INSTITUTE HEADQUARTERS, Hotel Statler. On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

SOME relationships between the flow characteristics of iron single crystals of 99.9 pct purity and the behavior of imperfections have been investigated. X-ray rocking-curve measurements and etch-pit counts were made as a function of plastic strain, and compared to the stress-strain curve obtained on a modified Polyani tensile machine. Crystals grown from rolled strips of vacuum-melted iron by the strain-anneal method1 had a high preference for a (110) longitudinal direction and a (211) face normal. The tensile specimens were prepared from 2 by i by 0.040 in. single crystals having a gage area of 3 by \ in. Rocking-curve measurements were carried out with a highly perfect germanium monochromating crystal in which the dazz spacing was matched to that of the dZl1 in the ir0n.l Well-collimated CuKal radiation was used throughout. These procedures practically eliminated errors due to geometrical and wavelength resolution. Inasmuch as the rocking-curve half breadth may vary markedly from point to point in the specimen being irradiated, the crystals were strained in place by mounting a hydraulic loading device on the double-crystal spectrometer. The rocking curves were taken after each increment of strain in the unloaded condition, since no observable difference was found in the rocking-curves between the loaded and unloaded states. The rocking-curve half breadths of the as-grown specimens were in the range 90 to 120 sec of arc when the beam irradiated an area of about -£ by -& in. on the specimen. DeMarco and weiss3 have shown that, for a well-colli- mated X-ray beam, irradiating about 10"! sq in. of the very same material, half breadths within 10 pct of the Darwin natural half breadth were observed. Since the rocking-curve specimens were stressed by the load-unload technique, the strain achieved at any given stress depended on the time of holding because of low-temperature creep. Fig. 1 shows the rocking-curve half breadth (also area/peak height) as a function of plastic strain for a relatively short holding time (2 to 5 min) at each stress level. For strains less than 0.1 pct the rocking-curve breadth is essentially constant; it is only for larger strains that there occurs a significant increase in this breadth. Where the holding times at each stress level were longer (by well over an order of magnitude) there occurs a significant increase in the rocking-curve breadth only after plastic strains of the order of 0.6 pct had been introduced into the specimen. This observation is related to the time dependence of creep phenomena and emphasizes the difficulty in comparing data obtained by two such different straining methods. Etch-pit results were obtained using a 2 pct nital etch on specimens strained in the range of 0 to 1 pct. Prior to etching, all specimens were annealed for 3 hr at 150°C, the carbon content being sufficient to decorate the dislocations for strains of at least 1 p~t.~ The data points were all taken from parts of the same single crystal which had been strained with short holding times at stress in increments of strain of the order of tenths of 1 pct. The (211) plane is particularly difficult to etch-pit in vacuum-melted iron and therefore it is felt that these values are as much as an order of magnitude low. Fig. 2 shows the etch-pit density as a function of plastic strain. The smooth curve passing through the data points is not meant to infer a quantitative correlation with the rocking-curve data. What is of interest, however, is the change in etch-pit density in the region of 0.2 pct plastic strain. The first three increments in strain (points 2,3, and 4) did not produce a measurable change in the etch-pit density while subsequent increments did produce a measurable change. Strictly speaking, manganese should not' be classed as 'a rare metal, since there is 800 times as much manganese in the earth's crust as there is zinc or lead. But manganese' as a metal is rare, just as titanium metal is rare though titanium is five times as abundant in the earth's crust as manganese.

He shall on the first day of January of each year submit to the Library Committee a statement of the number of copies of Transactions, magazines and other publications printed during the preceding year, giving the number distributed and remaining undistributed; also a statement covering additions to and withdrawals from the total stock of Institute publications, with the number remaining on hand at date of statement.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1919, there were present nineteen Directors and the Secretary of the Institute. The following officers were elected for the year: A. R. Ledoux, first vice-president; George D. Barron, treasurer; Bradley Stoughton, secretary; and the following committees: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Library Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committe on Membership. The personnel of these committees will be published in the Year Book. A vote of thanks was passed to each officer and member of the several committees that arranged the New York Meeting of the Institute. The meeting dates for the Board were arranged for the year. INTRODUCTION Ventilation practice at Isa Mine has been evolving since underground mining began in 1931. Much fundamental work has been conducted and reported regarding the primary ventilation system [Mathews K.E. et a1 (1967) and Brown J.R., Fisher T.H., Gibson K.L. (1979) 1. However, ventilation networks for subsystems such as open stopes, have evolved with experience. This paper outlines current ventilation practice for open stoping. Mount Isa Mine The mine is located in semi-arid North-West Queensland, Australia, and currently produces 20 000 tonnes of copper ore and 10 000 tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore daily in each five day working week. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 3.5 km with a maximum width across dip approaching 1 km, and is to a depth of 960 m (Figure 1). At present approximately 90% of the mine's copper production is from the 1100 Orebody, which contains ore reserves of 121 million tonnes of 3.2% copper. Open stoping is currently the mining method employed, and is used for primary stoping and pillar recovery adjacent to cement fill walls. The development of stoping methods in the 1100 Orebody has been documented by Kirkby R.W., Blair J.R., and Hutton R.C. (19781, Hornsby B. and Sullivan B.J. (1978), and Alexander E.G. and Fabjanczyk M.W (1981). As many as thirteen open stopes may be producing concurrently in the Orebody (Figure 2). The multiple silver-lead-zinc orebodies containing reserves of 54 million tonnes of 150 g/t silver, 6.4% lead and 6.5% zinc, are mined by open stoping, and cut and fill techniques. These methods have been documented by Goddard I.A. and Bridges M.C. (1977 1, and Goddard I. A. (1981 1. Only the ventilation of the 1100 Orebody open stopes will be discussed. However, the same ventilation philosophy is employed in open stope design in the lead orebodies.

FOR a better understanding of the melting and refining processes, the oxygen content of the steel bath should be determined. The oxygen content influences many process and product variables such as the efficiency of alloy recoveries, the ingot structure (through reaction with carbon in the steel), certain reaction rates, cleanliness (formation of indigenous oxide inclusions), and mechanical properties. Many methods of sampling liquid steel for oxygen have been devised. These methods can be divided into two main groups: 1) taking samples directly in the furnace or ladle;'-'0 2) removing the metal from the furnace or ladle in a sampling spoon and pouring it into a mold, or drawing the metal from the spoon into a sample holder.11-l4 The advantages and disadvantages of the two general sampling methods are presented in Table I. The bomb-sampling technique described by Huff, Bailey, and Richards8 has been used by the Crucible Steel Co. in certain research projects where oxygen contents were needed. It was recognized that a localized boiling condition could result when the mold is introduced into the steel bath, although the work of Gilbert and Bailey9 seems to indicate that the carbon boil occurring in the bomb-sampler cavity has a negligible effect on the oxygen content. In order to confirm the reported negligible effect of a carbon boil, additional work was done with adaptations of the conventional bomb sampler. The methods used are shown in Fig. 1 and are as follows: 1) Type A: aluminum wire (0.125-in. diam) coil in cavity; steel cap over mouth 2) Type B: aluminum cup in cavity; aluminum cap over mouth, 3) Type C: aluminum cup in cavity; steel cap over mouth, 4) Type D: fine aluminum wire (0.013-in. diam) in cavity; steel cap over mouth. The amount of aluminum wire in the Type A and D samples varied from 0.8 to 1.2 pct of the sample weight. The aluminum cups averaged 2.0 pct of the sample weight; the latter were used to ensure that the steel contacting the walls of the bomb cavity was fully killed. Samples were taken from plain carbon heats made in open-hearth furnaces. This grade of steel before silicon additions is essentially an Fe-C alloy and the effects of other alloying elements on the oxygen activity can be neglected. The results of sampling with the bomb samplers is shown in Fig. 2 where the percent oxygen is plotted against the percent carbon on log-log paper. Spoon sample results on the same grade of steel where the sample was killed in the spoon are shown in Fig. 3. The oxygen contents were determined by the vacuum fusion method. A simple model for dilute interslitial solid solutions is set up which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the solid solution and the gaseous solute to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial thermody -namic functions of Ag-O and Fe-N dilute interstitial solid solutions from the measured equilibrium between these solutions and the gas phase. It is shown that the partial excess entropy of the solute atom in solution is a vibrational entropy which is due Principally to the oscillation of the interstitial atom and does not arise from electronic or elastic interaction between the solute atoms and solvent matrix. In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid interstitial solutions and a gaseous phase are used to deduce the important thermody-namic functions of the solid solution with the aid of a theoretical solubility equation formulated from a knowledge of the thermodynamic functions of the gas and a simple model for the solid solution. The quantity of principal interest which is deduced from the equilibrium data is the change in vibrational entropy occurring when a solute atom (u) is placed in an interstial site in the solvent (u) lattice. This paper forms part of a more general study in which the properties of condensed phases are deduced from measurements of the equilibrium between the condensed phase and a gas. Previous investigations have dealt with the equilibrium between krypton and liquid metals,' a pure metal and its vapor,' and dilute substitutional alloys and the vapor,3 and the subject has been popularly reviewed by McLellan.4 In the latter investigation3 the vapor pressures of very dilute Cu-Ag and Cu-Au alloys were measured with a Knudsen cell technique over a large range of temperatures and the analysis of the vapor-pressure data showed that the relative partial excess entropies were large and positive [ds= -Sudk = 30 for Au-Ag alloys and 150 for Cu-Au alloys; these values should be compared to unity, the value assumed for these exponentials in the quasi-chemical theory of solutions]. For many interstitial solutions experimental data is available for the equilibrium between the solution and a gaseous phase, and this can be used to deduce the vibrational entropies of the solute atoms in solution. The general method employed is to calculate the chemical potential of the solute atoms in the gas and equate this to pi, the chemical potential of solute atoms in the solid, which is deduced from a simple model set up for the dilute interstitial solution (in which the solute atoms act as bound oscillators in interstitial sites). This enables a theoretical solubility equation to be set up. In the case of Ag-O and Fe-N solid solutions the solubility c, is found to vary with temperature according to a relation of the type, where PU2 is the pressure of the O2 or Np molecules. Essentially, the theoretical solubility equation enables the parameter A(T), which gives the vibration entropy, and the parameter AH, which gives the energy of solution of a solute atom, to be estimated from the measured variation of solubility with temperature. The solutions treated are dilute enough to enable solute-solute interactions to be neglected so that the partial energy and excess entropy of solution E, and GS are not functions of composition and the configurational entropy is that of a random solution. Large positive values have been found for sxSu this quantity has not been given sufficient consideration in recent work on interstitial solutions and it is felt that the partial thermodynamic quantities of very dilute solutions should be understood before the thermodynamics of concentrated solutions can be fully appreciated. EXPERIMENTAL DATA 1) The Silver-Oxygen System. The measurements of Steacie and Johnson,= using silver foils, indicate that there is a pronounced minimum in the solubility vs temperature curve for O-Ag solutions. Eichenauer and Miiller6 have recently redetermined the solubility of oxygen in silver using a method developed in the investigation of metal-hydrogen systems.7 The solubility determinations were carried out on compact specimens of differing shapes and sizes and the results indicate a much lower solubility than was obtained by Steacie and Johnson with no minimum at 400°C. The simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the directional solidification of an ingot is treated mathematically on the basis of simplifying assumptions. Expressions are derived for the difference in concentration of two solutes, and for the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier formed in a semiconductor by the segregation of a donor and an acceptor. THE problem of normal segregation of a single solute during the freezing of an alloy has been treated mathematically by a number of investigators. Gulliver' showed that coring increases the quantity of eutectic above that to be expected at equilibrium, for a system having limited solid solubility and, on the basis of simplifying assumptions, calculated the fraction of eutectic to be expected. Scheuer2 expressed composition of solid solution in terms of a distribution coefficient and the fraction solidified and compared experiment with calculation for the systems A1-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn. Hayes and Chipman,3 in a detailed study of segregation in a low carbon, rimming steel ingot, calculated distribution coefficients for a number of solutes in iron, compared calculated and experimental segregation curves, and discussed the effects of process variables such as rate of solidification and stirring. In the present paper a mathematical analysis is made of the simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the orderly freezing of a solid solution system, with particular emphasis on the difference in solute concentrations. Although the analysis is quite general and can be applied to the segregation of minor elements in alloys, it is directed in particular at the solidification of a semiconductor containing a donor and an acceptor. Normal segregation has unique aspects in a semiconductor, because of the ways in which donors and acceptors affect the electrical properties. The difference between two solute concentrations becomes of importance, as does also the gradient of the difference where the difference goes through zero, this being the concentration gradient of excess carriers at a pn barrier. A primary object of this paper is to extend the mathematical treatment of segregation to include these newer aspects which are of particular significance for semiconductors. One property of interest is the electrical conduc- tivity, which arises from the presence of donors 'or acceptors in solid solution. The conductivity may be either n-type or p-type depending on whether donors or acceptors, respectively, are in atomic excess. For both germanium and silicon, elements of Group V of the Periodic System, such as P, As, and Sb, are donors and elements of Group 111, as B, Al, In, and Ga, are acceptors.4-6 If a donor or acceptor is present alone in solid solution, the conductivity is proportional to its concentration." If both a donor and an acceptor are present, then the conductivity is proportional to the difference in their atomic concentrations. If the donor and acceptor segregate at different rates then a pn barrier in certain circumstances may form at some point in the ingot. Accordingly, equations are derived and illustrated which express the effect of segregation on: 1—the concentration of a single solute with a discussion of the assumptions; 2—the difference between two solute concentrations and means for minimizing its variation in an ingot; and 3—the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier. The analysis is applicable to processes in which the entire charge is melted and then progressively frozen from one end. The method in which an ingot is solidified in a crucible7 and that in which a solidifying rod is pulled from the melt8 both fall into this category. Segregation of One Solute If a cylinder of molten alloy is caused to freeze slowly from one end, a normal segregation of solutes will usually occur, producing a lengthwise concentration gradient in the ingot. Depending on whether a solute raises or lowers the melting point of the solvent, it will become concentrated in the first or last regions, respectively, to freeze. If it is assumed that freezing is such that there is no diffusion of solute in the solid, complete diffusion in the liquid, and that k, the distribution coefficient, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the just-freezing solid to that in the liquid, is constant, then the

OIL, the abundance of it in the hands of the Allies and the lack of it in the hands of the Axis, played a major role in winning World War II. It bids fair to implement the winning of the peace. In fact the signing of the revised agreement on petroleum between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the United States of America on Sept. 24, 1945, may be considered as the first step in establishing a new pattern in foreign relations by our Government. The significance of this agreement on petroleum is that it was arrived at on the part of the United States of America through the advice and consent of the most interested parties, the leaders of the petroleum industry and the Government, distinctly a first step toward unifying the power of business and the strength of the Government, which places us on a par with the British Crown which has always had the advice and counsel of its business leaders in formulating its foreign trade policies. And what is the thing so patently discernible in this new first step toward winning the peace? It is that the petroleum agreement, the first draft of which, signed in Washington on Aug. 8, 1944, almost caused an epidemic of apoplexy among the leaders of the oil industry, represents the desire of the people most concerned with the problems of petroleum both at home and abroad. This new agreement, which will come up before the Senate for ratification this month-hearings will commence in January - derives its "power from the consent of the governed," something about which our forefathers were vitally concerned once upon a time.

VALUATION of a mine is an approximation of its true cash value which requires the application of fundamental principles of economics. Mines are valued from necessity, for the following reasons: (a) Transfers of titles. (b) Dissolutions of partnerships or corporations. (c) Mergers of mining companies. (d) Appraisals for the purpose of State and Federal taxation. (e) Establishment of the fact of worth as a basis of loans. (f) Determination of values as frequently required in litigation. (g) Listing of stock for sale by a reputable stock exchange. For the majority of purposes a valuation is required as at the present time, but for some purposes valuations as of bygone times may more nearly reflect the intrinsic worth of a mine because its subsequent history can never be, entirely ignored, but valuations made as at the present time are better indicators of cash values. Many mines with great intrinsic worth have been sold for small cash prices. The object of legitimate mine valuations is to deter-mine salable value, or that price in cash at which a transfer of the property from a willing seller to a willing buyer might be consummated, assuming that both vendor and vendee have knowledge of all pertinent data and that the owner, is not forced to sell at a sacri-fice-the definitions of fair market value precluding a forced sale.

INTRODUCTION Ronald G. Stovash General Superintendent Consolidation Coal Company Shoemaker Mine Moundsville, West Virginia Consolidation Coal Company's Shoemaker Mine is located in West Virginia's Northern panhandle near Wheeling, adjacent to the Ohio River. Steam coal is mined from the Pittsburgh #8 seam which averages 65 in. in thickness. The 10 in. of draw rock directly above the coal is taken on advancement, but remains when longwalled. The top consists of up to 12 in. of lower quality coal, and immediately over that, up to 10 ft of multi layered shales, coal, and bone. The cover ranges from 300 to 800 ft of shales and limestone. Two longwalls operate in the mine. The first longwall started in April 1975 and is retreating its eighth panel. This wall was the first to use shield supports in the United States. The second longwall started in September 1979 and is currently retreating its first 7,000 ft panel.

THE free-swelling index, a numerical value for the free-swelling properties of coal, is being used to an increasing extent in specifying coal for burning in various types of equipment. The empirical standard ASTM method for determining this index uses, as a source of heat, a gas burner which requires frequent calibration because gas pressures are not constant, relatively small changes in gas pressure resulting in rather wide variations in the temperature attained in a crucible and thus in the resultant size of the coke button. Furthermore, the quartz crucibles specified for the test are not standard equipment, and relatively small variations in dimension and wall thickness from those specified often result in rather wide variations in the resultant size of the button. A method of analysis to be satisfactory not only for a scientific laboratory but also for use in industrial control laboratories under varying conditions should employ equipment which is rugged, easily calibrated, and readily replaceable by standard materials. Gas is not universally available as is electricity, and it is generally easier to calibrate and control a simple electric furnace or heater than a gas burner, the voltage not usually fluctuating to the degree that gas pressure does. Quartz crucibles are fragile, and the size specified in the test is not normally used for any other purpose in the laboratory. Although more expensive, the 15-cc platinum crucible, available in all laboratories where volatile matter in coal is determined by the standard ASTM method, is sturdy and standard and easily replaced. Because of these considerations, a modification of the standard method has been developed which employs a standard laboratory 350-w cone heater and standard 15-cc platinum crucibles. The results of numerous tests conducted with such apparatus show conclusively that the free-swelling index values as judged by the buttons produced with this equipment are exactly the same as those obtained by the standard gas burner method. Thus it is suggested that this electric cone heater method employing standard 15-cc platinum crucibles be considered as an alternative to the ASTM method, Designation: D720-46. The free-swelling index of coal is determined by means of the ASTM method, D720-46. This method, which is an adaptation of the crucible swelling test for coal of the British Standards Institution, consists of heating 1 g of coal in a special covered quartz crucible in a regulated gas flame for a period of not less than 2.5 min in which time the temperature of the inner surface of the bottom of the crucible reaches a temperature of 82025°C. The residual coke button is then compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles shown in Fig. 1 and designated by number from 1 to 9 in increasing order of size. As the method is empirical, it requires rigid standardization of the apparatus and repeated calibration of the gas burner. The dimensions of the low form quartz crucible recommended must be rigidly adhered to as small variations in diameter or wall thickness result in variations in the rate of heat transmission and thus in the resultant size and shape of the coke button. To /neet the need for a subsurface flowmeter capable of measuring low rates of flow, a new type flowmeter has been built and tested in the field. This instrument is self-contairzed, can be run on a wire measuritzg line, and may be run through 2-in tubing. It consists of a rotameter flow-measuring assembly used in conjuncfion with a conventional subsurface instrument clock and chart. Integral with the tool is an inflatable packer which, by effecting a seal between casing and tool, diverts all fluid through the metering assembly. Packers of different size adapt the tool to different sizes of casing or liner. The flowmeter is capable of measuring rates of flow as low as 4 BID. The flowmeter has been run experimentally in seven wells. It has yielded satisfactory resrrlts in five of the wells, and in the other two it failed to operate because of loose sand in the hole. INTRODUCTION One of the oldest problems facing the producing branch of the petroleum industry is the location of depths of entry of fluid into a wellbore and the determination of the amount of fluid entering at each depth. This problem is often encountered in oil and gas wells completed in single producing horizons as well as in multiple pays; it is a common problem in oil wells which produce excessive volumes of gas. Several subsurface instruments designed to detect and meter flow in the producing interval of wells have been described in the literature.1,2,3,4 Most of these, however, were apparently intended for use in wells producing at relatively high rates of flow, and consequently lack sensitivity to low flow rates. Because of this and of other possible disadvantages inherent in these instruments, development of the subsurface flowmeter described in this report was undertaken. DESIGN OF FLOWME'I'ER Design Requirements In considering the requirements for a flowmeter that would not be subject to the limitations of devices existing at the time work was started, attention was first given to the size of the tool. Such an instrument should be of sufficiently small diameter that it could be lowered readily in 2-in tubing in a producing well. The flowmeter should contain a recording unit so that it might be run on a wire measuring line with conventional reeling equipment. It should not be too long to be accommodated by a portable lubricator of the type used for running conventional subsurface instruments. The metering mechanism of the flowmeter should not be affected appreciably by the viscosity or density of the flowing fluid. Such an instrument should record flow rates in the range from less than 10 B/D to over 100 B/D. To achieve this, a packer should he provided to divert through the instrument all fluid flow in the wellbore. This packer should be of such nature that in the event of excessive flow the fluid would bypass the instrument instead of forcing it up the wellhore. What progress has been made in rapid excavation of tunnels and shafts? Where do we go from here? To get some answers to these questions was the reason that 500 tunnel men-contractors, geologists, professors, lawyers, mining engineers--came to the University of Minnesota May 15-17. The attendance of 500 astonished conference organizer Professor D. H. Yardley, who had anticipated half that number. They came from Japan, South Africa, Austria, Sweden, and Australia to name a few, and an officer of the Corps of Engineers thought all his people should have been there. The Civil and Mining Engineering Departments of the University combined for the program, which was staged by M. K. Cragun for the General Extension Division. The Saga of the Oso Tunnel The present state of the art of rapid excavation is "good." There is little controversy about where we go from here and what's more, this reporter finds that the technical know-how to automate excavation in any kind of ground is extant, even if it will take some years to achieve this state. Ten miles from Hartsel, near Antelope springs, in Park county, Colorado, there is a large area of unconsolidated lake-beds, which are interesting because at least a part of the lacustrine sands contains in the aggregate an immense amount of gold. During 1906, one of the arms of this dessicated lake was fairly well prospected with shafts and cuts by an Eastern company to test its value, as favorable amounts of gold had in some instances been found upon it. The claims of the company contain about 5,000 acres of the beds; bat this is only a small portion of them, a south branch from a main body, which is at least 7 miles in diameter, with other and very wide lateral gulches, paralleling the one herein described on the east and west. A certain amount of digging and sampling was done in the outside areas; but the result was evidently unsatisfactory, since the work was discontinued. It has been found that the carbide phase present at equilibrium in the system M-H2-CH4, at about 600°C, is MC for the rare-earth metals Ce and Pr. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the monocarbides have fcc structures with lattice constants of 5.036 + 0.009Å and 5.131 + 0.001Å for CeC and PrC respectively. Gaseous equilibrium measurements were used to calculate the standard free energy of formation of the monocarbides from the elements. for the formation of (+ 1300) for the formation of PrC. THE rare-earthdicarbides, and their crystal structures, have been known for some years,l but only more recently were the carbides CeC,2,3 Ce2C3 2 and CeCS3 reported. In 1958 to 1959, Spedding et al. published work on the lanthanum-carbon system4 and other rare-earth metal-carbon systems,5 proving the existence of M2C3 and MC2, and measuring the lattice constants. They also demonstrated that tri-rare earth carbides, M3C, exist for the rare-earth metals samarium through ytterbium. However, they concluded that the cerium monocarbide reported by Brewer and Krikorian2 and by Warf,3 and given a fcc structure with a lattice constant of 5.130Å bythe former workers, was, in fact, cerium metal with carbon dissolved in it. They were also unable to find any evidence for the existence of Warf's CeC3, for which no structural details had been given. Even more recently, Palenik22 reported the existence of only M2C3 and MC2, having been unable to find any evidence for the existence of any other rare-earth carbides. There are no published experimentally derived thermodynamic data for the formation of any of these carbides, although Brewer and Krikorian6 have estimated values of for CeC, Ce2C3 and CeC2. The objective of the present investigation was; to determine experimentally the free energy of formation of any of the reported carbides of cerium and praseodymium, through a study of the rare-earth metal-hydrogen equilibrium. EXPERIMENTAL A methane-hydrogen mixture was circulated, in a closed system over previously prepared cerium or praseodymium hydride, and when equilibrium had been attained, the gas mixture was analyzed by selectively oxidizing the hydrogen and condensing out the water formed. The metal hydrides were used as starting material for convenience because, otherwise, the hydrogen in the gas mixture would immediately dissolve in the metals; in addition, the metals would not react with methane alone at the experimental temperature (around 600°C). The circulating system was based on that used by Browning, DeWitt, and Emmett7 for similar studies on iron carbides. It consisted of a quartz reaction vessel, all-glass circulating pump, analysis tube containing copper oxide that could be heated to 300" C by means of a small furnace, a solid CO2-methanol trap, and a double limb absolute manometer, Fig. 1. A cathetometer, capable of reading to 0.005 cm, was used to measure the difference in height between the two columns of mercury. IT has been observed that a hexagonal-close-packed crystal will undergo the same macroscopic displacements as an isotropic material if the basal plane is perpendicular to the axis of twist.&apos; Other orientations may produce both bending and twisting, but this analysis will be confined to pure torsion of a right circular cylinder. The z axis, the axis of twist, and the specimen axis are coincident. The displacements are given by Uq = rz, Ur = Uz = 0 [1] where 4 is the angle of twist per unit length. There may be three kinds, viz.: (1) Specifications in general; (2) Standard Specifications; (3) Standard International Specifications. 1. A Specification is a document used in commerce which should clearly define the qualities of material to be supplied by the producer, the tests which shall be applied for their determination, and the methods which shall be applied for the purpose of determining that the entire product shall possess such qualities, properties and finish as are desired. The terms used in such document must be applied in accordance with their strict technical definitions as used by those most conversant with them, and the language should be of such accuracy that there can be but a single interpretation of each and every clause.
