The compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and -2 20°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. Although many binary paraffin hydrocarbon systems have been investigated, the experimental work relating to the phase behavior of ternary paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures at elevated pressures is relatively scarce, being limited to a study of the meth-ane-propane-PL-pentane system at 100°F.l,2 However, Guter and co-workers have studied the phase behavior of the methane-ethane-ethylene system at relatively low temperatures. Information concerning the phase behavior of ternary systems is of value in predicting the behavior of the components in multicomponent systems, since the influence of pressure, temperature, and concentration may be individually ascertained. In the light of the importance of such information, the study of this ternary system was extended to higher temperatures in order to increase the field of temperature in which the data could be applied. Since all states encountered in this investigation are above the critical temperature of methane, the details of its phase behavior are not of direct significance. The properties of propane in the heterogeneous region were taken from a correlation3 based upon recently published data. The corresponding information for n-pentane was taken from experimentally measured vapor pressures and volumetric data.4 The rnethane-propane system has been studied throughout the two-phase region at temperatures above 70°F.,5 while the phase behavior of the propane-n-pentane system has been established for temperatures above 160°F.6 The volumetric and phase behavior of the methane-72-pentane system has been studied in detai1.7,8 The experimental measurements serve to establish with adequate accuracy the phase behavior of the components and of the constituent binary systems for this ternary system. It is believed that, with the exception of the measurements for the methane-propane system, the uncertainties in the earlier data relating to the pure substances and the binary mixtures are probably less than those associated with the values reported here. Method The methods and apparatus employed in this investigation have been described.137 In principle, the method involved the withdrawal of samples of the coexisting gas and liquid phases from a vessel containing a heterogeneous mixture of methane, propane and n-pentane. W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors' contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. These observations do not, of course, detract in the least from the results of the work under discus-

ONE who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regula-tion of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the Wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920-to the end of 1934-the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are- considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing., of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneco-nomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. Top-slicing was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent of the Santa Gertmdis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 354.2 ft.) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. and an average width of 82 ft. and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing. Description of Block of Ore Former operators, when mining the original vein, left in the foot wall ore of too low grade to be profitable at the time; also, considerabe low-grade material was sorted out and stored as filling in the stopes. Some pillars were left in place, either for support or because they were not payable. All this has formed a body of ore that can now be exploited

The petition for the formation of a Tulsa Section was granted. The final budget for the year 1917, and the tentative budget for the year 1918, were adopted. The Secretary was instructed to continue to send the Bulletin to all members whose dues have been remitted on account of their being in the war service, but to hold the Transactions and send them on request to the address furnished for the purpose. The issues of the Bulletin were presented to the Federal Fuel Administration, at its request, with the compliments of the Institute. Fifty-nine Members, five Associates, and fifteen Junior Members were elected. The resignation of one member was accepted. The clues of four members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. An extension of time for the payment of clues was granted to four members, upon request.

By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore- deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flowage, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrystallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

It would be extremely difficult and unfair to compare the United States to Australia when wondering about which of the two countries offers the best opportunities for running a mining operation. However, if somebody would ask "Where is the best place to mine outside the US?"-I'd answer without reservations: Australia. Some of my Australian mining friends will disagree with me for my giving their country such a high rating. And they'll probably accuse me of being an optimist by telling me, as one of them did, that "the difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed."

SEVERAL attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealing Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced; with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary The theory of Jeffries1 that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel3 Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4,5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some' grain boundary migration The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that-can be introduced by mechanical deformation An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation the rate of growth in a specimen which would show - growth in the unstrained condition Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pct it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 5 ½ in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an

INTRODUCTION SINCE the first determination of Dumas1 in 1880, many authors have tried to measure the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum, or at least the amount of dissolved gas in it. However, the interpretation of the results which have been obtained is still difficult. Sieverts,2 then Baukloh and Oesterlen,3 during their gassing experiments could not determine any solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum. On the other hand, Portevin, Chaudron and Moreau,4 leaving the determination of the hydrogen solubility beyond the scope of their experiments, measured only the amount of gas that they could extract by high voltage positive ion bombardment and found up to 151 cm3 of gas per 100 g of metal. Winterhager,5 by repeated vacuum extraction during severe cold rolling, extracted up to 161 cm3 per 100 g. In both series of experiments, the extracted gas contained chiefly hydrogen with a small amount of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methan. Later, Schmidt and von Schweinitz6 as well as Chaudron and Moreau7 showed the importance of the adsorbed layer of hydrogen, the extracted quantities being proportional to the surface and not to the weight of the sample, when its cleaning was not perfect. In earlier experiments, Steinhauser8 extracted from more massive samples nothing but a little amount (< 0. 5 cm3 per 100 g) of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. Thus, according to these experiments the quantity of dissolved gas is probably very small and the effect of the surface could falsify the results of the extraction. However, owing to the care taken by Chaudron and his coworkers, it was clear that all the hydrogen extracted could not come from the superficial layer, or that the links which bound hydrogen to the surface were so strong that the usual method of cleaning could not destroy them. After the main parts of the experiments reported here had already been carried out, Eborall and Ransley9 published the results which they obtained with an analysor having an accuracy of 0.03 cm3 per 100 g, while that of the usual apparatus was only about 0.2 cm3 per 100 g. During all their experiments the adsorbed layer would have been a difficulty, for the value of the adsorbed hydrogen was approximately equal to that of the dissolved amount. It has been demonstrated in the laboratory by A. J. Phillips1 that a transformation or conversion from beta directly to alpha may take place in a brass of 61 to 62.5 per cent copper content. The completion of the transformiation is dependent on a rapid rate of cooling from the all-beta field through the alpha + beta range to the alpha field. Phillips states that in a slowly cooled alloy containing 62 per cent copper and 38 per cent zinc the copper content of the beta is progressively decreased from 62 to 56 per cent by precipitation of alpha. Rapid cooling tends to prevent the separation of alpha with a copper content of more than 62 per cent by reducing to a minimum the time required for passing through the alpha + beta range. Upon crossing beyond the (alpha + beta) (alpha) boundary to the all-alpha region below, the material is transformed from beta to alpha. It, is essential that there be no change in composition. Phillips obtained his results by quenching a 62:38 copper-zinc alloy from 850" C. in iced brine at -8" C. No reference to the occurrence of this transformation in a manufacturing process has been found in the literature. An investigation of the microstructures of a number of hot forgings made from leaded brass rods yielded one forging in which this striking conversion from beta to alpha had occurred. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transformation and certain conditions under which it may occur during the hot pressing of brass. The conversion was noted in a shape forged from a leaded brass rod, the composition of which was: Cu, 60.26 per cent; Zn, 37.86; Pb, 1.88. In this study the lead content was disregarded and the alloy was considered to be equivalent to an alloy of 61.40 per cent copper and 35.60 per cent zinc (9812 parts = 100 parts). The possibility that the lead might obstruct or accelerate the precipitation of alpha was not studied. The lead appears as black globules in the photomicrographs and has a negligible solubility in the alloy.

World War II has developed a use for the nonmetal mineral quartz crystal that was unknown in World War I. During the interim period of peace, experimental work in the radio field with the piezoelectric properties of quartz crystal resulted in the almost universal adoption of quartz-crystal radio oscillator plates to control frequency in radio broadcasting, police, commercial and amateur communications equipment. Telephone resonators and filters made from quartz crystal also were developed, which vastly improved the frequency control of long distance telephone circuits. Expansion of the Industry The sudden war demands of the armed services for radio equipment using quartz crystal for frequency control led to an unprecedented expansion of the manufacturing industry. It is estimated that the 1940 peacetime volume amounted to approximately $1,500,000, while today a vast new quartz-crystal industry supplies more than $150,000,000 worth of quartz oscillator plates to the Army and Navy each year. This demand has caused an enormous expansion not only of American manufacturing facilities but also of Brazilian mining output, virtually our only source of raw quartz crystal. Actual figures of imports and consumption cannot be cited, for security reasons, but certain comparisons have been made, which indicate the transformation of quartz crystal from a minor to a major nonmetal. Lundl has shown that the value of quartz-crystal exports from Brazil is now about equal to that of phosphate rock produced domestically in 1941 and actually exceeds the combined value of crude feldspar, gypsum and fluorspar production in the United States in the same year. This great expansion under wartime pressure was not accomplished without some anxious moments, but all the demands of industry have been met and the Government has been able also to accumulate a substantial stock pile of material against future contingencies. Inspection and Grading of Quartz Crystal The swift growth of the quartz-oscillator industry necessitated the simultaneous evolution of methods and criteria for inspecting and grading quartz crystal. It has been found that, generally speaking, it is economically feasible to cut only crystals that are at least 30 per cent by volume free from major defects such as optical and electrical twinning, cracks and fractures. Blue needles, bubbles, "chuva" and other minor imperfections can be tolerated in the usable portion unless present in great excess. The present marketing system in use in both Brazil and the United States, as far as quality is concerned, depends solely on the "usability" of a crystal, which is defined in the Brazilian-American agreement2

D ETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and dewatering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.1

An earlier paper on the general subject of the SP log has analyzed the limitations of that log, in particular when dealing with thin permeable beds enclosed in thick highly resistive ones. Under such conditions, the SP log does not give a good definition of the permeable beds. Selective SP logging is a new method which gives an accurate determination of the permeable beds; even in highly resistive formations, except when the salinity of the mud is extremely high. It also permits a close approxi. mation of the static SP to be obtained. The method consists generally in controlling the potential of auxiliary electrodes located in the drill holes in the vicinity of the measuring electrode. In this manner. the flow of SP current along the drill hole is modified to counterbalance the effect of highly resistive strata. Several procedure; and arrangements used to record selective SP curves and static SP curves are explained. Field examples illustrating these methods are given and discussed. INTRODUCTION In an earlier paper,&apos; the shape of the SP curves and the amplitude of the SP peaks were analyzed, considering how the circulation of the SP current is influenced by the subsurface media as a function of their geometrical configuration and their resistivities. It was shown, in particular. that the permeable beds situated between highly resistive formations are sometimes indistinctly indicated by the deflections of the SP log. It is the purpose of this paper to dircuss a new method now being developed, namely selective SP logging, whose principal feature is to enable a more accurate determination of the depths of the permeable beds present in highly resistive formations, such as occur in limestone fields. It will be shown also how an addi-tional curve called the static SP log can be derived from the selective SP log, or recorded directly, to facilitate the interpretation. Another purpose of the static SP log is to provide an approach toward the determination of the value of the static SP, where this value is not readily given by the SP log. This application. although less important at the present time than that mentioned above, nevertheless is of interest, inasmuch as, according to laboratory and field experiments conducted by several investigators, the determination of oil saturation of reservoirs from the data of the electric log implies the knowledge of the resistivity of the connate water,2,3 to which the static SP seems to be related.4,5,6,7 PRINCIPLE OF SELECTIVE SP LOGGING The method of selective SP logging of the formations traversed by a bore hole consists in recording two curves under the following conditions: The measuring device comprises one measuring electrode M and two additional electrodes G-G&apos;, connected to each other. located above and below

HARD as it is at any time to provide more than three million tons of coal each year for power plants, the task really gets rugged in the wintertime when the fuel freezes solid in the cars. At the Marysville plant of the Detroit Edison Co. the problem of unloading cars of frozen coal was severe because there was an unloader over only one of the two tracks in the coal unloading house. Moving downward by their own weight, with no driving force to aid them, the spuds of this old unloader were unable to break through the crust on a frozen coal car. 20,000 Lb Force To meet this problem, a new mechanical car unloader was installed over No. 2 track and placed in service in December 1947. It is a Kenney type unloader built by Heyl & Patterson, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a modification of equipment originally designed to unload iron ore cars. The major advantage of this unloader is the force with which it can drive the sharp spade on the end of its ram down through the pockets of a frozen coal car. The unloader consists of the following major units: 1. A traveling bridge structure. 2. A traveling trolley. 3. A retractable and oscillating ram. 4. The operators cab and controls. The bridge is provided with safety hooks to prevent its being lifted from the rails by the upwards push of the ram. The bridge will travel 190 fpm and has sufficient traction on its four wheels to move three loaded 70 ton cars. The trolley runs on tracks supported by the bridge girders and also has upper tracks to control the push from the ram. Two of the single-flange trolley wheels are driven by a one and a quarter hp dc motors equipped with magnetic brakes. The ram is raised and lowered by a 20 hp dc motor equipped with a magnetic brake. A full stroke of a little over 14 ft is given the ram through its rack and pinion drive and the spade can be pushed down into a loaded car with a force of about 20,000 lb. A 15 hp dc motor with a magnetic brake is applied to this drive and is able to swing the ram 45º either side of the vertical. The usual procedure in emptying a coal car is first to drive the sharp spade down through the coal until the pocket is opened and the coal starts to run out the hopper. When all the hoppers are open, the sweeping action of the ram and spade is used to move the remainder of the coal in the car over to the open hoppers. The travel of the trolley permits cleaning the sides of a coal car with the edges of the spade, using the sweeping motion of the ram. It is still necessary to clean out the corners of the car by hand. Final Clean-Out This unloader was a new development and there were improvements to be made before it was completely satisfactory, such as reduction in speed and conversion to ac drive motors. However, it helped at Marysville and unloaded many frozen cars that would have taken a lot of heating to thaw out enough for the old unloader to handle. The mechanical coal unloader described above was a considerable improvement but still left a job to be done by hand-the final cleaning out of the coal cars. The ram had the ability to open a hole through the hopper cars, but did not meet required unloading speed.
