility of extracting valuable components such as rare-earth metals (REMs) into a product enriched with them has been shown. However, the content of impurities in the deposited silicon dioxide, such as aluminum and iron, is above acceptable limits and may affect the quality of the final products. Therefore, along with the structure and specific surface, a very important characteristic of ‘white soot’ is the chemical purity of the material. In turn, calcium oxide occupies a significant share in the concentrate of rare-earth metals, which affects the content of ΣREMs oxides, which does not exceed 17.3 %. The low content of a valuable component may affect the feasibility of further processing. For the most complete utilisation of phosphorus slag, the authors propose a method for their acid processing, which allows for minimising the conversion of impurities to finely divided silica and collective concentrate, which will improve the quality of these products. Electrowinning is one of the nickel recovery processes from solutions obtained from the leaching of nickel sources. Every year significant amounts of nickel products are used in various industrial processes and daily life, such as catalysts or batteries, which are a valuable source of nickel for recovery. Nickel purity is also very important in the electrowinning process, because the amount of impurities in nickel such as sulphur, if greater than 100 ppm, make it unsuitable for use in catalysts and plating. Because sulfur is intrinsic to the sulphate electrowinning system, we needed to investigate parameters that can affect the quality and purity of nickel. In this regard, experiments were performed in static and circulating electrowinning processes. A monitoring and circulation system was designed and built to measure voltage, current and temperature as well as to circulate the solution in the system at a specified rate. It was then observed that nickel ion concentration, pH, using the circulation system and additives, were factors affecting the purity and quality of nickel, and in the best case the amount of sulphur in nickel was below 100 ppm. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flotation behaviour of unburned carbon in a cyclonic-static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC). The ash sample, collected from a power station in Guangdong province of China, was characterized by size analysis, X-ray diffraction, contact angle measurements, and X-ray fluorescence. The effect of the column flotation operating variables on the removal of unburned carbon from the fly ash was systematically studied. The feasibility of separating unburned carbon and ash was determined from the removal rate of unburned carbon (RUC) and loss on ignition (LOI). Within the range studied, the optimum diesel oil dosage was 1200 g/t, abies oil dosage was 600 g/t, pulp density was 20 per cent, superficial gas velocity was 1.4 cm/s, and circulating pressure was 0.20 MPa. The results indicate that the FCSMC technique is effective in removing the unburned carbon from the fly ash, which can be attributed to the generation of microbubbles and the continuous cyclonic circulation method. Under the optimized conditions, a cleaning ash with 2.13 per cent LOI and 94.21 per cent RUC was obtained.

As you know, there were a number of other deaths during the year, which were reported at previous General Meetings of the Institute. We are also pleased to welcome the Presidents of the Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, the Civil Engineers, the Joint Council of Scientific Societies, the Mine Ventilation Society, the South African Association of Consulting Engineers, the Association of Mine Managers, the Institute of Foundrymen, the Institute of Welding, the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers, Mine Surveyors, Production Engineers (London), and the Institute of Production Engineering. We are very glad, too, to have with us a visitor from England, Professor Raynor and Mrs Raynor. Professor Raynor is Professor of Metallurgy at Birmingham University, and a very well-known metallurgist in Britain. We also have with us the Chairman of the Ferro-Alloys Association. We are expecting the Chairman of our Witbank/Middelburg Branch, the Chairman of the Engineers' Liaison Committee, Pretoria, the Director of the Witwatersrand College of Technical Education, and, of course, our old friend, Mr Eric Boden, the Manager of A.S. and T.S. It is a very great pleasure to have with us a number of persons who will receive honorary Life Fellowship at this meeting, and there are some Gold Medal winners and winners of our Student Prizes. We have apologies from a number of people who are away on business, and unfortunately some are ill. But we are extremely pleased to see those of you who are here, and we are also very pleased to see so many ladies. We expect to see many more of them later this evening, at our Cocktail Party.
