Systematic studies have been conducted at the University of Toronto in order to evaluate lanthanide extraction from clay minerals from different geographical regions. It was found that rare earth elements (REE) are easily recovered into an aqueous solution via an ion exchange mechanism by leaching with electrolyte solutions containing monovalent cations under ambient conditions. In this study we assessed extraction levels of individual REEs as a function of initial clay composition and leaching conditions. It was found that, in spite of variations in clay origin, all clays consistently reached peak REE extraction levels with fast kinetics. However, terminal extractions were clay-specific. The feasibility of using seawater as a leaching solution and potential synergies with ammonium sulphate as a lixiviant was also investigated. Seawater was found to be inferior to using ammonium sulphate, and provided no observable synergy in leaching performance when used together. The aqueous phase trapped in leached clays was shown to contain significant amounts of REE, as demonstrated in clay washing tests. Techniques to improve the REE concentration in leachate through process variations were investigated. However, it was found that most techniques capable of increasing REE concentrations in the resultant leachate also resulted in reduced REE extraction.

Recently constructed circuits have included multiple stages of columns in a variety of applications, from roughing to cleaning. The Miduk copper concentrator (in south-eastern Iran) is one of the unique mineral processing plants which use column flotation cells as rougher. As the bulk of final concentrate is produced by rougher columns, optimized metallurgical performance of these cells is crucial. This paper will present the study and optimization of, a froth washing system of columns. For this purpose, the cross-sectional area of orifices was increased and their orientation altered. Concentrate assay for copper and silica, in addition to bias rate were found to be the assessment criteria. Modification of the wash water system resulted in increasing the purity of rougher and final concentrate. Negative bias and short-circuiting of wash water into the concentrate launder were the main causes of improper froth zone washing in the former system.

"10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

"A multi-seam underground mining operation employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods provides 35 per cent of Smoky River's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes) from the Smoky River coal field. Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity, which has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief to the area, has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Coal transportation to the central preparation plant incorporates a 3 km long underground conveying system. The company is committed to efficient resource recovery and a safe and healthy working environment. Introduction The Smoky River Coal operations (SRC) are centered in the Smoky River coal field located in west central Alberta, some 360 km west of Edmonton and 20 km from the Town of Grande Cache (Fig. 1). Combined mining operations produce 2 million tonnes per year run-of-mine coal from which 1.65 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile, coking coal are obtained. The underground mining operation, employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods, provides 35 per cent of SRC's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes). Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief in the area. This has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Background Exploration of the Smoky River coal field took place over four decades commencing in 1926. McIntyre Mines Limited (parent to Smoky River Coal Ltd.}, commenced development of the property in 1968 having secured a long-term contract for the delivery of coal to Japan. Production of underground coal at Smoky River commenced toward the end of 1969 and has been continuous on the property since that time. Originally, two underground mines were opened. Original planning envisaged the use of room-and-pillar techniques to develop blocks of coal for subsequent extraction by longwall retreat mining. Following initial development, two longwall units were established, the first in November 1970 in No. 5 Mine and the second in February 1971 in No. 2 Mine. Difficulties were experienced on both units, and production commitments could not be achieved. The longwalls were discontinued, and mechanized room-and-pillar was subsequently used for all underground mining."

"The management of acid rock drainage( ARD) to prevent impact when tailings are disposed of in the environment requires understanding of the phenomena giving rise to acidic drainage, a rigorous evaluation of the weathering characteristics of the tailings, and the successful implementation of control measures that will be effective in the long term. This paper provides a brief theoretical background to the complex reactions taking place in mill tailings containing residual sulfide minerals which must be appreciated to enable waste characterization program to be effective in predicting the future behavior of the tailings and in designing control methods which will work. "Canadian sulphide deposits generally have characteristic compositions. Metal associations in ore deposits and in igneous rocks are similar.Nickel: sulphur ratios, copper-nickel ratios, and nickel :cobalt ratios in copper-nickel sulphide ores are characteristic for most orebodies. Nickel, as sulphide, is highest in ores associated with ultrabasic rocks, whereas copper is highest in ores associated with gabbros. Cobalt is relatively constant. The metal ratios in copper-nickel ores are due, first, to the composition of the related igneous rock or magma; second, to the partition ratios of the metals into the sulphides when separating from the silicate rock or magma; and third, to the conditions at the time of deposition. Each factor is discussed and the evidence indicates the Frood orebody is a magmatic segregation in place and Falconbridge is an injected sulphide melt. Many Canadian orebodies containing copper, zinc, or lead also have relatively constant compositions. •Copper and zinc are concentrated in gabbro and diorite, and copper-zinc ores in northwestern Quebec are spatially related to gabbros and diorites. The same three factors con-trolling metal ratios in. copper-nickel deposits should control the metal ratios in copper-zinc deposits if the metals come from the gabbro-diorite intrusions.The ratios of base metals in common sedimentary rocks are not similar to the ratios in orebodies. Base metal elements are mobilized during high-grade metamorphism, but much fundamental research is needed before the relation between metamorphism and ore deposits can be established on a sound basis. The distribution of elements in sulphide orebodies suggests that cop-per, zinc, and lead are deposited simultaneously .in relatively constant proportions rather than successively in a paragenetic sequence. Zoning may be due to different ratios of metals being deposited under changing temperature, pressure, and chemical environment, or may be the result of other processes."

Introducing online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers in the mining and processing industries can lower costs and improve the representativeness and speed of analysis. The applicability of the CON-XTM industrial conveyor XRF analyzer for continuous measurement of potassium content in process materials was demonstrated at various stages of potassium muriate (MOP) production. The CON-X analyzer produced reliable and accurate results for sylvinite ore (27–36% KCl), MOP cake after flotation (88–97% KCl), and NaCl residue (1.5–5% KCl). Tests of the analyzer at an MOP-producing plant showed a < 0.5% difference between online and laboratory results.

Abstract - The Okinawa trough is an active back-arc-spreading center in which submarine hydrothermal exhalation (black chimneys) and sulfide mineralization are forming. Fluid inclusion composition in minerals of the hydrothermal feeder zones in the JADE field shows that the hydrothermal systems are extremely gas-rich. There are two independent and co-existing fluids, CO2-hydrocarbon and saline fluids. Microthermometry and Laser Raman Microprobe (LRM) analyses on individual fluid inclusions of the CO2-hydrocarbon type, dominated by CO2 and containing minor CH4, C2H4, C2H6, N2 and H2S, are almost equivalent to the fluid inclusion composition of a natural gas field. The saline fluid is mainly composed of H2O and contains minor Na+ and K+. It is close to a H2O-NaCl, or H2O-NaCl-KCl system, with salinities from 3.7% to 7.5% NaCl eq. Before venting on the seafloor, the fluids experienced immiscible separation. One of the end-member fluids is downward circulating seawater that interacted with sub-seafloor rocks. The other was gas (volatile)-rich fluid derived from a shallow magma chamber. The immiscibility separation of fluids resulted from the decrease of temperature and pressure of the hydrothermal system and continuous input of magmatic volatiles. The saline fluids in this system are discharging to form sulfide chimneys and black smoke. Meanwhile, CO2-rich fluid discharges as CO2 bubbles through hydrate pipes. A large amount of CO2-CH4-H2S gas or fluid in the upper part of the hydrothermal system, and reaction of this gas or fluid with saline fluids, finally enables the accumulation of metal sulfides.

Steeply dipping seam refers to the coal seam with dipping angle in the range of 35?55°, which is well recognized to be very hard to mine by the mining industry all the world. In the last two decades, some fundamental researches were focused on the strata behavior of long-wall panel, complicated rock mass breaking process of the steeply dipping seam, overburden stress field developing and evolution, rock strata breaking and moving process, rock structure stability mechanism and control. Results show that it?s presenting macro stress arch-shell (MSAS) of the stress distribution of the overlying rock in steeply dipping seam. The MSAS is the spatial distribution of intensity envelope line under the strength criterion and has the geometry shape asymmetry as well as the stress distribution heterogeneity. The arch- shell base will forward as the working face mine forward and the shell roof will extend to higher overlying strata above the gob. In this paper, the stress arch-shell analysis model and coordinate system were established and analyzed the inclined masonry structure at different zone. Analysis results show that the rock damage at the key part of the arch-shell is the main factor which causes whole overlying rock structure failure. The rock structure instability modes have tension instability of the shell roof, compression-shear instability of the shell shoulder and composite instability of the shell base, meantime, instability coefficient is proposed to determine instability condition. The above research results enrich the complex coal seams mining theory and provide a theoretical basis for mining safely and efficiently in steeply dipping seam.

A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. Intelligent ore delineation refers to the ability reliably to characterize the geological setting of a mineralized body and its grade distribution. This necessitates using all available geological information in a timely and efficient manner, such that effective geological control is achieved. The importance of geological control is paramount to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of underground mines. As a result, the development of new geosensing tools designed to provide more reliable and timely information should be a priority. However, as the sensing tools advance then so, too, must the decision support system in order to allow the full benefits of these tools to be achieved. One potential system considered able to provide this architecture is ’true 3D-GIS’ (Geographical Information System). GIS promises to provide a seamless data flow and to connect information currently unavailable to the underground mine operations by bringing together previously disparate and spatial data sets in a visually effective and timely way. This paper considers the potential revolution GIS offers over the flow and use of data in mining by focusing on the integration of geosensing data and GIS to facilitate intelligent ore delineation.

"Scandium International Mining Corp (SCY) has been involved in the commercial development of its Nyngan Scandium Project for about ten years. Various studies at a variety of global R&D organizations have been carried out in an attempt to define the deportment of scandium in both the limonite as well as the saprolite phases of Nyngan ore to assist with process development. Technologies such as sulfuric acid baking, high pressure acid leaching, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid atmospheric leaching and heap leaching have been extensively investigated both at the bench and pilot scale level to arrive at the most economic process flow sheet that will be discussed in some detail in this paper. Solvent extraction, ion exchange and other refining technologies have been tested and an optimum configuration has been established for the Nyngan project which is expected to be the first primary scandium mine and metallurgical plant in the world.Because of a lack of product availability the current scandium market is limited to less than 20 tons per year. Technologies have been identified to produce product with different specifications for aluminum alloys and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Preliminary economics have identified that Nyngan will be a robust and low capital cost project that can readily be expanded as the size of the scandium market increases."

Arsenic is an unresolved problem in the mining industry considering the fact that most of the new copper deposits have high arsenic contents; stricter environmental restrictions for handling, transporting and processing complex materials are expected and stable abatement of arsenic is not extensively applied. In 2018 Chile produced 24.5% of the total copper from concentrates and in the future copper production in Chile is expected to increase, mainly associated with production of concentrates that will also contain more arsenic. China has set an import benchmark of maximum 0.5% for arsenic content in copper concentrates and this value is expected to be more restrictive in the future. On the first day of 2018 China banned the importation of scrap. Blending practice has been a business option, but it is not sustainable in the future, as “normal” copper concentrates become less and less clean. By the end of 2018, Chile formulated new regulations, increasing the capture of SO2 and arsenic to 95%. In order to comply with these regulations Chilean smelters had to make large invest large amounts of money. Disposing of arsenic as a stable residue is a pending issue. EcoMetales is a 100% subsidiary of Codelco and provides the mining industry with environmental solutions. It has a plant near Calama in Chile that treats flue dust from smelters, refinery effluents and acid solutions from acid plants. EcoMetales is fully committed to contributing to the solution to the arsenic problem. Currently we are developing four main projects: 1) Concentrates treatment. A PLCC project considering the treatment of 200 ktpy of copper concentrates with arsenic from the northern district of Codelco; 2) EPAS DET project considering the treatment of 700 m3/d of weak acid solution with arsenic from the of El Teniente devision of the Codelco acid plant; 3) Borras project, considering the recovery of valuable metals (Cu, Ag, Ge, Pb) from the flue dust leaching plant; 4) Tailings project, considering the recovery of metal values from tailings. The purpose of this work is to present the trends and treatment processes for arsenic handling in the copper mining industry with a focus on the scorodite process. INTRODUCTION Between 2000 and 2015 the global copper concentrates production has grown from approximately eleven to fifteen million metric tons per year. Chile produced 26.5% of the total copper from concentrates and in the future copper production in Chile is expected to increase, mainly as a result of the production of concentrates (Figure 1)

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. "The Acheson D-3 Pool was discovered in August 1950, and contains 88 producing oil wells on 40 acre spacing. Initial oil-in-place was 118 million stock tank barrels and initial well potentials averaged 2,000 barrels per day.In early 1956 studies of hydraulic interference between the Acheson and Leduc D-3 Pools were conducted on the Carter Petroleum Reservoir Analyzer. These studies indicated that the natural water drive to Acheson would be incapable of replacing reasonable withdrawal rates over the life of the pool. To avoid shrinkage losses a scheme of pressure maintenance by water• injection was therefore instituted in March 1957.This pressure maintenance scheme is notable because pressure is being effectively maintained by high volume injection through one well located on the flank of the pool. Close control on reservoir behaviour is maintained by regular bottom-hole pres-sure surveys and observation of water cuts on producing wells. No evidence of pressure gradients or channelling of the injected water has been observed to date, and the water-oil contact has remained level over the whole field. It is possible to control the average reservoir pressure within very close limits by varying the rate of fresh water injection.Ultimate recovery estimated from the rise of the oil-water contact and calculated water influx to December 31, 1958, is 335 barrels per acre foot, or a total of 91.4 million barrels from the pool. This compares to 217 barrels Per acre foot or a total of 59.4 million barrels indicated from laboratory test data."

Considerable thought and discussion had been devoted toward provision for increased milling capacity at the Allenby concentrator of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company operations as early as 1940. During the war, plans for the installation of an additional grindi.ng unit were formulated but were not carried out. It took considerable time after the war to prepare the mine again for its highest rate of production since, with the scarcity of men, development work had been sacrificed in favour of maximum ore shipments. In order to prepare for the expected competitive market in copper, the matter of increasing the capacity of the concentrator was again given serious attention. As ore became available in the mine and the output of the mill was increased, limitations for a satisfactory recovery were observed, due to the overloaded condition of the classifier units at the higher tonnages. From a metallurgical standpoint, the ore from the Copper Mountain mine had always been difficult to treat on account of the finely disseminated character of much of the mineralization and the difficulty of grinding to the desired fineness. This trouble has become aggravated with time as an increasing amount of wall-rock has diluted the ore and lower grade orebodies have been mined. It therefore has been, and is, the practice at the concentrator to maintain the maximum amount of reduction in size of material fed to the flotation units as is possible for the daily tonnage to be milled. This means that all the grinding units are operated for the maximum possible time, and that the classifiers are regulated to return as much feed ?as possible to the mills. The number of tons to be milled for ?the day is determined by the concentrator superintendent after ascertaining the availability of ore from the mine, the condition of the concentrator ore bins, and the need for repairs in the rolls plant. In order to maintain the tonnage des1red, hourly estimates are made of the rate of grinding by weighing the amount of ore contained on one foot of each of the belts conveying the feed to the various ball-mills, and adjustments are made accordingly.

Objective, accurate, and fast assessment of damage to buildings after an earthquake is crucial for timely remediation of material losses and safety of occupants of buildings. Laser scanners are promising sensors for collecting geometrical data regarding the damaged states of buildings, as they are able to provide high coverage and accuracy at long ranges. Yet, we have limited knowledge on the performance of laser scanners for detecting earthquake damage, and requirements of such data collection. This paper focuses on characterizing the performance of laser scanners for detecting thin cracks for damage assessment of reinforced concrete frames. We identified a series of crack parameters based on the state-of-the-art damage assessment codes and standards. Similarly, we identified parameters, which affect the performance of laser scanners for detecting cracks, based on prior research in this area. We studied the width, depth, and orientation of cracks; sampling interval of the scanner, and the range of the laser beam from the surface. Effects of these parameters on the detection of the minimum crack size were determined in an experimental setting. An automated algorithm was used to analyze the data. The results show that it is possible to detect as small as ~1mm cracks.

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

Intermetallics exhibit unique solidification behaviour due to their chemical longrange order. This includes, for instance, generally slow solidification kinetics, and in some cases, an anomalous partitioning behaviour. In the present work the electromagnetic levitation technique - complemented by theoretical modelling - is used to explore various aspects of this behaviour, as observed in solidification of B2 phase in undercooled melts of the Ni-Al system. Moreover, a phase-field model is developed and used to illustrate the effect of chemical order on the solidification kinetics of a B2 phase in a model system. The phase-field model provides an additional basis for the simulation of solidification microstructures in intermetallic forming systems. Both experimental studies and theoretical work signify the role of chemical order in solidification of intermetallics.

This paper deals with the practical problems as sociated with blasting a heated pillar remnant. This pillar remnant was the final stage in the blasting of a multi-stag e pillar blast. Production from the previous stages had produced burning sulphide ore, resulting in high rock temperatures in the final unblasted stage. This is an account of how, under difficult conditions, the pillar remnant was blasted.
