This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center during fiscal year 1969 (July 1: 1968, to June 30, 1969) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in the outside press. These publications are referenced in part 1 by underlined numbers in parentheses. Other publications, which are not abstracted, are cited in footnotes throughout the paper. This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

Reconnaissance investigations were made of 129 iron occurrences in Arizona to determine their extent, attitude, and potential; character samples were analyzed to determine their quality and impurities; and pioneer metallurgical investigations were made on character samples to present their metallurgical problems. Some factors influencing past and potential western iron markets are discussed. The location, features, qualities, extent, and potential of iron occurrences and some associative resources--limestone and dolomite, coal, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water are discussed. The most abundant iron minerals are magnetite and hematite. The higher grade deposits are extensive contact-metamorphic or pyrometasomatic replacements of calcareous Paleozoic to Proterozoic rocks associated with intrusives. Large low-grade deposits of great potential are present as Precambrian taconite, semitaconite-, and jaspilite-like iron formations of magnetite-hematite. Iron occurs also as low-grade concentrations of magnetite in extensive alluvial deposits. Nonferrous metallurgical slags, nearly 100 million tons, are considered a potential source of iron. Various accessory elements are associated with the iron minerals and these pose metallurgical and economic problems.

The Bureau of Mines has prepared, as circumstances have dictated, a series of schedules setting forth the minimum requirements that various types of equipment should meet to be considered safe and satisfactory for use under certain hazardous or unhealthful conditions. These schedules cover a wide variety of devices ranging from explosives to electrically operated mine locomotives. This paper discusses the functions and operations of schedules under which respiratory protective devices are tested and approved. It emphasizes that the aim of the Bureau respirator-approval system is to make available to the public respirators that meet definite performance requirements. The responsibility of the respirator manufacturer in pre-testing the device and in maintaining its quality after it is approved are explained. Aid is provided for the user in selecting the proper device for specific application, and a plea is made for better education of all concerned in the proper use of the devices. DISCUSSION Provisions have been made for testing and approving the following types of respiratory protective devices: Self-contained breathing apparatus,2/ supplied-air respirators,3/ gas masks,4/ dispersoid respirators,5/ and chemical-cartridge respirators.6/ These devices are tested at the Central Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh, Pa. Self-contained breathing apparatus is tested by personnel of Health and Safety District B; other types of respirators are tested by the Branch of Health Research.

Turquoise is prized solely for its attractive color ; it is dull and opaque , wholly lacking the brilliant luster that is the chief attraction of transparent gems . The best quality of turquoise is blue , of a soft and pleasing tone , like the color of clear sky but distinctive , as indicated by use of the term " turquoise blue . " Often its value is lessened by a greenish cast ; in many stones the green predominates . A large proportion of the turquoise that is mined is utterly worthless , so inferior and unattractive is its color . The finest grade of turquoise comes from Persia , notable from Nishapur . Large quantities have been mined in the Southwestern States of the United States , and less important deposits have been found in a number of the other States .

Work has been carried out in the development and testing of carbon monoxide (CO) detection devices which use silica-gel impregnated with metal salts. If carbon monoxide is present, the ?detection gel? (the treated silica-gel) changes from a yellow to a blue-green or blue color. The detection gel "regenerates", i.e., returns to its original yellow color, within 4-24 hours after removal from air containing CO. The detection gel exhibits a threshold of CO response which can be adjusted over a wide range of CO concentrations, typically from 50-500 ppm in air. The preparation of detection gel using salts of palladium, molybdenum and copper is described. Also reported are the results of testing the detection gel&apos;s response to carbon monoxide under varying conditions of temperature and humidity and in the presence of some potentially interfering gases. Low levels of hydrogen sulfide (~ 5 ppm)1 nitrogen dioxide (< 7 ppm), and acetylene (> 200 ppm) were found to affect the detection gel. Temperature and humidity were also found to affect the detection gel&apos;s response. Increasing temperature shortens the gel?s response time while increasing the humidity delays the gel?s response and alters the threshold of the gel. A brief discussion of the further research and development necessary to stabilize the detection gel?s desirable characteristics is included. Descriptions of testing equipment and procedures are covered in detail.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a brief laboratory study on the 10-mm diam Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone to investigate (1) whether high wind speed (>300 ft/min), or sampler inlet orientation with respect to wind direction, can introduce errors when sampling respirable dust, and (2) whether any such errors can be reduced by using an inlet shield. Being preliminary in nature, the study was not structured to produce definitive results, but rather to discern likely trends and to indicate whether or not a more in-depth study of the problem is warranted. Photometric mass sensing measurements suggested that as the wind velocity increased, the cyclone sampling directly into the high-velocity airstream tended to oversample, relative to the cyclone sampling in a low-velocity airstream. Orientation of the sampler introduced measurable differences in sampling efficiency at higher wind velocities. A shield placed around the cyclone diminished the effects of wind velocity and sampler orientation on sampler performance. Results of this work offer sufficient evidence to substantiate the need for a more in-depth study.

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. The safety record of the coal-mining industry in 1968 worsened appreciably .in fatality experience but was slightly better in nonfatal-injury experience. Work fatalities in 1968 totaled 311 and occurred at a frequency rate of 1.33 per million man-hours or worktime. The fatality total was 89 higher, and the rate of occurrence was 45 percent higher than the corresponding figures of 222 fatal injuries with a frequency rate of 0.92 in 1967. The worsened fatality record in 1968 resulted primarily from two major disasters (a single accident which results in the death of five men or more) which killed 87 men, nine in one and 78 in the second. The total of 9,639 nonfatal injuries was the lowest annual figure in complete records back to 1930. The frequency rate of 41.12 nonfatal injuries per million man-hours of worktime for 1968 was the second lowest annual rate of occurrence. The severity rate of all injuries, 10,513 days lost or charged per million man-hours, and the average severity, 248 days lost per injury, in 1968 were the worst annual data in the series started in 1944. Total worktime of 234.4 million man-hours and coal output of 553.3 million tons in 1968 were, respectively, 3 and 1 per- cent lower than in 1967.

Laboratory performance of mercury filled current limiting devices (CLD) used for high speed switching of DC circuits (600 volts and below, up to 1000 amperes) using a system involving a parallel connected vacuum switch with CLD and an additional series connected vacuum switch was verified in USBM Contract #HO 357079. This report details analytical work and field experimental tests to predict and control voltage surges associated with the high switching speed associated with the switching system. It also details tests conducted to demonstrate the fault current limiting ability of the CLD. Problems associated with designing a fault current limiting system are discussed.

In a previous report,6 results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.l cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied. from no openings to a maximum of 48. The results showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

[This investigation of the refractory properties of seven Pacific Northwest chrome ores and concentrates has shown that five of the ores and one of the concentrates are suitable for making refractories and that all may be used in combination with high-grade chromite. The specific objectives of the investigation were to determine the inherent physic al and chemical characteristics, to shapes using each of the chrome ores and concentrates, to compare the refractory qualities of the laboratory-prepared with commercial chrome refractories. As far as possible, standard tests were used as criteria.]

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines . It describes briefly operations and mining methods at the Basic Refractories , Inc. , brucite deposit , the only commercial deposit of brucite in production in the United States . The mine and crushing plant are in secs . 26 and 35 , T. 12 N. , R. 36 E. , M. D. B. & M. , northwestern Nye County , Nev . , 1 mile east of Gabbs and about 33 miles northeast of Luning , a town on the Mina branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and U. S. Highway 95. Prior work at the Bureau of Mines resulted in the successful development of a bench-scale, combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling the lead from scrap batteries using waste fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) as electrolyte. This paper describes larger scale experiments. Anodes cast from scrap battery lead were electrorefined in a 20-L multielectrode cell for 3 to 7 days. The anodes, containing 2 to 2.5 pct antimony, were ideal for obtaining firm and adherent slime blankets. Cathode deposits, assaying 99.99 pct Pb, were obtained, with current efficiencies near 99 pct. Sludge leaching was done in 100-L tanks followed by filtering in 61 cm square vacuum pan filtersu Lead of greater than 99.99-pct purity was recovered from the filtrate by electrowinning in a 20-L multielectrode cell using insoluble Pb02-Ti (lead dioxide-coated titanium) anodes and pure lead cathodes. The fluo-silicic acid electrolyte depleted in lead was repeatedly recycled to leach more sludge, and there was no problem with impurity buildup. The amount of Pb02 formed on the anodes during electrowinning was less than 1 pct of the total lead deposited on the cathodes, as long as the phosphorus concentration in the electrolyte was greater than 1.3 giL. Emissions of lead in air were less than 10 ~g/m3, well below the proposed OSHA limit of 50 ~g/m3.
