Bahrain's oil revenue increased from $337 million2 in 1916 to $378 million in 1977. Despite the increase in value, petroleum receipts made up only 584 of all Government income in 1877, compared with 74% in 1976 and 83% in 1975. Bahrain became an oil producer in 1932 with the discovery of the Awali oilfield, and since that time, the Awali oilfield has produced over 600 million barrels of crude oil. Awali production in 1977 was 21.2 million barrels. Bahrain shares the revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf north of Bahrain, equally with Saudi Arabia. Revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield was approximately $179 million or 47% of oil revenues in 1977. Output from the Abu Safah oilfield was 48 million barrels, an increase of nearly 30% over 1976 output. The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO). the nation's only oil-producing company, was owned 40% by California Texas Oil Corp. (CALTEX and 60% by the Govern¬ment. The Government established Bahrain National Oil Co. (BANOCO) in 1976 to administer the Government's share of BAPCO, oversee exploration concessions, and manage domestic marketing of petroleum products. The Government announced its intention to acquire 100% control of crude oil and natural gas production. CALTEX was to retain complete control of the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery near Sitrah.

This report has been prepared in response to a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Fairbanks Alaska District Office that the Bureau of Mines quantitatively assess the potential supply of minerals from undiscovered deposits in the White Mountains National Recreation Area (WMNRA) and the western part of the North Steese National Conservation Area (SNCA) in Alaska. The assessment will be used to assist in future land-use decision-making. Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for the WMNRA and the SNCA were approved by the BLM in 1986. These plans imposed significant restrictions on new mineral development in the two areas. The level of public concern regarding these actions, especially on the part of the mining industry, has spurred BLM to seek additional information about the potential supply of minerals from the two areas with assistance from the Bureau of Mines. The assessment focuses on an area within the WMNRA and the SNCA which has been administratively closed to mineral entry. The study area encompassed approximately 1.24 million acres and included all of the WMNRA and the western portion of the North SNCA (fig. ES-1). Three quantitative estimates of the potential supply of minerals from the study area were developed: 1) For all lands in the study area, assuming that they are open to mineral entry-the baseline analysis; 2) For those lands which have been closed to mineral entry; and 3) For eleven prospective mineral activity areas, assuming that all are open to mineral entry.

This study is an appraisal of the feasibility of recovery and the possible chemical and physical uses of the limestone from the Greenbrier Formation in western West Virginia. Data on minability, occurrence, quality, and markets were obtained from published and unpublished sources and by a limited mail survey combined with personal contacts. The estimated costs of recovery by deep mining techniques are considerably higher than competitive surface and shallow subsurface operations. Compositional in formation available for this study was limited but indicated the suitability of the limestone for most physical uses and some chemical process uses in appraisal of the uses and demand reveals that immediate markets may be difficult to establish, but for some uses long-term prospects may be encouraging, especially if the quality of limestone would be suitable for lime manufacture or use as metallurgical fluxstone.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines constructed a large-scaJe facility to study the self-heating of a large coal mass under conditions that simulate a gob area of a mine. The insulated coal chamber can hold up to 13 short tons (st) of coal and is provided with a forced ventilation system and computer-controlled temperature and gas measurement systems to monitor the heat and mass transfer phenomena that occur in the coalbed. Three experiments were completed with high-volatile C bituminous coals that exhibited high spontaneous combustion potentials in laboratory-scale tests. In the first two tests, a sustained heating was not achieved. In the third test, temperatures throughout the coalbed increased steadily from the start, with thermal runaway occurring near the center of the coalbed after 23 days. The thermal reaction wne then moved toward the front of the coalbed. The results of these tests showed that the self-heating of a large coal mass depends not just on the reactivity of the coal, but also on the particle size of the coal, the freshness of the coal surfaces, the heat-of-wetting effect, and the availability of O2 at optimum ventilation rates.

This chapter presents an overview of fatal and nonfatal injuries reported to MSHA during 1986-1995. Reportable injuries follow the criteria for reporting specified in 30 CFR 50. These criteria are listed in appendix A. The data used for these analyses came from the MSHA accident, injury, and illness data closeout files for the years 1986-1995. The MSHA data are described in appendix A and methods used in data analysis in appendix B. There may be slight discrepancies between the figures presented here and other presentations of MSHA data for the following reasons: (1) injuries to nonemployees have been excluded from analysis; and (2) injuries identified by MSHA after the files were closed out are not included. Within the MSHA data, there are differences in reporting requirements for operators and contractors. Contractors are required to report only those injuries that occur during certain categories of work (described in appendix A). For this reason, data on injuries among employees of operators and contractors in the MSHA database should not be considered directly comparable. As discussed in the "Introduction," the MSHA data on fatal injuries differ from the CFOI data (chapter 1) because of varying definitions used for the mining industry. As compared to the CFOI data, MSHA data exclude injuries that occurred off of mine property and include injuries occurring at mills and processing plants on mine property. Tables 4-1 through 4-9 and figure 4-1 provide comparisons of injury frequencies and rates among the commodities. These comparisons are followed by sections 4A through 4E, which provide more detailed tables and figures for each commodity separately. The method used to calculate injury rates is described in appendix B. Since denominator data for occupations (lob titles) were available for 1986 only, estimates of rates by occupation for the entire 10 year period are based on extrapolation from 1986 data. For this reason, estimates of injury by occupation should be interpreted with caution. Fatal Injuries A total of 1,078 fatal on-the-job injuries were reported to MSHA during the 10-year period 1986- 1995. The average annual fatal injury rate for all commodities combined during this period was 30.9 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Mine operators accounted for 908 (84%) of the fatalities and had an average annual fatal injury rate of 28.2 per 100,000. While mine contractors comprised only 16% (n = 170) of the total number of fatalities, their average annual fatal injury rate was 2.3 times higher than that of mine operators (65.0 per 100,000). Table 4-1 presents the number and rates of fatal injuries by commodity for operators and contractors. Contractors in metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand and gravel are grouped together, since MSHA data on employment were not available for rate calculations for these commodities separately. The highest average annual fatality rate for the period, 66.5 per 100,000, occurred among metal and nonmetallic mineral mining contractors, followed closely by coal contractors (63.1 per 100,000). Among mine operators, the highest average annual fatal injury rate was in coal (38.9 per 100,000); the lowest was in nonmetal (14.3 per 100,000). Table 4-2 shows the average annual fatal injury rate by type of operation for each commodity for mine operators only. Of commodities with underground mines, all except stone had higher fatality rates at underground than at surface operations of these mines. The highest fatality rate for any operation occurred in surface operations at underground stone mines (124.5 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers). Stone had the second highest fatality rate for underground operations at underground mines (77.9 per 100,000). The highest rate for underground operations at underground mines occurred in metal (87.6 per 100,000). Table 4-3 shows the number and rate of fatal injuries by U.S. Bureau of the Census occupational groups (described in appendix D) for the 10 occupation-commodity groups with the highest fatal injury rates. These data should be interpreted with caution because the denominator used in calculating the rates was based on an extrapolation from data for the year 1986 only, as described in appendix B. Extractive occupations are represented in this group for three commodities: coal, metal, and sand and gravel. Construction trades are included for coal, sand and gravel, and nonmetal. The distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and work activity for mine operators is presented in table 4-4. A description of the work activity categories is in appendix C. Overall, the leading work activity at the time of injury was using or operating tools and machinery (26.4%) followed by constructing, repairing, and cleaning (24.0%), vehicular operations (18.8%), and materials handling (12.6%). The distribution varied by commodity. The largest percentage of fatal injuries occurred while operating tools and machinery in both coal and stone; during vehicular operations in metal; and during constructing, repairing, and cleaning activities in nonmetal and sand and gravel. Table 4-5 shows the distribution of fatal injuries by commodity and MSHA accident classification for mine operators. A description of the MSHA accident classifications appears in appendix E. In recent years, thermodynamic data have been used to a greater degree than ever by the chemical and metallurgical engineer as a means of predicting and controlling chemical reactions. To satisfy the spiraling demand for basic physical data needed for the calculations, the Bureau of Mines is studying the heat capacities of a variety of chemical compounds at high and low temperatures. This paper is one of a series presenting such data. The heat capacities of two alkaline earth compounds, strontium bromide and strontium nitrate, were measured in a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. in an adiabatic calorimeter and at temperatures of 300° to about 1,200° K. in a Bunsen ice calorimeter. The construction and operation of the calorimeters are discussed in other reports.3 4 The heat-capacity data presented in this report were extrapolated to 0° K., and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated and tabulated at even 10-degree intervals. The enthalpy data were fitted with algebraic equations by applying the method of least squares; calculations a£ heat-capacity values, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were made at even 50-degree intervals. The heat and entropy of fusion of strontium bromide were calculated from the enthalpy measurements.

Under contract from U. S. Bureau of Mines, Harza Engineering Company in cooperation with Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, conducted a ground control study of two mechanized longwall panels at the Federal Number 2 Mine. The mine is located in Northern West Virginia, and the coal is mined from the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The prime objective of the study was to collect data which will aid in the proper selection of the longwall supports system and to control the entry caving problem. Instruments installed in the mine were borehole pressure cells, convergence recorders, roof sag recorders, horizontal roof strain indicators, differential floor movement systems, and lateral roof and floor movement systems. Instruments installed on the surface, above the instrumented longwall panels, consisted of slope indicator system, vertical bed settlement probe system and shear displacement detecting system. A comprehensive surface subsidence study was conducted in conjunction with the instrumentation. In addition to the instrumentation and monitoring, special tests were conducted to determine the bearing capacity of the roof and floor rocks, in situ modulus of coal, roof and floor rocks, and response of borehole pressure cells to ground stress. Cores of coal measure rocks were collected for the physical property tests. Face observations were made to detect various roof behavior parameters under the different jack setting pressures. This report essentially describes the instrumentation work, special tests and presents the data collected.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

This is the final report for Research Contract No. 00101300 (Min. 34) granted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to the University of Idaho Mining Research Bureau. The research project is entitled "Development of Improved Ventilation Technology for Non-coal Mines and Other Underground Excavations.' The duration of the project was six calendar months, from 16 April to 16 October 1970. The budgeted cost was $34,867.00 of which $31,953.00 was to be furnished by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The sequence of reporting that follows is to state the objectives as contracted, outline the program of investigation, highlight briefly the important technological factors peculiar to vein-type metal mine ventilation, and describe the normal methods of control. This is followed by the results achieved by the survey, and an itemization of the observed deficiencies in current technology. There follows a section dealing with the adopted Federal Regulations.

This report presents the results of studies of Kennecott Copper Corporation's tailings embankment at Magna, Utah. The stability studies described were performed on only one cross section of the embankment, utilizing; data obtained from drilling, sampling, and testing, which was limited in nature. The main objective of the data collection was to provide background information to support the overall research effort. Because of this limited scope, it is not possible to evaluate the degree of safety or adequacy of the embankment or disposal system, and the information and data contained in the body of this report must be judged in that light. The first part of this report contains discussion of site geology and seismicity, pertinent information on the refuge disposal system, a discussion of the tailings materials characteristics, a summary of the engineering analyses, and A bibliography. The second tart (appendices) contains basic geologic and engineering data supporting the discussions in the first part of the report.

Despite the extensive use of fluorphlogopite, investigators do not agree as to its exact melting temperature. Data on other fluormicas and on related fluorsilicate systems are largely nonexistent. A knowledge of the melting temperature is necessary for the effective synthesis and use of fluorphlogo¬pite or other fluormicas. The increasing use of two- and three-mica systems to yield polycrystalline ceramics has made more urgent the need for melting temperature information concerning these other fluormicas. This report is part of a program by the Bureau of Mines to synthesize large-size or large-crystal fluorphlogopite and develop a usable reconstituted fluormica sheet. The melting temperature of fluorphlogopite, K2Mg6A12Si6020F4, was found to be 1,383° ±2° C. This temperature was found by studying single crystals of fluorphlogopite, heating behavior of glass of fluorphlogopite composition, and the actual crystallization of fluorphlogopite from a melt that had been heated above 1,430° C. The formation of forsterite or norbergite was directly proportional to the loss of volatiles during the experimentation. Many trials revealed that the only reliable seal was a thick platinum sheet with welded seams. If no volatiles were lost, neither norbergite nor forsterite were formed; fluormica was then the only product. Excellently formed crystals of forsterite with an optical sign different from ordinary forsterite were obtained during the single crystal melting experiments. These crystals resulted from a slow loss of volatiles. A congruent melting of fluorphlogopite is indicated by the data of this report; however, incongruency within a small temperature range is not precluded. A more refined method using phase equilibria-quench methods would be necessary to settle the question absolutely.

This paper, covering Chaffee, Fremont, Gunnison, Lake, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties, Colo., is the second of a series reporting on the tungsten potential of the Colorado region. The assembled information was obtained by examination of some properties, personal contacts with owners, and access to unpublished reports by other engineers. The tungsten-bearing areas of the 7 counties cover approximately 400 square miles and are in 10 distinct areas, which vary in size (fig. 1) from 1 square mile up to 290 square miles. The tungsten mineral wolframite was discovered by a man named Hackay near Dale on the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad in the early 1900's, and wolframite and hubnerite were noted at Climax and the adjacent areas in Lake and Summit Counties at an early date, but no records of shipment from any of the areas are available before World War II. It is not known when scheelite was first discovered, but it was recognized in the Stockton mine during World War I. In the counties listed 64 properties are known to contain tungsten; of these, 18 have had some commercial output, although only 3 of them produced in 1953. The total production through 1953 is estimated at 115,000 short-ton units of tungsten trioxide. In 1953 by far the major portion came from the Climax mine.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors -- geometrical, geological, mechanical, or procedural which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily influences the loading function. The geometrical factors -- the dimensions of the work area in relation to the dimensions of the mining machine - were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful in operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

This paper is one of a series describing the mineral resources of the Nation, including location, history, production, ownership, geologic setting, and mining methods for most of the known manganese deposits in New Mexico, With few exceptions these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writer. Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos. (See fig. 1.)

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

Previous research conducted for the USBM by Penn State personnel (Grant GO-101729) found that a need existed to physically model a typical a-c/d-c coal mine section electrical system. Its purpose would be to permit preliminary evaluations of electrical problem solutions prior to launching full-scale investigations. Such use can result in greater flexibility than afforded by present computer models. Furthermore, numerous problems, which would be virtually impossible to incorporate in a computer model at this time, are more easily analyzed with physical simulation. The development of this system is now proceeding at the USBM's Bruceton Research Facilities. However, electrical specifications of scaled down components for its construction are required. This project is a result of that need and has been funded as an extension to Grant GO-133077. The following report covers these specifications. Iron ores associated with the Oriskany formation extend from the West Virginia border to the southwestern corner of Virginia. The deposits have been mined at many places, and the district is credited with the production of approximately 13,000,000 tons of ore to 1925, when mining operations ceased (fig. 1). The Oriskany iron-ore deposits occur in the Alleghany Mountains throughout their extent in the State. The name Oriskany was originally given to the limonite ore that was supposed to occur in the Oriskany sand-stone. At present, the name applies to all iron-ore deposits occurring in the lower part of the Devonian shale, Oriskany sandstone, and Helderberg limestone. The principal ore-bearing minerals are goethite and limonite. This report deals principally with the occurrences in Allegheny, Bath, Botetourt, and Craig Counties, Va. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project to develop the reserves of the area in November 1943; and continued until December 1944. Work started near Oriskany and extended northeast for nearly three-fourths of the area of the more important deposits. During the program 163 holes were drilled, totaling 11,651 feet; 256 feet of prospect tunnels were driven; 1,346 samples were collected; beneficiation tests were performed; and bulldozer trails and trenches wore excavated. The work served to delimit and appreciably extend the reserves of several areas. Analyses of channel samples are -given in appendix A, and diamond-drill and churn-drill hole logs and sample analyses are given in appendixes B and C, respectively.

A research program to aid development of better and more efficient methods for producing petroleum and increasing its ultimate recovery from underground formations is an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines on conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Economic, efficient production of recoverable oil and gas from a reservoir depends to a great extent upon the best and most accurate information that can be obtained from a study of the reservoir rock and its fluid contents. Information on oil and water saturation is pertinent and essential in wildcat, extension, and pool wells for good reservoir operations and prediction of performance. This report presents results of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of core recovery and degree of drilling-fluid contamination occurring during cable-tool coring operations using oil-base mud. Representative core samples were obtained from 6 major oil-producing sands in 8 fields of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Field-mixed, oil-base drilling mud was used for the first coring test, and lightweight, premixed oil-base mud, with an organic chloride tracer added, was used in coring eight other wells. Tracer analyses were made to determine contamination of core by drilling-fluid filtrate. Core analyses, including oil and water content and minimum interstitial water-saturation tests, were made on selected core samples to compare and evaluate water saturations determined by the two methods.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:
