To date. utility company underground storage of gas has generally been restricted to depleted dry gas fields. The Playa del Rey project is probably the first to successfully store gas in a partially depleted oil reservoir with the recovery of large volumes of pas at high rates as the main objective. Oil recovery has been a secondary consideration. Problems encountered unusual to those of storage in a dry gas zone were: (1) the removal and retardation of formation of emulsion. (2) the upstructure movement of fluid during withdrawal periods which formed fluid blocks, and (3) reservoir shrinkage resulting from encroachment of edgewater. The solution of these problems as outlined in the paper has resulted in increasing the withdrawal rate from the original design capacity of 4,000 Mcf per hour to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour. Additional increase is anticipated as the operations continue. Migration. reservoir performance. operational procedure and a historical record are included to make this a resume of the project from its war-time inception in 1942 to the first of 1952. INTRODUCTION The Playa del Rey underground gas storage project is probably the first project in which gas has been stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir, with the recovery of large volumes of gas at high rates as the main objective and the recovery of oil a secondary consideration. Problems unusual to those of storage in dry gas zones have made this a pioneer endeavor. The total storage capacity of approximately 1,500,000 Mcf of this reservoir is small in comparison with other underground gas storage projects. However. by study and experiment the deliverability into transmission lines. operating at pressures in excess of 150 lbs., has been nearly tripled in the past three years. to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour late, without the use of compression. It is anticipated this rate will gradually increase as additional fluid is removed from the formation. LOCATION AND HISTORY Playa del Key is located on Santa Monica Bay about two miles south of the beach commuity of Venice and 15 miles southwest of the renter of the City city Los Angeles. Fig. 1. The discovery well was completed at 6,194 ft in 1929. An upper zone at 3,905 ft was found on June 18. 1930. Townlot development was very rapid and by the end of 1930 there were 141 producing wells in the field. The Union Oil Co. completed a lower zone well south of the Townlot Field in May, 1931, which was believed to be an extension, until additional drilling of about 50 wells during 1934 and 1935 indicated this area to be a separate accumulation as shown on Fig. 2. The lower oil horizon, which is now the storage zone, had no original gas cap and is believed to be a continental detrital deposit of conglomerate that accumulated in valleys and depressions of a weathered schist high. which later subsided and was overlain by an impervious nodular shale. This type of formation has rapid variation of porosity. permeability and thickness due to lack of sorting action common to marine deposition. and the uneven surface of the original schist high. Production was limited on the upstructure sides by the pinching out of the conglomerate, and downstructure by edgewater. Unrestricted production, together with high permeabilities, led to large wastage of gas from this new area as facilities were not available for transport of gas to market. The decline was very rapid and by 1942 the portion of the new area south of Ballona Creek was nearly depleted. A method of calculating activities in binary systems having miscibility gaps is described. The method, which applies only to the phase in which the gap occurs, is exact when the function defined by the equation varies linearly with composition. Analytical and numerical solutions (as a function of the conjugate phase compositions) are presented for two coefficients A and B from which the thermodynamic activities can be calculated. Deviations from Henry's law, calculable by the method presented, are shown graphically for the particula~ case of the component i at the edge of the miscibility gap more remote .from pure component i. For symmetrical gaps, the deviation from Henry's law at this gap edge becomes smaller as the gap becomes wider, The interrelation of gap location, the direction of departures from Henry's law and the occurrence of maxima and minzma in these departures is discussed in some detail. Values for a and for activity calculated from phase diagrams show fair to excellent agreement with corresponding experimental values in the Al-Zn and CaO-SiO2 systems. WHEN structurally similar phases, B and 6, lie at the sides of a two-phase region in a constitution diagram, it can be assumed that, stably or metast-ably, they will become completely miscible at a higher temperature. The B and 6 phases are particular composition ranges of a single B6 phase region with a miscibility gap. Below, as above, the critical solution temperature, the free energy of formation of the 06 phase is a continuous function of composition through the range of the miscibility gap. It is the purpose of this paper to use this continuous free-energy function in order to develop a simple method for computing the thermodynamic activities in the B6 solution of a binary system. The object of this paper is to describe and discuss the progress that has been made, up to the present date, in the development of the modern by-product coke-oven. There are few members of the Institute who have not heard more or less of the by-product oven-installation, and there are many whose acquaintance with it is intimate and practical. Since the general opinion on the subject has hardly become crystallized as yet, it is hoped that this paper will at least furnish matter for discussion. The oxygen activity and concentration were measured in Fe-Cr-0 melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity was determined by ,use of the following solid oxide -electrolyte galvanic cell CY-Cr8,(s) I ZrOz(CaO) I Fe-CY-G(saturated)(l) The oxygen concentration decreases with increasing Cr concentration to about 270 ppm 0 at about 7pct CY and then increases gradually. The activity coefficient of oxygen (fo) decreases with increasing Cr. In melts containing up to about 20 pct Cr, log f is approximately a linear function of wt pct Cr with a slope (e q 2) of —0.037. The activity of chromium was calculated and found to exhibit a small negative deviation from Raoult's law. From the activity and solubility data for low chromium melts, the free energy of formation of chromite, FeCr204, was found to be -79.8kcal per mole where pure liquid chromium and oxygen at I wt pct in Fe are the standard states. ThE effect of chromium on the chemical behavior of dissolved oxygen in liquid iron is of great importance in controlling the deoxidation of steels containing a significant amount of chromium. Chen and chipman' equilibrated Fe-Cr melts in the presence and absence of slag with hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. They concluded that at 1595°C chromite was the oxide phase in equilibrium with Fe-Cr alloys containing less than 5.5 pct Cr while at higher chromium concentration Cr,O, was the stable phase. In the composition range 0 to 10 pct Cr they found that the interaction coefficient, was equal to -0.041. Turk-dogan,' Schenck and Steinmetz,, and pargeter4 measured egr) in a similar manner and found the value to be -0.064,-0.04, and -0.052, respectively. McLean and Be11 evaluated egr) from their data on the equilibrium of Fe-Cr-Al-0 alloys with H2/H20 mixtures and found it to be -0.058. However, McLean and Bell's value should only be considered an estimate because the effect of aluminum on the activity coefficient of oxygen is about a hundred times greater than that of chromium. Consequently, an error in the value of egl) used, which at the present time is not well-known, or an error in aluminum analysis, which is present in very small quantities, will result in a significant error in egr). Fischer et a1.6 determined the interaction coefficient (eEr) in Fe-Cr-0 melts not in equilibrium with an oxide phase and containing less than 18 wt pct Cr at 1600°C electrochemically. They determined a value of -0.031 for egr). Hilty et aL7 measured the oxygen content of Fe-Cr melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase containing up to 50 pct Cr. They found that the solubility of oxygen decreased as the chromium content increased to about 6 pct Cr and then increased gradually. They concluded that the equilibrium oxide phase was chromite below 3 pct Cr, distorted spinel from 3 to 9 pct Cr, and Cr,04 above 9 pct Cr. Adachi and lwamotoa also investigated this system, but did not find Cr30,. They X-rayed the equilibrium oxide phases and did not find the presence of Cr,O,. They also X-rayed the oxide phase extracted from a 65 pct Cr melt which was heat treated and did not find metallic chromium as would be expected if Cr3O4 were the equilibrium oxide phase as indicated by the reaction : 3Cr3O4 — 4Cr2O:, + Cr [lj It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine the effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of oxygen in Fe-Cr melts by measuring the activity and solubility of oxygen equilibrated with an oxide phase in the composition range 0.18 to 50.5 wt pct Cr at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity of oxygen in the melts was determined by use of the following galvanic cell: The relationship between the partial pressure of oxygen in equilibrium with the melt and the reversible electromotive force of the cell (E) is where 11 = 4, F is the Faraday constant, pb, is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the meit and is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with Cr203 as determined from the free energy data compiled by Elliott et al? The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium was assumed to be Cr If Cr30, were the equilibrium phase the activities derived would be approximately the same, since the best estimated free energy of formation of Cr,O,, if it does exist, is approximately % the free energy of formation of The activity of chromium in Fe-Cr alloys at 1600° C was also determined from the measured electromotive force. The activity of chromium (aCr) is related to the electromotive force as follows: , The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium and Fe-Cr melts from 10 to 52 pct is assumed to be Cr203 so that n equals three. If future work proves the existence of Crs04 in equilibrium with Fe-Cr melts and pure chromium, the experimental results can be reevaluated using a value of $ for n in Eq. 141. A value of ^ for n will make the activities about 10 pct higher. In order for Eqs. 131 and [4J to be valid the electrolyte, ZrOa(CaO), must exhibit predominantly ionic conduction at the temperature and oxygen partial pressure of its use. The Sc-Y and Sc-Zr systems were studied by thermal and X-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415 °C at 30 at. pct Zr. INTEREST in the metals of the first transition series has usually stemmed from their useful properties; however, there is now a great deal of interest in determining the fundamental nature of these metals. Since scandium is the first of these transition metals, a study of the preparation and Properties1 and the alloying behavior of scandium2 was initiated. In a continuing study of the alloying behavior of scandium, the systems of scandium with zirconium and yttrium have been established. Extensive solid solubility in both the Sc-Zr and Sc-Y systems was expected from application of the classical rules of Hume-Rothery. Also, the modified Darken and Gurry plot as suggested by Gschneid-ner3 showed ideal conditions for solubility in the Sc-Zr system with less favorable conditions in the Sc-Y system. The effect of scandium on the transformation temperature of zirconium and yttrium was of interest, since a recent empirical observation by Uly and Burr4 predicted that the solute scandium would raise the transformation temperature of zirconium and lower the yttrium transformation. In addition to noting the validity of the above predictions, the SC-Y and Sc-Zr systems were established. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials. The metals employed in this investigation were crystal bar zirconium, distilled scandium prepared by the method described by Spedding, et al.1 and yttrium prepared by the method described by Carlson, et a1.5 The major impurities present in these metals are listed in Table I in ppm. Alloy Preparation. All the alloys examined were initially formed by comelting the two metals in a nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace under an atmosphere of purified helium or argon. The buttons were inverted at least five times and re-melted each time to ensure homogeneity. During preparation of Sc-Zr alloys, approximately 1 wt pct was lost which was attributed entirely to the loss of scandium by distillation. When preparing Sc-Y alloys, approximately 1.5 wt pct was lost, but it was assumed that the intended composition was maintained, since the relative weight lost when arc melting the component metals was nearly the same. Samples weighing 15 to 20 g were prepared for time-temperature thermal analysis, while only 1- to 2-g samples were prepared for the optical pyrometer and X-ray diffraction studies. Thermal Methods. The solidus and the melting points of the metals were determined by an optical pyrometer method described previously.2 The temperatures at which the transformation from hexagonal to bcc occurs were determined by differential thermal analysis. Several points on the solidus and liquidus in the Sc-Y system were also determined by this method and are in good agreement with those obtained by the optical pyrometer method. The procedure followed in the preparation of samples for thermal analysis and the furnace used have been described elsewhere.2'6 Since a limited quantity of scandium was available, most of the alloys were not melted during thermal analysis, thus avoiding contamination by the crucible. The alloy could then be reused and the composition changed by adding the desired quantity of solute to obtain the next alloy. Heat Treatment and X-Ray Methods. In order to ensure homogeneity, the "as arc-melted" alloys Were wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed in quartz capsules and heated at 1100°C for 15 hr and then cooled at a rate of 8 deg per min. (Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) DURING the winter of 1868-9, I was called upon by Professor F. H. Storer, to put up the Bunsen filter pump in the chemical laboratory of the Masschusetts Institute of Technology. As the laboratory is on the lower floor, it was found necessary to use a great deal of cumbrous pipe and apparatus to get the necessary column. It was then suggested that if an instrument could be devised which would make use of the hydrant pressure in the service-pipe, it would do away with the objectionable features of the Bunsen pump. After using the Bunsen pump for some years, the jet pump to be described in this paper was devised, and it has since been adopted by Prof. Wing in the quantitative laboratory of the school. I am much indebted to Prof. Wing for his aid in starting the manufacture in brass of these jet pumps, which are now to be had in Boston. The jet pump much resembles the Giffard injector in form. It differs from it in the fact that water is the impelling fluid, and air the impelled, while with the injector steam is used to impel water. The principle of condensation of steam, which is Water availed of in the injector, is entirely wanting in the jet pump. The jet pump consists in a water jet, w, (see figure), a constriction or waist, a, and a waste tube, o. The success of the jet pump depends on the following conditions 1. The relation between the sizes of sectional area of a and w. 2. The proximity of a and w. 3. The form and angle of the two hollow cones whose vertices make the constriction a. 4. The relative size of sectional area of w and o. 5. The zigzags, or an equivalent means of making foam. A review of production in the Eastern District for 1930 is necessarily brief. Drilling operations were curtailed, due to economic conditions, which in turn reduced production. However, in spite of these conditions, there have been a few outstanding developments which surpass any of recent years. The development of a field in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, New York, has been rapid and probably reached its peak of production in 1930. The gas in this field comes from the White Medina Sand (Silurian), at an average depth of 2600 ft. Some of the wells had an open flow of 20,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day,' with an original rock pressure of 965 pounds2 per square inch. Another area developed during 1930 was the Tyrone field, in Tyrone Township, Schuyler County, New York. This field was discovered 2nd is practically controlled by the Belmont Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. of New York. The production is from the Oriskany Sand (Devonian), which is found at an average depth of 2100 ft. The field covers approximately 2000 acres, and to date has 14 producing gas wells. The largest well had an open flow of 15,000,000 cu. ft. and an original rock pressure of 740 Ib. The gas from this field is impregnated with sulfur, and requires washing before it is marketed. Because little is known of the Oriskany Sand, a brief description may be of interest. This sand outcrops at Oriskany Falls, New York, and has a thickness of 10 to 12 ft. Its texture is coarse grained, it is composed mostly of quartz and is a regularly bedded sandstone. At Yauger's Wood, in Cayuga County, New York, it is exposed and shows a thickness of 26 feet. The discovery of the Tyrone field led to much prospecting in the New York and the northern part of Pennsylvania, and as a result of this search, the Allegany Gas Co. struck a large gas well in Farmington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which created considerable excitement through the Eastern District. Cheep tests are normally constant load tests. Such tests approximate some types of service conditions and therefore are justified from the engineering point of view. Coupled with this consideration is the advantage of simplicity inherent in constant load tests, as contrasted with the comparatively complex requirements of a constant stress test. It is not surprising that the vast majority of creep tests reported are of the constant load type. Despite the enormous amount of accumulated creep test data, plastic flow is by no means completely understood. The widespread use of constant load tests is at least partly responsible for this lack of understanding. Any attempt to analyze deformation must involve the more fundamental quantity stress, rather than load. It is possible to predict constant load behavior from known constant stress data, but the reverse is much more difficult. When a metal specimen elongates, as in a creep test, the cross section decreases, maintaining constant volume. Thus For a constant stress test the force on the specimen must be decreased as the cross section decreases, that is, this force must be inversely proportional to the elongation of the specimen. An-drade has described three methods of obtaining the constant stress condition,l-3 each of which is relatively complex. The most recent proposal,³ suggests a major simplification which maintains the simplicity of the constant load test while approximating quite closely the desirable condition of constant stress. Andrade's device is admittedly more accurate but the method described below has definite advantages Consider a specimen in the form of a "V" supported at its ends. The quantity sec — thus decreases with specimen elongation while the quantity 1/A increases. By selecting proper initial conditions it should be possible to hold S/So very nearly constant at unity. The proper initial conditions are realized when a0 is made equal to approximately 90°. Fig 1 compares the ratios of S/S0 for a0 = 85, 90, 95, 100°, with a0 = 0, that is, a straight speci- men, for true strains up to e = 0.10. It may prove convenient to measure X, the movement of the vertex, rather than the true elongation 1. Contour lines of X/lo are also plotted in Fig 1. The method for obtaining constant stress described above is especially suited to the testing of small wires, but may easily be extended to rods of any diameter through the use of a suitable grip which serves as the vertex joining two identical rods forming the legs of the "V." Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED'S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enormous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engineers, superintendents, and' others, in mastering &he problems which are constantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal-liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects : 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. I t must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupation in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centers, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. I t is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above mentioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. TWO serious hazards from coal dust confront the bituminous-coal miner- -a physical or safety hazard and a physiological or health hazard. The first threatens the miner with loss of life from coal-dint explosions, and the second with loss of health and earning capacity from inhaling large quantities of the dust. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that coal dust, except some grades of anthracite dust, is capable of initiating an explosion when no explosive gas is present and that its property of extending or propagating an explosion has been responsible for nearly all the widespread explosions that have occurred in bituminous mines in the United States in the present century. For years many mining people believed that low-volatile coal dust was not explosive but not only is it explosive but if the source of ignition is intense, it is as explosive as the dust of many high-volatile coals because the war is creating increased pressure for greater coal production and because of the trend toward greater mechanization in mines, explosion and health hazards from coal dust are likely !n increase considerably.

A drop calorimeter system is described for use in measuring enthalpies to 3600°K. Data are presented for tungsten between 2800" and 3600°K. The enthalpy of tungsten in cal per mole between 2000° and 3600°K can be represented by the equation HºT- Hº298 = - 1.7622 X 103 + 5.7772T + 8.9861 where T is in degrees Kelvin. A tabulation of com -puted values is presented for heat capacity, entropy, and free energy function. A drop calorimeter has been constructed to carry out enthalpy measurements at temperatures to 3600°K. Samples are heated by induction1 and dropped into a commercial adiabatic calorimeter, modified for this purpose. The experimental temperature is limited by the melting point of container materials and compatibility of the container and its contents. Several high-temperature drop calorimeters have been described in the literature1-5 but none has been used at temperatures as high as those in the present work; our measurements of the enthalpy of tungsten range from 2800" to 3600°K. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT An overall schematic view of the equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Power for the induction coil is supplied by a 25-kw 250 kHz Ther-Monic generator coupled to an iron core RF transformer. The Sample capsule is suspended in the work coil by 10-mil diam tungsten wires which are wrapped around a horizontal 5-mil diam tungsten wire. The horizontal suspension wire is clamped between two massive copper electrodes which are fixed in an x-y motion device that allows adjustment of the position of the heated capsule from outside the vacuum chamber. The copper electrodes are connected by flexible copper straps to a 1250-joule (5 kv, 100 pfarad) condenser bank. When it is desired to release the capsule, the condensers are discharged through the horizontal suspension wire causing it to vaporize rapidly. Very reliable and precise release of the capsule is achieved in this manner. Experiments have shown that no heat correction is required for this discharge energy. As part of the temperature measuring system, two prism holders have been incorporated in the apparatus. The upper prism holder is in the main vacuum chamber itself, whereas the lower one is in a side arm attached to the drop tube below the gate valve. The upper prism is mounted on a rotary vacuum feed-through, and may be moved under a protective shield when not in use. This prevents deposition of vapors on the prism surfaces when temperature measurements are not being made. Similarly, the lower prism is mounted on a push-pull vacuum feed-through, and when not in use may be pulled into its side tube. The prism mountings are fitted with guides and stops so that they may be moved precisely into the desired position. The aim throughout is to minimize the time the prisms are exposed to vapors from the hot samples. At the high temperatures reported in this paper, only the lower prism was used. The upper prism holder in these cases was fitted with an additional radiation shield. By using a prism and viewport, the lower surface of the samples can be observed by an optical pyrometer. The measurements discussed in this paper were obtained with a Leeds and Northrup 8622-C-S series manual pyrometer which is estimated to be accurate to 0.5 pct. Pyrometer calibrations and prism and window corrections were carried out in the conventional manner6 using tungsten strip lamps calibrated by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England. Prism corrections were rechecked after each use. All work to date has been done in vacuum, and no measurable change has been observed in the prism correction below -2300°K for the upper prism and below -2800°K for the lower one. The total time of exposure of the prisms is about 50 sec per run. At high temperature, the final temperature reading is corrected by using the final A value for the prism; see Ref. 6 for details of this procedure. The calorimeter is a modified Parr Instrument Co. (Moline, lll.), Series 1230 adiabatic calorimeter with automatic jacket control. Other authors5 have used a similar calorimeter with good results. The calorimeter jacket cover and calorimeter cover are attached to the drop tube which contains a radiation shield. This shield is a gold-plated copper disc which can be operated manually from outside the calorimeter. The receiver is attached below the radiation shield and is lined with tungsten. In a typical experiment, the calorimeter and its jacket water temperatures were adjusted to 0.000°K temperature difference. The sample was allowed to equilibrate in the furnace at the desired temperature for about 20 min. The initial calorimeter temperature was then recorded, the sample dropped, and appropriate shutters closed. After about 3 min, the drop tube and receiver were filled with helium to 60 torr. The final calorimeter temperature was recorded after it had remained constant over a 5-min period. The equilibration time in the calorimeter was about 25 min. Thermistor probes are used to operate a hot and cold water supply system to maintain the jacket temperature equal to the calorimeter temperature. For actual measurements of the calorimeter temperatures, a quartz thermometer was used (Hewlett Packard Dymec Thermometer, Model #2801A). This thermome-

THE Tri-State Zinc, Inc., Galena, Ill., was confronted with the problem of securing ore from a deposit because the hoisting shaft was several thousand feet from the mill. The orebody is several thousand feet long, averaging 200 ft in width and 60 ft in height and opened up by vertical shafts some 300 ft deep. Mining is by the room-and-pillar method. During the initial operation the ore was loaded by conventional electric 1/2-yd boom-and-dipper shovels and hauled to the shaft by 8-ton diesel trucks. This underground ore loading and hauling was well adapted to the conditions and productive of low costs per ton. However, with the mill situated as mentioned, a triple handling of all broken rock was necessary: l—from the stope to the shaft by truck, 2—up the shaft by skip br can into the surface hopper, and 3—by truck from the surface hopper to the crushing plant at the mill. In addition to the repeated handling, serious troubles were encountered during the winter because of freezing in the shaft hopper. Consideration was given to either moving the mill to the new orebody or to the construction of a second mill. The presence of other orebodies to be mined at a later date made the first alternative impractical while the capital outlay for a second mill, when the present plant of approximately 850 tons per day was deemed sufficiently large for the total reserves, made the second alternative also unwise. It was decided to retain the mill in the originals location and continue to move the ore to it. The idea of driving an inclined adit from the surface to the bottom of the orebody suitable for truck haulage and big enough to allow the passage of all mechanical equipment was conceived. Among the apparent advantages of such an incline were: 1— Direct haulage from the stope to the mill without rehandling. 2—Elimination of virtually all grizzlies. Trucking from underground to the mill would do away with all hoppers, chutes, gates, and skips and make the maximum rock size dependent solely on the size of the shovel dipper at the mine and the crusher opening at the mill. 3—Less secondary blasting would be needed. 4—Ease of transporting equipment and supplies underground. Shovels and trucks could be taken through the incline intact. 5—Equipment could be brought to the surface for repairs and servicing without loss of time. The same advantages of ease in moving would be present in the handling of men, steel, powder, and supplies. 6—There would be far less difficulty in increasing the amount of tonnage that could be moved by truck up an incline than would be found in attempting to increase the capacity of a shaft. 7—All the broken ore in the stopes would serve as bin capacity, as it would take the breakdown of all of the loading and hauling equipment to have the same effect as a delay in shaft hoisting. 8—All danger of men being trapped in the mine as a result of shaft fire or power stoppage would be eliminated. 9— Virtually all trouble from severe winter conditions would be eliminated by the direct haul underground to the mill. The decision was made to proceed with the driving of an inclined adit. The topography of the surface between the orebody and the mill was such that it was possible to locate the portal at a point 170 ft above the mine floor and 1800 ft horizontally from the central point of the orebody to the south and 2500 ft from the mill to the north. A grade of 10 pct was found to be optimum for continuous truck haulage when the various factors of speed, safety, and truck maintenance were all considered. The incline as driven was consequently 1700 ft long on 10 pct grade and 12 ft high by 17 ft wide in cross section. The tunnel-driving equipment was chosen so that it could be used in mining after the completion of the tunnel. Drilling was done with a jumbo with two Joy jibs mounting 3-in. drills, loading with an Allis-Chalmers diesel-powered, front-end loader of approximately 11/4-yd capacity, and hauling by Koehring Dumptor trucks of 8-ton capacity, diesel-powered. The width of the tunnel allowed the end loader and Dumptor to be placed abreast. Since the Dumptors can be driven either forward or backward with equal facility, loading was accomplished without turning around either machine throughout the loading operation. The crew in addition to the tunnel foreman was comprised of three men per shift at the start and in the later work, four men. Each crew could perform any part of the working cycle. If the drilling was completed and the round blasted in the middle of a shift, the same men would proceed with the loading and hauling. Since the mine already had been drained to the bottom levels, no water was encountered. At the halfway point the tunnel was widened for approximately 100 ft to permit trucks to pass. The total cost of the tunnel excluding the capital outlay for equipment, which was all continued in use in the subsequent mine operation, was $60,363.00 or $35.50 per ft. The tunnel was completed at the end of June, 1949 and has been in continuous use since that time. In the five months from July to November inclusive, 106,049 tons have been transported to the mill or an average of 835 tons per day. No unforeseen disadvantages have been encountered and the advantages which had been predicated before the adit's construction have been more than realized. As previously mentioned, the deposit is worked by the room-and-pillar system with occasional faces up to 125 ft high. Except in driving development drifts when diesel-powered, front-end loaders such as were used in the tunnel are employed, all shoveling is done by Yz-yd boom-dipper type shovels electrically driven. These units need a width of 25 ft and a height of 14 ft in which to operate. All hauling is by diesel trucks, mainly Koehring Dump-tors.
