The recovery of precious metals from heap leach solutions can be accomplished by two processes: 1. The Carbon Adsorption Process 2. The Merrill-Crowe Zinc Precipitation Process A brief review of the relative process economics is made. Each process presents certain design considerations that must be addressed during the evaluation and engineering design for the project. Discussion is presented on the design criteria for each process.

EVER since the technique of quenching metals and alloys from the melt (splat cooling) was perfected a decade ago, it has been recognized that the grain size of products solidified by this technique may be extremely small.' The further observation that fcc metals quenched from the liquid state contain very few dislocations has led to the inference2 that metals are subjected to negligible or no stresses during the rapid solidification characteristic of the "gun" or "piston-and-anvil" technique. Evidence for the incidence of appreciable densities of stacking faults has, however, been obtained in case of some splat-cooled fcc and hcp alloys,3 although not for pure metals. In the light of these earlier observations it was considered desirable to study X-ray line-broadening effects, if any, in fcc metals rapidly cooled from the melt. In the present work pure silver (>99.99 pct), aluminum (>99.99 pct) and lead (>99.9 pct) were quenched from the liquid state from temperatures about 50°C above the melting point by the "gun technique" and the resulting foils were subjected to X-ray examination in a Philips Diffractometer. The quenched foils (up to -10 u thick) did not generally stick to the substrate surface and could be easily transferred to the Diffractometer without introducing any plastic deformation. The profiles of the first five reflections from the foils were recorded in each case with Cu Ka, radiation at the slowest available scanning speed of 1/8 deg per min. To correct for instrumental broadening, profiles were also recorded from the metals annealed in vacuo at suitable temperatures. The integral breadths of the X-ray reflections were arrived at by a procedure described earlier.' There was a distinct suggestion of preferred orientation in the recorded intensities of reflections from aluminum and lead foils. Such an effect was not observed in case of silver. In addition, the integral breadths of X-ray reflections from splat-cooled aluminum and lead were not significantly different from those recorded for the annealed metals. The analysis was therefore continued only for silver where the X-ray line broadening was appreciable. The pure diffraction broadening, B, was evaluated for each X-ray reflection (hkl) from silver from the observed, B, and instrumental, b, breadths with the aid of each of the three equations due to Scherrer,5 Anantharaman and Christian,6 and Warren and Biscoe,7 respectively: Bs= B-b BAC=B- b2/B Table I gives the values of particle size, 71, the lattice strain, E, arrived at by the use of the following well-known relations and on the assumption that all observed diffraction broadening could be attributed to lattice strain or particle size, respectively: E = 1/4 cos ? n= B cos ? where A is the wavelength of X-radiation and 0 is the Bragg angle. As no significant peak shifts or asymmetry could be detected in the profiles from the foils, the possibility of any significant contribution due to twins or stacking faults was ruled out. The absence of faults is by no means surprising since pure silver is known to develop stacking faults only on severe deformation and the stacking fault densities recorded so far for even silver filings have been extremely low.' The very low values for percentage mean deviation from the mean value for the particle size in Table I strongly suggest that all observed broadening in splat-cooled silver can be attributed only to small particle size. This conclusion receives further support from the lowest mean deviation recorded for data computed from the Scherrer equation based on Cauchy profiles that are considered characteristic of particle size broadening. Further analysis for separation of particle size and lattice strain effects was considered unnecessary in view of the very large mean deviations obtained for strain values and also the earlier results suggesting absence of even detectable strain in metals and alloys quenched from the melt. It is to be stressed in this connection that the particles are actually grains and not cells formed by walls of high dislocation density usually encountered in deformed samples. My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rapidly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Grifith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: -Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modem fracture theory; -Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; -Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Grifith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo-scientific reasoning I could not accept; -the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. Incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as "the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1953) in Ger- many. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type, apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, [(Fig. 1)] (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959).

Human progress has a visible material phase, easily discernible, that is expressed in the standard of living. This material phase, however, is only the outward expression of a spiritual or mental phase that acts as a driving force in making humanity improve both its outlook and its mode of living. The instrument of progress is the human brain. Under the urge of spiritual drive, the brain acts as a focal point to utilize the forces of nature and put them to work for the benefit of mankind. Besides intelligence, which is an innate quality, the tools of the human brain are knowledge, experience, training, initiative, and skill. Given sufficient intelligence, the human brain can make an amazing amount of progress, provided it is supplied with an adequate spiritual and moral urge and a good technical background. It is the role of education to sup- ply such a background. The material phase of human progress proceeds on a series of parallel fronts, all of them interdependent to some extent (Fig. 7). The rise of the standard of living, dependent as it is upon the manufacture and mass distribution of goods, is based essentially upon the development and utilization of the material resources of a country or land area. This development involves the extraction of mineral and organic products from Mother Earth, their transportation to manufacturing centers, their transformation into finished goods and their dis-

Heats of solution of silver and copper in dilute Ag-Cu-Sn alloys at 720°K have been determined using a liquid metal-solution calorieter. Values of the se2f-interaction coefficient n AgAghave been calculated at constant copper concentrations and n Cu Cuhas been determined at constant silver contents. The reliability of the experimental data is shown by the very good agreement between nCujAg and ij &$; these interaction coefficients have experimental values of -9100 and - 9590 cal per g-atom, respectively. Certain solution models are shown to be inadequate for prediction of solute interaction coefficients in dilute Ag-Cu-Sn alloys. In a previous publication' the results of a thermody-namic study of dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys were presented. The present work represents the continuation of a program to investigate dilute alloys of the noble metals with tin and in particular is concerned with solute interactions in the Ag-Cu-Sn system. By determination of the magnitude and sign of the various interaction coefficients in dilute alloys it is possible to gain some understanding of the different types of solute-solute and so lute-solvent bonding changes that occur as the solute concentrations are varied. Hence systematic studies of alloys with similar physical characteristics as regards size, structure, electronegativity, and so forth, of their components can contribute a great deal to present theoretical knowledge of solutions. The recent definition of an enthalpy interaction coefficient, 11, by Lupis and Elliott2 is of particular value in calorimetric studies such as the present one: where j and i are solutes and s is the solvent; Si is the relative partial molar enthalpy of component i and x represents the mole fraction of solute or solvent. Values of ?Hi can be obtained directly by solution calorimetry and data for n are thus easily determined, often with a high degree of accuracy. ?Hi is related to the relative partial molar enthalpy at infinite dilution, ?Hi and to the enthalpy interaction coefficients by the expression: ?Hi?Hi + X;nz+ ... [2] The aim of the present work was to determine the self-interaction coefficients n AgAgand 178: in alloys of different compositions and also to establish values for n Agcg| and ncuAg. Since it is a thermodynamic requirement (resulting from the Maxwell-type relationships which can be applied to partial molar properties) that nAgcu and ncuAg should be equal, a further aim of this study was to demonstrate the agreement between experiment and theory. EXPERIMENTAL A description of the liquid metal-solution calorimeter used in this research has already been published,3 and no further details of its construction and operation will therefore be given here. Copper supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. was indicated by them as being 99.999 pct pure, and the silver obtained from A. D. Mackay, Inc., was also quoted as being 99.999 pct pure. A solvent bath consisting of between 70 and 80 g of 99.99 pct pure Sn was used for each series of experimental drops. Its weight was accurately determined and the appropriate amounts of copper or silver were added to give alloys of the desired composition. Approximately 0.00125 g-atom additions were used for determinations of the heat of solution of silver in the bath, while, for copper, specimens consisting of approximately 0.0015 g-atom were used. The heat capacity of the bath was determined at regular intervals during a series of drops using tin or tungsten calibration samples. The heats of solution of silver and copper in pure tin were first determined as a function of their concentration in order to establish the self-interaction coefficients 7AgAg and ncucu Alloys containing a constant 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 mole fraction of copper were then used to study 17:: in alloys of different copper content, while alloys of the same mole fractions of silver were used to determine equivalent data for 178: at constant silver concentrations. The composition of the bath was held at the desired copper or silver concentration by making calculated additions of the appropriate solute throughout the experiment. From the limiting values of ?HAg in the constant copper content alloys it was possible to study ?HAg as a function of xCu and hence to determine 42:. A similar analysis of the re, values permitted calculation of nAgcu. Heat content and heat capacity data from Hultgren et al* were used to calculate heat of solution values from the measured heat effects at the experimental temperature of 720°K. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Determinations of ?HAg. A preliminary investigation of the heat of solution of silver in pure tin at 720°K was first made in order to establish the value of nAgAg before additions of copper were made and also to compare the value of ?HOAg(l) with that obtained in the previous study of Ag-Au-Sn alloys.' Mining headlines in 1952 dealt mainly with expansion as the industry aimed for an ever increasing production to meet the nation's needs. Huge sums were expended for equipment, research, and development. Headlines told part of the story. Negotiations between San Manuel Copper Co. and the RFC finally resolved in a $94 million loan for the development of low grade Arizona ores. Magma Copper, parent firm was to supply an additional 8 million. Kennecott Copper Co., deepening its Deep Ruth Shaft of its Ruth, Neyy mine, announced that the shaft would be in full production in 1953.

The response of the Guard Electrode sonde (LL3) and the Laterolog (LL7) can be mathematically computed only for cases that do not represent realistic conditions. A resistance network analogue that simulates a number of typical—although idealized—formations was used instead to obtain, for both devices, a large number of resistivity logs and current distribution maps. From these data, charts were prepared for estimating true resistivities under a number of conditions. Some of these charts and current distribution maps are presented. INTRODUCTION Two main benefits are expected from a resistivity log: (1) obtaining geological information for mapping and other purposes, and (2) obtaining petrophysical data, based on true rock resistivity. The geological information can be derived from any resistivity curve having sufficient vertical detail, but true rock resistivities frequently are difficult to determine with desired accuracy because we do not have sufficient interpretation data. This is particularly true for the records given by the Laterolog tools. The object of this paper is to throw some light on the factors affecting the responses of these tools so that better resistivity data can be obtained from Laterologs. LATEROLOGS Laterolog measuring systems are of two types: the LL3 sonde, frequently called "Guard", and the LL7 sonde. Both measure the resistance between a single exploring electrode placed in the borehole and a faraway return electrode whose influence will be assumed here to be negligible. Although the principles of these tools have already been outlined,1-3 it is desirable to review them briefly in this article. LL3 Fig. 1, left side, represents a long cylindrical, vertical current electrode placed in a medium of uniform resistivity. The current leaving the center section of the electrode flows essentially along horizontal lines, delineating a surface having the shape of a biconcave lens. It is the elec- trical resistance offered to this particular group of current lines that is measured by the Guard tool. This is done in practice by having a long cylindrical electrode consisting of three sections physically and electrically separated by thin insulating washers, as shown in the center of the figure, and keeping the three sections at the same potential. It is obvious, for all practical purposes, that the current and potential distributions about this electrode are the same, as if we had a continuous electrode of same dimensions. Because the three sections are electrically separated, the resistance seen by the center section E can be independently measured. This section will be called the exploring electrbde, or E electrode. Its height generally is from a few inches to 1 ft. The outer sections are the guards G, which are several feet long. The combined length of the three sections is from 10 to 12 ft for the tools currently used in the petroleum industry. Let V denote the potential difference between E and the faraway return electrode, and I be the current flowing between these two electrodes. The resistance (Re) seen by the exploring electrode is VII, and the corresponding apparent resistivity is Ra = k(Re),............(1) where k is the tool calibration factor. The previous description establishes that the Guard tool uses that central portion of the sonde from which, in a uniform medium, the current follows essentially horizontal paths. The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

A generalized rate equation for the reduction of iron oxide was derived from which two particular equations were obtained: one for rate controlled by the transportation of gas, the other for rate controlled by the phase-boundary reaction. Pellets of pure ferric oxide having diameters of 8.5 to 17.5 mm and a density of 4.8 g per cm3 were prepared and reduced by hydrogen at 750° to 900°C. From the analysis of data obtairzed, it was observed that neither the phase-houndarv reaction nor the transportation of gas controlled entirely the rate of redziction. Rather, the mechanism of reduction can he divided into three stages. In the beginning, the process seems to depend predominantly on the surJrce reaction, hut after a layer of iron is formed the diffusion of gas becomes the controlling factor. Towards the end, however, the rate falls sharply due to a decrease in porosity. The times predicted by the generalized equation for a certain degree of reduction showed an excellent agreement with those obtained experinmentally for pellets of varying sizes. WIDE interest in iron oxide reduction has resulted in many valuable studies pertaining to thermody-namical properties, equilibrium diagrams, and chemical kinetics. Although the thermodynamical properties and equilibrium diagrams are now known with a fair degree of accuracy, the mechanism and rate-controlling step in the reduction of iron oxides presents a problem to research workers which is still unsolved. This is because the field of chemical kinetics is so highly complex. Besides the chemical reaction between oxide and reducing gas, several other processes are occurring simultaneously such as solid-state diffusion of iron through intermediate oxides (FeO and Fe3O4), the diffusion of reducing gas inwards and of product gas outwards, and the sintering of iron if reduction is carried out above the sintering temperature of iron. Furthermore, there is a large number of variables, including the nature and flow rate of the reducing gas, the chemical composition and physical properties of the ore, the temperature of reaction, particle size, and so forth, all of which can affect both the mechanism and the kinetics of reduction. Despite the controversy and diversity of opinion about the mechanism of iron oxide reduction, three main schools of thought have emerged. According to the first, the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas through the boundary layer of stagnant gas; the second claims that the rate is proportional to the area of the metal-oxide interface, while the third believes the transportation of reducing gas from the main stream to the metal-oxide interface and of product gas from the metal-oxide interface to the main stream to be the rate-controlling step. 1) The boundary-layer theory is true mainly for packed beds where the flow of gas through the bed is important. For a single particle, the boundary layer may be prevented from being the rate-controlling step if a gas flow rate of reducing gas above the critical flow rate is used. 2) Several workers have reported a linear advance of the Fe/FeO interface which provides excellent support for the belief that reduction is controlled by the surface area. McKewanl has given formal shape to this concept with mathematical derivation and has shown it to be valid for reduction of several iron ores, hematite, and magnetite, both by H2 and H2, H2O, N2 mixtures. Some other investigators, however, do not find this theory to be entirely valid. Deviations have been observed2 and further confirmedS3 Hansen4 also agrees that deviations do occur, at least in the latter stages of reduction, while from the data of several investigators summarized by Themelis and Gauvin,5 it is clear that the theory is not always applicable and further that, when it is applicable, it does not hold in the final stages of reduction. 3) Among those who claim the transportation of gas to be the rate-controlling step are Udy and Lorig,6 Bogdandy and Janke,7 and Kawasaki el a1.8 The validity of the theory has also been acknowledged indirectly by other research workers who show that the sintering and recrystallization of iron cause a decrease in reduction rate, for it is only if the transportation of gas is important that this sintering has any bearing. However, the theory has been rejected by some because they have failed to obtain

A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

CONSIDERABLE work has been and is being done on the changes of physical properties that take place in alloys at elevated temperatures, and much information on this subject is published. Much less is known, as pointed out by Rickett and Wood,1 about reactions between the alloys and atmospheric gases and still less is known about changes within the alloy itself under the influence of heat and given atmosphere. Moreover, most of the work published has been done on the alloys of "heat-resist-ing" type, in which chromium is an essential ingredient, the behavior of all other alloys being quite unknown, except perhaps of decarburization produced at the surface by oxidizing atmospheres. It has been shown' that iron, with total amount of foreign ingredients not exceeding 0.01 per cent, if heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at above 900° C., may be saturated with oxygen to 0.1 per cent. It was suspected that something of a similar nature may take place in iron-silicon alloys (transformer material), the mechanism of such processes being either a direct diffusion of oxygen into the alloy, or oxygen combining with silicon to form Si02 or more complicated (silicate) inclusions. Another possi-bility to be considered was that during annealing in oxidizing atmos-pheres, when scale is being formed, silicon may oxidize preferentially at the surface, thus impoverishing the alloy in silicon. In collaboration with Dr. T. D. Yensen,3 the writer set out to investigate this problem about two years ago in order to settle these questions.

This paper describes the use of a computer in analyzing the expected return on a mining venture. The computer program is designed to incorporate all aspects of a mining project, including the mine, mill, smelter, and refinery. Data input may consist of the operating variables in each phase such as the mining rate, grades, reserves at the mine, and the technical operating characteristics of the mine, mill, smelter, and refinery. Detailed tax computations are shown for a domestic operating company, for a foreign company and for a foreign subsidiary. In addition, the use of the various options that are available such as expense write-offs or deferments to create tax credits during preproduction years are considered, and its effect on the DCF. The program is also constructed to accommodate changes in metal prices, and escalation of capital requirements and operating costs. Output consists of profit and loss statements for entire projects using different methods of depreciation, cash flows, discounted cash flows, net present value and returns on investment. Returns on investment are computed for equity investment, total investment, and total investment less tax credits. Allowances are made for bank and guaranteed loans. Additional financial statements can be made for the following: a) A mine-mill segment with a concentrate selling schedule b) A mine-mill-smelter complex with a smelter product selling schedule c) Profitability of the smelter separately d) Profitability of the refinery separately

Fine powders of lead zirconate titanate have been prepared by three different methods such as ball milling, conventional coprecipitation and spray drying. Different powders have also been prepared by changing the process variables in each method. These powders were analysed for particle size chemical composition and reactivity. DTA, TGA and x-ray analysis have been carried out to study the lead zirconate titanate formation with reference to calcination temperatures. The calcined powders were then consolidated by compaction and sintering. An attempt has bean made to explain the consolidation behaviour of these powders on the basis of powder characteristics.

Illinois produced 146,788,000 bbl. of oil in 1940, or nearly 11.0 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked fourth among the oil-producing states. Its production was only slightly less than that of Oklahoma, which produced 11.5 per cent of the national total. Illinois' production in 1940 represents an increase of 55 per cent over the previous year, when it amounted to 94,912,000 barrels. The development of the Devonian limestone in the Salem and Centralia fields is largely responsible for the increase in production during 1940 Production from the Devonian limestone in these two fields was estimated to be 36,698,000 bbl., or 25 per cent of the state's total production (Table I). The increase in production during June, when the state's daily average production attained a peak of 518,200 bbl. for the week ending June 29, was due to the Devonian production at Centralia (Fig. I). The initial production of the best Devonian wells in the Centralia field was as high as 12,000 bbl. in 24 hr. Daily average production in IIIinois for 1940 was 400,000 bbl. of oil, but actually daily production fluctuated widely during the year. At the beginning of 1940 daily production was approximately 330,000 bbl. During the first hali of the year it in-creased irregularly to the peak in June mentioned above and as the prolific Devonian producing areas were drilled up, the state's daily production declined rapidly during July and continued to decline, although more slowly, until the end of the year, when the daily production was approximately 325,000 bbl. The daily average production per well in the new fields at the end of the year was approximately 40 bbl. (Fig. I). Oil from the Devonian was also produced in the Bartelso field, Clinton County, the Sandoval field, Marion County, and the Irvington field, Washington County, bringing the estimated total production from the Devonian limestone to about 26 per cent of the state's total production, The remainder was obtained largely from the Mississippian system. About 2 per cent of the total was from Pennsylvanian and Ordovician strata. The decline in the Devonian limestone production has been so rapid that the 1941 output from this system will probably be only a small fraction of that of 1940 unless large new reserves are discovered. The "Trenton" (Ordovician) limestone has been tested in two wells in the Centralia field and both were small oil producers at a depth of about 4000 it. The "Trenton" also was found productive in the Salem field at a depth of 4500 ft. (Table 5). The initial production of the discovery well, which was completed shortly after the end of the year, was 130 bbl. on pump. Other wells drilled early in 1941 had initial productions averaging 172 barrels. The outlook for 1941 is for a continuation of drilling activity in Illinois, but at a declining rate (Fig. I, upper curve). The most active area at the end of 1940 was in the deep basin area in Wabash, Edwards, White, and Hamilton Counties.

Many months ago, the ME staff began thinking about what to put on the February cover of the Centennial Commemorative issue. We have considered photographs of mines, equipment, symbolic artwork and various collages. Our theme is "the next 100 years in mining" and the cover ideally should convey a related message or idea. All of us are convinced that there are many exciting technical changes that will be coming. But even so, we decided that, in our opinion, the engineer is the most vital factor. For this reason we chose to put a man on the cover of this issue. At first it was going to be the face of a man with whom each member could conceivably identify himself. It was one of the Bobs on our staff (we have four) who came up with the thought that since it's the future we are talking about, we should have a young man's or a student's face. Of course we firmed up our idea at the ninth hour, and it was too late to canvass the mining schools. However, by a stroke of luck, we were rapping with a group of University of Arizona students on the terrace of the Pioneer Hotel on December 7, 1970, and met Dave Bolles.

MODERN mine maps are largely a product of evolution. The first mine maps used in the west were old composite maps with all the levels plotted on the same sheet. The composite was widely used and occasionally is seen even now. This type of underground map had serious limitations. One was the development of an indecipherable complex of workings around steep shafts. The other limitation was that of size; often when a working passed the limit of the sheet no map was made of it. These old maps have been superseded by the single level maps, laid out in squares or rectangles which can be expanded indefinitely in all directions. This produces a system capable of unlimited expansion in three dimensions, with all the detail of every working clearly marked and legible. A good set of mine maps should be laid out in blocks, all blocks of equal size. Each block should be limited by plane coordinates without overlap on bounding map quadrangles. At all times the direction of North should be indicated as an aid in remembering bearings of underground workings. It is desirable that all maps of whatever scale be plotted on sheets of uniform size. In fact, it is possible to make nearly all underground maps, surface maps and sections on sheets of the same size.
