The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.

Oxygen enrichment of the converter air at Rustenburg Platinum Mines by J. E. FORBES (Associate Member)* An account is given of the adoption of oxygen enrichment to accelerate converting operations and so permit the handling of larger quantities of feed materials. In addition to achieving its object, the use of oxygen-enriched air (6 per cent oxygen by volume) results in an increase in the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the converter off-gas. The slags have the same composition as those produced without oxygen enrichment, and the operation of the converters is easily controlled.

In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact

I have read with interest all the papers dealing with heat transfer and the setting of heat stress limits that have appeared during the past two decades. Scientifically speaking, most of them can be rated as being of a high standard, and some of them have been acclaimed internationally as masterpieces of logical and calculated reasoning. Weathering of ore minerals A short course on 'The Weathering of Ore Minerals and the Textural Evaluation of Base Metal Gossans' is to be given by Dr I.M. Reynolds in Grahamstown from 4th to 6th October, 1982.

Various methods for the beneficiation of minus 0,5 mm coal are examined briefly, and tests are described on a cyclone of 150 mm diameter operating with magnetite as the medium. It was found that, for sharp separations, at least 50 per cent of the magnetite should be finer than 1Oµm. At that size, the ash content of the product was about 7 per cent at yields of 59 to 64 per cent, and the loss of medium was reasonable (about I kg per ton of fines treated).

The objective of this paper is to present some results of laboratory experiments during the investigation of stress-strain characteristics of Carboniferous sandstones at dynamic loading. During these experiments increasing frequency and the constant amplitude of dynamic loading and/or constant frequency at different amplitude of dynamic loading were applied. Der Gegenstand dieses Artikels ist, irgendeine von Ergebnissen von Laborexperimenten bei Messung der Spannungs- und Deformationscharakteristik der Karbonsandsteine bei ihrer dynamischen Belastung vorzustellen. Im Laufe diesen Experimenten wurden entweder anwachsende Frequenzen bei konstanter Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung, oder gleiche Frequenzen bei variabler Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung verwendet. L'objectif de ce papier est présenter quelques résultats d'expériences de laboratoire pendant l'enquête de caractéristiques de la tension – deformation de grès Carbonifère à sollicitation dynamique. Ilmenite is the principal feedstock for producing TiO2 - used in paints, plastics and paper and the production of Ti metal. The Brahmaputra River system in Bangladesh represents a potentially new source of ilmenite concentrated within sandbar placer deposits and the current study presents results from beneficiation and characterisation studies conducted on Brahmaputra River Fe-Ti oxides. Characteristic of fluvial systems, the ilmenite concentration is low (~0.5 wt-%), however extensive annual dredging for waterway navigation provides the economic impetus to recover saleable ilmenite. The Fe-Ti oxide suite derived from magnetic fractionation comprises homogeneous ilmenite, titanohematite and hematite, although many grains exhibit complex exsolution within the (Ilm-Hem)ss series. The textural variability results in difficulty generating a pure ilmenite feedstock with the bulk concentrate typically being low in TiO2, containing 31.0 wt-%TiO2 and 62.7 wt-% (Fe2O3). Results are interpreted via an analysis of the implications for producing a commercial-grade ilmenite concentrate suitable for TiO2 production. PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

Mrazovka tunnel was excavated under one building whose subsurface space was not possible to reinforce against additional settlements induced by digging. In the presented contribution the risk analysis, warning levels and results of deformation measurements are described. Der Untergrund eines der Gebäude, unter dem der Tunnel "Mrazovka" ausgeschachtet wurde, war es nicht möglich, gegen nachträgliches Setzen zu versteifen, hervorgerufen durch die Untertunnelung. Im vorliegenden Beitrag sind Gefahrenanalyse, Grenzwerte und Ergebnisse von Deformationsmessungen beschrieben.

Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. Maximum depressant of pyrite will be the fraction size 75 μ, distilled water, without collector, 100 depressant. Keywords: Sulfide mineral, hydrogen peroxide, flotation, oxidation

Published parameters from the Mufulira copper in situ leach (ISL) in Zambia are used for order-of-magnitude flow-rate calculations for an envisaged gold ISL in back-filled Witwatersrand stopes. A successful leach operation requires that the porous medium, usually a sand, has a hydraulic conductivity in excess of 5 x10-7m/second (i.e. a permeability >50 millidarcies).Empirical evidence suggests that average linear velocities would be of the order of 60 m/day if the backfill has the grain size of a fine sand. The proposed gold lixiviant would probably be an alkaline or ammonium thiosulphate, not cyanide. The resultant sulphate-rich ground and drainage waters could probably be processed using existing purification techniques to produce gypsum and magnesium/calcium carbonate. Within the next 100 years it is inevitable that solution mining will find widespread application on the Witwatersrand, if not for gold extraction, then certainly for water remediation purposes.

Dimension stone mining is Increasing because of growing demand from the building and construction industries. Diamond wire saw cutting is a popular dimension stone mining technique around the world. Estimation of the production cost for this method is critical for these operations. n this research a production cost model was developed for the mining of granite using a diamond wire saw. Cost and production data were collected from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan for a 4.5-year period, and analysed to identify the cost components. Fuel (34%), labour (15%), consumables (40%), and maintenance (5%) were found to be the four major cost components in this operation. A regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating statistically significant variables was developed. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables costs. Finally, a production cost model based on the consumption cost of diamond wire is presented. The model was verified using actual production cost data, which indicated 95% (R2 = 0.95) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost values. The model may help field engineers in computing their dimension stone operational cost during the cutting phase.

SYNOPSIS Heart rates, oral temperatures, shovels/min and number of 3/4 ton cars/hour trammed over distances of up to 350 ft were measured in samples of 6-10 miners, engaged in tram-shovelling, at 76°, 84°, 86°, and 89°F wet bulb temperatures in stopes in a mine. From the results it has been concluded that a man with an 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity of about 2. 8 litres/min should be able to work: at 6 shovels/min, or 30 cars/shift per two men, at 76°-84°F; at 5 shovels/min, or 27 cars/shift per two men, at 86°F; and at 4 shovels/min, or 24 cars/shift per two men, at 89°F wet bulb air temperatures. INTRODUCTION A number of gold mines in South Africa still use tram-shovelling extensively. In this method of rock removal from the face of the stope, Bantu mine workers load rock into cars and tram the cars to a centre gulley where they are emptied. Previous studies from this Laboratory3 have shown that tram-shovelling is one of the most arduous tasks underground. The rate of energy expenditure is relatively high, being an oxygen consumption of about 1.4 litres/min over a period of some hours. In cool air conditions the upper limit to the rate of production of the well-motivated men employed on tram-shovelling has been shown1 to depend upon their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (as measured by their maximum oxygen intakes). However, in hot conditions the factors which set the upper limit to the rate of production are different. They are primarily the ability of the body to maintain a heat balance between the rate of heat production, due to physical work, and the hot atmosphere, so that the men do not develop excessively high body temperatures8. In order to give mine managers guidance on the 'optimum' rate of production of Bantu mine workers engaged upon tram-shovelling under different temperature conditions underground a study was carried out in a mine. The number of shovels per minute and cars per hour were recorded and heart rates and oral temperatures were measured throughout the duration of the shift on samples of 6-10 Bantu mine workers in different air conditions. The results of the study are recorded in this paper and conclusions are drawn as to the number of shovels per minute and cars per hour which Bantu mine workers of 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity should be able to produce at wet bulb air temperatures of between 76° and 89°F without either excessive fatigue or danger of heat illness.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. The Zinc Corporation of South Africa (Zincor) were hosts to about forty members of the Institute at their works in Springs on Friday, 25th April, 1986. The programme, designed to give an overview of the industry and the part played by Zincor, comprised an introductory talk, a technical talk, a tour of the plant, and a luncheon. Radioactive waste in arid regions A conference on the disposal of radioactive waste in arid areas will be held in Cape Town during the period 7th to 12th September, 1986. It is recommended that engineers and scientists avail themselves of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this relatively new multidisciplinary field of endeavor by attending the first ever conference of this nature to be held in South Africa. Iron control in hydro metallurgy The International Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometalurgy will be held at the 16th Hydrometallurgical Meeting, from 19th to 22nd October, 1986, in Toronto, Canada.

The Annual General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 30th August, 1972. Professor D. D. Howat (President) was in the chair. There were also present sixty-two Fellows, twenty-four Members, two Associates, three Students and eighteen Visitors, making a total of one hundred and nine. The President declared the meeting open at 4.05 p.m. OBITUARIES The President: It is my sad duty to announce the death of six members of this Institute. The first of these is Dr A. J. Orenstein, Honorary Life Fellow, who joined the Institute in 1916 and died on Seventh July. Dr Orenstein became almost a legendary figure in Medicine as a result of his work in the control and elimination of malaria during the digging of the Panama Canal and I believe he was actually engaged working until four days before his death. The other members who have died are: F. Meyer, died on 8th June; S. D. Loxton, Fellow, died on 13th May; J. Innes, Fellow, died on l0th January, 1970; O. B. Prentis, a Member, died on 4th June, and J. Brits, Associate, died on 27th June. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved may I ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence. I am happy to say that Minister Koornhof is an Honorary-Vice President of the Institute, and Minister Dillon is an Honorary Member. The presence of your goodselves, gentlemen, with us this afternoon, I am sure underlines the great significance which we believe both countries attach to the economic exploitation of the vast mineral resources of Southern Africa. For over 70 years, this Institute and its members have been making their contribution to this great task of mineral exploitation, and we feel that your presence with us today, is a token of the confidence of your governments in what this Institute and its members have been endeavouring to do. Also present with us today, is Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Chamber of Mines, and Honorary President of this Institute. I was going to say I welcome Mr Goode, but it is rather difficult to welcome a man to his own home, and this is the case with Mr Goode. He is a very distinguished and a very recent past president of this Institute and he remains now, as he has been for as long as I can remember, one of our most active and valuable members. This I think, ladies and gentlemen, is the second rather unique feature of this occasion this afternoon, because no one else can recollect an occasion on which the President of the Chamber of Mines was also a past president and an active member of our Institute. A special word of welcome, Mr Goode. Mr Tommy Gibbs, our Government Mining Engineer, is in a somewhat similar position as he is also a member and an old and valued friend of our Institute, - welcome to you, Mr Gibbs. Mention I think, must be made of the fact that we are very glad to have with us Dr A. J. A. Roux, President of the Atomic Energy Board, and Mr Stanley Craib, President of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies. Then, within the great family of the A.S. and T.S., we have the presidents, or the vice-presidents of I believe 13 of the constituent societies. Cecil John Irving was born on 13th March, 1902. He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham, and at the University of Birmingham, where he graduated in B.Sc. Mining Metallurgy in 1922, and in B.Sc. Metal Mining on 7th July, 1923. Johannesburg 1986 The biggest mining exhibition ever held in Africa and several allied international conferences are to be staged in Johannesburg in September of next year.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.
