This paper reports on the use of the MINSIM-D stress-analysis program for the modeling of two large seismic events that occurred on the same fault eleven years apart. It was found that the first event (magnitude 5,2) could not be ascribed to purely mining-induced stresses, indicating that the largest seismic events probably result from the interaction of mining-induced stresses with large scale tectonic stresses. However, the stress changes induced during eleven years of mining were found to be capable of generating sufficient excess shear stress (ESS) to be responsible for the second event (magnitude 4,3), The upper limit for the magnitude of purely mining-induced events was found to be approximately 4,3.

The optimal design of production phases and ultimate pit limit for an open pit mining operation may be generated using conventional or stochastic approaches. Unlike the conventional approach, the stochastic framework accounts for expected variability and uncertainty in metal content by considering a set of equally probable realizations (models) of the orebody. This paper evaluates the performance of a new stochastic network flow approach for the development of optimal phase design and ultimate pit limit using a gold deposit as the case study. The stochastic and conventional frameworks as considered here utilize the maximum flow and Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithms, respectively. The LG algorithm is restricted to considering an estimated (average-type) orebody model, while the stochastic maximum flow algorithm is developed to simultaneously use a set of simulated orebody realizations as an input. The case study demonstrates that, when compared to the conventional LG algorithm as used in the industry, the stochastic approach generates a 30 per cent increase in discounted cash flow, a21 per cent larger ultimate pit limit, and about 7 per cent more metal, while it maintains a consistency in phase size.

The reduction of fluxed and non-fluxed manganese, ores by ferromanganese silicide by W. P. CHANNON, B.Se. (Eng.), M.Sce. (Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sce. Hons., Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) In South Africa, medium-carbonferromanganese is produced by the silicothermic reduction of slags containing MnO. Because of its importance in the production of refined ferromanganese, a study was made of the reaction between a premelted South African Mamatwan manganese ore and various ferromanganese silicide reducing alloys, with and without fluxing agents. Because the reaction is highly exothermic, temperature appeared to have little effect on the rates of manganese transfer to the metal and silicon transfer to the slag, and an apparent equilibrium was rapidly approached. Limits were determined for the favourable effects of fluxing additions, and manganese recoveries were found to decline as the ratio of CaO to MgO decreased as a result of the addition of basic flux. The recovery of manganese passed through a maximum, and subsequently decreased for variations in the ratio of alloy to ore. The results obtained, when used in conjunction with other physicochemical data related to this slag-metal system, suggest optimum slag compositions for the efficient manufacture of medium-carbon ferromanganese from Mamatwan ore.

As a rule, removing waste rock at the beginning of the process improves the conditions for the flotation of minerals, and also reduces the operating costs of crushing, grinding and flotation. Lead-zinc ores in the Shalkiya deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan are classified as difficult for enrichment, but taking into account their significant reserves, they are one of the main potential ores for the production of lead and zinc. Under industrial conditions, for processing ores of the Shalkiya deposit, a selective flotation concentration scheme with the production of lead and zinc concentrates is recommended. However, according to the recommended scheme, it is not possible to obtain high-quality concentrates of lead and zinc, with high metal recovery. The paper presents the results of studies of preliminary gravitational enrichment of lead-zinc ore in the Shalkiya deposit. Based on the fractional analysis for the particle size range of -40+8 mm, Henri- Reingard enrichment curves were constructed, separation density (2730 kg /m3) was established to isolate the light fraction with the lowest possible lead and zinc content, and gravity enrichment indices (0.7-0.71) were determined. It was found out that when using gravitational enrichment of the original large-sized ore in the Shalkiya deposit, tails are released at the beginning of the technological process with a yield of up to 20% with the extraction of silica up to 30%, calcite up to 11% and carbonaceous matter up to 12%. As a result of the studies, it was found that the beneficiation of crushed lump ore could be conducted in heavy suspensions. One of the positive aspects of the use of gravitational enrichment is the reduction of energy costs for grinding the heavy fraction, which was experimentally proved in this article. A maximum of ten process streams (Merrill barren solutions) can be monitored sequentially with this on-line analyser, and gold concentrations as Iow as 0,005 mg/I can be determined. The design is a further development of the Tell-tale analyser constructed by the Corner House Laboratories during the period 1965-69. The barren solution is preconcentrated automatically by solvent extraction, the solvent being a solution of I per cent Aliquat 336 in di-isobutyl ketone. An aqueous-to-solvent ratio of 40: I is maintained. The extracted gold in the organic phase is determined by flame atomic absorption, each analysis taking approximately II minutes. The long-term reproducibility of the absorbance readings over a 24-hour period of repetitive sampling of four simulated process streams varied from 6,9 to 4,1 per cent relative standard deviation for gold concentrations of 0,0 I to 0,05 mg/I.

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig. AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.

The ARM 1100 was described in a paper presented at the 6th International Symposium on Mine Mechanization and Automation in September 2001. It started operation underground at Rowland Shaft in early 2002. This paper covers the results of those trials that resulted in more than 1 100square metres of UG2 being mined.

As exploration is time-consuming, costly, and risky, determination of the erosion surface of a metalliferous deposit before geophysical surveying and exploration drilling might be very helpful. Geochemical haloes can be used to determine whether the erosion surface is supra-ore or sub-ore and thus reduce the risk of exploration operations. The aim of this investigation is to determine the erosion surface of the North ROK porphyry deposit (NRPD) in northwestern British Columbia in Canada using linear productivity (LP), which is the content of an element defining the halo multiplied by the width of the halo. A total of 2045 soil samples from the B horizon were analysed using ICP-MS for 36 elements, including Cu, Mo, Pb, Zn, Au, As, Ag, Ni, Co, Fe, and Mn. The data-set was snalysed to obtain the statistical parameters and the elements Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn were chosen to calculate the linear productivity and the total linear productivity. These four elements were modelled using probability plots to identify and separate subpopulations in terms of anomalous haloes and background, including the threshold values of each subpopulation. The results of the probability plot modelling and thresholds values were then used to map the distribution of each element in a GIS to calculate the linear productivity. The total linear productivity indicated that the erosion surface is supra-ore. Finally, a 3D orebody model of the Cu, Mo, Pb, and Zn distributions was constructed using borehole data and used to validate the results.

In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached in order to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). This paper investigates the atmospheric leaching process, in order to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals; in particular Cu, Fe, Ni, and the PGMs in particular Ru and Ir with key process variables, acid concentration, copper concentration under oxidative leaching conditions. Higher initial acid concentration resulted in a higher copper, iron and nickel extractions, as well as higher leaching rates together with faster Cu, Ru, Ir precipitation occurring. On the other hand, a higher initial copper concentration resulted in more nickel but less iron being extracted. Keywords: PGM, converter matte, leaching, precipitation

"Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

This paper presents an evaluation of the effect that the mineral feed characteristics have on the metallurgical performance in an industrial flotation circuit. Variables such as mineralogy, particle size, solid content and mineral grade were evaluated using a flotation simulator, which was previously developed and validated using industrial data from different concentrators. The metallurgical performance was evaluated not only from the point of view of recovery and concentrate grade, but also by analysing less common variables such as froth carrying rate, froth and collection recovery, water recovery and others. Then, new data from the industrial flotation circuit was used to complement this analysis and evaluate the simulator predictability by comparing simulated and measured data. The results allowed for the quantification of the significant effect that mineralogy and particle size have on recovery and/or concentrate grade. Therefore, the grinding stage and flotation cells design become important factors to avoid a significant loss in metallurgical performance when feed mineral characteristics change in an industrial operation. In this context, an evaluation of cells design and arrangement should be performed to compensate the loss in recovery and concentrate grade in order to find an optimal operating condition. WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."
