Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). Experience has shown that the E-Type multiple indicator kriging (MIK) estimation technique often works well for resource estimation in stockwork mineralisation that contains a mixture of high and low-grade mineralisation types that are difficult or impossible to separate spatially. E-Type MIK, like ordinary kriging (OK) is a smoothing estimator and where data is sparse can result in estimates of grade tonnage curves that do not reflect the true block variability at selective mining unit (SMU) scale. The rank and replace (RR) estimation methodology is designed to reproduce both local block accuracy and true block variability at SMU scale and has shown good results when used with highly skewed unimodal diffusive style mineralisation. This paper examines the use of RR with mosaic style mineralisation typically found in stockworks via a case study using real data from Newcrest’s Telfer West Dome deposit. Resource level estimation results for ordinary kriging (OK), E-Type MIK and RR are compared to close spaced grade control models as the reference reality.Results show that stationarity requirements and declustering can severely impact on the usefulness of the rank and replace technique and that it should only be used where trends are not too strong and data are relatively uniformly spaced. This does not rule out its application to stockwork or mosaic style deposits. However, in this case, the presence of trends and different data densities requires the non-stationary domain to be further broken down into sub domains for the RR technique to be effective.CITATION:Kentwell, D and Finn, D, 2017. The present The Zinc ODrporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) tailing dam (Site C) is expected to reach its terminal capacity late in 1985. Planning and design of new facilities for disposal of tailing after 1985 which includes new tailing dams (Site D) commenced during 1980. This paper briefly describes planning guidelines and specifications, location considerations, environmental aspects, operating strategy, engineering specifications, envirormental aspects and scheduling of works.

The past decade hap seen revolutionary advances in com-munications and information-handling techniques which have been stiriulated by "cold war" military requirements and by, current programmes for probing into outer space: The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration, methods. These are (1) The development of new approaches, based on information theory, for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and (2) The use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered NR. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.

The initiation of cast Pentolite primers by detonating cord has been examined by the combination of two different experimental techniques with computer simulation by the finite element hydrodynamic code DYNA2D. In the first type of experiment, the cord/primer system was placed in a water aquarium, and photographed using a high-speed image converter camera. This highlighted the emergence of the detonation front through the primer surface and the generation of shock waves in the surround- ings. Numerical simulation was used to interpret the experimental record, establishing where the cord had induced buildup to detonation inside the primer. The second experiment used the plate dent test, where the primer was placed in contact with a block of metal (here aluminium), with the resul- tant dent in the metal surface being a measure of primer output. Detailed numerical simulation of this test confirmed that the observed dent was caused by the development of a complex series of shock waves inside the Primer.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

Goldsworthy Mining Limited is currently mining iron ore at an annual rate of 7 million tons from several small orebodies, each of which exhibit wide variations in iron, phosphorus, silica and alumina contents. Each orebody is mined at its average ore reserve grade and therefore mine planning and grade control techniques have had to be tailored to achieve a constant production blend.

The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. An exploration and preliminary mine design contract was undertaken in Thailand to establish whether adequate lignite resources existed for the addition of future power generation plant through to the year 2000. The lignite ranges in heat value from 14 to 24 MJ/Kg (air dry basis) and occurs in 2 major seams consistituting measured reserves of 536 Mt (with an ash cut-off level of 45 % on an air dry basis) and a strip ratio of 4.1 bank cm/t. The paper describes the pre-planning, programming, equipment used, project management, logistics and exploration methods adopted to undertake the contract in a monsoonal area using Australian drilling and geophysical contractors.

The exploration industry generally has a low opinion of the quality of the service supplied to it by government departments. In particular, the academic research-related emphasis of the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the relatively low level of explora- tion assistance offered by several Mines Departments are of concern. In a number of areas of geoscience research, the industry perceives a mixup of priorities and a lack of understanding on the part of governments as to its needs. While government's sights are, and should be, set on the future needs of the community at large, the industry doubts that government budget allocations to the BMR and Mines Departments are either large enough or being cost-effectively spent. This is certainly the case for such areas as exploration assist- ance, provision of basic exploration data, and applied geoscientific research. On balance, the exploration industry's perceptions are misguided in a number of respects because of a lack of communication with government. However, this reinforces the need for changes in the manner in which govern- ment departments communicate with industry and, in particular, the criteria upon which research priorities are based. At a time of contracting oil and mineral exploration expenditure, and near-record levels of geoscientist unemployment, the government's role is critical and should be open to question.

The tunnel alignments investigated for the Gosford Regional Sewerage Scheme are located in the Terrigal Formation and are covered for most of their length by a thick blanket of soil and weathered rock. The following techniques were found to be most effective in geotechnical investigations for tunnelling in this area: air-photo interpretation, seismic surveys to pinpoint drilling targets, in-situ measurements of strength,deformation modulus and permeability in cored holes, and the construction of rock- mass models. Cross-hole seismic modulus measurements, surface resistivity soundings and electric well-logging techniques were found to have limited applicability due to adverse local conditions.

The screening of iron ores, sinter and coke, and investigations undertaken to improve screening efficiency and cloth life are discussed. The major modifications to coke screening proposed with the construction of No. 7 coke ovens battery are briefly described. The major problem areas were identified as screen cloth blinding and pegging, feed presentation and screen overloading. Blinding and pegging have had a significant effect upon screening efficiency with the screening of sinter, coke breeze and wet iron ores in particular. Pegging can be reduced or eliminated by the correct selection of aperture size and shape, screen excitation and slope, and screening medium. Blinding encountered with wet coke breeze was a particular problem in which no significant progress was made.

The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. The synergetic mixtures of polymers have been proposed to be used as modifiers, ie polyacrylamide (PAA) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylamide with industrial lignosulphonates (LST)

In recent years, the value to Australia of the introduction of a system of resource rent taxation on the mining industry has been frequently debated. The forms that this rate of return based tax could take, and the impli- cations on government revenue and mining com- pany profitability have been discussed at some length. Further, the selective application of this taxation scheme to certain mining industry sectors has received considerable attention. This study takes the form of a survey of the taxation history of one significant Australian mining venture, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The conditions faced by this company during its history are used as a base for the imposition of rent taxation schemes. Comparisons are drawn between the historical taxation liability of the company and that which would have been incurred if a resource rent form of taxation had been in existence. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that while the company can be con- sidered to have been a successful enterprise during most of its history, it has not achieved a level of profitability which would warrant the collection of any form of excess profits Tax.

This paper presents the findings from an experimental study of the effects of shock and gas penetration breakage mechanisms in rick blasting. A blasthole liner method, which realistically seperated these two basic sources of energy in blasting, was developed and utilized. The use of four different explosives with contrasting detonation behaviour produced a wide variation in the nature of explosive energy transfer to the rock. Through extensive field experiments it was found that, relative to low VOD dynamite, the high VOD emulsion imparted greater shock to the rock and therefore produced finer fragmentation and greater back damage. The comparatively lower heave energy of the emulsion caused less immediate blast results were obtained with watergel and ANFO explosives, which have detonation behaviour and energy partitioning charecteristics lying between emulsions and dynamite.

Operating difficulties during 1977 with the Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at their Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter were found to be caused by premature softening of sinter in the upper shaft of the furnace. This soft- ening was shown to be a consequence of raw materials and operating policies which led to unusually high levels of both lead and silica in a sinter of low basicity. A programme of softening tests and micro-examination of a range of sinters established that premature softening occurred when lead and silica increased to the point where a lead-calcium silicate with a low lime content became the major continuous phase in the sinter. This information was used to define a range of compositions which kept the softening temperature acceptably high for furnace operations.

Controlled Source Audio Magnetotelluric (CSAMT) surveys were carried out by Glass Earth (New Zealand) Limited (Glass Earth) in 2006 - 2007 to investigate epithermal gold targets in the central North Island of New Zealand. The surveys were conducted using a Zonge GDP 32 8-channels receiver and a Zonge XMT 32 transmitter powered by a 16 KW generator. The electric field dipole was maintained at 20 m length (five dipoles per 100 m spread) and the frequency ranged from 4 KHz to 4 Hz. Only scalar (TM mode) signals were recorded, using one magnetic coil per spread. The transmitter bipoles were 1 - 4 km in length and located about 5 to 10 km from each survey area.   Sixteen individual target areas were surveyed by June 2007. The CSAMT survey lines (100 - 400 m spacing) were determined mainly on results from previous ultra-detailed airborne magnetic and gravity surveys conducted by Glass Earth in 2005. The data from each CSAMT line was carefully examined to remove any spurious signals and processed using Zonge SCS2D software, which can produce smooth 2D resistivity inversions of the field data. The results were presented as resistivity sections and maps to help the identification of exploratory drilling targets, mainly from the existence of subsurface high resistivity zones (resistors) that can be interpreted as caused by silicification associated with epithermal mineralization.   An example of processing and interpretation of the CSAMT data is presented in this paper on results from Glass EarthÆs Tahunaatara target, where CSAMT surveys have identified zones of epithermal mineralization confirmed by exploratory drilling.
