Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with a product during its life cycle. LCA is identified as the most reliable method for verifying environmental impacts; however, current LCA-based approaches have certain limitations for environmental analysis of construction products. Integration of the LCA methodology with Discrete Event Simulation (DES) provides a sound framework for modeling and analysing the environmental impacts of construction products. LCA and DES is one possible combination for analysing the cause and effect of various scenarios where time, resources, and randomness of input variables affect the outcome and, therefore, has the potential to address the shortcomings of LCA in construction. Recent studies in disciplines other than construction such as manufacturing systems have revealed positive effects on evaluation of environmental metrics while integrating LCA with DES; however, this integration has not yet been applied for environmental analysis of construction products. By implementing LCA data in a DES model, this research proposes an environmental model of earthmoving operations in a case study. Environmental variables are simultaneously assessed with production variables in the same simulation model and the integration of DES and LCA is discussed.

I T IS one of the unwritten policies at Preston Mines that we examine closely any method or tool that will help us in our constant battle against rising costs. It is our personal conviction that most work methods can be improved. Therefore even though the job went well yesterday, it does not necessarily follow that it should be done by the same method today. With the arrival of the natural gas pipe line in the Porcupine area it was obvious that we would have to take a good look at the possibilities of using this source of fuel for plant heating. • Steam presently generated at Preston is for heating purposes only, no process steam being required. Prior to the fall of 1960, the heating plant consisted of two low pressure, coal-fired, fire-tube boilers, operating at an approximate pressure of 14 pounds per square inch. These boilers were underfed by stokers and could be operated either singly or together. ~o. 1 unit was a horizontal return tubular boiler, registered at 100 h.p. No. 2 unit was a fire-box boiler, registered at 75 h.p.

"The reservoirs of Mississippian Mi-dale beds and Frobisher beds found in the Weyburn field lie at the north-western termination of a broad productive belt extending 120 miles along the northeastern rim of the Williston basin. These carbonates, and inter-bedded evaporites, originated during cycles of marine transgression and regression, and were deposited as rock types characteristic of shoal, lagoon, and basinward shelf environments. The Frobisher-Alida Beds, which form a secondary reservoir to the main Midale Beds of producing zone are composed of oolit1c, fragmental-bioclastic, vugular limestone capped by an impervious dolomitic mudstone. Production is controlled by localized structural features resulting from de-positional build-up. Excellent reservoir conditions are accompanied by an active water drive. The Frobisher Evaporite, consisting of massive primary anhydrite with dolomitic veinlets, forms the floor seal for the Midale beds oil accumulation. A significant facies transition into an oolitic, bioclastic, vugular limestone characterizes this unit. Beyond the depositional margin of the evaporitic facies, marked increases in porosity and permeability of the en-tire reservoir are noted. Carbonate units overlying the areal extent of the Frobisher Evaporite exhibit a greater degree of metasomatism, dolomitization, and more abundant secondary anhydrite.Porous carbonates comprising the producing zone of the Midale beds are divided into an oolitic, fragmental bioclastic, vugular limestone, and an overlying granular marly lime-stone unit, capped, by the Midale Evaporite. Oil is accumulated in a stratigraphic trap bounded above and be-low by primary anhydrite and truncated by the post-Mississippian erosional surface. Mississippian strata dip basinward from this erosional surface in a broad homocline exhibiting only minor irregularities. Rapid lateral and vertical porosity and permeability variations are common. Localized, separated, porous lenticles contain interstitial water in areas where the Midale beds are underlain by the Frobisher Evaporite. The major portion of the field, however, is capable of water-free production. Bottom and edge waters are found in certain portions of the field. Productive limits are tentatively defined around most of the present field perimeter. A large area along foe southern edge of the field remains open to future development. Probable ultimate remaining recoverable crude oil reserves, as of September 30th, 1958, were estimated by Mc-Daniel Consultants Ltd. to be in excess of 330 million barrels."

"The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) has been developed by Search Minerals to extract nickel and cobalt VALUES (from nickel laterite ores (saprolites) and Caron plant residues. The technology consists of sulfuric acid atmospheric leaching of the ores or residues followed by neutralization and recovery of nickel and cobalt. The acid addition is carefully controlled to maximize nickel and cobalt extraction while minimizing overall consumption of acid by various gangue reactions. The final recovery processes can be tailored for maximum economic benefit. The use of resin-in-pulp processing is advocated as the most cost effective method for initial recovery of nickel and cobalt from lower grade materials. INTRODUCTIONCommercial processes for laterite ore treatment vary according to laterite type and local conditions. The two general categories of laterite ore are saprolites and limonites.Saprolites are generally treated by pyrometallurgical processes for reduction of nickel to matte or ferro nickel alloys. The high cost of drying, chemical reduction and electric furnace smelting requires that the saprolite grade for economic processing is of the order of 1.8% nickel or higher. There are of course large amounts of saprolite that fall below this “cut-off” grade that are not currently economic.Limonites can be treated by the Caron Process which involves drying of the ore, a reduction roast of the whole ore to reduce nickel and cobalt (and some iron) to the metallic state followed by ammonium – ammonium carbonate solution to leach nickel and cobalt. Nickel and cobalt recovery are low (70-85% for Ni and 20-50% for Co). The Caron plant tailings therefore contain high levels of unrecovered nickel and cobalt. Relatively few plants have used the Caron Process and new installations are not anticipated due to the high energy cost of drying and reduction roasting. Nevertheless, plants in Brazil (Niquelandia), Australia (Yabulu) and Cuba continue to operate.The high pressure acid leach (HPAL) process was pioneered at Moa Bay in Cuba in the 1960’s in the treatment of limonites. In the 1990’s the HPAL process was touted to revolutionize the nickel industry with low capital and operating costs for new installations. Murrin Murrin, Cawse and Bulong in Australia were started and in each case the technical difficulties of operating at extreme temperature and pressure conditions and the challenges in “ramping up” a complex hydrometallurgical facility conspired to cause these plants to fail economically. At present, Cawse and Bulong are closed and Murrin Murrin continues to operate after undergoing a financial restructuring."

An arsenical ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite was heated to a temperature at which decomposition and distillation took place. The condensate consisted of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide, although the analysis of the ore showed that volatile arsenic and sulphur were present in proportion to produce a condensate of arsenic trisulphide and sulphur. Distillation tests on the mineral arsenopyrite also produced a condensate of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide. This arsenic sulphide gave a distinct x-ray diffraction pattern which was not listed in the A.S.T.M. data file. This same sulphide can be produced by heating a mixture of arsenic and sulphur in vacuo. Its chemical analysis corresponds to As2S2. The dissociation pressures of arsenopyrite and the vapour pressures of arsenic disulphide and arsenic metal were measured, using a quartz "spoon" gauge. "IntroductionTHE GOLDFIELDS AREA in northern Saskatchewan has be-come important in recent years because of numerous discoveries of pitchblende. The area is underlain by rocks of Precambrian age and, because of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, the geology in the vicinity of the pitchblende deposits is exceedingly complex and presents a challenge to all geologists •working in the district. This paper is a contribution to the geological literature of the area and presents a description of rock types, supplemented with petrographic, chemical, and spectrochemical data.Field work in connection with this paper was carried out during the summers of 1948, 1949, and 1950 while the writer was employed as assistant geologist for the Crown Corporation, Eldorado Mining and Refining ( 1944), Limited, Gold-fields area. Laboratory work was undertaken at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the winter months of 1949-50 and 1950-51 and extended through the summer of 1951.With the exception of SiO2and FeO, all of the new analyses ( 1) presented were carried out by quantitative spectrographic techniques under the supervision of Dr. L. H. Ahrens at M.I.T. Many of the techniques have only recently been developed at that Institute and detailed laboratory procedures have not yet been published."

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. In September, 1953, seismographs were installed in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta and British Columbia to study the 'bumps' which were occurring in the coal mines at Fernie and Coleman, and to investigate the possibility that they might be related to minor earthquakes in the area. During the initial phase of the work, three seismographs were operated at widely separated stations, two in the region of coal mines at Coal Creek and Coleman and one at Turner Valley, distant from any mining operations. Some earthquakes were recorded at all three stations and, in addition, many small disturbances were recorded by the seismographs located near the mines, especially -by the instrument at Goal Greek. A closer network of radio-linked seismographs was then in-stalled near Fernie, the records of which definitely established that the small disturbances were occurring in the mine workings, both active and inactive. No relationship was established between bumps and local earth-quakes in the area. This work was initiated as a -co-operative effort with the Fuels Di-vision of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, which has undertaken a study into the phenomena of ground stress relief in underground mine workings.

"The Éléonore mine, located in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec, generates a gold bearing flotation concentrate rich in pyrrhotite. Direct leaching of the finely ground concentrate results in high cyanide consumptions and poor recoveries, so effective pre-treatment to passivate the pyrrhotite is required before leaching. Following a number of process upsets at the mine, test work was performed to better understand the requirements for passivation so a more effective operational strategy could be implemented. This paper outlines the testing and implementation of the new strategy at Éléonore.ÉLÉONORE CONCENTRATOR The Éléonore mine is located 800 km north of Montreal, in the James Bay Region of Quebec, Canada. The ore, containing gold disseminated in sulfide minerals and free fine gold in silicate gangue, is crushed in a two-stage crusher plant before being ground in a single 9,000 kW ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit, with about 25% of the cyclone underflow passing through a gravity plant with two, 48” Knelson concentrators. Gold recovery in the gravity circuit varies between 15 and 20%, with gravity concentrate leached daily in an Acacia intensive leach reactor. Cyclone overflow, at a target P80 of 65 microns, flows to the flotation plant where the gold bearing sulfide minerals, mainly pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite, are recovered to concentrate with a mass pull of about 5%. The flotation concentrate, typically containing between 80 and 120 g/t of gold, is thickened and finely ground using a 1500 kW Isa Mill. The finely ground concentrate is diluted, to generate a slurry with about 32% solids by weight, before feeding the leach plant. Initially the concentrate slurry is pre-treated with oxygen and lead nitrate, to passivate the sulphide minerals before cyanide is added for gold dissolution. Gold is recovered from the leached slurry using carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The flotation tailings are also thickened and gold is recovered in a dedicated leach-CIP plant."

Cu-0.8Cr-0.1Zr alloy were prepared by atmospheric melting. the microstructure and properties of the CuCrZr alloy after first cold rolled, solid solution, second cold rolled and aging treatment were analyzed by using optical microscope, electrical conductivity analysis and Vickers hardness tester. The results show that with the increase of the first cold rolled deformation, the grain breakage becomes more serious, and the cold hardening becomes more obvious and the hardness increases. The conductivity and peak hardness of the first cold rolled (reduction of 30% and 60%) alloys after solution, secondary cold rolled and aging treatment reaches 81 %IACS and 187 HV, respectively. However, the conductivity in the CuCrZr alloy with a higher rolling degree (reduction of 90%) after solution, secondary cold rolling and aging treatment is significantly higher, and the conductivity and peak hardness is 85.8 %IACS and 178 HV, respectively. INTRODUCTION CuCrZr alloy has been widely used in domestic industry for its excellent comprehensive properties such as high strength and high conductivity, especially in the contact wire and lead frame of high-speed railway (Sun, Tao, & Lu, 2015; Mishnev, Shakhova, Belyakov, & Kaibyshev, 2015; Zhang et al., 2016; Fu et al., 2017). In recent years, a lot of research has been done on how to improve the strength and conductivity of CuCrZr alloy. However, the high strength and high conductivity of copper alloys are contradictory characteristics. On the one hand, the addition of alloying elements is conducive to solution strengthening and aging strengthening; on the other hand, too much alloying elements in copper alloys cause defects in the lattice of copper matrix, resulting in a serious decline in the conductivity of copper alloys (Martienssen & Walirmont, 2005). How to obtain high strength and high conductivity at the same time is the main problem. At present, the main research methods are adding microalloying elements, thermomechanical treatment and severe plastic deformation to study the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of CuCrZr alloys. For example, Xie et al. (2011) added trace Ag to the Cu-0.26 wt%Cr-0.08 wt%Zr alloy, and the size of precipitated phase Cr and Cu4Zr became smaller and the mechanical properties of the alloy were improved. Su, Dong, Liu, Li, & Kang (2004) found that the addition of trace Mg in CuCrZr alloy inhibits the growth of precipitated phase and reduces the internal stress around the precipitated phase. At the same time, the size of precipitated phase becomes smaller and the peak aging strength of the alloy is improved. Pang et al. (2013) found that adding trace Ni and Si to the CuCrZr alloy could improve the peak hardness, softening resistance and precipitation morphology of the alloy. Experiments shows that the grain size was significantly refined by equal channel angular extrusion combined with aging treatment, while the strength of the alloy was increased, and the electrical conductivity of the alloy did not decrease (Vinogradov, Patlan, Suzuki, Kitagawa, & Kopylov, 2002; Saray, 2016); Kermajani, Raygan, Hanayi, & Ghaffari (2013) showed that the strength of CuCrZr alloy can be improved by rolling at 500 °C. After 150 minutes of aging treatment, the strength and conductivity of the material increased to 431 MPa and 81 %IACS, respectively. Takata, Ohtake, Kita, Kitagawa, and Tsuji (2009) noted that the strain hardening, uniform elongation and tensile strength of the nano-precipitates produced by the mechanical heat treatment process can be notable enhanced. The mechanical and electrical properties of CuCrZr alloy can be improved by combining large plastic deformation with aging treatment in the test process (Gao, Huttunen-Saarivirta, Tiainen, & Hemmila, 2003; Huang et al., 2003; Xia et al., 2012; Zel’dovich et al., 2014).

"A lest apparatus has been developed for obtaining the relations among confining stress, porosity and percolation rate for hydraulic sand backfills. The apparatus can also be used to evaluate internal drainage characteristics and the effects of partial saturation on percolation rates. The test apparatus, test procedures and typical test data are presented in this paper.IntroductionAlthough the standard percolation test has become an accepted method of evaluating the drainage characteristics of hydraulically placed tailings backfill, it is recognized that the test results require considerable interpretation due to the following factors: (I) The results can be markedly influenced by varying sample preparation procedures, which vary the amount of material segregation in the sample . In particular, a thin layer of slimes on the top of a sample can control the flow of water into the sample. Wall edge effects can also affect the test results. (2) The in-place porosity of the backfill is not duplicated in the test sample and empirical formulae must be used to estimate the variation of percolation rate with porosity. (3) Internal drainage characteristics and the percolation rate of partly saturated fill cannot be evaluated in the standard percolation test.In addition to eliminating these problems, the compression percolation test apparatus also provides additional data on the mechanical properties of the backfill. Compressibility (or bulk modulus) is measured at different stress levels during the course of a test and this information can be used in evaluating the usefulness of the fill in providing ground control and in limiting ground subsidence. The engineering design of mine backfill is becoming an important part of the over all design of underground mine operations. The design problems are sufficently different from conventional civil engineering soil mechanics problems that new test methods and design procedures are required."

Gold occurrences have been known in the La Ronge Domain for many year . Mineable reserves have more recently been outlined and there is every prospect of a major gold camp being established in the domain within this decade. The La Ronge Domain lies in the Lower Proterozoic 'Trans-Hudson Orogen' and is part of a collage of Early Proterozoic crust comprising volcanoplutonic arcs, batholiths, associated volcaniclastics and volcanogenic sediments lying between the Superior Craton to the outheast and the reworked Archean basement/Aphebian cover terrain to the northwest. The domain has several lithostructural subdivisions, the most important of whjch , from a gold exploration point of view, is the Central Metavolcanic Belt. This belt is composed dominantly of a range of metavolcanic rocks and gabbroic to granitic intrusives, which geochemically resemble younger subduction-generated 'primitive' arcs developed on oceanic crust. U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates that the arc volcarusm and pre- to late-kjnematic plutonism occurred about 1890 Ma to 1850 Ma ago. The belt has an attained grade of upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and is relatively undeformed , though high strain zones occur locally. Most gold occurrences in the La Ronge Domain have been found in the Star-Waddy Lakes area of the Central Metavolcanic Belt, and in the Sulprude-MacKay Lakes area to the south which is interpreted as a tectonically dismembered part of the main belt. Both tratiformand vein-type gold occurrences are present in the domain; vein-type predominate and form nearly 90 per cent of the occurrences. The stratiform-type occurrences show a regional lithological a sociation with iron-rich sediments within proximal felsic volcanjc sequences. Some vein-type occurrences appear related to brittle fracturing associated with intrusive emplacement (the magmatic-hydrothermal "syn:' and "subvolcanic" veins) and faulting. However, most of the vein-type occurrences exhibit a spatial association with regionalscale ductile shear and other high strain zones, and were probably formed by metamorphichydrothermal processes.

"Among other components, ore body „T“ was discovered in the Bor pit copper mine at a depth of app. 500m. The ore body is relatively small: 60-65m long, 40-45m wide and up to 50m high, but with an extremely high content of copper and accompanying metals. The rock mass containing the ore body is composed of altered andesite of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. The exploitation of this ore body by way of conventional mining methods was associated with high risk, cost, and potential losses of the rich ore. Due to everything specified hereinbefore, the adopted solution involved ore exploitation with complete ensuring of excavation stability, thus forming an extremely large underground opening. The excavation and supporting were performed according to the NATM principles along with applying shotcrete, 9-25 m long cables, and horizontal and vertical lattice girders. The excavation of the ore body was completed in app. 2.5 years, all the while ensuring complete stability and security of people and equipment; construction works were constantly monitored. The proposed solution for ore excavation enabled more than 95% exploitation of ore as requested by the Investor, while depletion due to waste-rock excavation was less than the allowed 5%. INTRODUCTIONThe Bor copper deposit is located in Eastern Serbia. Copper exploitation in Bor commenced as far back as 1902. A total of 26 ore bodies varying in size and valuable mineral content have been excavated so far. One of the most recent excavated ore bodies is ore body „T“, which is one of the smallest bodies by volume, but also a body with one of the largest content of copper and accompanying metals. An important fact regarding its exploitation is that it is located at a depth of app. 500 m; that its shape is irregular: 60-65 m long; 40-45 m wide and app. 50 m high; and that it lays within a rock mass of relatively poor physical-mechanical characteristics. In addition, above it, in its immediate vicinity, ore body „F“ was previously excavated and its room was refilled with backfill and water. Excavation methods common in mining practice (excavation with caving, excavation with backfilling, excavation with protective pillars) were inadequate in this case for various reasons:• The immediate vicinity of the previous ore body „F“ room could cause expansion of the caving zone also to that room, along with penetration of groundwater and flotation sludge;• Possibility of deformation expansion caused by caving as far up as the surface of the terrain, including the urban area;• Difficulties in maintaining the stability of excavation sidewalls having steep slopes and great height;• Significant loss of ore mass with a relatively high content of metals etc."

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

A series of experiments were carried out in an effort to develop a universally applicable mathematical model of the hydrocyclone classifier. The design and operating variables studied were: cyclone diameter and height, the inlet, vortex finder and apex diameters, the feed pressure and the solids content of the feed slurry. The model consists of four basic equations which express the cut size ( dso), volumetric split between overflow and underflow, volumetric throughput, and sharpness of separation in terms of the operating and design variables. Although empirical, the model is nevertheless in general agreement with fundamentally derived models. The model clearly 1•eveals the effect of the major variables on the operation of a hydrocyclone. Because of its broad data base and the inclusion of all the major variables, the model may be used without experimental data to predict the operation of cyclones over a wide range of different operating conditions. With operating data, the equations may be modified to serve as an operational model.

"This paper provides background information on the expansion programs of Rio Algom Limited at Elliot Lake. Included are details on the Quirke expansion program, the Panel mine rehabilitation program, including the selection procedure for the tailings containment area, the Stanleigh mine rehabilitation program, housing, government regulations and the Environmental Assessment Board hearings. Introduction After 2Y2 years of public hearings, 4 years of arbritrating differences of opinion between our engineers and government licencing authorities, interspersed with research into radium removal and development of the LAMIX process and carrying out the work associated with some 24 control orders issued to us by the MOE, it is very difficult to compress all of the experiences and frustrations into a single paper. The highlights, as they relate to the expansion programs of Rio Algorn Limited and its affiliate, Preston Mines Limited, will be covered. Denison Mines Limited, of course, is the other uranium producer in Elliot Lake. They are currently in the process of expanding from 7,000 to 11,000 TPD by the second half of 1980 and then to 15,000 TPD by the mid 1980's. "At the time of this study, the Valley mine was producing 23 000 tonnes of ore per day from a large, low-grade porphyry copper orebody. Sulphide mineralization, principally bornite and chalcopyrite, occurs in a stock work of quartz veins in one phase of the Guichon Creek batholith. The property was explored from 1967 to 1982, and was placed in production in 1983.Using a three-parameter lognormal approximation developed by G.F. Raymond at Similkam een and Mount Isa Mines, a geo- statistical conditional probability ore reserve was estimated prior to mining. Comparisons with blasthole kriging and milled ore for the first 17 months of production showed close agreements at all cut-offs between conditional probability estimates and mineable ore. This was not true of either kriging or polygon estimates. An important part of this work was identifying and correcting for bias in both exploration and blasthole samples.IntroductionCominco's Valley lake deposit is a large, low-grade, porphyry copper orebody in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. Total indicated plus inferred ore reserves are 700 M tonnes at ore grade of 0.47070 Cu. At the time of writing, ore milling is at a rate of 23 000 tI d through the old Bethlehem mill. Mining is in 10m horizontal benches using 9.8 m3 shovels and 90 tonne trucks. Since this paper was written, Valley and nearby Lomex have been combined into Highland Valley Copper with a combined oreproduction of about 120 000 tI d.Copper mineralization, principally bornite and chalcopyrite, is regularly distributed throughout the deposit as disseminated low-grade within a granodiorite host rock, and as higher grade veinlets within a stock work of near-vertical quartz veins generally 10 cm or less in width. It is likely that problems with sample variability and sample bias are mainly related to mineralization within quartz veining. Valley geology has been described in detail by Allen and Richardson and by Osatenko and Jones (2). "The Afsin-Elbistan coal deposit with its 3.4 billion metric tons of reserve is the biggest coal basin and one of the most important resources for electrical energy production in Turkey. The coal deposit is located north of Elbistan, Kahramanmaras Province, in southeast Turkey (Fig. 1).The Kislakoy sub-basin of the Afsin-Elbistan basin was selected as the first open cast mine to feed four power station blocks of 340 MW each. The mine is equipped with six identical bucket wheel excavators of the type Sch Rs (2300/5) 32. The annual coal demand of the power station is 18.5 million metric tons. The Elbistan basin encompasses an area of 900 km2, and its centre lies about 1150 m above mean sea level. The sedimentation took place mainly in the upper Pliocene period. The thickness of the coal bed varies from 20 m to 60 m, respectively. The basal part of the coal beds consists of clay, marl and sandy clay. These formations are overlain by gyttja, which may also occur in the form of calcareous ooze, enveloping coal beds. The thickness of the gyttja is up to 35 m (Otto-Gold, 1969). The coal of Afsin-Elbistan is soft coal and the quality has been found to vary considerably throughout the deposit. The thicknesses of the sterile intercalations vary from 0.50 m to 2.2 m and average 1 m in thickness. From the quality control point of view, the coal seam is regarded as upper seam where the gyttja formation occurs as sterile intercalations, and lower seam where the clay formation occurs instead of the gyttja (Fig. 2). The CaO content of upper Kislakoy coal is very high, grinding resistance is low and base to acid ratio of ash, that is, the ratio of acid oxides of metals to base, is greater than one (Ural and Onur, 2001). Contrary to upper Kislakoy coal, CaO content of lower Kislakoy coal is very low, grinding resistance is high and base:acid ratio of ash is smaller than one. Modified Impact Strength Index (MISI) tests are used to determine the grindability of the Elbistan coals (Ural, 1999)."

About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.
