An apparatus has been developed in which metals can bc solidified under closely controlled unidirectional heat flow conditions. The metals are cooled by a multiple-air jet system, designed so that the heat transfer coefficient is uniformly distributed over the cooled surface. They are contained in a special furnace system of low thermal mass which enables unidirectional heat flow conditions to be rigorously maintained for certain specific cooling rates. This apparatus has been used to study the solidijication of pure lead and pure tin at zero superheat, solid metal thicknesses being determined by thermal analysis, and by dipstick readings. Detailed thermal balances have been drawn up on the experiments in order to determzne the cooling conditions that most rigorously correspond to unidirectional heat flow. Solid metal thicknesses, measured experimentally for these conditions, have beetz shown to agree closely with the theoretical wedictzons of different integml-profile methods. lt is concluded that any errors inherent in the integval-profile method are no greater than the errors inherent in experimental investigations of solidification. A knowledge of the influence of heat transfer rates on the solidification of metals is essential to the understanding and control of industrial casting processes. Since very few formal methods are available for solving the heat conduction equation under solidification conditions several authors have developed approximate techniques for doing so. One of the most promising is the integral-profile technique that has been used by Goodman,1 Hills,2,3 Tien4 and Hills and ~oore' to predict solidification rates under certain specific heat transfer coniditions. In the first of this present series of papers6 Hills has further generalized the method and developed a universal integral-profile technique that can be used to predict solidification rates under a wide variety of unidirectional heat flow conditions. Since the method is approximate it is necessary to investigate the accuracy with which it predicts actual solidification rates. A review of the literature7 shows that solidification rates have seldom been measured under accurately known heat transfer conditions and it was therefore decided to develop experimental techniques that would enable this to be done. Results obtained would then be available as a check on the approximate solutions already developed, and in the development of further solutions that would be applicable under more complicated conditions. The initial work in this experimental program which is described here, is concerned with the solidification of pure metals at zero superheat under unidirectional heat flow conditions. Subsequent experiments have been concerned with the solidification of pure metals at appreciable superheats, under varying unidirectional heat flow conditions and under two dimensional heat flow conditions. In a series of experiments recently initiated, the solidification of binary alloys is also being investigated. The results of these subsequent experiments, together with relevant theory, will be described in later papers. The solidifying metal has been cooled in all the experiments, by a multiple air jet system designed so that the heat transfer coefficient to the cooled surface is constant and is uniformly distributed over the surface. This type of system has been chosen since only one parameter is needed to specify the heat transfer conditions and since these conditions are analogous to those met in certain continuous casting processes.' Air cooling was chosen in preference to water cooling, however, since it offers a wider range of heat transfer conditions, and since it can be investigated by analogous mass transfer techniques. The first part of this paper discusses the existing integral-profile solutions that correspond to the heat transfer conditions used in the experiments, and describes the development and use of the experimental apparatus. In subsequent sections the heat transfer and solidification results are presented, and the various theoretical predictions are compared with them, and with one another.

A froth flotation plant to recover byproduct molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning byproduct molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term byproduct molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals. Thickener It is considered essential that the feed to a byproduct molybdenite plant be thickened prior to being treated for molybdenite recovery for the following reasons: 1) Thickening allows the rougher and any preconditioning stages to be operated consistently at the optimum percent solids. 2) Generally, the size of equipment used for pretreatment and the rougher flotation is considerably smaller and less expensive than if the copper flotation concentrates were treated directly. 3) The removal of as much water as practical by thickening removes flotation reagents added in the copper flotation circuit, especially frother which can be quite troublesome in a byproduct molybdenite plant. Although thickening of the molybdenite plant feed has long been recognized as necessary to optimum metallurigcal results, very often this area has been designed poorly. The thickener should be sized so that it can produce a consistent thickened product containing 60 to 65% solids without the use of flocculants. Some plants are only able to thicken to 45 to 50% solids consistently while other plants let the percent solids vary from 45 to 60% over a 24-hr period. While the former is more desirable than the latter, in many cases better metallurgical results could be obtained if the percent solids could be held consistently close to 60%. Probably the simplest and most satisfactory system of handling the thickener underflow is to spigot it into a sump, using a sphincter type valve for the orifice, controlled by a density meter. Another satisfactory approach is to use an ODS type pump to meter the underflow. There are other methods of handling thickener underflow which work satisfactorily as long as the amount of copper concentrates entering the thickener is relatively uniform. However, they often fail to operate satisfactorily when there are large fluctuations in the thickener feed rate due to fluctuations in ore tonnage and/or copper grade. If the percent solids in the plant feed could be held close to 65%. There is the possibility the molybdenite plant tailing would not have to be thickened prior to the copper filter plant. This means that the molybdenite rougher float would have to be conducted at 45 to 50% solids with all the cleaner tailings returned to the rougher for dilution. Admittedly, in some situations this approach would be impossible, but if capital or plant area is limited, it should be considered.

Recent evidence has indicated that the films forming at crude oil-water interfaces are the result of naturally occurring su,rface-active components in the crude oil rather than oxidation products resulting from exposure of the oil to air. Since the presence of such films may strongly affect the displacement of oil from porous media, a knowledge of their composition and formatiorz is of fundamental importance. In this study, without the assumption of a specific mechanism, film formation is considered to involve the transfer of a weakly surface-active species in solution in the oil to the oil-water interface. The film gas law and the Gibbs adsorption equation may thus he applied to the system. The rigid films which form upon decrease of the oil-water interfacial area are considered a result of the very slow rate of re-solution of the film material into the oil. When the shrinkage of the interface is very rapid, the amount of film material leaving the interface is negligible, and the system may then be treated in the same manner as an insoluble film. The combination of these treatments leads to a new concept of the film factor in which it may he quantitatively related to the concentration of film-forming material at the interface. Suitable experiments can then yield the following information. 1. Original concentration of surface-active species in the oil. 2. The change of concentration with time. 3. Concentration of surface active species at the interface. 4. The change of this concentration with time. 5. Interfacial tension of the system at any time and its variation with time. 6. Equilibriunz concentrations for a given set of conditions. 7. Concentration requirements for solid film formation. 8. Molecular diameter of the adrorbed species. These calculations may be made solely from data taken from measurements on the original oil. While using the pendant drop method of interfacial tension measurement of crude oil-water systems, Bartell and Niederhauser' remarked on the thin, transparent, pliable, solid films or membranes which were often formed at the interface between crude oil and water. As a result of their observations of these films, Bar-tell and Niederhauser concluded: 1. The films are formed by material from the oil adsorbed at the interface rather than by a reaction at the interface. 2. The adsorption of the film-forming material is a rather slow process. 3. There are good indications that the process is reversible; i.e., the film constituents may re-dissolve into the oil. 4. The film will spontaneously spread over any new surface formed. 5. The process of adsorption at the interface is accompanied by a decrease in the interfacial tension of the system. Although they had proved that film formation was not due to a reaction at the interface, Bartell and Niederhauser were unable to demonstrate conclusively whether these film-forming constituents were present in the original reservoir oil or whether they were formed as oxidation products after exposure of the oil to air. Recent evidence seems to point to their presence in the original oil. Although the true nature of the film-forming constituents is still uncertain, these conditions would be fulfilled by the assumption of the presence of a slightly soluble surface-active component in the original oil. This component would migrate to a freshly formed interface because it would thereby lower the free energy of the system. The component at the surface constitutes an expanded monolayer which would become compressed, upon retraction of drop, due to the slow rate of re-solution of the film components into the bulk of the oil. It is possible, by involved extraction processes, to separate or at least concentrate this film-forming fraction. However, using the assumptions made above, the technique of monolayer film study may be applied to reveal much of the nature of the adsorbing material without resorting to an actual separation of the film-forming constituents.

During the past five years, the mining industry has been subjected to new operating constraints that are unprecedented in number, scope, and urgency. The industry must operate in a safer, cleaner manner, yet produce more without large price increases. Compliance with any new sweeping legislation is always difficult-and particularly so in today's adverse economic climate, which is being aggravated by the steady stream of environmental control and tax-reform programs. In effect, while government is unwittingly but surely undercutting the country's productive capabilities, it blames industry for the resulting failure to meet consumer demand. Any such real or alleged failure then brings heightened bitterness from Congress. During the recent energy shortage, for instance, threats of nationalization were ventilated in public along with proposals to abolish the mineral depletion allowance.

Assuming that rock behavior, during cutting with a single diamond, may be approximated by that of a rigid, Coulomb, plastic material, a theory of single diamond cutting action has been developed. Using this theory, the stresses on the diamond cutting surface and the components of the cutting force have been determined. Theoretical results agree reasonably well with available experimental data. The theory of cutting of single diamonds may be used as the basis for subsequent study of the perfonnance of surface set diamond drill bits and other surface set diamond cutting tools. INTRODUCTION For more than twenty years, surface set diamond bits have been used successfully in the mining and petroleum industries to drill and core rock formations that range from medium hard to the hardest known formations. Most extremely hard rock formations cannot be economically drilled or cored by any other means. In view of the growing use and importance of surface set diamond drill bits, it is reasonable to study the way in which these tools cut, and the factors that influence wear of the diamonds. Such knowledge will contribute to better bit design and will improve operating procedures. To analyze the cutting performance of these tools it is appropriate to consider the way in which an individual diamond cuts. Once this is established, the over-all performance of the bits can be determined by considering the total effect of the individual diamonds. In recent years there has been a growing interest in rock mechanics and there now exist several publications dealing with the deformation and failure of rocks. Notable experimental work has been reported by Bredthauer,1 Handin and Hager,2, 3 and Gnirk and Cheatham.4 An extensive collection of data pertaining to rock properties at low confining pressures has been given by Wuerker.5 Cheatham and Gnirk have recently presented an excellent review of the state of knowledge regarding analytical and experimental rock deformation and failure.6 Generally rocks are extremely weak in uniaxial tension, and weak or only moderately strong in uniaxial compression. Both tensile failure and compressive failure are generally brittle in nature. This means that there is little or no deformation or "flow" of the material before shear or tensile fracture occurs. Thus, until fracture occurs, rock behaves very nearly like an elastic material in uniaxial stress. Significant changes in behavior of rock occur under conditions of triaxial compressive stress. There is generally a marked increase in compressive strength and in ductility. It has been demonstrated that the failure becomes plastic (in a macroscopic sense) at sufficiently high values of confining pressure. Sharp wedge chisel indentation studies conducted by Gnirk and Cheatham indicate that many rocks behave in a plastic manner at relatively low triaxial compressive stress states.4 If "failure" under triaxial compressive conditions is considered to be either complete rupture or macroscopic plastic flow, then the general failure characteristics of a rock can be reasonably well represented by the commonly known Mohr envelope. This certainly is not a perfect failure criterion (since the effect of the intermediate principal stress is neglected) but it has been found to be adequate for most engineering purposes. Mohr envelopes usually are constructed graphically using experimental triaxial test data. For purposes of analysis it is convenient to represent the envelope in equation form. Among the several approximate forms appearing in the literature, a parabolic form is suggested by Cheatham,7 and an exponential form is suggested by Paone and Tandanand.8 The exponential form has been adopted for this study, and based on published data, appropriate parameters have been established for 19 rock types. Several samples of copper-nickel ore from the Duluth Gabbro were studied to relate their mineral-ogical characteristics with their amenability to concentration by flotation. The most common rocks in the samples were norites, gabbros, and troctolites. The texture of the rocks varied from coarse pegma-titic to very fine. The copper contents ranged from 0.2-0.7% and the nickel contents from 0.07-0.15%. The ore minerals were chalcopyrite, cubanite, pyrrhotite, and pentlandite. Most of the ore minerals occurred in interstices between laths of plagioclase, but some were included in the gangue grains. The samples responded readily to xanthate flotation. After a 65 to 100-mesh grind about 95% of the copper and 85% of the nickel were recovered in a bulk sulfide concentrate. Such recoveries remained constant even with grinds as fine as 270 mesh due to the extremely fine inclusions of sulfides in the silicate gangue. A finer grind than 270 mesh was necessary to free the copper-iron sulfides from the nickel-iron sulfides. A combination of time and British gum* was quite effective in producing concentrates analyzing 25-30% copper. The nickel concentrate averaged 1.5% nickel. Most of the nickel lost in the tailing was present as un-liberated sulfides and not as nickel in the olivine structure. The nickel content of the olivine was only about 0.05 or 0.08%. Western world nickel usage in 1967 is expected to be the second highest on record, amounting to 825 million lb. Despite a rise in mine production, however, demand is expected to exceed supply in 1968. ' Hence, exploration, development, and production expansion projects are being accelerated on a world scale. In Minnesota the copper-nickel bearing Duluth Gabbro is receiving much attention. During the past year 11 companies have been granted leases in the region, and the 1967 Minnesota legislature enacted a tax law designed to encourage the development of a copper-nickel industry. Although it is only during the past few years that mining companies have shown an active interest in the Minnesota copper-nickel deposit, copper-nickel minerals have been known to exist in northeastern Minnesota since 1899.3 At the 28th Mining Symposium, Dr. P. K. Sims, from the Geological Survey of Minnesota, gave a review of copper-nickel exploration in northeastern Minnesota,4 in which he emphasized that the potential of the Duluth Gabbro complex is large. Tests on samples from the Kawishiwi River area were reported by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1955.' In 1964, the Mines Experiment Station described tests on samples from the Gunflint Trail: and in 1966 the Minnesota Geological Survey published a geological map of the Gabbro Lake Quadrangle. The Mines Experiment Station published a study of the concentration of a Minnesota copper-nickel ore in 1967.7 The present paper is divided into three parts. The first describes the mineralogy of some rock samples from the Kawishiwi River area of northeastern Minnesota; the second summarizes the results of numerous flotation tests that were made on the samples, and the third explains the loss of nickel in the flotation tailing. MINERALOGY OF KAWlSHlWl ROCKS Recently five samples of mineralized gabbro from the Kawishiwi River area, a few miles east of Ely, were received at the Mines Experiment Station. One of the samples was a 175-lb composite, which was designated Ore 1556. The other four samples were 7-lb grab samples that had been obtained from four different exploration pits. They were designated Ore 1626, Lots 1 through 4. Basic Mineralogy: Many authors have reported that the rocks of the so-called gabbro of the Duluth Intrusion vary widely in composition.8-9 The samples on which our studies were based also contained a wide range of rocks. A gabbro, olivine-gabbro, anorthosite-gabbro, norite, and a troctolite were represented. The essential minerals in the samples were plagio-clase, pyroxene, and olivine, in variable proportions.

This paper examines the zero order production phenomenon in the context of the size discretized batch grinding model. A restrictive interrelationship between the selection and breakage parameters of the model, which is mathematically sufficient to ensure zero order behavior, is delineated. Based on this interrelationship, a scheme is developed for predicting the values of the selection and breakage parameters for all size fractions from a minimum of experimental data. To test this scheme, dolomite was ground in a laboratory batch ball mill. Successful simulation of the comminution behavior of this system was achieved using the batch grinding model with the parameter values obtained from the proposed scheme. Historically, a preponderance of comminution research has centered on attempts to relate breakage energy to the performance of comminution machines. Concomitantly, grinding data were interpreted almost exclusively in terms of inherently empirical energy-size reduction relationships1-3 or "laws of comminution"4- 6 which were based on highly oversimplified descriptions of the fracture process. In some instances, these relationships provide a crude basis for the correlation of experimental data, but, invariably, this approach is inadequate for meaningful process simulation. The control and optimum design of comminution circuits require a mathematical model capable of depicting the size reduction behavior of every size fraction for grinding conditions of technological importance. Energy-size relationships do not provide this detailed information. For example, an energy-size analysis for batch ball-milled dolomite has recently been completed in the authors' laboratories.7 This analysis provided a satisfactory correlation between the hypothetical size modulus, which characterizes only the finer portion of the size distribution, and the input energy. However, this relation did not constitute an adequate description of the complete system. In general, one of two distinct viewpoints toward simulation has been adopted in recent comminution research. The first approach focuses on the fracture of single mineral specimens, with the essential aim of representing the over-all process in terms of the breakage characteristics of individual particles and the characteristics of the stress field which the particles experience within the particular size reduction device. As illustrated by Harris's review,' the actual incorporation of single-specimen fracture information into a description of the behavior of a multiparticle comminution system has seldom been attempted. The only model to accomplish this incorporation was the one developed by Schönert.8 The Schonert model treats single-passage grinding machines in terms of a distribution of effective loads acting on a particle, a distribution of required particle breakage energies, and the breakage product distribution. However, the use of single-particle fracture behavior to derive models of the size reduction process is at present limited to machines in which the particle residence time is approximately equal to the time required to apply stress. As a result, Schönert's analysis cannot be used to advantage to simulate the complex environment which prevails within a tumbling mill. For multiple-passage systems a second approach to the description of comminution processes has been more fruitful. This approach entails the formulation of a mathematical model which is phenomenological in nature in that it lumps together the entire spectrum of stress-application events which prevail in a system under a given set of operating conditions. The appropriately defined average of these individual events is then considered to characterize the over-all breakage properties of the device. Thus, to analyze the performance of a tumbling mill, the manner in which the particles of a particular size (or size fraction) are stressed need not be distinguished. Instead, a single parameter is assumed to represent the resistance of that size to fracture, given the average grinding environment which exists in the mill. The isolation of such a parameter and a related set of quantities, which constitute the breakage product size distribution for the average event in this size fraction, allows the formulation of physically meaningful descriptive equations capable of yielding precise and detailed information for simulation.
