REPORTS from smelters show that all were so occupied with the in- creased production called for during the first half of the year that little time was devoted to metallurgical developments. Improvements which have been made such as gas-firing and other alterations ill the reconstructed Hayden smelter, will require time for reporting. The labor situation at all plants held the most prominent place and put all other problems in the background. Coming events of considerable importance concerti the construction of two new smelters. The Chino unit of Nevada Consolidated which has long had its concentrate smelted at the El Paso plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. is constructing its own smelter at the property in New Mexico. The newest Phelps Dodge development of the Clay ore body at Morenci, Ariz., will call for another new smelter.

The principal events in the oil and gas operations for Louisiana during 1933 have been the rapid development of the Converse field in Sabine Parish, the discovery of three new salt domes, one in North Louisiana and two in South Louisiana, increased development in the Iowa field on the Calcasieu-Jefferson Davis Parish line, and extensive geophysical operations over a wide territory. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil lands over a wide area, extension of production at the East Hackberry field, Cameron Parish, discovery of deep sands at Caillou Island, Terrebonne Parish, and the completion of several important wildcats. Despite proration, oil production showed a substantial increase during 1933. The total output for this area was 25,599,802 bbl. as compared with 22,507,387 bbl. during 1932. North Louisiana There were 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells completed in North Louisiana during 1933 as compared with 109 oil wells and 33 gas wells during 1932. North Louisiana oil production decreased approximately 692,625 bbl. in 1933 from its 1932 figure. The normal decline in the old fields was partly offset by increased production at the Zwolle and Converse fields in Sabine Parish. Acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Monroe fields was highly successful. The method of application has been described by H. K. Shearer, Geologist, Pelican Natural Gas Co., as fo1lows:l With tubing in the hole and standing valve removed, the casing is filled with oil to the surface. The limestone solvent is pumped in through the tubing, at the same time bleeding off enough oil from the casinghead to equal the volume contained in the tubing plus the volume of open hole to be treated. The amount of solvent used in most of the wells treated was 1000 gal., which is enough to dissolve about 11 cu. ft. of chalk or limestone. After the computed amount of oil is bled off, the casinghead is closed and the remainder of the solvent is pumped in at whatever pressure is necessary to force it into the oil-producing horizon. In all, 210 wellst were completed in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1939, which is 59 more than were drilled during the preceding year. Of this number, 137 were gas wells, which is a considerable increase from the 81 completed during 1938. Only 25 oil wells were completed, as against 28 in the previous year, and 28 dry holes, 6 more than last year. Shallow Development—Gas The increase in the number of gas wells is largely the result of a search for additional gas in Armstrong and Indiana Counties. Although a considerable number of wells were drilled in the latter county, the majority of them produced less than 100 M cu. ft. initial open flow. In Armstrong County, a new pool was opened in Cowanshannock township, producing from the third Bradford sand. Several large wells were obtained there, one of which produced an initial of nearly 12 million cu. ft., with a reservoir pressure of 1100 Ib. However, the productive area has been fairly well outlined by further drilling and shows that the pool covers only about 800 acres. The sand is 20 to 30 ft. thick, and probably has 5 to 6 ft. of pay. Thus this reserve is not an important one. Several wells were found in Menallen township, Fayette County, where the Big Injun sand has been having a play for the past three years, but the activity there is much less than a year ago. Oil On the west side of the Bradford sand gas pool, Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, a well was drilled which flowed 100 bbl. the first day from the Tiona sand. DIE castings may be defined as metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into a metallic mold or die. It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into threee groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. CASTING MACHINES The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly. apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings.

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. Lead-zinc ore bodies in the upper part of the Pine Point carbonate barrier complex are localized in paled-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure. Detritus-filled dolines host prismatic ore bodies, and macropores and stratabound permeable zones contain tabular ore bodies. Sulfides are concentrated in these transgressive paleosolution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition, perhaps related to periodic supply of reduced sulfur. District and ore body metal distribution pattern may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

Dry room equipment at Donora Zinc Works is of the design which prevailed at the time the plant was built in 1915. It consists of 11 adjoining rooms, each being 99 ft long, 11 ft wide, and 7 ft high and having a capacity for 1040 retorts. Heat is supplied by steam coils beneath the slatted wood floor and by warm air ducts at the ceiling. Drying practice is about the same as that generally followed in the industry except that, under normal zinc furnace operations, the maximum drying time is 45 days. During certain seasons of the year the drying process was seriously affected by varying weather conditions which frequently resulted in a scrap loss of 5 to 7 pct. Because of these unfavorable conditions, which caused uneven drying and strains in the retorts, increased retort failures in the zinc furnaces were recorded. Regulation of temperature and humidity under all conditions appeared to be the logical solution of this problem. Controlled drying had been developed for a number of ceramic products and investigation of several such drying processes in this area revealed favorable results. Along with control of drying conditions and the attendant decrease in scrap losses, plant operators also reported a material reduction in drying time. Another factor affecting the decision to proceed with this development was the drastic change in market conditions for retort clay. Curtailment of shipments from the chief source of supply made it necessary to proceed with blending of other available clays, but quality of these clays was questionable for adequate retort life in the 24 hr furnace cycle. Rapid furnace testing of new mixtures was desirable but impossible with the prolonged drying schedule. Therefore development of a controlled drying process for zinc re- torts offered the solution to the problem of rapid testing of retort mixtures. Description of Process and Equipment The freshly extruded retort is cylindrical in shape, 58 in. long, 9 in. id and has 1 1/8 in. side walls. One end is closed and approximately 2 in. thick. The moisture content of this "green" retort is about 17 pct which means a necessary removal of 30 lb of water per retort. Retorts are set on the slatted floor of the dry room with the closed end down. The controlled drying process depends upon the circulation of a large volume of conditioned air at low velocity. In order to throw light on the mechanism of plastic deformation of WC-Co alloys, compressive tests of WC-(7 to 43) vol pct Co alloys have been carried out at room temperature, and stress-micro strain relation has been investigated in detail. The analysis of the factors affecting the yield stresses reveals that the yield stresses can be predicted by modified Oro-wan's theory if one properly estimates the planar in-terfiarticle spacings. Conzpressive straining of some of the alloys by 0.066 to 0.17pct increases the decrements by a factor of as much as 3.4 to 14, whereas the corresponding increase in the electrical resistivities is less than 10 pct. The analysis of the decrement data in terms of -Gramto and Lücke theory shows that the marked increase is attributed to increased dislocation darnping itt the binder (cobalt) phase. By cornbilling the decrement data and the conzjwession duta, one obtains the relation between flow stress in shear (?t) and increase in dislocation density (p): At = const . v6 . This is interHeted to mean that the mechanism of strain hardening of CirC-Co alloys is essentially sarne as the one for dispersion strengthened alloys. The possible effect of bridge formations between the carbide particles has also been examined. OWING to the combination of hardness, strength, and other physical and chemical properties, WC-Co alloys have opened the way for unique fields of applications, the recent ones being, for instance, anvils for super-high-pressure generation apparatuses. In such applications, the alloys are frequently subjected to very high compressive stresses: these stresses may cause the alloys to deform plastically and eventually to fail. However, much remains obscure regarding the nature of the plasticity of the alloys. Evidently, the alloys owe their high strength to the hard carbide particles which frequently occupy as much as 80 to 90 pct in volume fraction, whereas the ductility required for practical applications is provided by the small amount of the binder phase between the carbide particles. When the volume fraction of the carbide phase is not very large, deformation behavior of the alloys may be described by some of the current dispersion strengthening theories. However, greatly increasing the carbide phase is thought to lead to some carbide skeleton structure or bridge formations owing to the increased chances for direct contacts between the carbide particles;1,2 this may appreciably affect the plasticity of the alloys. Regarding the effect of formation of the carbide skeleton structure, it is interesting to note the work by Ivensen et al.3 on compression tests of the alloys containing somewhat large carbide particles; they observe extensive generation of slip bands in the carbide particles after application of some preliminary compressive stresses. They interpret the results in terms of plastic deformatiot: of the carbide particles which are supposed to have formed a skeleton structure; the binder phase plays only a passive role, at least in the early stages of the deformation. That carbide crystals exhibit microplasticity at room temperature is apparent from the work of Takahashi and Freise4 and French and Thomas5 on indentation of WC single crystals. On the other hand, Dawihl and coworkers6-10 maintain that even when volume fraction of the carbide phase is very large (for instance, more than 90 pet), a very thin binder layer generally exists between the carbide particles. They interpret the results of the extensive mechanical tests in terms of the plasticity of such a layer. Gurland and Bardzil11 point out that decrease in ductility of the alloys with increase in the carbide phase is caused by the effect of plastic constraint exerted by the dispersed carbide particles. Drucker12 further develops this concept from a continuum-mechanics approach on an assumption that a continuous thin binder layer separates the carbide particles. A common feature of the studies reported so far on the plasticity of the alloys is that the information deduced is invariably qualitative in nature. Thus, very few systematic experiments for obtaining reliable and sufficiently detailed stress-strain curves of the alloys varying widely in the microstructural features have been carried out. In particular, it may be of special interest to investigate in detail the early stages of the plastic deformation of the alloys in order to shed light on the strengthening mechanism. However, such work appears to be extremely rare. Doi et al.13 recently reported a first brief account of the results of some quantitative analysis of the plasticity of the alloys in terms of dislocation theory. Their experiment was rather limited in the composition range covered (volume fraction occupied by the carbide phase: 79 to 83 pct), and thus they could not necessarily elucidate the controlling mechanism of plastic deformation of the alloys of a more general composition range. Consequently, in the present investigation, deformation behavior and some other physical properties of the alloys were investigated and discussed in more detail over a much wider composition range. The total production of oil in Kentucky during the year 1943 reached 7,010,776 bbl., which is more than at any time since 1930. Of this total, 5,287,659 bbl. was produced from the counties west of the Cincinnati arch, 692,359 bbl. from the 18 new pools opened during the year, and 3,260,765 from the Smith Mills pool, which was discovered in August of 1942. This is an important increase in western Kentucky in spite of the low price of crude, and demonstrates effectively the desire of the industry to cooperate in meeting the increased demands made by the war. Western Kentucky Two deep tests were drilled in the Kentucky portion of the Mississippi Embayment this year. Both were drilled to test the St. Peter. One well, drilled in Marshall County by the Adams Oil and Gas Co., did not encounter any St. Peter sandstone but drilled 650 ft. of formation below the position of the St. Peter and above the true Knox dolomite. The other well, in Ballard County, was reported to have tested the St. Peter and to have been temporarily abandoned at 3069 ft. At this depth the well probably was stopped in about the same formation as the Marshall County well. No accurate information is available on the Ballard County well. Several new producing areas were added to the list of fields in the western Kentucky coal basin, in Daviess, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Smith Mills pool was enlarged and production was found in the McClosky (Ste. Genevieve) in addition to the Cypress sandstone from which much of the earlier production had been obtained. There was some interest during the year in testing the Devonian and Silurian formations in the area south and east of the western Kentucky coal basin. In the fall of 1943, a 15 to 20-bbl. well was drilled in Allen County and two more wells are now being drilled. The production was obtained from within a few feet of the base of the Chattanooga black shale, probably in the upper Silurian. One well in Simpson County was drilled completely through the Silurian section before it was abandoned. Several wells were drilled in Logan, Todd and Christian Counties to test the Devonian where it is thinned by removal of the upper formations before deposition of the Chattanooga shale. None of these wells was successful but several other locations are now being tested. The Silurian thins in like manner on the eastern flank of the coal basin as the crest of the Cincinnati arch is approached, and it is along this thinning edge that such fields as the LeGrande, Logsdon Valley, Magnolia, Bowling Green and the Barren County pools were developed. A number of wells were drilled around these old pools in an effort to extend them, some of which were successful. The wells listed this year in Larue, Hardin, Barren, Hart and Warren Counties were drilled in the search for other such fields.

IN 1943 the petroleum industry completed a series of practical adjustments to the acute problems which dominated the scene a year earlier. The crisis in petroleum transportation from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast was met by the completion of overland pipe lines supplementing emergency haulage by tank car so pressure on consumers along the Atlantic Seaboard was appreciably relieved. Later in the year when the western Atlantic was largely cleared of submarines, the sharp reduction in the hazards of marine transportation permitted the resumption of coastwise traffic and imports from South America. Nationwide restrictions in the use of gasoline and fuel oils became necessary as military demands for all petroleum products mounted to high levels.

The effects of changes in short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions have been investigated. The heats of formation at 273°K of several alloys after two different thermal treatments were measured by liquid metal solution calorimetry. Their electrical resistivities were measured at temperatures ranging from 4° to 773°k. Tensile tests and microhard-ness measurements were carried out at room temperature. An effective short-range order parameter and an effective interaction energy are defined. The measured changes in the properties are interpreted in terms of these quantities. The short-range order parameter is evaluated separately from calorimetric and X-ray data; the results are in fair agreement. Increasing short-range order lowers the resistivity of- the silver-rich Ag-Mg alloys but does not measurably affect the temperature dependence of the resistivity. Short-range order increases the yield stress of these alloys but does not affect the ultimate tensile stress. Changes in the effective short-range order parameter independently obtained from measured changes in the heat of formation, resistivity, and yield stress are in fair agreement. THE thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of solid solutions have been investigated as functions of composition in many alloy systems, but the effects of configurational variables, such as short-range or long-range order, on these properties have received much less attention. The silver-rich terminal solid solutions in the system Ag-Mg are well-suited for the investigation of the effects of order. The composition of these solid solutions may be varied over a range extending to about 27 at. pct Mg.1 Appreciable short-range ordering is likely to take place in these solid solutions; the degree of short-range order can be varied by suitable thermal treatments. In the alloy Ag3Mg long-range ordering is possible.2 This paper is primarily concerned with the effects of short-range order on some thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical properties of the silver-rich Ag-Mg solid solutions.-The long-range ordering transition is the subject of a concurrent paper.3 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Ag-Mg alloys containing up to 26.4 at. pct Mg were prepared by melting 99.99 pct pure Ag (obtained from Baker Chemical Co.) and 99.99 pct pure Mg (obtained from Eastman Chemi- cal Co. or Johnson Mathey & Co.) in graphite crucibles under molten potassium chloride. The solidified ingots were homogenized at 823°K for 10 days in evacuated Vycor capsules. A surface layer 6 in. thick was then removed by machining. The ingots were swaged into rods (2.5 mm diam) which were drawn into wires (1.0 mm diam). The wire specimens were annealed at 773°K for 24 hr in vacuum and either quenched into iced brine or cooled to room temperature over a period of 15 days. The average grain diameter (obtained from the linear intercepts) was about 0.1 mm. 1.2) Calorimetry. The heats of formation of the alloys were measured in a tin solution calorimeter as the difference in the heat effects of alternate additions of samples of an alloy and the mechanical mixture of its component elements. The additions were made from 273°K to the bath at about 623°K. The heat effect on addition of the alloys was approximately 5.5 kcal per g-atom. The procedure and the method of calculation have been described.4 1.3) X-Ray Diffraction. Short-range order parameters of two alloys were calculated from diffuse scattering intensities,' obtained with briquettes made from powdered specimens. A GE-XRD 5 diffractometer with filtered copper radiation was used. The absolute intensities were based on calibrations with paraffin. 1.4) Resistivity Measurements. The electrical resistivities were measured by a potentiometric method in which the potential drop across the specimen was compared with that across a standard resistance. For measurements below room temperature, the specimens were immersed in liquid helium (4°K), liquid nitrogen (78°K), dry ice and trichloroethylene (195°K), or ice and water (273°K). Measurements above room temperature were made on specimens held in a furnace under helium or in vacuum. The resistivity measurements were reproducible to ±0.5 pct or less. 1.5) Mechanical Tests. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature with a Tinius-Olsen XY elec-tromatic Universal testing machine. Wire specimens (nominal gage length 1 in.) were used. The strain was measured with an extensometer, which had a sensitivity of 4 x 10-5; the strain rate was 10-3 min-1. Microhard-ness measurements were made with a square-pyramid indenter and a 100-g load.11 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All measurements were made on two parallel sets of specimens, one quenched and the other slowly cooled from 773°K. The reported values are the averages of at least three measurements. In the range of magnesium concentration substantially below that of the composition Ag3Mg, quenched alloys have less short-range order than slowly cooled alloys. When the legal holders of Government permits in the Middle dome of Kettleman Hills entered into an agreement on May 27, 1929, to suspend all drilling activities on five permits, covering portions of the Kettleman Hills Middle dome, until Jan. 1, 1931, and the owners of fee lands contiguous thereto assured Secretary Ray Lyman Wilbur, of the Department of the Interior, that they too would respect a drilling suspension for a period of a little more than 19 months, none of these interested parties realized that this was the first step in a chain of events that would culminate, more than four years later, in the formation of the Middle Dome Corporation for the development of the Middle dome area in a unit plan that would be the first unit plan to be approved by the California Regional Producers Committee and recommended to the President as a satisfactory unit plan, under Section 7 of Article III of the Oil Code, approved Aug. 17, 1933. Neither did they realize that more than two million dollars would be spent before oil or gas would be successfully and continuously produced from wells drilled on that Middle dome area. On Oct. 1, 1933, under the terms of the Middle Dome Agreement, the Middle Dome Corporation assumes control of activities and is responsible for the division of all product's produced from the Middle dome area to members of the Middle Dome Corporation. This Middle dome plan is the second successful unit plan developed in California in the past three years, the first being the Kettleman North Dome Associationll formed under the agreement, of Jan. 31, 1931, for the unified operation and development of more than 12,000 acres of land on the North dome of the Kettleman Hills. All other unit plans discussed in the past four years in the state have not yet been completed, for one reason or another, but under Section 7 of Article 111 of the new Oil Code numerous plans of development, some of which may be unit plans, will be forthcoming within the next few months. EVERY reader of this paper is well aware of the fact that the prolonged inhalation of large amounts of free silica dust results in fibrosis of the lungs, and that other inorganic dusts, except those of asbestos and the mineral poisons, are thought to be relatively harmless. But probably few have had opportunity to visualize the effects of silica, asbestos and other minerals upon living tissues. The ideal demonstration would be based upon sections of lungs from human beings that had inhaled com- parable concentrations of different dusts for a unit period of time. Such material is generally difficult to obtain and in some instances is of questionable value because the subject has been exposed to more than one kind of dust. A demonstration could be prepared from the lungs of animals. However, so many months or even years are required to complete the exposure to each kind of dust that enough material has not been accumulated. For a general survey of the action of different types of dust, I am therefore compelled to use the tissues of animals that have been injected with suspensions of dust particles. The injection method offers certain advantages. The quantity, the particle size and the state of dispersion can be controlled with sufficient accuracy so that the tissue responses to different minerals can be accurately compared. The method insures contact between the tissues and the mineral particles; protective mechanisms, which may prevent the inhalation of certain types of foreign body, never come into play. If the pathway of injection be one that minimizes nonspecific injury, the tissue responses may simulate those produced by inhalation but they develop somewhat more rapidly. It should always be remembered that injection methods merely demonstrate the capacity of various kinds of minerals to provoke reaction in the tissues; whether the same substances are inhaled from atmospheric suspension and accumulate in the lungs in dangerous quantities can be demonstrated only by inhalation. The reactions that I shall discuss first took place not in the lungs but in the liver. For the purpose in hand this is quite immaterial for we are merely seeking to discover whether these minerals are capable of produc-

YEARS of experience and research have shown that molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium are among the most useful and effective elements in augmenting the high-temperature strength of heat-treatable, ferritic steels. Grün, for example, in conducting an early survey of the strengthening effects of various elements in annealed, low-carbon steel at 750° and 930°F (400° and 500°C), found molybdenum and vanadium to be the most effective.' Holtmann comprehensively studied the strengthening effects of molybdenum and vanadium in quenched and tempered steels at 930°F as a function of microstructure and carbon content.' He found creep strength to be related to the saturation of the austenite at the austenitizing temperature, such that strength is increased by alloying until the y loop is reached—the terminus of complete austenitization. Beyond this degree of alloying, the inability to heat treat will result in lower strength, at least for low and moderate creep temperatures. Tungsten, owing to higher cost than molybdenum, has been little used in ferritic high-temperature steels. As a result, very few investigations have been made of its high-temperature strengthening ability, and reliable data on its effectiveness are not available. Grün rated tungsten far less effective than molybdenum at 930°F (500°C) on a weight-percentage basis.' However, Tammann has found that tungsten is as effective as molybdenum in raising the recrystallization temperature of iron. For this reason Smith, in a review of the subject, has advocated a re-examination of the influence of tungsten on the high-temperature strength of steel.' In any study of the effects of alloying additions on high-temperature properties, recognition must be made of the many variables involved, some of which can be controlled but have been ignored in innumerable investigations of the past, and some of which are difficult or even impossible to control. One cannot, for example, assign a definite strengthening index to any one alloying element, for this will be dependent upon the microstructure (heat treatment and mechanical treatment), testing con- ditions (temperature, time, and stress), and the complete composition of the steel (accompanying alloying elements, impurities, etc.). One ever-appear ing variable, hardness or tensile strength at room temperature, may be eliminated by heat treating all of the alloys to a single hardness level. An attempt may be made to control the variable of primary quenched structure by oil or water quenching the test specimen. The control of such variables may not be possible in cases of widely varying compositions, but at least such deviations should be recognized. Material and Procedure The alloys, made as 30-lb ingots in an induction furnace, all had the same base composition of about 0.18 pct C, 0.85 pct Mn, and 0.48 pct Si. They were grouped as follows: Mo Group—Containing up to 5.2 pct Mo. W Group-Containing up to 6.0 pct W. V Group—Containing up to 3.3 pct V. Mo-V Group—Containing up to 2.7 pct Mo and up to 1.4 pct V. Mo-W Group—Containing up to 2.5 pct Mo and up to 2.5 pct W. The steels, listed in Table I, were forged to ¾ in. sq bars and the material for the high-temperature, rupture-test specimens was further swaged to %-in. round bars.
