KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

This paper reports on the results of several years of monitoring rehabilitation at a silica sand mine on the Swan Coastal Plain, south of Perth. Mining here occurs below the regional watertable and leaves a post-mine landscape of dredge pond voids (pit lakes) with surrounding battered slopes. The restoration we recommended was to develop the pit lakes as wetlands of regional analogue and value. Several different restoration techniques have been applied to re-vegetate pit lake slopes over many years which have enabled an evaluation of reasons for success/failure of different restoration approaches. Learning acquired clearly showed the benefits of using fresh topsoil for restoration over topsoil that has been stockpiled for several years. Most topsoil used in restoration was from seasonal wetlands and consequently restoration was most successful in the riparian zone from the edge of pit lakes to about 2 m vertically above the water table. Topsoil restored areas above this level remained poor in plant species and cover. Conversely, remedial seeding/planting proved largely unsuccessful. Permanently and seasonally flooded pit lake margins recolonised relatively quickly and successfully with native sedges and rushes. Development of rehabilitated upper slope plant communities over time was evident with loss of typical wetland species and greater growth and survivorship of upland and dampland plant species on mid to upper rehabilitated slopes. Plant communities of lower slopes showed a converse pattern of development, with a shift towards a more typical wetland composition. We believe matching topsoil to site and development of topographic profiles similar to natural wetlands of the region are the keys to optimising restoration success of sand mines with shallow water tables.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Modern petroleum refining offers a complexity of environments, each requiring different metals for the satisfactory performance of-the various sections of the refinery, and this paper first outlines the varied enva.x¦on-ments thus met.It follows that the metal types in use will also vary to suit each particular environment, and the paper' consequently covers the use of ferrous-metals, ranging from plan carbon steels to the high alloy types and the non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and its alloys.The failures of some,of these metals and alloys are then illustrated by experiences it Kwinana. These failures are duo to (a) corrosion, (b) erosion, (c) faulty welding, and (d) mechanical defects,' of which the first is by far the most prevalent. The protective measures taken to prevent subsequent failures are then given under one or other of the following headings :(1) alterations in process conditions, (2) the use of alternative ,alloys,(3) suitable heat treatment, (4) redesign of the failed section, (5) cathodic protection, and (6) use of corrosion inhibitors.Reference is then made to the use of specialised metals and alloys.Metals, generally in the form of oxides or salts, are also used as catalysts in refining processes. Activated alumina is used, combined with silica .forScracking' of heavy oils, and as a support -for platinum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and similar metals, which catalyse hydro-genation and dehydrogenation-processes. .In the final formulation of petroleum products metallic compounds may be added. Reference is made to the large quantities of lead used by the petroleum industry and to the use of metallic soaps and detergents in the formulation of lubricating oils and greases.

In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.

Capricorn Copper Pty Ltd (CCPL) are operating the Capricorn Copper Mine located at Gunpowder, Queensland. As current holder of the environmental authority for the site, CCPL have obligations to rehabilitate areas of the mine that are no longer operational and have the potential to cause/contribute to environmental harm. CCPL sought a voluntary Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) to provide an agreed program of works to cap and rehabilitate the former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility. The voluntary TEP contained conditions that were required to be met, to reduce the potential for environmental harm from the facility. The former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility commenced use in the early 1970’s, and is an unlined valley in-fill structure, contemporary in design compared with other such approved structures of the era. The decommissioned Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility, now known as the Old Tailings Storage Facility (Old TSF), has been a legacy source of contamination due to the existing capping not meeting modern cover criterion, and allowing oxidisation and infiltration to the underlying acid forming tailings resulting in Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from the facility. A cover design for the Old TSF, and other mine waste storages onsite that required clay capping, had been proposed by previous operators. Under the TEP cover design phase, it was identified that a key constraint was the lack of significant quantities of low permeability clay onsite. The lack of available clay prompted the consideration of alternate lining materials for the Old TSF, with a Bituminous Geomembrane Liner (BGM) being adopted as the preferred alternative. The BGM compared favourably with clay-based materials on seepage analysis, and led to other benefits by eliminating the need for borrowing clay off site, reducing the site’s environmental footprint, and reducing construction time. The BGM cover system on the Old TSF is being monitored with the intent to use this as a case study to confirm expected performance, enabling the cover design to potentially be adopted on the remainder of the site’s mine waste storages that require capping.

With the increased variability of todayÆs large-scale mining operations, consistent flotation performance is important to improving and sustaining overall recovery through the circuit. The Newcrest Telfer Mine has implemented advanced process control technology to obtain stable level operation and consistent mass pull in the copper rougher and scavenger flotation circuits. The final result has been an overall reduction in variability, which impacts on both copper and gold recovery. This paper describes the methodology and implementation of the improvements in control at the Newcrest Telfer Mine as being an essential part of the business for minerals processing.

The planning, design and construction of a service tunnel, under a major arterial road between two hospitals are described. The multiple uses of the tunnel combine to provide a favourable cost-benefit ratio for the tunnel as part of a rationalisation of services between hospitals. The driven tunnel provides economic, program and approval advantages over that of a cut and cover construction. The cross sectional shape of the tunnel was determined during feasibility studies by the degree of weathering of the Silurian mud- stones, the shallow cover and the proposed excavation equipment as well as the functional requirements. The site investigations covering geotechnical, building, noise and level surveys provided input to the design documentation and construction phases. Monitoring of settlement levels and primary support stresses during early construction stages confirmed the adequacy of the proposed tunnelling methods and support to be used adjacent to the major building foundations. The 140 metre long tunnel was success- fully completed in April 1980 at a cost of $650,000.

Base-metal sulfide refractory gold ores often contain a portion of ‘free’ gold that is amenable to recovery using gravity concentration methods, whilst the refractory portion of the gold is better recovered using flotation. The decision as to whether a plant treating a refractory gold ore should utilise gravity concentration or a flash flotation circuit (or a combination of both) within the grinding circuit is usually made at the design stage of flow sheet development. Very limited data is available in the published literature which provides an industrial scale comparison on which to base such a decision and conventional laboratory testing methods are often the only way of obtaining such data. The optimum processing route will also be mineralogy dependent.This paper presents the findings of operating a refractory gold plant with either flash flotation (normal operation) or a combination of flash and gravity recovery methods treating the cyclone underflow stream and will demonstrate the regions of the recovery profile that each contributes to. Size-by-assay analysis has been performed on a number of streams around the operating plant to gain an insight into the changes that occur when the gravity circuit is in operation in addition to the flash flotation circuit. The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.

The Eagle on the Hill tunnels form part of an upgrade of Mt Barker Road, 15 km to the southeast of Adelaide. The upgrade significantly improves safety and reduces delays on this major road, which winds steeply through mountainous terrain. The twin tunnels each spanning 15 metres run in parallel for a length of 480 metres. The tunnels are excavated in slightly weathered high strength slates and very high strength quartzites of the Saddleworth Formation on the western margin of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Steeply dipping slate cleavages and the high fracture ratio result in many slope stability problems in the project area. The level of geotechnical investigation undertaken prior to the calling of tenders for the project was extensive. This included the excavation of a pilot tunnel along one of the tunnel alignments, which allowed accurate mapping and rating of the rock, resulting in an increased level of confidence during the tender process. One of the features of the winning alternative tender design was the use of canopy tubes, flexible steel ribs and shotcrete to replace up to 40 metres of deep portal cuts in unstable rock with driven tunnels. Slope stability issues were overcome with the use of rock dowels and shotcrete. The support concept allowed the safe driving of the tunnel portals with as little as two metres of overburden. The design incorporated lining drainage and criteria for fireproofing based on European experience to ensure the ability of the tunnels to remain stable in the case of a severe fire incident. The support design allowed for maximum flexibility with a range of support types able to deal with the varying ground conditions. Design development and support refinement continued throughout the tunnel construction phase with close liaison between the designer and the constructor. Monitoring and review of feedback from the construction site by the Sydney based design team was easily achieved by means of electronic transfer of photographic and survey information, telephone and fax communication and regular site visits. The contractor for this project is Macmahon Concrete Constructions Joint Venture (MCCJV) and the designer is Connell Wagner. Excavation commenced in January 1998 with tunnel breakthrough having been achieved in early-August 1998 and mid-September 1998 respectively. Concrete lining construction is scheduled for completion in April 1999.

Electroslag remelting (ESR) today and into the future, will still be the main process for producing high-quality ingots by suppressing segregation, not just refining chemical composition from impurities. This paper analyses state-of-the-art electroslag refining with a focus on ESR with consumable electrodes, and recent technology with liquid metal supply (ESR LM) in view of their refining abilities and development trends, taking into consideration that the size of the ingots required by industry continues to grow, and the composition of new materials sophisticates to withstand increasingly higher mechanical and temperature loads . The yield of suitable metal in large ingots produced by conventional casting is low due to problems of element segregation by height and crosssection. For example, conventional ingots for nuclear powerplant rotors today reach nearly 700 t in weight. Attempts to directly replace such giant ingots with big-diameter ESR ingots weighing approximately 400 t were also unsuccessful because of growing segregation. Modern ESR equipment and technologies produce 200–250 t of ingots of satisfactory quality, reaching 2.5 m in diameter, implementing the change of consumable electrodes during remelting to increase ingot length. Another way to mitigate segregation is to enlarge the smaller diameter ESR ingot by a 500– 800 mm coaxial layer to the desirable diameter by ESR in the current-supplying mould (CSM). Modelling and experiments prove that refining from impurities and non-metallic inclusions at ESR most effectively occurs at the slag bath and liquid metal pool interface because the ESR LM has provided the same desulfurisation. ESR’s special refining capabilities in CSM come from the much longer time of LM residence shown at titanium purification from hard-melting nitride inclusions that are unremovable in vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and electron beam melting (EBM). Implementation of ESR technologies in CSM, especially with LM supply, is prospective to produce heavy enlarged and hollow forging ingots with prevented development of segregation due to dividing cross-section and reducing overheat of solidifying metal.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma.. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these "primary" components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

It is not often that mines have as much warning of the approach of bad ground conditions as was the case at the Western Mining Corporation, Kambalda Nickel Operations Lafranchi/Schmitz Decline. Most aspects of this operation are in fact quite unique and like the best solutions, the answer to the problem of weak and foliated ground conditions was relatively simple; requiring the use of readily available explosives although the idea of using it in this manner may not be the most obvious.The use of high shock energy POWERGEL 2131 cartridges proved to be the correct answer, in conjunction with small changes in drill pattern design. The resulting lack of overbreak bears testimony to the success of the concept and the commitment of the miners to achieving a safe working environment.

The 500 orebody in the upper levels of Mt Isa Mines in north-west Queensland was mined by sublevel caving and block caving from 1962 to 1969. The hot and reactive rock mass of this orebody provided significant mining challenges including ground temperatures above those resulting from the geothermal gradient. Recently Xstrata Copper has been studying the potential to mine this orebody by modern caving techniques. Part of the study process has included re-accessing the ore zones for diamond drilling and trial development. A cross-cut trial drive, the first primary development into the orebody in more than 30 years, encountered a temperature increase in development holes from low sixties to almost 80¦C in less than 10 m advance. The issues associated with managing this risk include sourcing suitable quantities of reactive ground explosives for a single small heading and the temperature limitations of the explosives and detonators. Risk management outcomes included controls to mitigate the safety and reliability risks relating to misfires. The control that dealt directly with the challenge of continuing development in elevated temperature ground was to cool the holes before and during charging. The most effective and practical cooling medium proved to be water. Rapid rock temperature recharge time meant cooling had to continue as close to firing as possible. Reticulation systems were constructed to allow cooling to take place up until withdrawal for firing. No misfires occurred with the cooling system and additional controls in place. This proved that developing safely and effectively in the elevated ground temperatures of the 500 orebody is practicable.

PanAust’s Phu Kham copper-gold operation (Phu Kham) in Laos is currently limited by throughput in the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill. The ability to accurately predict SAG mill throughput (throughput) is therefore critical to accurately forecast copper and gold production. During the fourth quarter of 2016 the proportion of hard unweathered rocks in the mill feed increased, resulting in a period of lower than expected throughput. These low throughput rates prompted a study with the aim of identifying a practical solution for throughput predictions. The study identified an empirical modelling approach based on actual SAG mill throughput rates. The empirical model was then optimised by linear programming to identify the ideal feed blend of unweathered rocks to achieve a maximum SAG mill throughput.Rock strength was the initial focus of the throughput study at Phu Kham because previous studies had identified a strong link between rock strength and throughput. It was determined that there was insufficient valid data to adequately model but sufficient data to qualitatively characterise rock strength. The data identified that the weathering and lithology had a controlling influence on the rock strength. Complicating throughput predictions were operational improvements (changes to blasting and mill settings) implemented in response to the lower than expected throughput. This created uncertainty with the throughput equations. A self-learning empirical modelling method was developed to predict the throughput by incorporating fundamental rock properties with operational practices and improvements. The method is based on the proportion of mill feed with similar weathering and lithology (a proxy for comminution performance) and the actual mill throughput using the SAG mill as the analytical instrument. The modelling method simultaneously incorporated the sum and interaction of unmodelled influences including blasting, crushing and mill settings. The empirical modelling method worked at Phu Kham because the lithology and weathering has an intuitive and observable controlling influence on SAG mill throughput. Secondary steelmaking (or ladle metallurgy) has been developed as a post- steelmaking ladle treatment to produce steel of superior quality. Its rapid growth has resulted from quality improvements, productivity increase, operational flexibility and process route economics. Advances in secondary steelmaking are very impressive during the past decade, and many commercial systems have been developed for performing one or more of the following unit operations: degassing, atmosphere regulation, reheating, refining with synthetic slag, rinsing gas treatment, injection of solid materials and alloying. The metallurgical requirements imposed by the current competitive steel market include more precise analysis tolerances, minimum level of detrimental elements, improved cleanness, demanding service performance and better processability. In most cases, these requirements could only be realized by the application of appropriate secondary refining facilities. Continuing developments in simplicity of design, cost advantage, quick cycle time, improvements in peripheral services such as refractories, instrumentation and in-situ analysis, extensive exploration of new applications, and the use of computer, can be expected. An exciting future is predicted for the widespread adoption of secondary steelmaking to perform most of the major refining functions over a variety of steel quality. It will also become a vital link in the total steelmaking process for production of tonnage steel at the large integrated steelworks and the mini-steelmills.

Al2O3 in natural iron ores generally occurs in goethite, kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and iron carbonate. When the content of alumina in sinter increases from 1.11 per cent to 3.50 per cent, the reducibility of sinter decreases with the addition of four different types of alumina. When gibbsite and kaolinite are added, the low temperature reduction disintegration (RDI+3.15 mm) of sinter increases with the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Furthermore, when adding pure reagent alumina, the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent will increase the RDI+3.15 mm of sinter. The addition of ferric oxide–alumina spinel with the Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent, also increases the RDI+ 3.15 mm of sinter. The influence difference is results from the change of the mineral composition and microstructure of sinter because of the occurrence state of Al2O3. Under the condition that Al2O3 content of sinter is 2 per cent, the porosity of sinter with kaolinite is 37.26 per cent, and the shape is irregular. When gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, the porosity of sinter is about 16 per cent, and the pores are round. When pure reagent alumina is added, the porosity of sinter is 17.49 per cent, and the pores are regular and small. When kaolinite, gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, platy calcium ferrite is mainly formed in the sinter, and some of it is columnar calcium ferrite. On the other hand, when pure reagent alumina is added, in addition to platy columnar calcium ferrite, acicular calcium ferrite is also formed in the sinter.
