"The paper contains description of a new project in Russia - gold-processing plant at Aleksandrovskoye deposit (start up in September, 2013). The paper includes a brief description of plant flowsheet, data for material composition and technological properties of ore, as well as information about the achieved parameters of ore processing over the first months of plant operation. The project is interesting because a new semiautogenous mill and a ball mill were purchased on the basis of SAGDesign Consulting Group recommendations after the testing of ore samples characterizing the deposit according to specific years of operation. The plant has relatively small design capacity - 750 000 tpa, but nevertheless is the biggest gold-processing plant in the territory of Zabaikalsky region. Major valuable component in the ore is gold, silver is recovered as a by-product. The ores are very hard to grind. The design grinding flowsheet includes a semiautogenous mill operating in closed circuit with a screen, and a ball mill operating in a closed circuit with hydrocyclones (SAB). Process technology includes gravity processing and flotation with subsequent cyanide leaching of concentrates. Mill operation analysis and conclusions about the compliance of the achieved values to target ones are shown, as well as the accuracy of SAGDesign method when applied to very hard ores of Aleksandrovkoye deposit are presented in this paper. Basic directions of technological flowsheet optimization are also given."

Aragonite was synthesized in addition of Mg2+ ion and SrCO3 seed by carbonation process, and the best condition and mechanism of the synthesis was studied by analysis of continuous pH change, ICP, XRD, and SEM. As MgCl2•6H2O addition increased, aragonite phase increased at condition of CO2 flow rate of 100 mL/min and stirring rate of 250 rpm. It was the dissolution of Mg(OH)2 that determined overall reaction time. As SrCO3 seed addition increased at 0.2 mole MgCl2•6H2O, the amount of aragonite increased and the aspect ratio was from 5 to 9. And it was thought that Mg2+ ion prohibited calcitetransformation of aragonite formed by SrCO3.

The extraction of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) from the laterite deposit of Ramu nickel-cobalt Project in Papua New Guinea was performed in this study. Chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-AES) atomic emission spectrometer, SPS-3000 (Seiko Instruments (Inc.), shows the ore contains 48% Fe, 1% Ni, 0.1% Co, 1.8% Al, 0.14% Mg, and 0.8% Mn. Characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the laterite ore obtained from the mine site shows the ore contains 70 to 80% goethite (FeOOH), assuming Fe content of 48% is mainly from geothite. The main leaching parameters investigated include; slurry temperature, leaching time and sulphuric acid (H2SO4) concentration to evaluate nickel and cobalt extraction. For all experiments, 10g batch samples are put into 300 ml beaker containing 100 ml of sulphuric acid of varying concentrations (1M, 2M, 4M). During the leaching period, 5 ml slurry samples are withdrawn at different times and filtered to obtain filtrate for ICP analysis to monitor nickel and cobalt extraction. Solid samples at the end of all tests are also obtained by filtration and after drying, XRD and ICP tests are performed to monitor nickel and cobalt contents. According to the test results performed at normal atmospheric pressure, over 99% of nickel and over 50% cobalt were extracted into solution within 120 min at 95ºC in 2M H2SO4 solution. Similar results were obtained when only temperature was reduced to 90ºC, but cobalt extraction increased to over 70% when leaching time was increased to 240 min. Further reduction in temperature to 80 and 60ºC resulted in reduction of nickel and cobalt extraction. At the end of each leaching test, magnetite was seen to attach to magnetic stirrer. With increasing of mining depth, many iron ores in Liaoning Province contain carbonates such as siderite and ankerite. The emergence of these carbonates in ores creates a fatal impact on the running producing process of anionic reverse flotation in Dong Anshan Sintering Plant, which leads to ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. And its reason is still unknown. Moreover, siderite, despite that its ferric theoretic grade is only 48.2%, however, do not affect the blast furnace utilization factor, therefore, can be used as raw materials in ironmaking. In order to solve the separate problem of iron ore containing carbonates, five pure minerals, martite, magnetite, quartz, siderite and ankerite, were selected for a series single flotation experiment. The aim was to discover the flotation difference of these minerals, furthermore, to explore a new flow sheet for the iron ore containing carbonates. The results of single mineral flotation experiment reveal that the combination regulators, starch and CaCl2, in different pH extent, can make these minerals taking on obvious flotation difference, which make it possible to process the iron ore containing carbonates. A new flow sheet, step-flotation, to process iron ore containing carbonates is explored, that is, first step, direct-flotation processing, is to eliminate the bad effect that the carbonates bring in flotation system by collecting carbonates under neutral condition; the second step, reverse?flotation processing, is to get qualified iron concentrate by collecting quartz under alkaline condition. Manual mixed ore sample were processed successfully through this new flowsheet under proper reagent system, which has absolute advantage compared with routine flowsheet. Actual ore sample of compound magnetic separation concentrate were processed successfully both open and closed circuit experiment through this new flowsheet. SEM and EDS were used to probe the reason why carbonates affect the regular processing. It is analyzed that moderate floatability of siderite and its coating on the surface of hematite and quartz make the phenomenon ?concentrate and tailing no separated?. This research provides a reasonable processing scheme for iron ores containing carbonates and can be used for reference in processing other complicated, refractory iron ore.

The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

Tangdan copper oxide deposit, the largest independent copper oxide deposit in China so far, is located in the northeast of Yunnan province, southwest of China. The ore from this deposit is characterized by: low grade, high oxidation ratio, and fine-grained disseminated, resulting in poor flotation recovery. The analysis of plant flotation data reveals that the loss of copper minerals into tailings is mainly with coarse size fraction due to insufficient liberation and fine size fractions, especially minus 10 microns fraction, which proved to be very difficult-to-float with conventional flotation. In order to improve the performances of plant flotation of this ore, laboratory flotation tests were conducted with the pure malachite, which was the principle copper oxide mineral in Tangdan copper ore deposit. The results obtained suggested that a finer grinding (up to -325 mesh or even -400 mesh) be needed to decrease the loss with coarse size fraction, and vacuum flotation is a promising way for the recovery of the fine malachite effectively.

"The research is aimed at solving the processing of waste products of titanium-magnesium production. The aim of the research is to extract synthetic carnallite and industrial products enriched with niobium from waste products of titanium-magnesium production. Analysis of the current state of the titanium and magnesium production in the Republic of Kazakhstan shows the availability of significant amounts of chloride wastes containing valuable components. Magnesium and potassium with an average content of 50-60 % potassium chlorides, 25-30 % magnesium chlorides are lost in the wastes of the titanium and magnesium production. Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium Magnesium Plant JSC (UKTMP) currently imports carnallite that is a KCl-MgCl2X6H2O binary salt at quite high prices. Chloride wastes of titanium production, sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator, sludge of a magnesium electrolytic unit and sludge of a carnallite chlorinator has been chosen as the targets of our research. The analysis of niobium distribution within any solid waste of a titanium slag chlorination process in UKTMP JSC showed that the highest content of niobium is in the sublimates of dust chambers of a titanium chlorinator in the ranges from 0.26 to 1.0 %. Among the niobium extraction technologies considered, the known method of its extraction from the chloride waste is leaching with weak solutions of mineral acids or alkalis in order to convert the chloride salts into the solution to be used for synthetic carnallite extraction. Besides niobium, other impurity components are transferred to the cake and shall be separated from the base metals. The effective method for this is the chlorination process enabling niobium transfer into the sublimates in the form of chlorides and thus separating it from the majority of the impurities. The condensed niobium chlorides are hydrolyzed transferring it into sediments in the form of oxide. New ways of processing waste products of titanium-magnesium production with the receipt of marketable products are relevant in the development of processing of mineral raw materials."

Germany-made AFX-100 multi-grade fluidized classifier, with exquisite built-in structure and unique novel design, materializes not only advanced and efficient classification, but also precise particle distribution and safe operation, in addition to lower energy consumption and operational cost. It, simultaneously in place of screw grader, water cyclone, and fine mesh sieve, is equipped with multi-function, and indicates superior advantage in comparison with other else grading facilities. As the third-generation equipment, which is efficient and modern, it, in China and therefore all over the world, will find wide application in processing both fine and ultra-fine iron ore resources. Industrial test, carried out in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Iron Mine, shows efficient classification, i.e., ?74µm particle contents in coarse, medium and fine products come to 6.09%,11.82% and 82.73%, respectively, while qualitative and quantitative efficiencies end up by 74.38% and 87.66%, respectively. Its separation efficiencies amount to 2.2 times as many as spiral classifiers, 1.8 times as hydrocyclones, and 1.3 times as vibration high-frequency fine screens. Another industrial test, which was practiced in Anshan Steel?s Donganshan Sinter Plant, indicates that classification qualitative efficiency comes to 65.06%, equal to 1.51 times as many as hydrocyclones; yield, 55.79%; -71µm particle contents in medium and coarse products, 42.02%; -71µm content in fine product, 95.42%; and concentration, 12.33%. Estimated separation indexes are as follows: Yield for concentrate at 31.22%, up 0.22% than that from general processing line; concentrate grade at 66.42%, up 1.13%; recovery ratio comes to 65.84%, up 1.28%, which, based on pilot study, results in 20 million yuan of economic return for Donganshan Floatation Plant.

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

The downstream treatment of chloride leach solutions of WPCB for recovery of base and precious metals by a combination of adsorption and precipitation processes were carried out. A synthetic leach solution (1 M HCl, 116.5 g/L Cl-, 30 g/L Cu2+, 2.5 g/L Fe3+, 5 mg/L Au3+, 10 mg/L Ag+ and 20 mg/L Pd2+), which was prepared based on the composition of the pregnant leach solution obtained in the previous study was used in the tests. The leach solution was initially subjected to activated carbon (AC) adsorption (20 g/L AC, 80°C) in which gold was selectively recovered over silver and palladium i.e., 88% Au recovery at 0.5 h (92% at 3.5 h) compared with only 3-6% for Ag/Pd. Copper and iron were also observed to adsorb on AC as indicated by 1.4% and 17% decline, in their respective concentrations. Following the adsorption and filtration stage, metallic copper was added into the gold-barren solution to allow reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+, and to cement Pd on metallic copper. Over the mixing period (1 h), 93% of the Pd was recovered while only 1.4% of silver was cemented onto metallic copper. Subsequently, the leach solution was gradually neutralised by NaOH to pH 4, 7.5 and 9.5 for the precipitation of copper as cuprite (Cu2O). It was found that 41% and 46% of Cu and Ag, respectively, were precipitated at pH 4 at which iron was almost totally (99.8%) removed from solution. Precipitation of copper and silver was increased further at high pHs. At pH 9.5, cumulative recoveries for copper and silver were 91% and 85%, respectively. XRD analysis of the precipitates confirmed the presence of cupric copper oxides/hydroxides and revealed that copper losses occurred at pH 4 was due to the undesired presence of cupric copper in the solution.

In 2004, LKAB decided to start a basic engineering study in expanding its existing production lines at the Malmberget mine site. It was expected that some of the production lines would become bottlenecks with reference to capacity. In this study, the sorting plant is examined and the results show that several unit operations will be limiting under current operating conditions. An additional purpose with the study was to investigate how replacement of some machines would influence performance and if production plans for the coming years might be achieved. Steady-state simulations using the software Modsim? were extensively used to study process performance for different operating conditions, such as iron content and size distribution in run-of-mine ore. Model parameters were derived from pilot plant data and when possible from ex-isting circuits. A complication for the simulations was the lack of relevant data and therefore some of the initial results were only indicative. The result shows that installation of new screens would give a much better operation, but also new crushers would be an improvement. This, since they can be run with full crusher chamber and tighter CSS. During 2007, most of the proposed remedies were implemented and the result is that the bottle-necks are gone, and the grades and material balances are even better than what was envisioned from the simulations.

This concept focuses on minimum/ judicious use of natural resources, thereby preserving the resources for future generation while meeting the bare minimum requirement of the present generation. For an emerging economy like India, Mining and Mineral based industries form the back bone of our economic development. Thus, sustainability of mining and mineral processing industry has a far reaching impact on sustainable economic development of our nation. While at a macro-economic level, we have to strike a balance between economic development vis-à-vis socio-economic & environmental impacts, Industries have to ensure judicious and frugal use of natural resources by making use of energy efficient plants & machineries and adopting befitting technology for reduction & recycling of waste. In the context of the above, it would be interesting to look into the sustainability measures taken up by National Aluminium company (Nalco) at its Crushing & conveying plant at Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine, which is incidentally Asia?s largest Bauxite Mine. In the backdrop of the above stated facts, in this paper the authors make an attempt to bring out the sustainability issues in areas of energy conservation, environmental impact/pollution vis-a-vis mitigation measures adopted in crusher & conveyor plant of Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine & CSR / peripheral developmental activities undertaken by Nalco to mitigate the socio- economic impacts. "Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001).Recycled water, however, has been shown to adversely affect flotation. Reagent efficiency can be reduced due to increased suspended solids. A loss of mineral recovery can occur due to competitive adsorption between reagents and other dissolved species, loss of reagents due to precipitation, and unwanted reactions. Further, a reduction in grade can occur due to non-selective coating of reagents on valuable and gangue minerals, and hydrophobic coating of microbiological material on gangue, causing unwanted flotation. Yet despite these drawbacks, water reuse has the advantages of minimal fresh water use and reduced reagent consumption by recovering the unconsumed reagents retained in wastewaters (Bruckard et al., 2011; Levay et al., 2001; Shengo et al., 2016; Slatter et al., 2009)."

"The goal of prospecting operations in the Republic of Altay was to locate gold-sulfide-quartz mineralization. For this purpose we applied the technology of electromagnetic sounding and induced polarization (EMS-IP). These operations resulted in localizing promising sites with presence of sulfidization. The EMS-IP method proved to be highly efficient amongst other prospecting methods targeted at recognizing zones of sulfide mineralization making up 91%, considering that in more than half cases the ore intervals were the case. In the Yakutian diamondiferous province the EMS-IP technology was approbated during three field seasons to accomplish the assignments on searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of various geological types. As a result, the reference objects were distinguished, and geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion were defined.INTRODUCTION In the time span 2015-2016 in Gorny Altay the EMS-IP technology was approbated in the Novokuznetsk area. The on-land areal geophysical survey was performed by EMS-IP method applied to identify, outline and locate promising sites with Au-Ag-bearing polymetallic mineralization within surveyed areas. Compared to the hosting rocks, the sulfides contained in polymetallic mineralization are typified by low specific electrical resistivity (SER) and high polarization. The areal survey conducted via EMS-IP method provided spatial characteristics of searched object. From July 2016 to August 2017 our expedition group carried out serial test works and laboratory investigations intending to define performance capabilities of EMS-IP technology in searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of diverse geological types. The prerequisites for serial work were operations accomplished at the «Listvenichny» site lying 35 km away from Mirny town in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), where the EMS-IP technology was probed for locating position and measuring geoelectric parameters of tuff pipe «Buardakhsky». After successful completion of operations it was decided to evaluate geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion."

Extensive exploration for uranium metal by the Department of Atomic Energy in India led to the discovery of new carbonate host rock uranium deposits Tummalapalle and Gogi, which are located in southern part of India. Alkaline leaching at elevated temperature and pressure using autoclave is the central unit process in the overall strategy for extraction of uranium from these new ore deposits. Autoclave leaching is affected largely by intrinsic nature of the ore and by the process variables and the equipment settings. In order to understand such a complex process and also to be able to predict the process performance under randomly (ore grade, uranium mineralogy, gangue mineralogy etc.) and consciously perturbed variable settings (partial pressure of oxygen, temperature, concentration of leachant, stirring speed and time), sound and robust mathematical models are needed with analytical and/or numerical solutions. Present investigation attempts to develop a variant of kinetic correlation based on shrinking core model for batch alkaline leaching process in an autoclave. The leaching model incorporates particle size distribution according to popular Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation, rather than assuming a single mean size for all the particles participating in the leaching reaction. Kinetic experimental data generated in autoclave leaching of Gogi uranium ore was used to evaluate various constants of the model developed. The ore sample used for experiments assayed 0.21 per cent U3O8. The partial pressure of oxygen was varied between 0.15 to 6.5 atm, temperature from 343 K to 438 K, concentration of sodium carbonate leachant in the range 0.47 g mol/L to 0.94 g mol/L, and the stirring speed from 573 rev/min to 900 rev/min in the experiments. The goodness of fit of the leaching process model is found to be >0.95. Morphological studies carried out on leached and unleached particulate matter using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X ray analyses are included in the present study.

The main chemical constituents of waste cooking oil are higher fatty acid glycerides, which can be used to produce anionic fatty acids for most non-sulfide flotation. However, using the mixed fatty acids (MFA) produced by waste cooking oil as collectors directly, the flotation effect is usually not satisfactory, especially at lower temperature or room temperature. There are very rare systematic studies about the reason for poor flotation performance of waste cooking oil. This study aims to investigate the flotation and adsorption characteristic of different types of fatty acids in waste cooking oil to find out what kind of fatty acids results in the poor flotation performance. This will provide technical supports and theoretical guidance for the waste cooking oil application in the field of mineral processing. In this study, MFA were produced from the waste cooking oil, and then separated into saturated fatty acids (SFA) as well as unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), which possessing different flotation properties. The properties of the MFA, SFA and UFA were analyzed by iodine value, melting point measurement, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and quartz micro-flotation tests. The results showed that UFA was composed of fatty acids containing group—(CH=CH—CH2)n—, having an iodine value of up to 162.90, a melting point as low as -17.3 ? and stronger low-temperature floatability. In contrast, the SFA was made up with saturated fatty acids and a few oleic acids, with an iodine value of 48.97 and a melting point of 38.8 ?. SFA had shown poor collectability and required a flotation temperature higher than 35 ?. The results of zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry calculation and FT-IR spectra revealed that both UFA and SFA can be adsorbed on the quartz surface activated by CaCl2 via the chemical and hydrogen bonding. The reason MFA having a poor flotation performance is the SFA has an extremely high melting point which affecting the dissolution of the dispersion.

In the last 4 years, the high price of silver attracted more interest for improving its extraction. Metallic silver and silver minerals require a high concentration of cyanide and show slow leaching rates and poor extraction. This investigation determined the effects of dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate and a pretreatment on silver leaching from slurry containing quartz mixed with metallic silver and high purity acanthite. Stephanite, pyrargyrite and polybasite were also used in the study. The silver minerals were characterized by chemical assay, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), image analysis (MP-SEM-IPS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Increased dissolved oxygen of the slurry produced the fastest silver leaching kinetics. The leaching of silver from high purity acanthite was determined under various conditions and compared to a new process called ?CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process (CELP). For a slurry containing acanthite, a 23% improvement (from 76% to 99%) in silver extraction was obtained with the CELP. In presence of pyrargyrite and polybasite, silver extraction increased from 75% to 90% and 86% to 99% respectively using the CELP. No improvement was obtained for the slurry with stephanite (99% extraction in 72 hours). However, the sliver leaching rate was much faster with the CELP. XPS analysis of individual silver mineral particles showed that CELP leached surfaces were considerably more oxidized relative to the conventional cyanidation leached surfaces. Leaching of two gold/silver ores indicated that the efficiency of the CELP increased with the refractoriness of the sample. Gold extractions were comparable for the two technologies while silver extraction improved up to 5% (70g/t) for the CELP. The final leach solutions contained lower concentrations of copper, which consequently reduces the effluent treatment costs.

Results of the study of chloride ion concentration effect to osmium-187 sorption from wastewater of copper smelter with use of foreign anionites of different basicity and structure are presented in the work. It was found that the increase of chloride ion concentration in the wastewater helps to increase recovery of osmium using anionites regardless of their nature. The ways to intensify the process are proposed. The method for osmium elution from the anionites with potassium iodate solution was developed. It was shown that the method lets to recover up to 99% of osmium from the anionites. Recommendations for selection of eluents for better recovery of osmium from the anionites were elaborated. With a demand for increasing energy efficiency and a need for improving bitumen recovery, a highly integrated solution for sustainable lease development of Aurora North of Syncrude has been proposed and implementation plans are underway. Flocculation and thickening technology as an important component of the integrated solution provides Syncrude an opportunity of rapid heat recovery from tailings and more flexible tailings closure and reclamation options. Flocculation of fine-particle suspensions by polymers is a non-equilibrium process whose performance is strongly influenced by physical and chemical variables. While polymeric flocculants are frequently used to establish the chemical conditions favorable for flocculation, the actual performance of a flocculation process generally depends more on the physical variables, such as the hydrodynamic conditions in mixing the flocculants and slurry. In order to study the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculation of Syncrude fine tailings, a standardized laboratory test procedure called power flocculation has been developed in comparison with the conventional manual mixing methods. It is shown that the agitation speed and time in conditioning the flocculant solution and the slurry have a profound effect on the flocculation performances measured by initial settling rates, supernatant clarity and sediment density. It was found that the optimum bench test conditions for power flocculation of Aurora fine tailings with a sand-to-fine ratio (SFR) of about 1:1 are conditioning of the flocculant solution and the tailings slurry at 250 rev/min to 300 rev/min in 20 s to 40 s. The test results are inter-preted with a flocculant adsorption/redistribution kinetic model that helps understanding of the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on flocculant adsorption, floc formation and floc growth.

An atomic force microscope has been used to measure the forces acting between two silica and two rutile surfaces in the presence and absence of cationic surfactants, CnTACl (n = 12~18). The forces measured in the absence of surfactant can be fitted to the DLVO theory. At short separations, however, the silica surfaces exhibited repulsive hydration forces, while the rutile surfaces did not. On the other hand, the forces measured in the presence of the cationic surfactants show long-range attractions that are larger than the van der Waals forces. The long range attractions are the strongest at of the point of charge neutralization (p.c.n.), which decreases with increasing surfactant chain length. The possible origin of the long-range attraction has been tested in view of the charged-patch model of Miklavic et al. (1994). However, the sizes of the patches back-calculated from the model were much larger than those the patches (or hemi-micelles) determined experimentally and reported in the literature. It is, therefore, suggested that the long-range attractions observed in the present work are due to the structural response of the water molecules in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces.
