The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. Dilution of ore has a major impact on economics of a mine. The magnitude of dilution depends on mining method, stope dimensions, reef and host rock quality, wall support and drilling accuracy. The main contributing factor is the presence of very weak graphitic shear band of varying thickness in and around the reef. The reef, at Obuasi, is generally steeply dipping and open stoping is the predominant mining method. The stability of the stope walls limits the stope dimensions. Various options for allowing larger stopes for higher productivity and limiting dilution are analysed. The most economic way is to reinforce the walls with systematic cablebolt supports. This option does not only add the support cost but also requires additional cost of access development. These conflicting requirements are continually being optimised at the mine for the economics of dilution control. La dilution du minerai à un impact majeure sur l’économie d’une mine. La quantité de matériel diluant le minerai dépend de la méthode d’extraction, de la dimension des chantiers d’abattage, de la qualité du filon et de la roche mère, du support des épontes et de la précision du forage de production. Le facteur principal qui contribue à la dilution est la présence d’étroites zones cisaillées qui contiennent du graphite ayant différentes épaisseurs à l’intérieur et autour du filon. Le filon, à Obuasi, est généralement à fort pendage et la méthode d’abattage principale est par chantier long-trous. La stabilité des épontes est le facteur qui détermine la dimension des chantiers d’abattage. Differentes options ont été analysées de façon à permettre de plus larges chantiers de manière à augmenter la productivité tout en limitant la dilution. Le moyen le plus économique est de renforcer les épontes avec des cables d’acier cimentés forés de façon systématiques. Cette option n’augmente pas seulement les coûts de support mais aussi les coûts de développement. Ces besoins contradictoires sont continuellement revisés à l’opération afin d’optimiser l’économique par le contrôle de la dilution. Verdünnung des Erzes hat eine spürbare Auswirkung auf die Ekonomie einer Grube. Die Größe der Verdünnung hängt von gewinnenmethode, von den Stopemaßen, von der Reef- und Wirtsfelsenqualität, von der Wandunterstützung und von der bohrengenauigkeit ab. Der beitragende Hauptfaktor ist das Vorhandensein einer sehr schwachen graphitic Scherbandes unterschiedlichen Stärke in und um der Reef. Der Reef, bei Obuasi, taucht im allgemeinen steil ab und geöffnete Aufstemmung ist die überwiegende gewinnenmethode. Die Stabilität der Wand begrenz die Stope grösse. Verschiedene Wahlen für das Erlauben der größeren Stopes für höhere Produktivität und das Begrenzen von Erzesverdünnung werden analysiert. Die ökonomischste Weise soll die Wände mit systematischen Kableankerbolzenunterstützungen verstärken. Diese Wahl addiert nicht nur die Kosten der Unterstützung aber erfordert auch zusätzliche Kosten fuer Zugangsentwicklung. Diese kontroversen Anforderungen werden fortwährend an der Grube analysiert um die Verdünnungkontrolle zu optimieren.

Pb–benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) (lead complexes of benzohydroxamic acid) exhibits high selectivity but low collecting efficiency in scheelite flotation. This paper reports the manner in which BHA and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were employed as ligands to coordinate with the lead ions to obtain a colloidal lead-group multiple ligand complex, i.e., the Pb–BHA–SDS, for improving the collecting efficiency of Pb–BHA. The flotation mechanism of Pb–BHA–SDS with respect to scheelite was investigated from the viewpoint of interface science based on the pure mineral flotation, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. The results showed that the BHA and SDS coordinated with Pb2+ to form novel leadgroup multiple ligand complexes, which are different from the traditional understanding associated with the mixed collectors. Pb–BHA–SDS was a better collector with stronger collecting ability and excellent selectivity in regard to a scheelite flotation than Pb–BHA. The addition of SDS to Pb–BHA enhanced the latter’s adsorption ability on the scheelite surface and improved the hydrophobicity of the collector’s nonpolar groups, rendering Pb–BHA–SDS as a more efficient collector at a low dosage. As the orebodies become more complex and lower grade, there is an increasing demand from crushing circuits for a finer product. When the product from a crushing circuit does not satisfy the requirements of the downstream processes, the cost of production increases. Thus, enhancing the performance of cone crushers through optimisation of their operating factors becomes important. One of the key factors affecting performance of cone crushers is the filling of the crushing chamber during the operation. The effect of varying the filling of the crushing chamber of a cone crusher was investigated. To assess the crusher performance, parameters such as crusher capacity, power utilisation, and reduction ratio were used. Extensive plant trials were conducted to obtain samples and operational data when the crusher chamber was 50% full (half-full) and 100% full, which is 300 mm above the top of the crusher chamber (super-choked condition). The results indicated a 62% difference in the crushing capacity when the crusher was operated in a super-choked condition compared to the half-full chamber level. In the super-choked condition, the size-specific energy at 12.7 mm was 20 % lower than that of the half-full condition. The Bond ball mill work index (BBWI) of crusher product indicated that the BBWI of the product of the super choked condition is 5.6% less than that of the product of half-full condition. This can be attributed to the generation of micro cracks in particles due to increase in the interparticle breakage when the crusher was operated in the super-choked mode. To have been invited to deliver this second CMMI lecture is an honour that I deeply appreciate. But, when I contrast my qualifications for delivering it, with those of Sir Alistair Framet, who delivered the inaugural lecturet in the series, or with those of other members of the Council, I feel rather an imposter. Far from having been a miner al my life, I have been associated with the mining industry on a part-time basis for a mere eight years. However, I encourage myself with two recollections. The first is the admission of the great Sherlock Holmes that he was often guided to the truth by the erroneous opinions expressed to him by Dr Watson. I may be able to perform a similar service for you. Secondly, I recall that, when I was a member of the Diplomatic Service, I was quite often asked to address representative gatherings of such professional people as the police, architects, dress designers, teachers, doctors, funeral directors, bird fanciers, and so on. Since it would have been pointless to pretend that I was expert in any of their businesses, I used to resort to the technique of announcing as my theme' A diplomat looks at the police' or whatever profession it was. They fortunately took it as a compliment that their profession was apparently one that diplomats spent a lot of time brooding over. They could also afford to laugh of any criticism that I might make because it could be ascribed to ignorance rather than informed malice. I hope that you will do the same.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. Based on an actual experiment used as an example, assessment of the surface deformation due to undermining, the extensive possibilities of using a 3-D physical model and application results in practice are demonstrated. Pillar design is a crucial aspect of underground mining engineering, as it directly impacts the safety, stability, and overall effectiveness of mining operations. In this paper we present a method to calculate pillar stability based on the strain criterion and pillar load inversion concept, which complements the empirical pillar strength formulae. Those formulae do not account for certain parameters that can affect the stability of the pillars, e.g. weak layers, changes in stress orientations due to mining, orebody dip, mining layout complexity, and the influence of regional stabilizing pillars. The approach presented here is not intended to replace the empirical method; rather, we suggest using it as the initial step in the pillar design process. This should be followed by iterative numerical modelling to study pillar behaviour, define pillar stability, and optimize the pillar design by considering site-specific and representative rock mass properties and criteria.

The Hishikari Gold Mine consists of epithermal vein type Au-Ag deposits, each of which has several veins standing almost in parallel each other and inclining 70 to 90 degrees. The veins have 1 to 3m widths and are extracted mainly by drifting and bench stoping with waste rock fill. The Hishikari has tried to optimise the stope dimensions by the Potvin’s Stability Graph Method, which is well known as an easy and effective tool to design appropriate stope dimensions. The method, however, has some limitations of application due to its simplicity so that it has been used only in limited cases. The authors developed a new numerical approach, based on 2D FEM solu-tion for the stability analysis. As a result, it has been possible to solve the Hishikari situation. The authors also introduce the concept of the design approach and compare the results obtained by us-ing the approach with the database of the Stability Graph Method for validation. La mine d’or Hishikari se compose de gisements d'Au-AG avec des types de filons épither-maux dont chacun a plusieurs veines qui sont presque parallèle les unes par rapport aux autres et sont inclinées de 70 à 90 degrés. Les veines ont de 1 à 3 m de largueur et elles sont principalement extraites en creusant et en abattant des bancs de roches encaissantes. Hishikari a essayé d’optimiser les dimensions du chantier d’exploitation avec la méthode de graphique de stabilité de Potvin, bien connue comme un outil facile et efficace pour avoir des dimensions de chantier d’exploitation appropriées. Toutefois, la méthode a certaines limites d’application dues à sa sim-plicité de sorte qu’elle a été utilisée seulement dans des cas limités. Les auteurs ont développé une nouvelle approche numérique, basée sur la solution 2D FEM, pour l’analyse de stabilité. Par conséquent, il a été possible d'expliquer la situation de Hishikari. Les auteurs présentent le concept de l'approche et ils comparent les résultats donnés en l'employant avec la base de données de la méthode de graphique de stabilité pour la validation. Die Hishikari-Goldmine besteht aus Au-Ag-Ablagerungen mit epithermalen Adern, die jeweils mehrere Adern aufweisen, die mit einer Neigung zwischen 70 und 90 Grad nahezu parallel zueinander verlaufen. Die Adern haben eine Breite von 1 bis 3 Metern und werden überwiegend durch Vortrieb von Stollen und Bergversatz abgebaut. Hishikari hat versucht, die Abmessungen des Abbauorts durch das Potvins Stabilitätskurvenverfahren zu optimieren, das als einfaches und effizientes Mittel für die Erzielung angemessener Abmessungen des Abbauorts bekannt ist. Das Verfahren weist jedoch aufgrund seiner Einfachheit einige Anwendungsbeschränkungen auf, so dass es nur in einigen Fällen benutzt worden ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben die Autoren einen neuen numerischen Ansatz entwickelt, der hinsichtlich der Stabilitätsanalyse auf der 2D-FEM-Lösung beruht. Dadurch wurde es möglich, das Problem von Hishikari zu lösen. In diesem Dokument stellen die Autoren die Grundlagen des Ansatzes vor und vergleichen die erzielten Resultate durch Benutzung der Datenbank des Stabilitätskurvenverfahrens zur Validierung.

Kumba Iron Ore?s Zandrivierspoort (ZRP) magnetite-haematite project aims to mine and beneficiate a magnetite resource with low contaminant levels to produce from 1 Mt/a to 2.5 Mt/a product, which will be either a concentrate, micro-pellets for direct reduction, or blast furnace pellets. Anglo American Technical Solutions Research conducted a number of piloting campaigns to validate the process design flow sheet, demonstrate process performance, and to generate data for use as a design basis. Secondary to this, the pilot plant was to produce approximately 7 t of magnetite-haematite concentrate with low enough SiO2 to be used as feedstock for pelletizing studies. The pilot plant achieved 34.2% mass yield, at 69.0% Fe, 2.2% SiO2, from an IsaMill grind of 80% -45 µm. This product quality will compare favourably to other leading direct reduction (DR) pelletizing concentrates. However, two-stage comminution to 80% -75 µm and beneficiation of ZRP ore will produce a blast furnace (BF) quality pelletizing concentrate, indicative quality being 67.6% Fe and 4% SiO2, at higher mass yields. An economic evaluation between producing a DR and a BF pelletizing concentrate will have to be conducted prior to finalizing the concentrate production flow sheet..

Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

The factors affecting haul truck tyre performance and the effectiveness of the management system at Rossing Uranium Mine were investigated with the aim of increasing tyre performance in terms of running hours until failure. The main objectives were to identify the types of tyre failure, their causes and cost implications, and evaluate the effectiveness of the management system. A site severity survey, weight study, and TKPH studies were conducted to determine the pit conditions, and an analysis of failed tyres carried out. The results showed that tyre performance at the mine has declined from 2009 to date, and the increase in lost value amounted to R5.7 million in 2012 alone. The main cause of tyre failure is loose rocks in the pit. The present management system in the load and haul department is not effective enough due to operational constraints it is facing.

Because geostatistics together with block modeling has not been studied in detail before in the rock mechanics, a two-year research program to investigate the practical use of geotechnical modeling was started in Finland in 1999. According to research work results block modeling gives good estimate of overall rock mass quality but it can not identify individual structures like faults and narrow weakness zones. Weakness zones and faults should be mapped from drill cores, surface mapping, geophysical methods etc. and manually generate 3-D structural model. Rock mechanical 3-D modeling can be used for preliminary stope dimensioning and preliminary reinforcement design. Detailed design needs rock quality mapping from drifts during excavation work. La géostatistique associée à la modélisation par blocs n'ayant pas été étudiée en détail jusqu'à présent dans la mécanique des roches, un programme de recherche sur deux ans visant à examiner l'utilisation pratique de la modélisation géotechnique a été lancé en Finlande en 1999. D'après les résultats des travaux de recherche, la modélisation par blocs donne une bonne estimation de la qualité générale de la masse rocheuse mais elle ne permet pas d'identifier les structures individuelles comme les failles et les zones géologiquement dégradées étroites. Ces zones et failles devraient être cartographiées à partir de carottes de sondages, d'une cartographie de surface, de méthodes géophysiques, etc. et générer manuellement un modèle de structure 3D. La modélisation mécanique des roches en 3D peut être utilisée pour un dimensionnement de la chambre et un plan d'armature préliminaires. Un plan détaillé nécessite l'élaboration d'une cartographie de la qualité des roches des galeries lors des travaux d'excavation. Da man früher Geostatik und Block-Modellieren in der Gebirgsmechanik nicht detailliert untersuchte, wurde 1999 in Finnland ein zweijähriges Untersuchungsprogramm in Angriff genommen. Aufgrund der Untersuchungsergebnisse ergibt das Block-Modellieren eine gute Beurteilung der gesamten Gebirgsmassenqualität, kann jedoch einzelne Strukturen wie Verwerfungen und kleine Schwachzonen nicht identifizieren. Schwachzonen und Verwerfungen müssen demnach aus Bohrkernen, oder mit Hilfe von Oberflächenkartierung, geophysischen Verfahren usw. ermittelt und danach ein 3-D-Strukturmodell manuell erstellt werden. Felsmechanisches 3-D-Modellieren ist für die vorbereitende Abbaudimensionierung und für die vorbereitende Bewehrungsplanung verwendbar. Ein detaillierter Entwurf benötigt die Kartierung der Gesteinsqualität aus den Gesteinsstrecken während der Ausbrucharbeiten.

The past ten years or so have seen many changes in the methods and approach adopted for projects in the metallurgical and mining industry in South Africa. These changes have led to an increased use by operating companies of the project and construction management services offered by engineering contracting companies. For a variety of reasons, this development has been slower in the metallurgical industry than in other areas of production, but that industry is also now showing an increasing trend in this direction.
