John Birkinbine was born Nov. 16, 1844, at Reading, Pa., the eldest son of H. P. M. Birkinbine, widely known as a hydraulic engineer. The family removed subsequently to Philadelphia, where, as a young man he established with his father the office now, continued by his sons, after more than 60 years. His education was received at public schools, the Friends' High School in Philadelphia, the Hill School at Pottstown, Pa., and the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, where his studies were interrupted in 1863-4 by service in the Union Army, which included participation in the battles at and around Gettysburg. Later, he devoted two years to work in a machine shop; and subsequently he became associated with the late P. L. Weimer, under the firm name of Weimer & Birkinbine, operating the Weimer Machine Works at Lebanon, Pa. Much of his work was in mining, metallurgy, and blast-furnace construction. As manager for the South Mountain Mining & Iron Co. he carried on experiments with various fuels for iron-ore smelting while maintaining the furnace in constant operation. The carefully recorded results obtained were widely published, and are referred to in text-books by other metallurgists as most complete. From his Philidelphia office he was sent to nearly every State, and to Canada and Mexico, for examinations, reports, constructions or im-provements in iron-ore mines, blast furnaces, iron works, water supplies, hydraulic development, irrigation projects, etc., and his engineering knowledge was requisitioned by several Eukopean corporations. A number of business trips were made to Mexico, beginning with a visit to the Cerro de Mercado at Durango,,before railroads were established in that. portion of Mexico, to make a critical examination and report on this "Iron Mountain." Later visits covered other localities and engineering problems, familiarizing him with the major part of the iron industry in Mexico. The late disturbed political conditions in that Republic have retarded the probable enlargement, modernization, and improvement of much of the iron and steel industry of Mexico, upon which he investigated and . reported for various capitalists on both continents. One interesting subject included in these reports was a proposed electric furnace, to be operated by energy from water power.

RETURNS already received from a current survey of the enrolment of students in the mineral technology schools indicate a degree of activity and prosperity in those schools never before equalled. The returns are as yet too meager for accurate analysis, but those at hand point LO considerable increase in the metallurgical and petroleum engineering groups, and indicate that the total of 5011 two years ago in the United States schools will be substantially increased. Generally speaking, the enrolment is not only maximum in quantity but optimum in quality. Better income has sent the boys back to school, but the improved employment conditions have somewhat reduced the number of graduate students. Laboratories are commonly filled to capacity, in some instances overcrowded. Increased enrolment of foreign students from both Canada and South America is noticeable.

Today there is unparalleled opportunity for constructive effort in the national mineral economy on the part of the Land-Grant colleges and universities. The matter is too important to be pushed aside. It is inevitable that in the aftermath of World War II, conscientious Americans the country over should want to take stock of national resources. Attention is now centered, as never before, on our mineral potentialities. Opportunities and responsibilities are unparalleled and a condition exists which will not occur for another generation. Mineral industries educators cannot pro- vide the answer without taking stock of its component parts, organizing, planning, and taking action in a real dynamic sense. The services encompassed by the various fields of mineral industries must be utilized to help in the solution of problems provided by the international emergency, the country's needs, the people's needs. Mineral industries colleges have a vital role in technical aid to backward countries through foreign student programs, especially in the Latin Americas.1 By helping them to help themselves develop and utilize their resources to the fullest, we will be helping ourselves. One day they may be a Godsend in a solution of the American demographic problem. They may be prepared to

The use of cadmium as a base for bearing metals is one of the most interesting recent developments in this field. It has caused a strong demand for cadmium and a marked rise in its price. It appeared to the authors, therefore, that the situation might be relieved for users if acceptable substitutes could be developed. A preliminary investigation has revealed that to some extent mercury may be substituted for cadmium. Whether its use is justified cannot be stated at this time. Most of the authors' work has indicated that the addition of mercury to alloys of cadmium and nickel detracts from their desirable physical properties; but this work has not been extended to cover service tests, which might reveal that the addition of low percentages of mercury to the cadmium-base alloys would improve their performance. The results of tests made by the authors are therefore briefly summarized for this paper. Table 1 gives the proportions of the metals used in preparing the alloys. After preparation of these alloys, th composition was checked by chemical analysis. Particular care taken to ensure that the nickel content did not vary appreciably from 1 per cent.

The Minas de Matahambre No. 2 shaft, vertical, four-compartment lined with steel sets and hardwood lagging, has been sunk 2057 ft. On account of rock structure, over-all cross-section dimensions are 23 by 6 ft. Certain sections have been concreted. Two compartments are for handling ore and men, one for supplies and men, and one for manway, cables and counterweight. Two 250-ton capacity skip pockets with air-operated gates and steel cartridge pockets have been installed underground. A steel "A" headframe, a 250-ton steel receiving bin, and skip-to-man-cage changing equipment have been provided. Skip capacity is 102½ cu. ft. The hoist is a Nordberg double-drum 10 ft. by 6 ft. 6 in. geared, electrically driven, with parallel grooving for 1-?in. cables. Maximum hoisting speed is 1600 ft. per minute. The motor-generator set, control panel, slip regulator and hoist accumulator are housed in the basement of the hoist house. The electrical equipment is General Electric. The direct-current hoist motor is 800 hp. Control is of the Ward-Leonard-Ilgner type. The motor-generator flywheel set, normal speed 720 r.p.m., consists of an 800-hp. induction motor, a 22-ton flywheel (dia. 117 in.) and a 650-kw. generator.

On October 20, 1964, in his Waldorf Towers suite, death came to Herbert Clark Hoover, 31st President of the United States. At his bedside were his two sons, Allan A. and Herbert Hoover, Jr. Many years of humanitarian and public service earned him the gratitude of millions here and abroad. The Nation mourned his death. For the mining fraternity and AIME in particular, the life of Herbert Hoover held particular meaning. During the years from 1895 to 1914 when he was actively engaged in mining, he conducted himself with extraordinary competence, energy and integrity. In the years following, when his qualities of administration and leadership literally forced him into the limelight, he continued his interest and lent his talents for the benefit of the engineering profession.

THE SEAL BEACH oil field is between the Long Beach and Huntington Beach oil fields, south of Los Angeles, and about half the productive area is with-in the city limits of Long Beach. The proved area lies in portions of Sections 2, 3 and 11, T. 5 S., R. 12 W., S. B. B. & M. Seal Beach is 'an additional link in that remarkable chain, of oil fields extending from Newport to Beverly . Hills, filling in one of the few remaining gaps. It differs from other fields along this line of folding in that it is an oil field in an area of tide lands. Ocean-connected sloughs have access to this area, which ac-counts for its extensive mud flats. The surface eleva-tion of the low ground varies from 2 to 5 ft. above sea-level. This condition called for much preliminary work in building roads prior to field development. Roads are constructed with dredges and drag-line scrapers, which excavate mud from alongside the proposed road and pile it up to a grade high enough to be above high tide. The road bed is then surfaced with gravel, or decom-posed granite, which makes it serviceable in all kinds of weather. An immense amount of road material has already been hauled into this field. Well locations are staked in the mud flats, sometimes ahead of road build-ing, and material is dragged to its place on the ground by tractor. It is necessary to drive piling to support derrick foundations. The present practice is to drive 5 piles for each derrick leg, 4 under the rotary table, 2 under the draw-works, 2 under the Samson post and 4 under the pipe rack, a total of 32 piles. This pro-cedure is, of course, varied to suit special conditions, using either more or less piling.

On Aug. 25, 1911, a rail failed on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, causing a disastrous wreck. The surface of the fracture was in a plane at right angles to the length of the rail. There was a dark-colored, oval spot on this surface, located on the gage side of the head, representing the part of the rail which was the first to fracture. The nucleus of this spot showed that the fracture had an interior origin. Other fractures of this kind, the peripheries of which had not reached the surface of the rail, presented surfaces having a (silvery luster. The darkened surface of the present fracture was caused, doubtless, by the air having had access to it. This fracture was recognized as a fatigue fracture, of a modified type, its interior origin having been due to a component in the rail which is not usually present in cases of fatigue fractures. The metal next the running surface of the head of the rail was in a state of internal compression, this being the component not commonly met with in other cases, and which caused the fracture to have its interior origin. For the purpose of giving this modified type of fatigue fracture a specific name, for identification, the term "transverse fissure" was applied. No mystery was thought to attach to its formation, or to its development. The explanation of its occurrence seemed obvious in the light of common knowledge upon the behavior of steel under repeated alternate stresses.' By reason of the state of internal compression at the running surface, the maximum tensile stresses in the head, ander bending loads, were along an interior element. Here the tensile strains were higher than in the fibers more remote from the neutral axis. Under such conditions the fracture of the rail would be expected to have an interior origin. A discussion of the subject of transverse fissures essentially becomes a discussion of fatigue fractures, since they are believed to be identical. The descriptive term employed, merely for the identification of this type of fatigue fracture, had the appearance of creating alarm. The effect of temperature as a parameter in ore flotation has not been systematically studied, although for some ores it has been known for many years that selectivity and grade of concentrates can be improved by conditioning or flotation at moderately or substantially elevated temperatures. In 1934 Coghill and Clemmer' stated that "elevated temperature seems to make hard water more tolerable" in soap flotation, and a cursory examination of the literature indicates that some earlier investigators were aware of beneficial results obtained by floating above room or mill-water temperatures. Tartaron,2 Mitchell et aL.,3 and particularly Hamilton et al.' have shown that high pulp temperatures give high recovery and selectivity in soap flotation of fluorite from a variety of gangue minerals. As a result of the work of these and of other investigators, high-temperature flotation has been successfully applied to industrial flotation of fluorite. Falconer" stated: "The use of high temperature conditioning (above 35°C and preferably above 60°C) in connection with the soap flotation of nonsulphide ores, as covered in B. Kalinowski's French Patent No. 847,-215, Dec. 7, 1938, is claimed to provide more intense activation, better separation of values from gangue, and reduction in quantity of reagents." The various investigations quoted above clearly demonstrate the improvements to be realized by increasing the temperature at which fluorite is floated, and it is surprising that little or no information has been published on systematic investigation of the same method as applied to other ores. The present article describes comparative results obtained at room temperature and at elevated temperatures by otherwise conventional flotation of iron ores, by single-mineral flotation in the Hallimond tube, and by contact-angle measurements. It is not the purpose of this article to evaluate the commercial feasibility of high-temperature flotation of iron ores, although preliminary calculations show that the cost should not be excessive and that the gains to be realized may well outweigh the extra cost of heating the pulp. LABORATORY FLOTATION TESTS Experimental: All flotation tests reported in this article that use a laboratory Fagergren cell were made on ore A (either containing the primary slimes or deslimed at 20µ as specified) following the preparatory procedures described elsewhere- or this particular ore. Ore A contained hematite, goethite (limonite), quartz, chert, and minor quantities of magnetite. Confirmatory tests made on other ores show that the same general principles apply to ores of similar mineralogy and structure. Conditioning was performed by adding the collector, as a soap, to the vigorously stirred and heated pulp. Conditioning time was 5 min, the pulp contained 60 pct solids, and the equivalent of 0.5 Ib of fatty acid was added per ton of original (unde-slimed) ore. The pH of the pulps ranged from 6.8 to 7.1 (25°C measurement) during conditioning. The pH was adjusted in the flotation cell by addition of either NaOH or H2SO4, the values reported being those of the pulp cooled to 25°C. During conditioning and flotation the pulp temperatures were controlled within l° to 2° by immersion of Variac-controlled Calrod elements in the conditioning beaker and in the cell, and by the use of water, heated to the appropriate temperature, for transferring pulp, adjusting pulp volume, and washing. Selectivity indexes have been calculated on the same basis as those reported in the article by Cooke, Iwasaki, and Choi." Results: Table I gives the results obtained by floating deslimed ore A with pure oleic acid at 25" and 50°C, and Fig. 1 shows the selectivity indexes plotted against pH of flotation. ONE of Tungsten Mining Corp.'s Vance County, N. C., mill near Henderson was the installation of a new crushing plant with a capacity of 45 to 50 tph. During 1953 the milling rate was jumped from 650 tons to 800 tpd simply by expanding existing facilities, eliminating bottlenecks, and making changes in the existing and new circuits. Previous expansions in 1951 and 1952 raised mill capacity from 300 tons to 650 tpd. In its latest move, Tungsten Mining decided that expansion of existing facilities would be more economical than building that normal production was uninterrupted. For the engineering and design of the new crushing plant and mill expansion the services of the Southwestern Engineering Co., Los Angeles, were obtained. During the year 1933, in the Texas Panhandle, 113 oil wells were completed, adding 33,337 bbl. to the daily potential of the field. The field potential on Jan. 1, 1933, as determined by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 149,260 bbl., with a daily allowable production of 41,000 bbl. The potential was raised gradually, until on July 16, 1933, it reached 155,344 bbl. with a daily allowable of 55,000 bbl. This potential and allowable was maintained over a period from July 16, 1933, to Sept. 8, 1933, when the potential was reduced to 136,893, with a daily allowable of 43,727 bbl. Since Sept. 8, 1933, there has been a gradual increase, until on Jan. 1, 1934, the field potential reached 159,740 bbl. with a daily allowable of 42,000 bbl. Of this amount 26,429 bbl. arc "marginal oil" and 2682 bbl. are exempt on account of water. Deepening of Wells During the year 64 wells were deepened, increasing their total oil production 9631 bbl. per day. Of this amount the Gray County granite wash contributed 9256 bbl. from 57 wells. It has been found in many places that the granite wash carries an additional oil pay from 50 to 75 ft. below sea level. Damage to production wells subjected to the high temperatures associated with in-situ combustion projects has been a problem since the advent of this thermal recovery technique. Injection of water down the annulus of hot wells has been successfully utilized for cooling and prolonging the life of such wells. A mathematical model that is suitable for predicting the effectiveness of cooling water in a particular application is developed. Typical results for practical ranges of the various parameters involved are presented. INTRODUCTION In the normal course of in-situ combustion operations, highly damaging conditions develop in the production wells as the combustion zone approaches, and these wells are subjected to high temperatures (up to 1500F). The resulting well damage is recognized as one of the more serious operating problems unique to the in-situ combustion process. Even in operations where well completions have been specifically designed to cope with this problem, the question arises as to how this destructively high temperature can be kept within tolerable limits. A simple and economical approach to this problem is to circulate cooling water down-hole. This method has been used with some success in shallow reservoirs. At greater depths, however, the heat exchange with the overburden surrounding the well and between the fluids in the tubing and the annulus tends to equalize the temperatures of the two fluid streams so that the cooling capacity delivered to the bottom of the hole decreases with well depth. This method would provide no appreciable control over the bottom-hole temperature at great depths. In order to delimit the condition under which cooling by water circulation is effective, the wellbore temperature must be related to the water inlet rate and temperature; to the reservoir depth, production rate, and initial temperature; and to the combustion at at bot tom-hole depth. A model that meets these requirements and that will offer an approach for developing engineering solutions to practical design and operating problems is described in this paper. MATHEMATICAL MODEL Previous studies of temperature distributions include those for flowing wells1p2 and those for hot fluid injection. Adams and Haddenhorst 6 presented solutions for the down-hole circulation of hot oil in the treatment of paraffin-deposition problems. In this paper the thermal model presented by Ramey 4 is adapted to the flow system shown schematically in Fig. 1. The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

Summary INTRODUCTION The Chem-Seps Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange (CCIX) contactor was first conceived of in 1951 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In the 27 years that have passed, there has been a steady stream of pilot plant process development studies on a variety of processes far too numerous to mention. These have been in the area of water and waste treatment, chemical processing, ore leach treatment, and many others. Many successful production systems have been installed and operated in a variety of applications. A few of these are described herein together with a description of the system and its operational characteristics. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Chem-Seps Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange* is a single loop in which various sections are separated by valves to isolate the sections performing different functions simultaneously. (Refer to Figure 1). To explain the working of a typical unit, let us use a simple configuration used in water softening or demineralization. The resin is moved in small increments by the hydraulic ram action. All solution flows are countercurrent to the flow of resin. The contaminants are removed in the process cycle and the resin is moved in the pulse cycle. A controller in the effluent stream from the treatment section senses the proper limit permissible in the effluent. In the process cycle, the influent enters through a set of distributors, moves downward and leaves through a set of collectors. Simultaneously the regenerant enters through valve RE and leaves through valve WA. The rinse enters through valve RI and its duration is controlled by an interface controller. In the process cycle, valves B, C, and D are closed, isolating all the sections. The duration of the process cycle is 4-10 minutes depending on the contaminants to be removed and is controlled either by a timer if the contaminants are fixed, or a controller in the effluent stream, if the contaminants fluctuate at short intervals. Valve A is open and resin is dropped to the pulse section simultaneously with the removal of contaminants in the treatment section, regeneration of loaded resin in the strip section, and rinsing of regenerated resin in the rinse section. As the resin drops through the valve A, it is backwashed to remove the suspended solids or resin fines. Removal of these fine particles is important to avoid the unnecessary pressure drop in the bed and plugging of the distributors. At the end of process cycle, all flows going into the unit and out of unit are automatically shut off. The valve A closes and valves B, C, and D open in proper sequence. A slug of water enters through valve PU, a predetermined incremental volume of resin moves into the regeneration section, an equal volume of regenerated and rinsed resin enters the bottom of the treatment section, and an equal volume of the loaded resin leaves the top of the treatment section and goes into the resin reservoir section. The total time required for proper sequencing of valves and the movement of resin is 20-30 seconds. At the end of this period, the valves B, C, and D close and valve A opens. AT elevated temperatures. most metals react with oxygen, sulphur, or halogen rather rapidly, although a coherent layer of the reaction product is formed and separates the two reactants from each other. The reaction proceeds, since one of the reactants or both dissolve and diffuse across the reaction product. In many cases the rate is diffusion-controlled as is indicated by the validity of the parabolic rate law of Tammann' and Pilling and Bed-worth. wott and Gurney' have suggested that diffusion processes also play an important part in the case of reduction reactions. This is confirmed by observations reported below. In general, however, the rate of reduction reactions is determined not exclusively by diffusion processes. Reduction of Silver Sulphide Above 179°C silver reacts with liquid sulphur very rapidly. Since the volume of silver sulphide is much greater than that of the equivalent amount of silver, a coherent layer of silver sulphide is formed in accordance with a rule established by Pilling and Bedworth.' According to Wagner','' silver ions and electrons migrate from the Ag-Ag,S interface across the silver sulphide layer to the Ag,S-S interface where the following chemical reaction takes place: 2 Ag +2 e + S Ag,S If silver sulphide is reduced by means of hydrogen, the equivalent volume of the reaction product, silver, is less than that of the initial substance. Accordingly, no coherent layer of silver is formed. Instead, fine filaments of silver grow from the silver sulphide surface into the ambient gas. This phenomenon has been investigated by many authors, especially by Kohlschiitter," who has also reviewed previous literature. Kohlschiitter has interpreted the observed phenomena by migration of "silver" dissolved in silver sulphide. According to Wagner,' silver ions and electrons are the migrating particles. The sequence of consecutive steps involved in the reduction of silver sulphide is shown in Fig. 1. Every- where at the silver sulphide surface, hydrogen reacts with sulphur so that excess silver ions and electrons are formed, which migrate at random until they are captured by a nucleus of metallic silver. If such a nucleus lies on the surface and material is furnished only from the base, the original nucleus is pushed outward and thus a filament grows. Removal of sulphur and formation of metallic silver may also take place at different points when silver sulphide is reduced by copper. The reaction is usually formulated as: AgL,S + 2 Cu = Cu.S + 2 Ag but the actual reaction products are silver and a solid solution of the two sulphides. Primarily, excess silver and electrons dissolved in silver sulphide are formed. After a certain degree of supersaturation has been reached, nuclei of metallic silver may form. If, however, a silver foil is in contact with the silver-sulphide phase, as is shown in Fig. 2, silver ions and electrons will migrate to the Ag,S-Ag interface where they are captured. To confirm this scheme, a composite sample, with the geometry shown in Fig. 2, was made by pressing silver sulphide tablets 0.6 cm in diam and 0.4 cm high together with a copper cylinder and a silver foil in crucibles of iron, which does not react appreciably with silver sulphide at 400°C. After heating for 3 to 7 hr at 400°C. the specimens were cut normal to the phase boundaries. It was found that the thickness of the silver foil had increased from 0.01 cm as initial value to a maximum value of 0.06 cm. In the interior of the silver sulphide tablets only traces of metallic silver were observed. These observations show clearly that silver ions and electrons may migrate over distances of several millimeters before they form metallic silver. Reduction of Cuprous Sulphide by Iron The behavior of cuprous sulphide is very similar to that of silver sulphide, since the lattices of the high temperature modifications are identical, but in Cu.S there is a variable deficit rather than an excess of metal. To investigate the displacement of copper by iron, cuprous sulphide powder covered by a copper foil was pressed in iron crucibles and heated up to 800 °C for 3 to 7 hr.
