Stemming is used in blasting operations to help contain explosive gases as long as possible. Stemming can reduce airblast, improve fragmentation, and reduce the chances of hot explosive gases igniting methane and dust explosions in underground mines. Stemming is required in underground coal mines but is generally not used in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Some underground metal and nonmetal mines are classified as gassy and can require special blasting procedures such as the use of stemming to minsure the safety of miners. The types and amounts of stemming material that are desirable in underground metal and nonmetal mine blasting to ensure good or improved fragmentation while containing the hot gases are largely unknown. This Bureau of Mines research examined the effectiveness of differing lengths of stemming by measuring stemming ejection times as related to burden movement. With properly stemmed blasts, stemming is contained until some burden movement has occurred. Test blasts at two surface limestone quarries were evaluated using high-speed photography. For the conditions of these tests, a stemming length of at least 26 charge diameters was found to prevent premature stemming ejection. In tests with stemming lengths of 16 charge diameters, the stemming was effective but there was early venting of hot gases through fractures in the rock. Further testing with other rock types, hole diameters, explosive types, and stemming materials as they affect incendivity is recommended.

Conservation is served by a constant search for higher efficiencies in mining, preparation, and use. Increased utilization is sought through various projects that probe new ways to use coal and expand existing coal markets. This report, the twenty-eighth in the series,3 gives the highlights of Bureau of Mines coal research and technologic work in 1963. The scope and complexity of the program makes it virtually impossible to report all progress on every project, even tor a 12-month period. Full insight into each project can be gained only through intensive review of basic objectives, past accomplishments, and current status of the work. Details of the work are given in numerous publications issued by the Bureau and its laboratories and centers located throughout the country.

Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most, States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. This report documents a systematic approach towards implementing an improved ensemble for the mine rescue team system that will protect against the hazards of mine rescue and recovery and will also afford improved performance through increased comfort and maneuverability, lighter burdens, and improved human engineering designs. In the first part (Task 1) the mine rescue team's protective needs were defined along with the test methods required to evaluate whether a particular piece of gear met these needs. Task 2 assessed existing gear against performance criteria and standards developed in Task 1. Task 3 consisted of the conceptual design and construction phases of the MRPE program. Special consideration was given to advanced concepts, materials, and equipment.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

This paper is one of a series, describing current practice in diamond drilling for production at various mines throughout the United States. It describes the drilling and blasting methods, used at the Tennessee Copper Co., which started using deep-hole drilling for blasting in 1927, employing inde- pendent, rotation percussion drills with sectional drill steel. Since 1942 the company has employed diamond drills for deep-hole drilling. This method has now passed the experimental stage and promises to become permanent. The elimination of rock dust and safer working conditions for the drill crews are listed as the main advantages. The higher initial cost of equip- ment is the principal disadvantage.

CESIUM-137 ISOTOPE began to displace cobalt-60 III the treatment of cancer during 1956. Production and Consumption.-Consumption of cesium and rubidium was approximately the same as in 1955. Production, however, decreased, as several companies shipped from stocks produced in previous years. South Africa was the source of most cesium and rubidium minerals used in the United States in 1956. Cesium and rubidium metals and compounds were produced from ore by: DeRewal International Rare Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; Fairmont Chemical Co., Inc., Newark, N. J.; Foote Mineral Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo. Most sales were to domestic consumers, but small quantities were exported to Australia, England, Germany, and Sweden. New production facilities were under construction in. 1956 by San Antonio Chemicals to produce mixed potassium, rubidium, and cesium carbonates. A plant capable of separating and packaging 200,000 curies of cesium-137 annually was under construction at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.6

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine health and safety trainers that fill gaps in currently available materials and help capture the wisdom and knowledge of “expert miners.” Background NIOSH began a series of stakeholder meetings in 1998 to determine what research was needed to improve miner health and safety. One of the more common concerns among stakeholders was a critical lack of appropriate training materials applicable to metal/nonmetal mining. Participants provided many insights into what effective training materials should include and how materials could best reach both new and experienced miners. The most important factors were that any materials be realistic and interesting and that some way must be found to capture the wisdom of expert miners before they retired. Approach NIOSH researchers chose videos as the best means of achieving these training goals. Over the past 3 years, NIOSH has produced three training videos that present information on safe work practices in underground mines: handling explosives, recognizing roof hazards and using proper scaling techniques, and installing ground supports. The last two videos, “Rock Falls—Preventing Rock Fall Injuries in Underground Mines” and “Miner Mike Saves the Day—or—Ground Support…It’s Important,” have won Alice Hamilton awards, NIOSH’s highest recognition of Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health, in the Educational Materials category. Two new videos are now being released. Both of these videos were shot completely in operating underground hard-rock mines and used expert miners to tell the story. Hazards In Motion The first, “Hazards in Motion,” deals with the dangers of working around mobile equipment in an underground mine. Ben, a new trainee, refuses to pay attention in his 40-hour New Miner Training class, and when the class takes its first trip underground, he wanders off and finds himself in many dangerous situations. He encounters many experienced miners who both chew him out for his unsafe attitude and give him advice and information on how to survive around mobile equipment. Many common pieces of equipment are shown, including haulage trucks, LHD=s, tracks and trains, slushers, skips and hoists, and air doors. The dangers of ignoring signals and of horseplay are also included. After nearly losing his life numerous times, Ben learns his lesson with the help of the Safety Angel, an experienced miner who looks suspiciously like his safety trainer. Ben’s Safety Angel saves his life repeatedly, teaches him how to work safely around these common conveyances, and introduces him to experts who have specific safety tips. Ben learns the error of his ways and vows to be the safest miner in the mine. “Hazards in Motion” is approximately 30 minutes long. Hidden Scars The second video is the first in the NIOSH “Expert Miner” series. “Hidden Scars” is a narrative interview with Don Capparelli, a miner and supervisor at the Sunshine Mine in north Idaho. This video captures the story of a fatal rock burst in May 1994, when Don was seriously injured and his long-time partner, Jimmy Findley, was killed. “Hidden Scars” is a very powerful story. Don Capparelli shares the physical and emotional pain he lives with daily as he relates the events leading up to the rock burst that took the life of his best friend and partner. This video is an excellent reminder of the human cost of uncontrolled accidents and the hidden scars that survivors must deal with for the rest of their lives. It runs approximately 25 minutes.

Assure fail-safe stopping of a mining vehicle immediately following a loss of electric power. Approach A separate emergency brake system which actuates when electrical power is interrupted, was installed on several mining vehicles and tested in a long-term underground mining demonstration. How It Works Separate, spring-actuated brakes, which press against brake discs, are used to stop the vehicle following power failure. To allow norm al movement of the vehicle, hydraulic oil under pres? sure from the vehicle's hydraulic system is directed to a spring? loaded piston in each emergency brake housing. That pressure causes the piston to compress the spring and relieves the spring pressure against the puck, thereby allowing the brake disc to turn freely. See Figure 1 A. If the electrical power fails or if the machine is turned off, a valve in the hydraulic line to the emergency brakes opens. [A system of analysis for sulfur groups in petroleum distillates has been developed as one phase of the Bureau-of Mines investigation of the more economic utilization of the so-called "black oils" of Wyoming. This problem is being studied by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the University of Wyoming at the Bureau's Petroleum Experiment Station , Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming black oils have high sulfur and asphalt content and usually yield only small percentages of straight-run gasoline. A more detailed description of the properties of black oils has been given in a previous publication (3)3/. The preparation and properties of asphalts from those oils have been described (1, 2), and the effect of thermal cracking and the use of ordinary methods of treating wore discussed in one Bureau publication (4), Although these studies gave considerable insight into the properties and characteristics of black- oils; it was thought t that a more fundamental attack would assist-materially in, the problem of sulfur removal.]

Development of reliable, portable, low headroom, hard rock crushers would improve the efficiency of most currently operated conveyor systems and make it possible to bring conveyor haulage closer to the face, thus eliminating expensive rock rehandling procedures. A crusher that could be easily moved would permit the more widespread use of lower cost haulage systems, such as conveyors, to transport the ore out of the mine. Such crushers would be installed close to the working areas, resulting in an optium haul from the face to the dump location. A recent contract study by Rapidex, Inc., "Application Study of Portable Underground Hard Pock Crusher" (USBM Contract No. J0265006) provides a survey of industry needs in portable underground crushing, together with conclusions and concepts as to specifications and type of crusher required to serve the greatest number of operations. To fill this need a three phase program has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines: Phase I - Design: Phase II - Construction and Testing, and Phase III - Production Underground Test. This report covers Phase I only, and includes the complete engineering design and specifications of the Rapidex Rotary Jaw Crusher conceived in the earlier "Applications Study". Also included are the design, construction, and testing of a quarter-scale functional model, utilizing three different types of rock and two different crusher feeder systems.

Bauxite was first discovered in Tennessee, at Chattanooga, in 1906, during the construction of' the McCallie Street tunnel through Missionary Ridge. Several years later, bauxite was found in sinking a well on the Perry or Isabella Stewart property. These and other deposits furnished a substantial tonnage for the abrasive and chemical industries during the years 1906 to, 1920. The search for domestic sources of war material prompted by World War II brought the Tennessee bauxite deposits to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. During the summer of 1942, James S. Cullison and E. Godwin, geologists of the United states Geological Survey, made a survey of the bauxite deposits of the area. In August 1942, Harold B. Ewoldt, a Bureau of Mines engineer, accompanied by the Geological Survey party visited the area and a drilling program was prepared. Drilling was started in November 1942 and continued until March 1943. A total of 2,519.5 feet in 38 holes was drilled on three properties.

Gassy mines require daily inspections with methane detectors to test for the presence of methane. Although in many manes it may be sufficient to know that there is no methane present or that its percentage is below a certain amount, it is desirable and often necessary to determine definitely the percentage of methane at the working faces and in the various air currents. The Bureau of Mines recognizes two general types of portable methane detectors, namely; 1. Methane detectors by which the presence of methane may be detected and its approximate percentage estimated.

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

With the development of larger mine-haulage trucks in recent years, the visual field of the driver has diminished correspondingly. Specifically, the operator's lack of direct vision in the right front area and directly to the rear constitutes a serious hazard to personnel in nearby small utility vehicles. Recently developed electronic technology has made it possible to supplement the use of mirrors and fresnel lenses to warn the operator of specific collision dangers in the truck's blind areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a coordinated contract and in-house research program to develop and test in-mine prototype electronic systems to detect the presence of smaller vehicles within the blind areas of large mine-haulage trucks. Each system utilized transmitters installed on the smaller vehicles and receivers installed on the haulage trucks. Transmitting techniques tested included both low-and high-frequency radio waves. On-vehicle testing established the engineering feasibility of each approach. Further private sector product development to improve reliability and reduce system costs is recommended. Mining companies should consider the advantages of each type of system.
