An experimental investigation and mathematical analysis of the thermal-dilation behavior of the titanium alloy Ti-7Al-3Cb have shown that the linear dimensional changes associated with the polymorphic transformation need not be isotropic. The absolute magnitude of the linear dimensional change, which may be either positiue or negative, associated with the cr-p transformation is dependent upon the relutzve volumes of different orientations of the transformation product. It is hypothesized that the dilation irregulati-ties that have been observed during the polymorphic transformation of pure, coarse-grained titanium and other titanium-base alloys can be explained in the same manner. When titanium is heated above about 165O°F, the hcp a structure transforms to bcc 0. Thermal-dilatioh measurements have shown that the transformation is accompanied by a decrease in length of 0.16 pct.' Such dilation behavior would be expected because the volume of the hcp unit cell is about 0.3 to 0.4 pct greater than that of the bcc unit cell. A recent investigation2 of the thermal-dilation behavior of an experimental a-p* titanium alloy, Ti- 7A1-3Cb, containing 0.06 wt pct 0 showed that its dilation behavior during the polymorphic transformation differed substantially from that reported for unalloyed titanium. The first time the alloy was cycled through the transformation, the dilation curve closely duplicated that of unalloyed titanium. However, upon repeated cycling through the transformation temperature range, both the magnitude and the sign of the dimensional change associated with the transformation were observed to vary with each cycle. This investigation was undertaken to obtain additional data on the dimensional changes associated with the polymorphic transformation in the Ti-7A1-3Cb alloy and to determine the cause of the dimensional irregularities. After testing, the specimens were examined metallo-graphically. In addition, Laue back-reflection patterns were obtained from selected sections taken perpendicular to the specimen axes to determine the a orientations present in these sections. White radiation from a tungsten target and a 0.1-mm-diam collimator were used to produce the diffraction patterns. RESULTS Dilation Curves. Three types of thermal-dilation curves were obtained when the a-8 titanium alloy was heated and cooled through the transformation temperature range. These three types of curves are illustrated in Fig. 1. The type I curve represents what is considered normal behavior, because the dilation change is what would be expected on the basis of the volumes of the unit cells of a and p. The Type I1 curve is the inverse of Type I. Normal behavior is characterized by an expansion on cooling through the transformation, whereas a contraction takes place in the Type 11 curve. With Type ni behavior, no clearly distinguishable length change occurs during the transformation. No other anomalies that might be indicative of other phase transformations were observed in the dilation curves at lower temperatures. Apparently, the cooling rate was low enough for equilibrium to be reached during the 0 to a transformation. Table I lists the types of dilation curves observed during the polymorphic transformation as a function of the direction of measurement and cycle number. The A1 value was determined by extrapolating the low-temperature (a + 5 pct p) and high-temperature (100 pct p) segments of the dilation curves to a common temperature and measuring the difference in the or-dinates at that temperature, see Fig. 1. The transformation occurs over a temperature range in this alloy, so the magnitude of A1 is not an absolute value but depends on the choice of temperature. A mean temperature, T,, within the transformation temperature range was selected for the measurement. T, on cooling occurred about 100°C lower than T, on heating. The first time each of the three dilation specimens was heated to above the temperature, that is, Cycle 2, normal Type I behavior was observed. In Cycle 3, two deviations from normal behavior occurred. First, during cooling of the longitudinal specimen, a substantially larger expansion, +0.21 pct, was measured as 0 transformed to a compared with +0.03 pct in Cycle 2. Second, the thickness specimen was observed to undergo a contraction instead of the anticipated expansion on cooling. Continued cycling of the three specimens from room temperature to 2500°F produced additional changes in the dilation behavior. These changes did not seem to be related to the fabrication direction of the alloy because the values of a1 for the longitudinal, transverse, and thickness specimens varied unpredictably in magnitude and sign. Furthermore, both the longitudinal and transverse specimens showed all three types of dilation curves at least once during the six cycles that they received. The permeability of Mo-0.5 pel Ti to hydrogen was investigated over a limited range of temperature and pressuire (709° to 1100°C, 1.i and 2.0 atm). The resulting permeability, p, is found to obey the The experimental data justifies the permeation mechanism as a diffusion contl-olled pnssage of Ilvdrogen atoms through the metal barrier. 1 HE permeability of metals to hydrogen has been investigated by a number of workers and their published results have been tabulated by Barrer' up to 1951. Since most of the work on the permeability has been accomplished prior to this date, the compilation is fairly complete. Mathematical discussion of the permeability process has been reported by Barrer, smithells, and more recently by zener. From these efforts several facts are observed. First, the permeability of metals to diatomic gases involves the passage through the metal of individual atoms of the permeating gas. This is evidenced by the fact that the rate of permeation is directly proportional to the square root of the gas pressure. Second, the gas permeates the lattice of the metal and not along grain boundaries. It was shown by Smithells and Ransley that the rate of permeation through single-crystal iron was the same after the iron had been recrystallized into several smaller crystals. Third, it has been observed that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal membrane. Johnson and Larose5 verified these phenomena by measurirlg the permeation of oxygen through silver foils of various thicknesses. Similar findings were noted by Lombard6 for the system H-Ni and by Lewkonja and Baukloh7 for H-Fe. Finally, it has been determined that for a gas to permeate a metal, activated adsorption of the gas on the metal must take place. Rare gases are not adsorbed by metals, and attempts to measure permeabilities of these gases have proved futile. ~~der' found negative results on the permeability of iron to argon. Also, Baukloh and Kayser found nickel impervious to helium, neon, argon, and krypton. From what was stated above concerning the dependence of the rate on the reciprocal thickness of the metal barrier, it is seen that although adsorption is a very important process, at least in determining whether permeation will or will not ensue, it is not the rate determining process for the common metals. A case in which adsorption is of sufficient inlportance to cause abnormal behavior has been noted in the case of Inconel-hydrogen and various stainless steels.'' APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The membrane is a thin disc (A), but is an integral part of an entire membrane assembly. The entire unit is one piece, being machined from a solid ingot of metal stock. When finished, the membrane assembly is about 5 in. long. Two membrane assemblies were made; the dimensions of the membranes are given in Table I. The wall thickness is large compared to the thickness of the membrane, being on the average in the ratio of 13 to 1. There exists in this design the possibility that some gas may diffuse around the corner section of the membrane where it joins the walls of the membrane assembly, If such an effect is present, it is of a small order of magnitude, as evidenced by the agreement of the values of permeability between the two membranes under the same temperature and pressure. A thermocouple well (B) is drilled to the vicinity of the membrane. The entire membrane assembly is then encased in an Inconel jacket and mounted in a resistance furnace. The interior of the jacket is connected to an auxiliary vacuum pump and is always kept evacuated so that the membrane assembly will suffer no oxidation at the temperatures at which measurements are taken. The advantages of this configuration are: 1) there are no welds about the membrane itself, so that the chance of welding material diffusing into the membrane at elevated temperatures is remote. 2) It is possible to maintain the membrane at a constant temperature. Since the resulting permeation rate is very dependent upon temperature, it is advisable to be as free as possible from all temperature gradients. 3) It is possible to obtain reproducible results using different specimens. Until quite recently, in fact within the past two gears, but little attention has been given to the outcrops on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and their copper-contents. During the past few months the writer has been engaged in examining and developing some of these prospects. In many respects he has found characteristics associated with these prospects which, in his experience, are unique. In the first place, nearly all the outcroppings which overlie chalcopyrite-ore along the west coast of the island are composed of a high-grade magnetite. The magnetic qualities of some of these outcrops arc so pronounced that the magnetite possesses polarity. Although the writer hinlsclf had no analyses of this magnetite made, yet from its appearance he can readily believe that analyses made for other parties, which show a yield' of 62 or 63 per cent. of metallic iron, with only traces of phosphorus and silica, are correct. At a very shallow depth, masses of chalcopyrite, yielding in some instances as high as 32.6 per cent. of copper, occur associated with the magnetite; and in one instance, which recently came under the writer's observation, a solid body of high-grade chalcopyrite, fully 4 feet in thickness, occurs Within 6 feet of ; the surface. Usually this solid sulphide-ore carries low values in gold. Probably ail average of' $2 per toil would be fairly representative. But in some instances development has determined the occurrence of narrow stringers of pyritous quartz, associated with the sulphide-ores, which yield by assay more than $20 per ton in gold. In order to improve roof stability, Continental Oil Co.'s research program, initiated in 1969, was directed toward defining the geological parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. In addition, the program was seeking to define why roof falls in the Humphrey No. 7 mine (and in northern West Virginia-southwestern Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. Conclusions and recommendations from this study of roof fall orientation are given.

A. A. Holland, Consulting Engineer, Toronto, Ont.-I noticed in this discussion of locations in which radium is found, no mention is made of the recent deposits discovered in Ontario. While radium is not a subject with which I am very familiar, I took an interest in this deposit on account of its novel occurrence. It is found in Haliburton County, near Wilberforce, Ontario, associated with a quartz free pegmatite, in a "break" that I understand can be traced for two miles. This "break" marks the contact between the limestone and syenite and contains numerous cavities or vugs. The gangue, on account of its deep purple, appears to :be amethyst.

THE second meeting of 'the Open-Hearth Committee, 'sub-division of the Iron and Steel Committee of this Institute, was held at the Hotel Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; on Oct. 13-15. On Oct: 12, the Open-Hearth Superintendents visited the plants of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. and. the Republic Iron and Steel Co. These men were courteously entertailled by the two companies and every facility for a thorough inspection was furnished. Luncheon was severed at the plant bf the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. The meeting was opened Tuesday morning with addresses by J. V. W. Reynders, President of the Institute, and Herbert M. Boylston, Chairman of the Ohio Section of the Institute. E. A. Whitworth, of the Gathmann Engineering Co., presided at the meeting and L. B. Lindeinuth was secretary.

Although the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1'2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2º, often as much as 15" or 20') about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional parameter which when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate orientations, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices. The plastic properties of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide under compression were investigated in the temperature range 25° to 1000°C. At the higher test temperatures, the critical resolved shear stress and the rate of work-hardening of both materials decreased. At the same time, the number of stress lines decreased and the individual stress lines became wider. The density of dislocations decreased for a given strain the higher the test temperature for lithium fluoride. The decrease in the critical resolved shear stress as a function of temperature could be fitted by the equation 7 = Toe-KT. THE influence of temperature on the stress-strain curves of a variety of metal single crystals has been studied for a wide range of temperature.1"5 In general, it has been found that both the critical resolved shear stress and the rate of work-hardening decrease rapidly with increasing temperature and fall to a value of essentially zero well before the melting point is reached. AS the test temperature is increased, the density of slip lines has been found to decrease, while the width of the individual lines increases. Recently, Gallagher,' Graf et al.,7 and Pate1 and Alexander8 have found that single crystals of germanium and silicon, which have a covalent bond, can be plastically deformed at elevated temperatures. In compressing germanium it has been found that the strain-hardening coefficient decreased very rapidly as the temperature was increased. The coefficient did not tend to zero, however, as the melting point was approached. The plastic properties of ionic crystals at elevated temperatures have not been extensively investigated. In the only work previously reported Tamman and salge9 and Theile10 have shown that the yield point of sodium chloride single crystals tested in tension and compression decreased slowly with increasing temperature, falling to zero at the melting point. As the temperature was increased, they found a substantial increase in the amount of plastic deformation that could be sustained before fracture; and at temperatures above 400°C in tension tests there was an obvious necking which produced local extensions of up to 3000 pct. The purpose of the present work is to extend the knowledge of high-temperature deformation to the ionic crystals, lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide. The following were investigated: 1) The gross shape of the stress-strain curve at several temperatures. 2) The change in the critical resolved shear stress as a function of temperature. 3) The appearance of slip bands and the density of dislocations as a function of strain and temperature. In principle, productiorl of salt from sea water is a simple operation. The sun and wind cause evaporation of sea water trapped in ponds, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production, however, requires consideration of many factors. First is a high consistent annual rate of evaporation, as well as large areas of suitable low-lying ground close to economical shipping facilities. The south end of San Francisco Bay has these requisites. Large ponds are built, by using clamshell dredges to build up levees to a height of approximately 3 ft. on ground usually lower than sea level, so that the water may be taken in through tide gates without pumping. Ponds are divided into extremely large concentrating ponds and smeller crystallizing ponds. Approximately ten times more area is required for concentrating than for crystallizing. The concentrating ponds are irregular in shape and size but the crystallizing ponds are rectangular and fairly regular in size, to aid in harvesting. The ocean water is taken into the first of a series of concentrating ponds and gradually moved forward from pond to pond as it increase:: in density, reaehing the crystallizing area as a saturated brine. This brine is pumped into the crystallizer at the beginning of the net evaporating season, usually in May, and further evaporation causes its sodium chloride content to deposit on the bottoms of the ponds. The brine must be drawn off and a fresh supply added from time to time to prevent other undesirable salts from depositing with the sodium chloride. Harvesting usually begins near the end of August and now is accomplished almost entirely by mechanical means. After harvesting, the salt is stored in large sbockpiles until required for shipping or refining. The greatest amount is used for industrial purposes and is shipped without any processing other than screening, but all salt for domestic use produced by the Leslie Salt Co. is refined by the racuum process, giving a produet consistently testing over 09.9 per cent sodium chloride.

This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF MODERN INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIES The role of minerals in modern industrial economies may be examined in several ways. There are relationships with the various sectors of the economy: the primary, secondary, and tertiary industrial groupings and activities. Mineral supply and demand activities can be measured in terms of national accounts criteria. The economic policy objectives of the modem industrial economy are based to a considerable extent on the needs of the nation for economic supplies of miner- al materials. There is an important role for minerals relative to national security in peace and in wartime and many national policies are directed toward ensuring adequate sup- plies of minerals. Environmental control in the modem industrial economy is increasingly concerned with matters related directly to the production and use of minerals and these matters, in turn, bear importantly on conservation in mineral supply and demand. Mineral polices include specific provision for research and development activities concerned with the production and the use of minerals. In all, national policy objectives will be shaped in considerable part by the circum- stances of mineral supply and demand: the relative degree of availability from domestic and foreign sources, the state of the mineral-processing industries, and the degree of development of the mineral-using industries, and per capita and total changes in requirements. Goods made from mineral raw materials are the basis of all advanced societies and although this is taken for granted, every country is continually dealing with problems of mineral supply and demand. Considering that in the first 50 years of this century the consumption of mineral materials in a highly Industrialized country such as the United States increased by six times while the population was doubling, it becomes apparent that if a country is to enjoy rapid economic growth it must have access to huge and ever-growing supplies of mineral materials at lowest possible cost. Adequate supplies of mineral materials and wise usage of mineral resources have always been among the most important determents of a nation's survival The importance of access to adequate mineral supplies is increasing every year and this has significant international, as well as national, implications because of the unique locational characteristics of mineral resources. It is generally acknowledged that no particular type of natural resource is essential to a high level of national income or to economic progress. A country's endowment of natural resources need not exercise a determining influence on the course of its national income over time, provided it is able to trade. IN March 1949 the Calaveras Cement Co. was sued by five landowners whose properties are located in the vicinity of the plant. These landowners-all of them cattle ranchers-sued for dust damages of $120,338 and for an injunction preventing the company from casting dust upon their properties in injurious quantities. The issue was split, the jury deciding the amount of damages and the court handling the injunction features. The action came to trial before a jury in April of that year and resulted in damages being awarded in the amount of $7,508. A month later the court issued its injunction requiring recovery of stack dust to an 87 pct minimum.

Illustrated guidebooks treating in a popular descriptive way of the geology and other features of the Western United States have been issued by the U. S. Geological Survey. They will be of much interest to mem¬bers in connection with the Arizona Meeting of the Institute and espe¬cially the guidebook of the Santa Fe Route, with side trips to the Grand Canyon, containing as it does relief maps, topographical and geological maps, covering the entire route of the railroad, illustrations from photo¬graphs and other interesting descriptions of this great country. The method of treatment is adapted to the lay-reader, although it includes much valuable and interesting technical information concerning the geographical and other features. The books are well indexed. These volumes sell for 50 c. each and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C. These guidebooks originally sold for $1 each, but the reprint edition has been reduced to 50 c. A list of the different guidebooks follows: Bulletin 611. THE process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. CASE I If compressed air is allowed to expand to the atmospheric pressure through an orifice in an air line that is supplied by a running compressor, no cooling results except the negligible one due to the Joule-Thompson effect, which will not be considered in this discussion. The effect of moisture will also be neglected.

This laboratory flow study covers propping agent transporl in horizontal fractures as influenced by the characteristics of the propping particles, fluid and fracture. For particles moving individually, the article velocity in some cases may be low compared to the hulk average fluid velocity; in other cases, the particle velocity may exceed the bulk average fluid velocity. At high propping agent concentration or low fluid velocity, the likelihood of particle deposition and dune formation increases. Fingering and channeling accompany dune formation. Dune formation can be limited to the outer region of tile fracture by adjustment of pump rate, fluid viscosity and particle concentration. A method is presented by which pump rate and fluid vircosity may he selected to control dune formation for given propping agent concentrations. INTRODUCTION The area and flow capacity of a fracture predominantly control the stimulation derived from hydraulic fracturing. Generation of fracture area exposes the rock matrix to a flow channel; the flow capacity of the fracture controls the flow through the channel to the wellbore under a given pressure gradient. This paper pertains to an important factor that affects the flow capacity of a fracture: the transport of the propping particles in the fracturing during the hydraulic fracturing treatment. With a better understanding of particle transport, fracturing treatments may be designed to obtain more effective distribution of the propping agent. RELATED STUDIES In recent years, the approach to obtaining high fracture flow capacity has been partial monolayer propping. Three papers1-3 have dealt with various facets of this concept. However, in some papers dealing specifically with particle transport, the results generally indicate that packing the propping particles within a fracture is inevitable. In early work&apos; with a sand slurry flowing in a pie-shaped flow cell, qualitative results showed that particle deposition in a fracture during transport should be expected. In other studies"" correlations based on slurry flow in vertical linear flow cells showed particle deposition was primarily a function of fluid velocity. In a recent paper the rate of sand advance (movement of dunes) in a horizontal linear flow cell was discussed. Subsequently, a method was given for designing fracturing treatments, based on the extent of sand advance during a treatment. In this work, particles whose diameter was small relative to the fracture width (i.e., dl W< 0.2) were primarily considered. The particle transport approaches that of sand transport in a stream bed. The industry trend, however, has been to use larger size propping agents. That is, particles with diameters approaching fracture widths predicted by Perkins and Kern.&apos;&apos; This trend has led to generally better fracturing treatments with particle relative sizes in the range 0.2 <d/W < 1.0. In all of the particle transport studies previously cited, the fluid characteristics were discussed. However, little or no attention was given to the parzicle characteristics. In this study the particles. as well as the fluid and fracture, are considered. VARIABLES AFFECTING PARTICLE TRANSPORT In the exploratory work to set LIP a program for this study, it was noted that particles within a batch moved at different velocities in a horizontal linear flow cell. In some cases the particles moved independently. In others there was particle interference. Also, particle deposition and fluid fingering occurred in some cases (Fig. 1). As a result of observing the easily distinguishab&apos;le types of particle movement, the particle variables as well as the fluid variables were included. In addition, the fracture width was included because the fluid velocity profile surely must affect the movement of the larger particles differently than that of smaller particles. Particle variables were density, diameter (based on a sphere of equal volumetric displacement), long and short dimensions, drag coefficient and velocity. Fluid variables were density, viscosity, yield shear strength and velocity. Fracture variables were the width and the angle between the plane of flow and a horizontal plane. Two factors which may prove to be important were omitted because of the complexity resulting from the parameters cited above. These are the fracture-surface roughness and gross irregularities that cause changes in the direction of flow. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE A linear parallel-plate flow cell (Fig. 2) was used in the study. Lucite plates 1 in. thick formed the test section and permitted a viewing section 11 ft long and 10 in. wide. Spacing between the plates was adjusted with shims to give fracture widths 1/36 to 1/2 in. The model could be tilted to an angle of 45" with the horizonltal plane. Fluid flow was maintained with a Moyno positive displacement pump. Single particles were placed in the flow stream with a particle injector. Do not write until you have something to say. Think first; then write. In order to be understood, you must know what you wish to say. Clear writing is the consequence of clear thinking. Therefore consider your subject well before you begin to write; ruminate on it; marshal the salient facts in your mind; saturate yourself with the ideas you wish to express and with cognate ideas; then express yourself deliberately. If you are bubbling over with your subject the words will come, but you might as well expect to sail without a breeze as hope to give life to words without the living thought. Here I may advert to the fact that among the uneducated it is a common expectation to acquire the knack of writing without taking the trouble to study the art of literature. I overheard a woman in a suburban train remark to her neighbor: "I&apos;d like to be able to write well without stopping to think about it". She was one of many that would like to do a thing well without the trouble of thinking; but it cannot be done in respect of anything to which thought is essential. The possession of a good voice does not justify a person in expecting to sing successfully to a large audience; before singing in public one has to master the technique of singing; one has to learn first how to breathe properly, how to enunciate, and many other things. The successful singer is an artist, not a megaphone. Most of us would regard a man or a woman without any training in the art of singing as a fool or an impostor if he or she were to give a public concert, yet we do not recognize the equal foolishness and imposture of persons that write books before they have studied the technique of writing. That is why so many books are unreadable, and why many books by clever men are difficult to read. They start to write books before
