The concept of hydro power in deep mines is based on the exploitation of the hydrostatic head that can be gained as refrigerated cooling water descends in shaft pipe columns from the surface, to provide hydraulic power for machines at the working face. This paper describes the work done on two important aspects of the controlled distribu-tion of the high pressure water within a mine, namely the control of pressure under normal operating conditions, and the control of flow in an emergency situation following a pipe breakage. Suitable methods of control have been determined using theoretical techniques to model the steady and unsteady flow behaviour of the water in the pipeline, and taking into consideration the environmental constraints on the types of control devices that can be used. The preferred approach is one in which the high pressure water itself is used as the control medium. The control valves themselves can be fairly conventional in design, but in the case of pipe break protection it is shown that a less conventional approach based on the use of a hydraulic fuse gives improved control performance.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely unenvisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge'of a sixteen billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36% of Australia's primary energy

A method of raising has been developed at Cobar Mines Pty Ltd's CSA Mine which has achieved advance of up to 6 m in a single blast and raises are now developed which have averaged 4.2 m per blast. The method is a form of Long Hole Raising and is applicable to short raises of less than 50 m length. Blast holes are column charged and initiated sequentially with short delay detonators (millisecond). The equipment used to drill the raising blast holes consists of normal production drilling rigs and accessories and no other special equipment is required. The method has significant advantages in rates of performance and fits neatly into production drilling and blasting schedules. The method is also far safer than any non-mechanical or conventional means of Raising.

For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

The treatment of the Broken Hill ores has,undergone many changes during the last ten years, and it may be of interest to some of the members to know what are the main lines on which the Proprietary Mine works at present. It must be understood that the want of absolute uniformity in the treatment amongst the various mines at the Barrier does not prove that some of the mines are working on wrong lines, for the ore is not exactly the same along the whole line of lode; this necessitates a variation in treatment, although generally only in detail.At the Proprietary Mine the ore is all mined by contract the miners are paid so much per ton for clean ore. The ore in the mine in most stopes is mixed with gangue, and the inclination of the uliners is, of course, to mix gangue with the ore, so as to be paid for as large 3 tonnage as possible. This is quite natural clean ore is easily distinguishable from clean gangue, but most lumps are a mixture of clean ore and gangue in varying proportions. The miner will naturally throw into his heap pieces which he considers still good enough, whilst the management may consider these pieces just a trifle too poor; consequently a check must be kept on this.This necessitates the first operation to which the ore is submitted. This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

Some mqre facts and inferences are presented in amplification of a recent paper on the geology of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile stressing the volcanic origin of its rich gold ores, some of which are considered tobe exhalites. Previously unpublished and largely unmapped pyroclastic features in carbonated and chloritized, but not in amphibolitic, country rock are brought to attention. This applies particularly to the main host, viz. the relatively coarse-grained quartz dolerite greenstone (Q. D. G.), i.e. Golden Mile Dolerite, and gives more credibility to the spatial association of the rich Green Leader and telluride ores with bodies of sediments and tuffites occurring within, or adjacent to, Q. D. G. There may be an intrusive relationship with contiguous mafic amphibolites of doleritic origin, but this is not certain and can only be resolved by morecomprehensive mapping than in the past. Volcanic features have always been recognized in CalC Schist, i.e. Paringa Basalt, more so recently in the shape of coarse volcanic breccia.Iu the subsequent deformation of the gold ores since their inital emplacement there appears to be a structural parallel with some Canadian base-metal deposits, most of them of volcanogenic origin.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. (equivalent total pressures being 2·70 in. w.g. and 1·20 in. w.g.) ;

The population and the per capila consumption of mineral resources have both grown dramatically during the century past. It is argued that growth will continue through the century ahead but that the magnitudes of undiscovered resources are probably adequate to meet demands. The challenge that the mineral explorer of the future will face is finding deposits beneath several kilometres of barren rock.It is further argued that the principal challenge that society will face in the century ahead is the amelioration of environmental stress.

Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

The carbon reduction of tantalum pentoxide was investigated in a plasma-arc furnace. The sample was a mixture of tantalum pentoxide and graphite, vacuum pressed into a briquette and was reduced at about 3100¦C. Argon was used as the are gas. The optimum mixing ratio of carbon and tantalum pentoxide, C/Ta205 is 5.10--5.15. The sample, weighing 7 g is fused within 60^ 70 seconds by plasma-arc heating and the reduction of molten tantalum oxide with solid carbon pro- ceeds rapidly to approximately 99.5 % Ta during this period. The reduction that follows in the molten state is slow. Within about 10 minutes, the maximum tantalum content of the massive metal product reaches 99.9 % and the oxygen and carbon remaining in the product are 50 ppm and 400. 500 ppm respectively.

Gold mineralisation at the Hamata prospect is related to a series of stacked pyrite and quartz-pyrite veins associated with a number of shears which strike N to NE and dip E. Mineralisation is contained entirely within the Morobe Granodiorite close to the intersection of the Upper Watut Fault and some younger NE to SW striking faults. The prospect was originally detected in 1987 by a regional stream sediment sampling programme. Subsequent mapping and sampling outlined an anomalous zone approximately 900m long by 300m wide. Drill testing has indicated a resource of 46Mt at 0.9 g/t Au.

Research and Technical Services, Department of Mines Western Australia The nine papers received for this technical session cover a very wide range of hydrological problems in various parts of the world. Three of these papers deal with hydrological predictions for new mines, while three are concerned with the prediction of water chemistry. The three remaining papers deal with gas injection as a dewatering tool, discharge formulae verification and the use of a physical model to predict subsurface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining. Hydrological problems in mine planning represent a major risk in many mining operations, booth as a potential life or equipment hazard and a major financial risk. The initial paper selected to review was therefore one by the president of a gold mining company, rather than by one of the specialist scientists, to remind us all that the main reason problems are faced and overcome in the mining industry is usually a commercial one. In one commercial undertaking, the ability to accurately assess future risk is a highly desirable planning tool and hence in mining, the ability to predict the nature and magnitude of hydrological problems is n i-an varxi imnnrfant

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

In 1980 Pancontinental Mining Limited decided that while the Jabiluka uranium project was still a major focus of the company's efforts some diversification was necessary. At this time it was decided to include precious metals in Pancon's exploration and acquisition objectives. As a result the now Paddington Gold tenements were acquired, explored and developed. Today, it rates as the 6th largest gold mine in Australia and at an expanded throughput of 1.2 million tonnes per year of ore it will produce about 110,000 ozs of gold per year. Following extensive exploration activities by Pancon's Exploration Division the Operations Division continued with development drilling finally proving up a reserve of about 8.4 million tonnes at an average grade of 3.2 g/t. An in- house preliminary feasibility study was followed by a two phase feasibility study by Davy McKee. This resulted in a recommendation to the Pancon Board of Directors to develop Paddington with an annual throughput capacity of 875,000 tonnes. The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

The research, development and testing of a Blast Control Plug (U.S. Pat. #4,754,705) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy is described. The plug's function is to improve blasting efficiency through the enhancement of stemming effectiveness and thereby reduce drilling and blasting costs. The plug comprises a solid unit placed in the blast hole within the stemming column above the explosive. It is designed for use with back filled drill cuttings or any other suitable material The research and development program comprised the testing of the plug in small diameter holes in competent rock for both bench and crater blasting configurations and full scale field trials in multiple hole and row blasts using blast holes of from 76 to 387 mm in diameter. Test measurements included stemming displacement and velocity, face movement and extent, peak air over pressure and ground surface peak particle velocity. Data acquisition equipment included a Spin Physics SP2000 high speed video motion analysis system, and acoustic and seismic monitoring units. Substantial reductions in stemming ejection velocity or ejection elimination were achieved whilst reducing stemming length by up to 35% over conventional practice. Peak air blast pressures were also reduced by between 8 and 25 dB. A strong inverse relationship between rock face movement and stemming ejection velocity was found. The implications of the importance of stemming effectiveness in blasting and computer blast simulation is also addressed.

Consider these four questions:What is the definition of life-of-mine?When should life-of-mine planning seriously commence?When can life-of-mine planning seriously commence?What is the key input to effective life-of-mine planning?Whilst there is likely to be general consensus on the answers to the first three questions, the answer to the fourth question is open to debate. On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.
