Canada) - The authors have introduced a subject, the intensive study of which has awaited scientific developments. These are now such as to justify a thorough review of our thinking on the causes and control of rockbursts. The formulae developed in the paper, the comparison between rockbursts and earthquakes in figure 1 and the energy data relating to explosives serve as an effective foundation. In the paper this writer is quoted as suggesting that energy of the order of 10 x 10 11 ft. lb. may have been released in some of the heaviest rockbursts in the Kolar Gold Field. He now hastens to add that such an estimate has no scientific validity. It arises only from a casual comparison of surface and underground effects of the medium heavy bursts, referred to in the paper and estimated by Jones at 3.0 x 1010 ft.lbs., with those of obviously greater magnitude. In any case, we have the estimate by Jones above, that by a team of seismologists 1 on the Witwatersrand of 10 x 1010 ft.lbs., that by Coates of 3.8 x 10" ft.lbs., also referred to in the paper, that by Blan-chard2 for the catastrophic rockburst at Springhill, N.S., of only 7.4 X 107 ft. lbs., and finally the range covered by Cook, referred to in the paper. It is probable also that data for the heavy rockburst at Merkers3 in the WERRA potash area of Germany are available as it was recorded on seismographs from Moscow to Spain. It is the writer's impression that some standardization is present in the estimates above for 10 x 10 10, 3.8 x 1010 and 7.4 x 107 ft.lbs., respectively. The latter, for Springhill, represents a relatively low order of magnitude. It is obvious that any energy estimate must be related to the local geometry of openings at the time of the event. It is also obvious that any explanation of the causes of rockburst must be capable of providing a wide range of energy. However, we must remember that the energy release is an effect indicating magnitude. The cause lies with the mechanism initiating the primary failure, generating the seismic activity, to which much of the damage is probably due.

The object of this paper is to clarify the idea, so important when exploring by potential methods, of the depth of investigation attainable by electrical measurements. After defining, with some precision, .the term "depth of investigation'' in geophysics, the authors show how it is possible to regulate this depth in potential methods and to obtain an 'electrical drilling" from surface observations. They consider also the difficulties encountered in deep measurements and indicate how it is possible to reach greater depths than those having an industrial interest. Depth of Investigation The term, depth of investigation, in its general sense, is easily understood. For instance, a driller who can pull cores from a depth of 2000 m. is capable of working, with accuracy, to that depth. By means of a properly placed drill, he may locate an orebody at a depth of 1999 m., however small this orebody may be. On the contrary, the term as used in geophysics requires precise elaboration. As a matter of fact, no geophysical method, irrespective of the physical property studied (density, magnetic permeability, conductivity), can discover a very small body at a great depth because, in practice, the physical parameter upon which such a geophysical method is based is never regular enough, throughout the ground, to distinguish the feeble anomaly caused by the small, deep-lying body from the numerous anomalies due to irregularities of the encasing terrains. Aside from this question of the ratio between the size of the body being hunted for and its depth of burial, a second factor plays its role in the possible depth of investigation; that is the difference, for the parameter under consideration, between the body and its surrounding material. The greater this difference, and the more homogeneous the encasing terrains, the greater is the possible depth of investigation. This being generally established for all geophysical methods, it is possible to distinguish two main classes of these methods, from this same point of view

WHEN the word gas is mentioned in connection with mining, almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that it must refer to coal mining. While it is true that methane occurs, or is likely to occur, in almost any or all coal mines, it is also a fact that the metal mines of the world have in them by far a greater variety of gases than have the coal mines. In many cases the gases in metal mines are as dangerous to individuals as the gases likely to be found in coal mines; in some instances the metal mine gases are even more deadly. The coal mine is more likely to have methane than the metal mine, in rare instances it may have high percentages of nitrogen or high carbon dioxide, or there may be a deficiency of oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region; much more rarely there are found in coal mines in relatively small percentages, ethane, or other hydrocarbons with odor of ether, gasoline or kerosene, or there may be minute percentages of hydrogen sulfide. In time of coal mine fire or explosion, there is likely to be high carbon monoxide (4 per cent. or over in some cases) and if the coal contains much sulfur, there may be some sulfur dioxide in the fire fumes. In metal mines there are a number of cases of occurrence of methane and attendant explosions; some metal mines have appreciable percentages of the decidedly explosive hydrogen; in some metal-mining regions carbon dioxide flows into the mine, fills the workings and overflows just like water. In other regions, at many working faces there are high-temperature gases containing a mixture of gases of sulfur (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and possibly SO3 in some cases) together with carbon dioxide and nitrogen, and the deadly hydrogen sulfide in lethal proportions is found in some high-sulfide metal mines at blasting time. Carbon monoxide constitutes a decidedly dangerous day by day hazard in connection with metal-mine blasting, because of the heavy charges of dynamite that are used and the use of fuse, which in burning gives off much carbon monoxide. The poisonous gas hazard is accentuated because of the relatively small openings where metal-mine blasting is done and to the inefficient ventilation of the usual metal mine.

A combined method for sizing in the sub-micron range was developed using centrifugation and gamma emission. Its essential features are: 1) Centrifugation of suspended mineral in water carried out at 4°C where water has its maximal density and zero temperature gradient of density 2) Gamma activition of the sample suspension induced by irradiating it in a nuclear reactor prior to centrifugation 3) Measurement of the activity of a beam of suspension as it is sedimenting in the centrifuge, using a scintillation counter provided with a discriminator. Albite, the sodium feldspar, was used as feed to the comminution step, and the induced gamma activity of Na24 was measured. Dissolved sodium ion caused a a non-settling activity in the measurement. Other "noise" is due to scattered gamma radiation from albite particles in the centrifuge outside of the line of sight. These two activities were obtained sep arately and subtracted from the total activity counted. The relative solid concentration in the suspension under the collimating slit is proportional to this net activity. The cumulative weight per cent of undersize particles was calculated and plotted against size on logarithmic scales. The relationship was found to be linear down to about 30 mµ. The specific surfaces calculated from particle size distribution agree with those measured by krypton gas adsorption. The measurement of particle size distribution of comminution products has been of interest in clarifying the mechanism of the process. The Gaudin-Schuhmann equation1,2 relates the cumulative percentage undersize, y, to relative particle size x/k. The particle size, x, and the size modulus, k, together with the distribution modulus, m, characterize the particle size distribution, m is the slope of a plot of log (y) against log (x/k). This equation has been verified for ground particles down to 1 micron in size.3'4 For particle sizes smaller than a few microns, the precision and facility of sedimentation and microscope techniques become questionable. Use of a centrifuge which shortens settling time from weeks to hours is attractive. Many centrifugal methods have been proposed; however, determination of the solid concentration of the suspension at a reference level as a function of time is difficult, and sampling the suspension is likely to introduce errors. Measurement of particle size distribution by X-ray absorption in gravitational5 and in centrifugal6 sedimentation have also been tried. In these methods, the absorption coefficient for the solid is independent of size, since the wave lengths of the X-rays and gamma-rays are orders of magnitude smaller than the particles. Radiometric techniques7 in size distribution measurement have been developed within the last several years. They offer advantages over usual gravimetric and optical methods. PRINCIPLE OF METHOD The combined method of centrifugation and gamma emission for sizing in submicron range described in the present paper has the following essential features. 1) Centrifugation is carried out at 4 ± 0.1°C. Convection currents in the water phase due to density changes caused by temperature variation may disturb completely the settling system. To avoid this difficulty, the unique property of water having zero temperature gradient of density at 4°C is used. 2) Prior to size measurement the sample suspension is irradiated in a nuclear reactor and gamma activity induced. The gamma activity of the particles sedi-mented radially is measured by a scintillation counter provided with a discriminator. By this method, interruption of centrifugation by withdrawing samples is avoided and the counting rate at any time represents the solid concentration in the suspension at the level of the collimating slit of the centrifuge at the particular time at which the measurement is made. 3) By proper selection of the feed material and of the comminution device, gamma activities of foreign

WITH the supply of zinc, like that of most other nonferrous metals, inadequate to meet the demand, efforts to increase domestic ore supplies and production capacity have been of primary interest. No major sources of new ore have been disclosed during the year but improvements have been reported in facilities for mining and concentrating ores from existing mines. The American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. has announced its intention of erecting a new mill in the Ouray district of Colorado. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada is reported to be planning improvements costing $3,000,000 to its Sullivan mine and concentrator at Kimberley, B.C., where the sink-float process is to be used for preliminary ore treatment. PREVIOUS studies of the shock loading of randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregates have firmly established that, after rather short load duration, hydrostatic compression closely approximates the shocked state.' However, McQueen deduced from pressure measurements with good time resolution that, during shock loading, metals begin to undergo a stress relaxation at the yield stress. He suggested that the relaxation is due to plastic deformation accompanying the change from a one-dimensional compression to a three-dimensional, hydrostatic, compression.' Stress relaxation may occur faster as stress is increased above the yield stress, but the existence of unidirectionally compressed states for finite times suggests that the concept of a unidirectionally distorted lattice should furnish considerable insight into the mechanical behavior of materials subjected to shock loading. Here, a crystallographic analysis is presented for the hypothetical situation where atom motion may be considered as unidirectional which, as indicated above, is a useful extension of the macroscopic concept of shock loading to the microscopic domain. Only motion caused by the com-pressive forces is treated; i.e., lattice vibrations upon which this motion is superimposed, as discussed by Fitzgerald, are ignored.3 The purpose of the analysis to be presented is to develop a description for single crystals of the lattice rotations that occur for idealized uniaxial strain deformation. The usefulness of such an analysis in realistic deformation is to give a method of specification of those properties of an initially distorted lattice which would affect the subsequent deformation. Non-axial complications that arise experimentally, such as off-axis rarefaction waves, must be treated in proper context. Consider the material element shown in Fig. 1 and let the compression be uniform at all regions of the element. Then, any interior point of the element is displaced in proportion to its distance from the base of the element. Accordingly, if the top of a unit element is displaced by an amount, (-K), with respect to the base, a point P(X, Y) will be displaced by (-KY). Crystal planes are, therefore, rotated by the compression. Analysis of this rotation may be accomplished from the geometry shown in Fig. 1 where the line OP is the edge of the plane {hkl} and N is its normal. The Empire IV expansion is on schedule for completion in January 1980; Hibbing Taconite's 2.7 million ltpy* expansion should be finished late in 1979; and Reserve Mining's tailing disposal project is on target for April 1980. Erie Mining Co., the first to bring 170-ton haulage trucks to the Mesabi Range, reports excellent operating results, and Inland Steel expects to produce 80% of its pellets in 1979 using coal rather than oil. One Michigan mine has so many inspectors that it has hired a school bus to transport them around the operation; and a contractor reports that mine construction projects of the future may require the training of 15,000 workers. All of this was covered at the 52nd Annual Minnesota Section AIME Meeting and the 40th University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, a joint event held each January in Duluth.

Development in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1943 resulted in the discovery of 11 new fields as compared with 12 discovered in the same area during I942. Of the 11 new fields, eight are classed as oil and/or condensate and three as gas fields. In addition to the new discoveries, several more or less important new horizons and extensions were encountered in some of the older fields, as noted in the text under the heading "New Pays and Extensions.'' Drilling During the year, 418 wells were drilled, as compared with 356 drilled during 1942. Of these, 323 were field wells, of which 188 produced oil, 21 were gas wells and 114 were dry holes. The remaining 95 viere wildcats, 12 of which produced oil, 4 produced gas and 79 dry holes. Distribution of themwildcats with respect to the various trends may be summarized as follows: over the 91,340,492 bbl. produced in the same area during 1942. The production statistics in the text and the accompanying tables include condensate or distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties all of the drilling and production" data applicable to this particular area. Outstanding Fields of 1943 The Upper Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 178 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the 1943 discoveries. Of these Table 4 lists those that were most important from the standpoint of production. Each of these fields pro duced in excess of one million barrels of oil during 1943. Some of the interesting facts to be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields are: (I) four of the fields— namely, Conroe, Hastings, Friendswood and Thompson—each produced more than 10 million barrels during 1943, whcrcas Conroe and Hastings were the only fields that produced 10 million barrels during 1942; (2) some of the older fields (discovered prior to 1920), such as Barbers Hill, West Columbia, and Hull, are still producing in excess of one million barrels annually; (3) some of the fields more than doubled their 1942 production—e.g., Anahuac and Friendswood. The large increase in production in practically all instances is the result of increased allowables from wells drilled prior to 1943 and

Through the generosity of Sir Robert Hadfield, Honorary Member, the Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers are enabled to announce the Hadfield Research Prize of $1,000 for the best contribution to the publications of the Institute upon the general subject of The Different Forms and Combinations of Carbon with Iron, including those in Iron Alloys. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1916, to the best paper upon this subject which is presented to the Institute before Nov. 1, 1915, provided such paper is deemed worthy by the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee. The following suggestions are also added for the guidance of those who may take part in this research. While it is not desired to define closely the exact lines or scope of the proposed research, as it is advisable to make these as broad as possible, the object in mind may be said to be generally as follows: To elaborate and find out the best methods of determining the forms of carbon in steel or iron, including those in iron alloys. A portion of the work would probably be a continuation of the researches which have in the past been carried out by Jullien, Abel, Muller, Ledebur, T. Sterry Hunt, Akerman, Arnold, Stead, E. D. The potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corp. is about 18 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in sec 1 and 12, T 22 S, R 29 E, N.M.P.M. Potash is produced from two zones in the Salado formation of late Permian age. The lower zone, consisting of a mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), lies at a depth of about 900 ft, and the upper zone, in which the principal potassium mineral is langbeinite (K2S04.2MgS0d), lies at a depth of about 800 ft. Because of the plastic nature of the material, fractures in the Salado formation are extremely rare and have been noted only on the 800 ft level of the International mine. The open fracture described below is almost unique. Only one other open fracture has been noted, and it was on a working face in the same general area as the one described, but was destroyed before the writer had a chance to examine it. According to J. E. Tong, foreman on the 800 level, this fracture was similar to, but smaller than, the one herein described.

After a few percent strain, dislocations in disordered Cu3Au are arranged in groups in ulell-defined slip planes, which contrasts with the more or less random distribution of dislocations in the corresponding ordered alloy. Unusually long and straigkt dislocation segments observed in the ordered alloy are interpreted in terms of cross slip of screw dislocations from their slip planes into cube planes. It is proposed that cross slip, and also dislocation reactions of the Lomer type, play an important role in work hardening of the ordered alloy. ACCORDING to to dislocations in the disordered lattice are only partial dislocations in the corresponding super lattice, so that in the super-lattice dislocations must occur as pairs, with each pair connected by a ribbon of antiphase boundary. Recently, striking confirmation of the theory was obtained by Marcinkowski, Brown, and Fisher3j4 in a study of dislocation configurations in thin foils of the Cu3Au alloy by transmission electron microscopy. In the present investigation, the observations made by these workers have largely been confirmed. Moreover, it has been found that dislocations in the plastically deformed ordered alloys are often unusually long and straight. This paper is mainly concerned with these new observations. A tentative explanation is offered in terms of cross slip of dislocations in the ordered alloys. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS An alloy close to the stoichiometric composition Cu3Au was prepared by melting together high-purity copper and gold (99.995 pct) under vacuum in a graphite mold. The resulting ingot was rolled down and cut into strips 1 1/2 by 1/8 by 0.005 in. in thickness. All strips were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and cooled to 500'~. A few of the strips were quenched from ~OO'C, while the remainder were slowly cooled in the temperature range 400" to 150°C at intervals of a few degrees every 24 hr to produce a high degree of order. After this annealing treatment the average grain size of the material was about 0.1 mm. Material in different states of order was obtained by reannealing fully ordered material at temperatures below the critical temperature: followed by quenching. The equilibrium degree of order attained at a particular reannealing temperature was obtained from the paper by Keating and warren.' A simple hand-operated tensile jig was used to give the strips the required amounts of plastic strain. Following straining, a number of specimens were cut from each strip by means of an electrolytic cutting device.= Finally, each specimen was thinned electrolytically using the polishing procedure described by Bakish and Robertson,7 and these thin sections were examined in the Philips EM-100B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS Antiphase boundaries. The average domain size in the ordered alloys was found by direct observation to be about 0.25 p. Also, it was observed that the grown-in configuration of antiphase boundaries was changed little by plastic deformation, at least up to 6 pct strain. Fig. 1 shows an electron micrograph of a thin foil of partially ordered alloy (S - 0.8) after 3 pct strain. The micrograph shows a few dislocation pairs and a somewhat crystallo-graphic network of antiphase boundaries. A simplified theory of viscous fingering in miscible systems has been developed. It predicts the correct functional relationship between pertinent variables and permits the calculation of the order of magnitude of fingering behavior for simple systems, such as linear or radial. The theory is based on the following four observations: (1) cross-flow takes place only near the ends of fingers; (2) the relative finger width is about 0.5; (3) fingers can be suppressed by transverse dispersion, the suppression being quantitatively described by a critical ratio of dispersion times; and (4) the widths of extending fingers are close to the minimum size finger that can grow at any stage of displacement. Fingering is studied in two-dimensional linear and diverging radial systems, both theoretically and experimentally. For linear systems, the length of the fingered region is proportional to mean displacement; the finger width is proportional to square root of mean displacement; and there is a small initial region void of fingers because of suppression by longitudinal dispersion. For the radial system, two limiting conditions are recognized. If the mean displacement is small compared with the wellbore radius, the length of the fingered region is proportional to the mean displacement. The width is proportional to the square root of mean displacement. If the mean displacement is large compared with wellbore radius, length of the fingered region is proportional to mean displacement, but the number of fingers approaches a constant value. Also, in the radial case there is a small initial region void of fingers because of longitudinal dispersion. INTRODUCTION The behavior of viscous fingers in miscible systems has been of interest to the oil industry for many years. Previous studies have clearly shown the existence and nature of fingers in small models.1,2,3,4 Engineering techniques for extrapolating to reservoir situations have been proposed. 5,6 Still, because of the lack of a real understanding of the mechanics of fingering, there remains uncertainty and disagreement as to the best way to scale or calculate fingering behavior in the reservoir. In this paper we discuss a study of the mechanics of fingering in miscible systems (i.e., why do fingers behave as they do?). A simplified theory is developed which we believe will (1) predict the correct functional relationship between pertinent variables, (2) permit us to calculate the order of magnitude of fingering behavior for simple systems such as linear and radial, and (3) give further insight into the problem of scaling or otherwise extending the results to more complicated reservoir conditions. The paper includes the following sections: (1) brief summary of the mixing behavior of miscible fluids in linear and radial systems; (2) four fundamental observations of fluid flow (under fingering conditions); (3) based on these four observations, a simplified theory of fingering in linear and radial systems is developed; and (4) the theoretical equations are compared with experimental fingering data measured in laboratory models. A REVIEW OF DIFFUSION AND DISPERSION As will be shown later, the behavior of viscous fingers in miscible systems is controlled in large degree by the mixing between the two fluids. A quantitative description of fingers will first require a quantitative description of mixing. Fortunately, much work has been done to clarify this subject; a fairly comprehensive review has been presented in a previous paper. 7 For present purposes let us (1) briefly summarize the quantitative description of diffusion and dispersion (both longitudinal and transverse) within a differential element; (2) present a simplification of the "width of mixed zone"; and (3) describe the effect of geometry on width of mixed zone. The purpose of this investigation was to measure PVT behavior of various types and combinations of heavy hydrocarbon components from the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic classes where the relative proportions Of the various components were selected to approximate those of natural gas or gas condensate systems. Synthetic mixtures were used so that the compositions Of the various components could be measured accurately. n-Heptane, methylcyclohexane and methylbenzene were used to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic components of the heavy fraction. In the mixtures studied, the heavy fraction composition was held constant at O. O5-mole lraction, the balance being methane except for one mixture where 0.10-mo1e fraction of an intermediate component, propane, was added. The PVT data for the mixtures were determined in a variable-volume, constant-mass apparatus at psuedo-reducedtemperatures from 1.84 to 2.00, over a pseudo-reduced pressure range from 2.3 to 12.0. The experimental results showed that, regardless of the type of heavy material (paraffinic, naphthenic, aromatic, or combinations thereof) mixed with methane or methane and propane, the compressibility factors at equal values of pseudo-reduced temperature and pressure varied by less than 2.2 percent. INTRODUCTION PVT data is used for natural gas and gas condensate fluids in determining reserves of reservoirs and performance of wells, in metering produced fluids, and in recombining samples for laboratory studies. While there are vast amounts of PVT data reported for natural gas and gas condensate systems from which useful correlations have been developed, ' the compositional analyses for these systems and the resultant correlations typically were made with components analyzed through some arbitrary carbon number, usually C6, with the residue reported as a lumped "heavy" fraction. The heavy fraction was stoichiometrically recombined on the basis of an apparent molecular weight to give the final compositional analysis. It is virtually impossible to make a systematic analysis of the effect that variation of the relative amounts of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic constituents of the heavy fraction of natural systems might have on PVT behavior. Because there is considerable latitude in the relative amounts of these constituents, one speaks of crudes or condensate liquids as being "paraffin base", etc. It is of interest to determine if changes in the relative amounts of these three types of hydrocarbons in the heavy fraction cause significant changes in PVT behavior. If so, steps should be taken to describe better the nature of the heavy fraction in PVT correlations. If not, more confidence can be placed in the correlations presently employed. DESIGN OF THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION We attempted to determine if changes in the base of the heavy fraction would cause significant changes in the PVT behavior of gas or gas condensate fluids. Synthetic mixtures were used to enable us to systematically vary the base of the heavy fraction and to analyze accurately the fluids. We found that the heavy fraction of naturally occurring condensate systems seldom exceeds 0.05-mole fraction. Thus, the mole fraction of the heavy fraction in the synthetic systems studied was set arbitrarily at 0.05, to maximize whatever deviations in PVT behavior that might occur. Further, we judged that since the C7 hydrocarbons normally are present in greater quantities than higher carbon number hydrocarbons in naturally occurring systems, the use of n-heptane, methyl cyclohexane, and methylbenzene to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic species in the heavy fraction would be most appropriate. THE Mining Methods sessions, one of which was run jointly with the Industrial Minerals Division, were fortunate in having a number of exceptionally fine papers. At the Tuesday session R. P. Smith presented the results of six years' experience with prepaid medical care for the employees of the Hollinger mine. It was felt that this paper was a real contribution to the cross field of mining-medicine, and the presentation was exceptionally well done. Olof V. Lindqvist acquainted us with the consider- able progress made in blast-hole diamond drilling in recent times, especially in Canada. The opening of a mine is always a matter of considerable interest and the description of the procedure and problems encountered in opening the Mather mine of Cleveland Cliffs Iron was presented by L. C. Moore.

The conditions affecting the supply of casinghead gas, the different degrees of productivity, the difficulty of determining the quantities utilized, and the evaluation of the gas in casinghead-gasoline units and related data, having an economic bearing on the industry as a whole, are important questions and offer an interesting field for study. Casinghead-gas data have been gathered in some of the oil fields of Oklahoma where testing work has been done regularly and the volumes of casinghead gas were available. The area covered embraces 219 scattered leases in 29 townships, with a total of 18,039 acres and 1921 wells. The accompanying table gives specific locations of the areas under consideration, number of leases, range depth of wells, average age of production, sand depths and oil production data. The results of this investigation are set forth in the accompanying charts, showing volumes of casinghead gas in 6-month periods from Jan. 1, 1918, to June 30, 1921, when full record was available, production of casinghead gasoline, average productivity of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet, average price of the gas and the market price of the casinghead gasoline. The cases enumerated in the table and the data shown in the graphs do not represent the greater part of oil or casinghead gas production from any one township, nor are the leases contiguous. The properties in each township, however, may be considered as typical of general conditions, such as the date of completion of wells, depth, character, and thickness of oil sand, time of pumping, present oil production, Vacuum carried on wells, and usual operating practices. It was deemed advisable to subdivide the time into 6-mo. periods, as it was impracticable to make the tests more frequently, furthermore 6 mo. is probably the minimum period within which there would occur a noticeable increase in the productivity of the gas. It must be remembered that the figures on volumes are subject to the usual irregularities and relative inaccuracies of meter measurenlents of gas under varying degrees
