"For many years the training of mill operators was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. Recognizing the needs and benefits of better training some companies, and even some provinces through legislation, have moved to ensure that a formalized training program exists in the plants. These programs tend to focus on basic safety and operations. Much remains to be done. With the more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, and the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, operator training has become a critical issue. This paper briefly examines the evolution of training programs, provides some measure of their effectiveness, and explores some recent developments which could have a very significant impact on the industry.PreambleOne can draw an analogy between operator training and the mechanical support of production equipment. When we buy a piece of process equipment it is critical that the mechanical installation be done properly to ensure that the device will operate at peak performance on start-up. Once the equipment is running, some form of preventive maintenance is required to ensure continued efficient operation. The operators and the equipment are both elements of the processing system, yet the former do not seem to get the same ""start-up"" or ""operating"" support. Are they not seen as critical to efficient operation? Why is this so? What impact does it have? How can we improve?These are all very logical and important questions, although the answers are not nearly so obvious. In the mineral processing industry, progress in operator training over the past thirty years has been limited and quite variable. To address the perceived need for a more coherent and consistent approach, some provinces have moved to incorporate basic training requirements in their legislation. Some plants have gone a few steps further by building integrated training programs into their operating culture. One conclusion which can be easily reached is that there are no standards, and that the range of training activity is great. In other words, a flotation operator is not a flotation operator is not a flotation operator. Their knowledge and skills are very much a function of training and experience, which are clearly corporate and site specific."

"Funding has been made available through the National Energy Program to build a mobile fine coal treatment plant. The plant is intended f or field application and also to upgrade the existing pilot plant facilities.Western Canadian coals with high proportions of fines (due 10 their friability) cause high losses of fine coal to the reject and in turn reduce the over-all recovery of saleable coal. Eastern Canadian coals with high amounts of sulphur of ten require crushing to fin e sizes to liberate pyrite and therefore need effective and efficient separation of these fine sulphur particles. The difficulties involved in solving these problems are two-fold. One is the reluctance to experiment in an operating wash plant and the other is that laboratory scale testing often cannot be extrapolated to the plant environment. The mobile fine cleaning plant with its ability to operate at existing coal preparation plants across Canada and with its flexibility in implementing flowsheet option s and close monitoring of fine coal circuit variables, is ideally suited to solve these fine coal cleaning problems. The mobile plant objectives are to design and optimize flowsheets, evaluate and improve fine cleaning circuit operations and 10 lest new process monitoring and control equipment.The schedule for construction and the required resources will be outlined along with flowsheet options and the general R&D philosophy of the mobile plant.IntroductionIn relation to coal preparation technology, Canadian coal s can be grouped as Eastern coal, Rocky Mountain metallurgical coal and Foothills high volatile bituminous coal. The eastern coals have high sulphur contents and in some cases require crushing or even grinding to liberate the fine pyrite . Rocky Mountain metallurgical coals often occur in highly sheared seams which have been subjected to rapid coalification. The high friability of these coals means that degradation during mining, handling and processing is extensive and results in large amounts of fine s ranging between 20 and 60% by mass of the wash plant feed. The widely varying geo logical structure and exposure to the elements results in partially oxidized coals which perform inconsistently in the traditional method of fine cleaning by flotation . Foothills high volatile bituminous coals for thermal use are frequently interbedded with soft shales and bentonitic clays. These clays disintegrate during washing and swell, producing large volumes of tailings. The presence of clays in plant circuits, particularly fine circuits, tends to increase the viscosity and may cause deterioration of the fines density separation and increase magnetite losses. In view of the fact that fine coal cleaning is the most difficult aspect of coal preparation , a research program is being established to study the factors involved and to offer some solutions.A recent performance evaluation of Canadian washeries showed that yield losses in the minus 2 mm coal circuits were approximately ten times those occurring in the coarse coal circuits(1). Because 2 mm x 0 coal represents 30 to 70 per cent of the raw coal, these losses can be considerable . The operating and capital costs of beneficiating minus 6 mm coal are about four to five times higher than for plus 6 mm coal. In the case o f minus 2 mm coal the costs are even higher. The economic importance of the fine coal cleaning cannot be over emphasized and as a result, the CANMET R&D program is geared for fine coal beneficiation."

"Mine Gallen is a zinc-rich pyritic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit that occurs in a fault-bounded block of intermediate volcanic rocks. The block is completely surrounded at the present erosion level by the eastern part of the Lac Dufault granodiorite. The volcanic succession includes a massive feldspar porphyry that is probably a subvolcanic intrusion, an andesitic flow unit and lapilli tuffs. The latter are variably sericitized and pyritic, especially in the vicinity of the massive sulphide into which they grade.The ore body is predominantly pyritewith local sphalerite contents as high as 20%; minor chalcopyrite and trace galena are disseminated, but are found mainly along late cleavage. Most ore is a breccia of massive to banded pyrite-sphalerite, veined by massive and complexly banded sulphides. These structures formed by repeated blocky jointing, cracking, sealing, healing and annealing as hydrothermal fluid repeatedly passed through a developing sulphide mound. The deposit is interpreted to have grown on the seafloor in a manner similar to active mounds in the Galapagos rift.RESUME La Mine Gallen exploite un gisement de sulfures massifs volcan géniques comprenant essentiellement de la pyrite riche en zinc. Ce gisement se trouve a /'intérieur d’un bloc de roches volcaniques de caractère dacitique a andésitique, limite par failles et entoure de tout cote par la granodiorite du Lac Dufault. The paper reviews the requirements of the instrumentation required to monitor mining excavations in a high stress environment, and the development plan to instrument the D-Bolt in such a fashion as to be able to follow the behaviour of the bolts in relationship to the ground movements and support performance. Recent field observations of D-Bolts under static and dynamic conditions are also presented. Also discussed is the assumed mechanical behaviour of the D-Bolt. D-Bolts are used in two (2) Canadian underground mines operating in high stress environments and tested in three (3) other operations.

"AbstractA number of plant-scale cyanidation tests were carried out in an attempt to uncover the causes of fluctuations in gold recovery efficiency. Computer analysis of the results verified that the treatment of reclaimed waste rock material along with normal run-of-mine ore was having an adverse effect on metallurgical efficiency. Mineralogical examinations showed that the free gold particles in the dump material were heavily tarnished or coated (predominantly by hydrated iron oxide), accounting for the lower recoveries. The indications were that the effect could be counteracted somewhat by using higher than normal cyanide and lime reagent concentrations and adequate leaching times. Analysis of the results showed further that leach pulp density was an important operating parameter affecting extraction efficiency. A variable activation energy leaching model provided an extremely good characterization of individual batch leach runs.IntroductionFLUCTUATING METALLURGICAL EFFICIENCY at the gold concentrator of the S.A. The properties required for a com-pound to form useful thermoelectric materials are described. Uranium compounds which might have these properties are reviewed. Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). "IntroductionUNTIL the recent discovery and development of deposits at Allard Lake, on the Lower Romaine river, practically the whole of Quebec's - and indeed of Canada's - production of ilmenite had come from deposits in the vicinity of St. Urbain, Charlevoix •county, a village about eight miles north of Bay St. Paul on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, some sixty miles below the city of Quebec (see Figure l) . Although these deposits were known nearly three hundred years ago and were worked in a small way during the years 1872-74, when a charcoal blast furnace was operated by the Canadian Titanic Iron Company for making white pig iron, it was not until 1908 that more or less continuous production commenced and has •continued to the present by the American Titanic Iron Company. The whole of the output has been exported to the United States.The ilmenite occurs in lenses •and dyke-like bodies within anorthosite. Production has come chiefly from three deposits: General Electric, Furnace, and East and West Coulombe. During 1951 -52, an extensive diamond drilling programme was carded out under the direction of the writer to test the Furnace and the East and West Coulombe deposits (Figures 2 and 3), which form part of the property of St. Lawrence Iron and Titanium Mines, Limited. The average tenor of the orebodies encountered in the course of the drilling was 38.60 per cent TiO2 and, in addition to these high-grade •bodies, there was found a very considerable tonnage of lower grade ore."

This is followed by a description of developing technology, which is the result of years of research and piloting effort directed to the development of a more economical method to produce high-grade metallic zirconium. "This paper deals with the recovery of the tungsten and vanadium from spent SCR catalyst leach liquors by different hydrometallurgical methods. The first part consists of pressure leaching of spent SCR catalyst using caustic soda followed by metal recovery by liquid-liquid extraction. In a leaching process, the following experimental parameters were tested and optimized: NaOH, particle size of feedstock, temperature, and solid to liquid ratio. The optimum condition for leaching of tungsten and vanadium was under the following conditions: NaOH 3 mol/L, temperature 250°C, particle size <300 µm, and solid to liquid ratio 0.4. From these optimum conditions in this experiment, the dissolution efficiency of vanadium and tungsten was 91.5and 87%, respectively. Liquid-liquid extraction following commercial extractants were tested: TBP, Cyanex 272, D2EHPA, Aliquat 336, Primeme JM-T, Alamine 308, Alamine 304-1, and methyl-tri-octyl-ammonium chloride. The conditions for both valuable metal recoveries were optimized.INTRODUCTIONSelective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst has become the most effective to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from stationary segments such as power plants and waste incinerations around the world due to the reinforcing regulatory trend and emerging environmental issues (Forzatti, 2001; Spivey, 2002; Li et al., 2011).Currently, the most widely used SCR catalyst is V2O5-WO3/TiO2 system due to its great catalytic properties (Li et al., 2011; Marshneva et al., 1995; Marbergeret al., 2015). In general, the composition of the SCR catalyst used in the stationary application is 0.5 to 1 wt% of V2O5and 7 to 10 wt% of WO3(Marberger et al., 2015; Chen &Yang, 1992, Vuurman et al., 1991; Alemany et al., 1991). Currently spent SCR catalysts are treated as waste and disposed of in landfills. This causes a lot of waste of secondary resources of vanadium and tungsten. In terms of industrial value of vanadium and tungsten (Gupta &Mukherjee, 1990; Moskalyk &Alfantazi, 2003) and reduction of pollutant emissions, it should not be disregarded for their recovery for their material recycling from spent SCR catalyst. However, investigations for recovery of metal values from spent SCR catalyst has been rarely carried out."

Presently about 60% of the world&apos;s nickel resources are tied up with lateritic ores while about 25% of the world&apos;s nickel is produced from sulphides. Based on this the industry has to focus on improving lateritic nickel economics in order to maintain the high use of the metal worldwide. In 1997 three junior mining companies in Australia organised finance against all odds and commenced development of three separate nickel and cobalt extraction plants treating lateritic nickel ores. All three projects utilise similar pressure acid leaching (PAL) technologies while each has unique metal recovery technologies All projects have experienced numerous processing and maintenance related difficulties such that full ore throughput has been reached by only one operation after five years. This shortfall in performance has caused the owners considerable angst and financial pain. In 2000 Cawse went into receivership and was purchased by an international corporation. Recently, Bulong also went into receivership and has undergone an orderly shutdown, awaiting sale to a new buyer. Murrin Murrin has settled with its financiers and is in a position to operate as planned for many years forward. This paper will discuss a number of the technical difficulties that affect the ore preparation, PAL and solution treatment circuits of these plants. The objective is to identify the cause of some of the difficulties and propose possible solutions so that the next generation of lateritic operations can emerge as technically and, more importantly, economic successes. A number of these process improvements have been identified by the existing operators and in many instances have been or are being implemented into the existing operations.

"The Athabasca region forms part of the Churchill province of the Canadian Shield and is underlain by an Archean or Aphebian assemblage of rocks that underwent severe metamorphism and granitization during the Hudsonian orogeny (1750-1950 m.y. ago). In places, the eroded orogen is overlain by unmetamorphosed cover rocks (in-cluding the Martin and Athabasca formations) of probable Paleohelikian age. Basic dykes cut all the rocks of the region.There are innumerable vein-type pitchblende deposits and many syngenetic occurrences of uraninite in crystalline basement rocks. Evidence is presented to show that pitch-blende was emplaced during the final stages of the Hud-sonian granitization and followed the crystallization of syngenetic uraninite transitionally. In terms of P-T condi-tions, the pitchblende deposits belong essentially to Lindgren's mesothermal group.Based on the postulated uranium metallogenesis, the possibilities of finding further deposits of pitchblende and other types of uranium deposits are discussed."

"The development and operation of the milling circuits treating the different Selbaie orebodies are discussed in this paper. The project is reviewed from metallurgical evaluation through construction to present operating status. The current flowsheets are described, with discussion of some unusual features.IntroductionThe Selbaie concentrator commenced initial production in August 1981, treating underground B zone copper ore in a single 1500 t/d circuit. Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

"The precursor of In2O3 was prepared by hydrolysis precipitation/hydrothermal method using In(NO3)3 solution as the feed material and ammonium hydroxide as the neutralizing agent. The crystallinity, morphology and particle size of the products were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET and LPSA. The results showed that the hydrolysis product consists of an aggregate of cubic In(OH)3 particles with a short rod morphology. In the hydrothermal process, the structure, morphology and size of the particles changes through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition, respectively. When the hydrothermal temperature was less than 280 ?, the Ostwald ripening process took place, which changed the morphology of the particles from short rods to cuboids through dissolution-recrystallization. When the hydrothermal temperature was higher than 280 ?, the processes of Ostwald ripening and phase transition took place successively. Firstly, the morphology of the particles changed from short rods to cuboids through Ostwald ripening, and then, the phase transition from cubic In(OH)3 to orthorhombic InOOH occurred and the morphology of the particles changed from cuboids to polyhedron. INTRODUCTIONDue to its excellent electrical conductivity and optical transparency, indium tin oxide (ITO) film has been wildly used in flat-panel display, solar cell, antistatic coating and EMI shielding (Medvedovski et al., 2008). Indium oxide powder is one of the fundamental materials for preparing ITO film. Along with the development of ITO targets of both high density and large size, high quality indium oxide powders, such as single phase, nano-size, spherical morphology and mono-disperse, have been in high demand (Nakashima and Kumahara, 2002; Betz et al., 2006; Kim et al., 2007). The main preparation methods for indium tin oxide or indium oxide powders include chemical precipitation (Nam et al., 2001; Xu and Yu, 2007), melt atomizing-combustion (Chen et al., 2000) and spray pyrolysis (Ogi et al., 2009). Among them, chemical precipitation has been preferred, since it is simple, easy to control and suitable for industrial scale-up. In chemical precipitation method, indium oxide powders were prepared through the following steps: firstly, indium hydrate precursor was precipitated from an indium salt solution by neutralization using an alkali, such as ammonia; and then, indium oxide (In2O3) powders can be obtained from the precursor through calcination (Li et al., 2006), or solvothermal method (Lee and Choi, 2005), or hydrothermal processing/roasting (Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007), respectively. However, the indium oxide powders obtained by direct roasting are polycrystalline, dispersable with a wide size distribution (Liao, 2006). The disadvantages of the solvothermal method are high cost, complicated after-treatment processes, as well as bad performances of the powders (Udawatte and Yanagisawa, 2000). Therefore, among three methods of obtaining indium oxide from the hydrolysis precursor, the hydrothermal process/roasting method is the most feasible to synthesize high quality In2O3 powder with uniform crystallinity and size (Kim et al., 2002; Zhu et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2005; Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007; Seetha et al., 2009). However, current research on hydrothermal process-roasting method has been limited to the synthesis of a certain ITO or In2O3 powders under specific conditions. A systematic study on the phase transition, as well as the change of the morphology and size of the particles in the hydrothermal process is still missing. In this paper, the effects of hydrothermal processing on the mineralogy, morphology and size of products were investigated. The results showed that the evolution of crystal structure, morphology and size in the hydrothermal process was affected through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition successively. These results are novel and have guidance for improving the hydrothermal process for In2O3"

This study aims to recover europium, yttrium metals, some valuable salts or oxides from the white powder (apatite) coating the inner surface of spent florescent lamps (SFLs). Pressure leaching using sulphuric/nitric acid successfully dissolved the metals of interest. Europium or yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen reduction of their oxides. Addition of potassium thiocyanate converted the dissolved sulphates to thiocyanates. Selective separation of Eu and Y was then carried out by solvent extraction from the thiocyanate solution. The used solvent was trimethyl-benzylammonium chloride. N-trihutylphosphate in 1 M nitric acid was used to strip the metal loaded in the organic phase. Results showed that the quality of the cleaned glass tubes of the SFL met the standard requirement for the lamp manufacture. The white powder (WP) is composed of calcium sulphate 35.2%, phosphate 61.5% and oxides of europium and yttrium 1.65%wt. respectively. Autoclave digestion of the WP for 4 h at 120°C and 500 kPa in sulphuric acid/nitric acid mixture dissolved 96.4% of yttrium and 92.8% of europium. The conversion rate of sulphate to thiocyanate was favoured at low temperature. Stripping of Eu and Y from the loaded organic phase behaved in an opposite way. A metal separation factor of 9.4 was obtained. ate recovered europium and yttrium salts were selectively separated using ethyl alcohol or dilute nitric acid. Yttrium was very soluble while europium was not. Europium and yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen gas reduction at 850°C and 1575°C respectively.

"The Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. A site specific rock classification system was developed that characterised all the rock units based on the engineering properties governing the rock mass behaviour i.e. intact rock strength and defect characteristics (spacing, aperture, infilling, wall roughness and weathering) irrespective of the geological origin. This approach simplified the design and the on-site verification processes. Based on this classification system, rigorous quantitative statistical assessments of the available geological information including various laboratory and field testing were performed to derive the geotechnical design parameters for various rock classes. These parameters were used to complete geotechnical designs of retaining wall systems. INTRODUCTIONThe Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The key features include two interchanges, a 300m long viaduct, a large cutting through Sexton Hill with an associated 100m wide Land Bridge and retaining walls reaching 490m long and up to 22m high. This paper focuses on the derivation of representative geotechnical parameters for geotechnical design of the retaining structures supporting Sexton Hill Cutting including bored pile retaining walls and soil nail walls. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Due to the complex geological nature of the site, an understanding of the regional and local geology, the typical behaviour of individual geological units and the implication of onsite variations from design intention are the ultimate challenges to the geotechnical engineer in order to select representative geotechnical parameters for design."

The Ilo Smelter Modernization Project will require treating the slag from the Peirce Smith converters in Slag Cleaning Furnaces using pig iron technology. Currently the slags from the converters show variable magnetite contents. The copper contained in this slag is recovered in Reverberatory Furnaces, where the smelting rate was improved due to the high silica content of the converter slag. Preliminary industrial tests where developed to clean the slag from converters using pig iron. The results showed that the magnetite content has a significant influence in this process. This work describes the actions that are being implemented in the converter operation to control the magnetite content in the slag in order to maintain the high copper recovery of the smelter when the new facilities are commissioned. This task will demand a strong control of both the slag chemistry and converter practices in order to get the copper recovery considered as the design criteria (~97.4%).

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. With copper production .fixed by the onsite electrowinning capacity, the planning and scheduling aspects to optimize the project NPV will be discussed. Some of the logistics, equipment. personnel and process difficulties of operating a mine at 42()() m elevation will also be described. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

I N presenting this paper, the writer wishes to point out some of the difficulties and problems of geological work in that part of Saskatchewan in which outcrops are few. These problems are well known to all geologists who have made investigations in this region, but may not be so well known to those outside. A table of the strata as known in certain areas of Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces is given, with a brief discussion of some of the formations and beds about which there is little knowledge due to their being deeply buried and not exposed in the region. Comment with regard to possible oil and gas structures is made and some features of the structures in the Battleford and Simpson districts are described. The writer wishes to make acknowledgment to members of the Geological Survey of Canada to whose work in Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces reference is made, and to others who have made, or are making, valuable contributions to the stratigraphy of Saskatchewan. Mr. G. C. Webb has kindly furnished information regarding and materials taken from a well bored recently in the Paynton district. Special thanks are due to the Simpson Oil and Gas Company for permission to use much valuable information with regard to their wells and for the generous way in which the officials and staff co-operated with the writer. The opportunities the writer has had to visit many parts of the Province have been in connection with investigations for the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and through facilities provided by the Department of Soils of the University of Saskatchewan. To these Departments the writer accords his thanks. For the purposes of this discussion, Central Saskatchewan may be considered as that portion of the Province extending from Township 16, with Regina, Moose Jaw, and Swift Current situated on or near the southern boundary, to Township 48, with Prince Albert and Lloydminster on the northern boundary. This region includes territory underlain by Cretaceous sediments and excludes the southern portion of the Province, where Tertiary beds underlie the surface and are exposed to an extent sufficient to permit a measure of systematic mapping.

"Neill and Gunter Limited (NGL) has prepared a preliminary design and a cost estimate for a ferric chloride leach plant to recover copper, lead, zinc, and silver from a typical complex sulphide ore. This plant design is specifically intended to treat unconcentrated ground ore (flotation feed), but can be readily adapted to treat bulk concentrates. Samples of ground ore and bulk concentrate were obtained from Heath Steele Mines, Miramichi, New Brunswick, laboratory testing, and preliminary process flow sheet preparation was carried out by the Research and Productivity Council in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Approximately thirty drawings have been produced, including process and equipment flowsheets, process piping and instrumentation drawings, and preliminary general arrangements. Preliminary capital and operating cost estimates were prepared for a plant that would treat 1000 t/d of crushed and ground ore to produce about 30 000 tpy of zinc. Capital and operating cost estimates were also projected for plants up to 4000 t/d of processed ore. Recoveries of 99% for zinc, 98% for lead, and 96% for copper were achieved in laboratory tests on unconcentrated ore. These recoveries were higher than the overall recoveries obtained from bulk concentrate, yielding approximately 10% more revenue.A 1000 tonne per day plant was determined to have a low return on investment, however, depending on the size and type of mining operations employed and the FCL plant throughput. DCF-ROI projections of 20% to over 30% were calculated for 100% equity financed “green field” mine, mill and FCL plant operations of 2000 t/d and higher"
