A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners' Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners' Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

The Home smelter is a custom copper smelter located in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. In 2005, the smelter produced 145,000 t of copper containing 807,000 oz of gold, 20,388,000 oz of silver in addition to 515,000 t of sulphuric acid. Recently, a flexible flow sheet has been developed incorporating the intermittent use of the Noranda Continuous Converter allowing for the increasing or decreasing of production based on market conditions, while attaining 90% or greater sulphur fixation regardless of operating mode. For 2006, the smelter is operating in full production mode and production is expected to be approximately 185,000 tm of copper. Mechanical modifications, process changes, metallurgical concepts, minor element treatments, and operational techniques that have allowed the smelter to develop this flexibility are presented. Current efforts to increase the productivity of the converter aisle and anode furnaces as well as improvements being made to address fugitive emissions are also discussed.

In April 2005, Umicore Copper de-merged from Umicore Group and created a new independent Copper company called Cumerio. As a separate company, Cumerio is a major European copper smelter and refinery and a leading producer of copper products such as wire rod, billets, cakes and specialty rod with a total production capacity of copper products in excess of 500,000 tpy with production plants in Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria. The Pirdop Smelter is the only state-of the-art smelter in South East Europe and it makes Pirdop the natural hub for the copper industry in the region. In order to be competitive in the international market the main challenges facing Cumerio are to maintain its low cost structure and to achieve higher production volumes while reducing its impact to the environment and striving for continuous improvement of the production process. Cumerio's state-of-the-art smelting facility in Pirdop has recently increased the anode production capacity to 250,000 tpy by the installation of the third evaporative cooler on the converters section that allows operating with three-hot converters. In April 2007 a general shut-down for repair and modification on the Flash Smelting Furnace and Waste Heat Boiler is envisaged. At this time a revamp of one of the existing Sulphuric Acid Plants is planned, resulting in a further copper capacity increase to 275,000 tpy with modest Capex. In 2005 Cumerio received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water the Complex Permit under the EU IPPC criteria. Accordingly an Environmental Compliance Program was defined targeting a large reduction in the secondary emissions. The system will be commissioned in May 2007. In order to better integrate the smelter and refinery in Pirdop and to respond to the growing demand for cathodes in the region, a new state-of-the-art Electrolytic Refinery with an installed capacity of 180,000 tpy will replace the existing refinery. The new refinery is expected to be fully operational as from early 2008. This paper describes the challenges and the projects.

"Design of engineering controls to limit occupational noise exposure rely on accurate calculation inputs. Sound in mines can carry considerable distances. Mine ventilation engineers rely on noise propagation calculations to estimate silencer performance criteria for key mine fan installations that are often in proximity to occupied areas of a mine and can remain in service for decades. The blasted and rockbolted walls of hard rock mining tunnels have unique acoustical properties. Underground testing in an operating metal mine in Sudbury, Canada was performed and results processed to characterize noise propagation in mines, with the goal of improving the accuracy of noise calculations.INTRODUCTIONAs mine operators continue to improve and promote workplace safety, addressing noise at fixed infrastructure locations is observed as increasingly common. Underground fans are important to consider in this context, as they are typically loud, in proximity to occupied and sensitive workplaces, and operate nearly continuously. Predicting noise propagation from ventilation fans within underground mines has long been a challenge, with few available resources documenting acoustical properties as calculation inputs. Other factors in addition to rock face absorption properties include tunnel geometry and distance from the fan, which play critical roles in characterizing the noise level at any given point away from the fan. By understanding and establishing methods to better predict noise dissipation along underground mining tunnels, engineers can design noise controls with a greater degree of precision and confidence to effectively protect workers from over exposure to noise.This paper investigates classical methods of predicting reverberant room and direct field noise propagation. These prediction methods are then compared to noise measurements taken within the Fraser Mine of Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO) Measurements were taken at a depth of ~881 m (2,889 ft), along an ~300 m (984 ft) long blasted hard rock mining tunnel. The noise along the mine tunnel resulted from the intakes of two 900 kW (1,200 hp) ventilation fans with a combined exhaust capacity of 300 m3/s (630,000 cfm)."

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

"RésuméDes boulettes de concentres d'hématite spéculaire à basse silice ont été produites en substituant la bentonite par de la tourbe, adéquatement traitée, additionnée d'une faible quantile de soude caustique durant le boulettage. La réductibilité de telles boulettes et leur gonflement pendant la réduction ont été évacues, en utilisant quatre mélanges gazeux différents, formes de H2 - CO - N2.L'influence du pouvoir réducteur du gaz utilise, sur le gonflement des boulettes, à été mis en évidence. Quelles que soient ces conditions réductrices, les propriétés mesurées sur les boulettes liées a la tourbe sont comparables aux propriétés obtenues avec des boulettes traditionnelles liées à la bentonite.ABSTRACTAdditions of peat moss and small quantities of NaOH during balling of low silica specular hematite concentrates have eliminated the need to use bentonite as a binder. The reducibility and swelling of such pellets have been evaluated using four different gas mixtures, consisting of H2 - CO -N2. The influence of the reducing power of the gases, on the swelling behaviour of pellets has been documented. Under the different reducing conditions, this new type of pellets exhibit properties similar to the ones obtained using bentonite."

A concerted effort between Akan International Limited and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has been initiated to develop a liquid-based slurrymaking process, dubbed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device) for semi-solid forming. The technology is presently entering the industrial and commercial stages, and will be used by the first customers at the end of 2006. Semi-solid processing of aluminium alloys offers many advantages in fabricating economically near-net-shape parts of superior quality. The SEED process helps to overcome problems experienced with thixocasting and especially the high cost of feedstock. The SEED process involves two main steps: 1) heat extraction to achieve a desired liquid/solid mixture, and 2) drainage of an excess liquid to produce a self-supporting semi-solid slug that is formed under pressure. The heat transfer plays an important role (enthalpy equilibrium) during the manufacture of the semi-solid slurry and its analysis is briefly described. The semisolid material is obtained using different processing times and initial conditions. The impact on the solid fraction distribution and the morphological evolution of the microstructure is presented. The influence of the SEED processing parameters (slurry preparation) and the resulting mechanical properties for the alloy A356 are also reported.

"In this work the dissolution, precipitation and adsorption behaviour of gold in acidic iron sulphate media containing small amounts of chloride ions is investigated via batch laboratory tests and OLI thermodynamic calculations over the temperature range 25-250°C. Chloride ions may be present in industrial pressure oxidation/pressure leaching (POX/PL) operations due to elevated water salinity levels or due to intentional addition as is the case of the CESL Copper Pressure Leaching Process. Thermodynamic calculations show that AuCl4 - may form depending on the free Cl-/Au ratio and temperature, its stability increasing with increasing Cl- concentration and decreasing with increasing temperature. On the other hand during POX/PL, we know that massive precipitation of iron in various hydrolysis products and compounds occurs. Hence of interest is the question how AuCl4 - that may form during leaching interacts with the iron precipitation products. Gold(III) chloride was found to co-precipitate with iron(III) (oxy) hydroxides and arsenates forming in the autoclave but not with natrojarosite. Upon further investigation it was discovered that activated carbon added in the autoclave (as done in CIL) acts as preferential sink for the mobilized gold, hence opening the potential for the development of a direct cyanide-free gold recovery process in acidic sulphate leach reactors.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of gold from ores and concentrates has evolved over the years with processing routes becoming increasingly complex. Given the high value of gold, any reduction in losses during recovery operations constitutes an important economic benefit. One such loss that needs to be addressed is the potential solubilisation of gold during pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory sulphidic gold feedstocks. For example, Agnico Eagle Mines reported a loss in gold recovery due to the formation of a gold chloride complex (Garofalo, 2009). Gold is known to form complexes in solution, such as gold(III) chloride, if an excess of chloride ions are present. The fate of such soluble gold chloride during pressure oxidation and the subsequent neutralization of the acidic discharge slurry will determine if gold is lost or recovered in the downstream cyanidation operation. Thus it is of interest to know under what conditions gold chloride may stay soluble or co-precipitate along primary (formed in the autoclave) or secondary (formed during neutralization) precipitates. Furthermore, the mode of co-precipitated gold, such as adsorption on iron compounds, like goethite and hematite (Machesky et al., 1990; Nachayev, 1984); substitution in one of the precipitated phases; or finally chemical reduction to metallic state would have consequences in terms of gold recovery."

Ce treuil de marque Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay construit en 1970, opère avec 2 moteurs de 930 kW a une vitesse de 700 m/min. et il a une capacité maximale de 32000 kg. Deux câbles d'acier de 45 mm de diarnètre et de 160 000 kg de résistance a la rupture servant au hissage des bennes d'une capacité de 12 tonnes. De plus, un moteur/générateur de 3000 kW (M.G. "The present contribution examines, in some detail, what appear to be the three outstanding features of the field occurrence of the conformable ""pyritic"" deposits. These are their association with fragmental volcanic rocks (and derivatives), their occurrence in sediments of near-shore formation, and their highly variable structural associations.In a recent paper it has been suggested that two such ""pyritic"" de-posits in New Brunswick may have originated as marine concentrations of volcanic base metal and sulphur compounds, and that many of their present features are the result of diagenesis, folding, and regional metamorphism. This is now put for-ward as a general explanation for the particular class of deposit considered.Such deposits should, on this hypo-thesis, be regarded quite simply as an integral part of the particular geological environment in which they occur -as a normal, though minor, sedimentarry type developed, char-acteristically, in near-shore and shelf facies of intravolcanic units formed along the margins of eugeosynclines. They should not be considered -as, for example, is required by the re-placement theory -as later features simply superimposed on a geological situation to which they are genetically unrelated. Where they are associated with folds and other structures, this may be attributed, from one in-stance to another, to mechanical migration during folding, weaknesses induced by pre-existing sulphides, and, occasionally, to fortuitousness.In the light of this postulated origin, it is suggested that the first stages in regional prospecting for deposits of this particular class should be broadly palaeogeographical. Later phases of the search should then be directed to the delineation of sedimentary facies and, finally, to the investigation of geological structure."

"Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. L’apprentissage concret dans les cours d’ingénierie appliquée souffrirait grandement si l’accent n’est pas mis sur l’expérience pratique. This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. "The availability and reliability of large grinding mills and their Gearless Mill Drives (GMDs) are of paramount importance for the grinding process. Although GMDs have been in service for decades, and are known for their operational efficiency (reliability and robustness with reduced operating cost per ton), compared to conventional drives, in the last decade due to certain reasons some failures led to serious unscheduled shutdowns and significant insurance events.The majority of these notable ""insured"" failures have happened on GMDs installed on relatively large mills, as the financial impact of a failure is proportional to the through-put of the mill. Despite the occurrences of these events, as mining operations are driven by lower ore grades and the ability to continue reducing operating costs per ton, the trend for having larger mills is still very present and there is no reason why this trend should not continue.It is obvious that if not handled correctly, the possibility of large value GMD loss events, coupled with the continuing increase in mill size or required availability and reliability targets, could potentially lead to major conflicts as it becomes difficult for the insurance companies to judge the risk and hence may result in hesitation to insure these grinding circuits. This paper will not only describe the conflicting situation from both an insurer's perspective and from an equipment supplier's perspective, but also how these conflicting challenges can be successfully mastered. It has to be noted that not only the mining companies themselves, but also their insurance companies and the involved equipment suppliers have a common interest: to reach the highest availability and reliability in order to avoid or at least minimize unscheduled shut down times, and most importantly prevent unplanned events that result in extended production stoppages or reductions in through-put of GMD driven mills.From the very beginning onwards, the complete service concept together with emergency plans must be integrated on every level in the design of the grinding circuit. This approach must be implemented continuously and without compromises by all involved parties during all following stages, such as basic design, detail design, manufacturing, quality inspection and testing, packing, transportation, storage, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The concept of formal risk analysis related to mill operations, maintenance and spare parts strategies must be an integral part of mining companies’ decisions related to the selection for installation and continued use of large mills powered by GMDs. The service concept in place for operating mills shall also have a clear focus on very early detection of any abnormalities, so that the risk can be mitigated and unscheduled shutdown times avoided. However, if a major failure occurs, then procedures and tools shall already be available in order to ensure that production impact is minimized."

Outotec is continuously developing our existing process equipment and new equipment solutions to enhance the Flash Smelting process. Thanks to the long operating history of the Outotec Flash Smelting process feedback from the numerous operating references are available and is utilized. The general goals for development work are to improve equipment performance, thus realizing savings in Smelter plant operation costs by increasing the process efficiency and online availability. Digitalization also opens new possibilities for the feeding equipment and furnace operation monitoring. These solutions will improve the safety and performance of the smelter, and provide process and equipment related information which has not been available earlier. INTRODUCTION The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. The Flash Smelting technology, is now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, is now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy. The two companies have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a hot theme/topic during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has nevertheless been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. Along with the process technology development, also development of the equipment has taken place over time. Outotec is continuously working on developing our equipment to better suit the changing need of our customers in the continuously changing operational environment. Orebodies are getting more challenging with lower ore grades and more impurities. Achieving high recoveries for all valuable elements becomes more difficult with high slag quantities and with the need to tackle the high impurity concentrations. There is a need for higher capacities in greenfield and brownfield smelters. The role of the Loss-in-Weight Feeder, the Air Slide and Concentrate Burner is to ensure even feed into the reaction shaft of the Flash Smelting Furnace, and to enable controlling the process well, thereby enabling the best performance for the customers smelter. The design of the Flash Smelting Furnace aims for high availability, long campaign and safe operation.

Magnesium alloys are steadily improving their market share as structural components especially in the transportation sector. Therefore, there is a great deal of interest from the automotive and the metal casting industry to develop viable economic casting processes for magnesium-base alloys. This paper summarizes the preliminary results on the continuing projects within CANMET-MTL on casting processes such as gravity and low-pressure casting in sand molds, permanent molds and lost foam.

NO. 3 winze, the sixth shaft to be sunk on the San Antonio property, is practically a duplicate of No. 3 shaft, which was the main shaft prior to the installation of the larger hoisting equipment in 1939. It is collared on the tenth, or 1,500-ft., level, and goes down vertically to the sixteenth, or 2,500-ft., level, with a loading pocket, spill pocket, and sump below this. It is 1,000 feet east of No. 3 shaft. All ore, men, and materials are handled through the latter. The winze location with reference to the rock formation is shown in Figure 1. (In plan, this section strikes N.30°E. and cuts most of the main orebodies of the mine normal to their strike.) It is collared eighty feet inside the footwall contact of the basalt and cuts through it before reaching the eleventh level. In this location there will be no ore tied up in shaft pillars, as the closest ore to the shaft is on the tenth level, and here it is eighty feet northeast of the collar. The winze headframe and hoist-room straddle the main haulage to the No. 3 shaft, on the tenth level (see Figure 2). At no time during the excavation for the headframe and hoist-room was the general routine work of this haulage held up.

Corrosion is a significant factor affecting the capacity and working life of ground support. The paper explores a relatively simple method to predict the load capacity of a support system using a Monte Carlo stochastic approach. The analysis uses published field data on existing ground support to evaluate the applicability of the method and its predictive performance. Discussion on corrosion rates found in the field and predicted from laboratory measurement is provided.
