CERTAIN typical characteristics of bauxites, ores of aluminum permit their classification into a number of categories, each of which has special features that enable grouping within it deposits from widely scattered bauxite fields. There may be local variations in conditions that have introduced differences of lesser importance between similar deposits in different fields, resulting perhaps from the influence of factors other than those that have produced the distinguishing features of each of the different groups, but in general the similarity between the deposits in each group is sufficiently striking to make the grouping indicated of interest. Several factors and conditions enter into the decomposition process that results in the development of bauxites and laterites and affects their character. The principal conditions favoring optimum bauxitization are: (1) pres- ence of rocks with easily soluble minerals yielding residues rich in alumina; (2) effective rock porosity, enabling easy access and free circulation of water; (3) normal to abundant rainfall alternating with dry periods; (4) vegetation, including bacteria, advantageously distributed; (5) available sources of appropriate solution and precipitation agencies; (6) a tropical or at least a warm climate; (7) low to moderate topographic relief, allowing free movement of the water table but a minimum of erosion; and (8) long quiet periods in earth history. Assuming that all of these factors are operating to a greater or less degree, it seems that the one that affects most the physical character of the resulting bauxite or laterite deposits is the chemical and mineralogical composition of the rocks that by their decay yield the bauxite deposits. This factor is used in the classification followed in this paper. In the process of weathering of ordinary silicate and carbonate rocks of the earth's crust, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin, it is the minerals of the alkalies that yield most readily to attack. The alkaline earth compounds also offer no great resistance, particularly the carbonates. Thus, among the rock-forming elements, those producing the most insoluble compounds are aluminum, iron, and silicon, together with certain ones of less importance, such as titanium, manganese, and phosphorus. In 1820, the Board of Public Works was considering some improvements to the canal, in order to reduce the cost of transportation, and in its annual report for that year gives a description of the method of loading the coal from the pit to the boat, and also from the boat to the dealer's yard, which is illuminating in showing how coal of this type should not be handled. It follows:- "It will be seen by the estimates, that the improving the present canal, forming a canal of large dimensions, from the head of the present lower canal to Sabbot Island; erecting locks of large capacity, and making a communication with the river, so as to completely accommodate the coal trade, (except it should hereafter be found necessary to make another communication with the river,) will not cost more than 126,000 dollars. But as there is some doubt whether the streams that may be received into the canal between Sabbot Island and the upper arch, will at all times be competent to supply the locks on that portion, we will extend our calculation to a point nearly half a mile above Pleasants' Island; where, by erecting a dam, any desired quantity may be thrown into the canal. This extension of the canal with one lock, and the dam across the river, is estimated at 34,000 dollars, making in the whole a little over 160,000 dollars. There will then remain a surplus of 40,000 dollars after completing the works to the point last mentioned. "In order to discover what effect the improvement of this first section will have on the tolls, it will be necessary to take a view of the present state of the coal trade, and endeavor to ascertain what change will result from the increased facility of transportation. "That part of the business which is carried on by water, is conducted nearly in this way. When the coal is drawn out of the mines, it is thrown in a heap near the mouth of the mine, or shaft; it is then loaded into carts, and carried to the river bank, where, in some instances, it is discharged from the cart at the brow of the bank, and runs down to the beach near the water's edge; then shovelled into wheel-barrows, and wheeled aboard of the boat, and discharged from the barrows by upsetting. In other instances, the carts are driven on to a kind of scaffold, furnished with a wide spout or director at the edge; by which the coal is conveyed immediately into the boats. These boats are the common James river poplar batteaux, and require three men to each. The up-stream navigation being laborious, the boats are built of light materials, and continue fit for service but a short time, (say) from two to three years; their cost, when new, from fifty to one hundred dollars. "When the river is tolerably flush of water, one of these boats will carry about two hundred bushels; but in low water their load is sometimes diminished to one hundred, and even as low as eighty bushels. Enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969) has placed new responsibilities on the mining industry. The new law, aimed at eventually solving the problem of pneumoconiosis, sets new respirable dust standards at 2 mg per cu m. Techniques employed to date have been shown to lack total effectiveness in meeting the prescribed standards. Since it is possible that even the new standards will eventually have to be lowered to effectively attack the medical problem, the need for new and more reliable methods of assuring clean respirable air will intensity. This paper presents, in a preliminary manner, both the present technical capability and growth potential of cryogenic technology for supplying miners with clean breathing air. Work with two sizes of prototype supplied-air (cryogenic-liquid) respiratiors in Union Carbide's Fawn Coal mine, will be described. Other potentially fabricable systems will be discussed and a preliminary assessment made of the potential cost of introducing cryogenic air breathing systems in coal mine service.

The Boston & Montana Reduction Works at Great Falls, Mont., was formerly the reduction works of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining Co., and continued as the reduction plant for the independent company until .June 1., 1910, when the consolidation of a large number of the operating companies of Butte was effected. It then became merged in the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as the Boston Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The history of copper converting at this plant, while not covering the entire period of the commercial use of the process in this country, does cover by far the larger part of it, and as the operations and appliances of the process have undergone many changes during the time, it may, perhaps, be of some interest to put the record of these changes into permanent form. The plan followed in the preparation of this paper has been to give first a brief chronological record of the principal events and changes and then, even at the risk of some repetitions, to give more detailed account, of some of these changes under separate headings. In selecting new or replacement mining machinery to be purchased, there are many considerations to be discussed and taken into account, the most important being the productivity of the machine and the maintenance cost and downtime to be expected with the new equipment. Productivity of a given mining machine is evaluated by the Industrial Engineering Department: analysis of potential upkeep and downtime calls for the Maintenance Department to enter into the task of evaluating new mining machines. This is a very important function of the maintenance department because a wrong decision or mistake in judgment, particularly in a commercial mining company, can be exceedingly expensive. Once the type and size of a machine is decided, an examination of units fitting the basic requirements will sometimes show one particular machine which has a distinct edge on the competitive machine. In this case, the decision is easy. However, in most cases, the performances of the machines being considered are so close that the decision becomes one that is very difficult to make on performance alone. Serious consideration must then be given to maintenance performances and features of the machine which would permit lower maintenance and less downtime.

CLAMER, * PHILADELPHIA, PA.-Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early clays, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used.. The present critical state of the supply, distribution, and utilization of coal and the necessity for pooling and zoning coals calls renewed attention to the lack of any fully adequate classification of coal. In the past coals have been classified as anthracite, semianthracite, semibitumi-nous, bituminous, subbituminous coals, and lignite, and a few special types, such as splint coal and cannel coal. But under the term bituminous coal are included a great variety of coals differing markedly both physically and chemically. The term subbituminous coal covers as great a range of chemical differences. In order to distinguish these varieties of bituminous coals it has been customary to designate coal by names derived from the place where mined, or by the name of the bed from which it is mined. Thus, in the market reports, coals are quoted as Pocahontas coal, New River or Sewell coal, Moshannon coal, Ohio coal, Williamson County coal, Jellico coal, and so on indefinitely, no limit being set as to the boundaries of the area to which a given name is applied. Nor is there any scale by which the coal from one place may be compared with the coal from some other district or some other bed. On the one hand, coals from the same district may be quite distinct and sell at very different prices or coal from the same bed may differ greatly in different districts; on the other hand, coals from different states may be so similar physically and chemically that one could replace the other in practical use without any appreciable difference in service. The following classification, arrived at after a careful review of a large number of systems of classification and of all of the recognized characteristics of coal, brings together all coals that so nearly resemble each other physically, chemically, and in heating qualities that any coal of a given type could replace any other coal of the same type and grade in use. Thus, if coals A and B are classed as of the same type and grade they have, so far as known to the writer, approximately the same heating value when burned under the same conditions, and the same character, length of flame, and properties affecting transportation and stocking; and if of the same grade, approximately the same percentage of impurities.

An increase in the number of deep wells being drilled where extreme bottom-hole temperatures are encountered, and the anticipated drilling of wells where temperatures in the range of 500°F or higher may occur, has brought about a comprehensive investigation of cementing materials and of the techniques involved in their proper usage at these elevated temperatures. Included are developments in cements, retarders, weighting materials and other cement additives which make it possible to formulate a variety of compositions to help resolve the cementing problems of these extreme well conditions. The problems associated with the selection and testing of cements are discussed, and a resume of field results is included. Previous studies on strength retrogression indicate that caution should be exercised in the selection of a cementing composition for use in high-temperature wells. It now appears that, by the addition of silica flour as a stabilizing additive to certain cements, compositions covering a wide range of slurry densities can be designed to meet extreme well conditions without strength retrogression. Improvements in cement retarders make it possible to produce a four-hour thickening time at static temperatures up to 500°F. This temperature is considerably higher than conditions presently being encountered in drilling and completion work. Inert weighting materials, used to produce 20-lb/gal or heavier cement slurries, are reviewed. INTRODUCTION As the search for oil continues, the number of wells being drilled to depths of 10,000 ft or below has continued to increase over the past decade. During 1959, there were 50,893 wells drilled in the United States for a total of 209 million ft of hole. Of this total, approximately 4.45 per cent were drilled below 10,000 ft and 0.30 per cent below 15,000 ft, with a record depth of 25,340 ft recorded (Table 1). With the drilling of this record-shattering hole comes the question, "How deep can wells be drilled?".' Limitations with respect to equipment (surface and subsurface), cementing materials and techniques would cause some concern; however, a panel of experts have agreed that the U. S. oil industry has the equipment and know-how to drill a 50,000-ft hole. The greatest deterrent would be the 700°F temperature they would anticipate encountering at this depth. Although the number of wells drilled under what is generally considered hot-hole conditions (230°F and higher) has been relatively high, each well often presents distinctly individual problems and requires separate consideration and selection of special materials, techniques and equipment. At the present time there are over 30 additives and special cements available for use in "tailoring" a cementing composition for a specific well. It is not uncommon to use three or four different additives with the basic cement to produce the desired slurry characteristics. A generally accepted procedure is to make laboratory tests on selected cementing compositions prior to pumping them into wells deeper than 12,000 ft, or where static temperatures are in the range of 260°F or higher. In some instances, it is recommended that laboratory tests be made where less severe well conditions are encountered. Prior to selecting a cementing composition for a particular well, key personnel representing the operator, drilling contractor and service company should meet to determine that each individual is acquainted with every detail which might influence cementing results and to discuss the execution of the job. For cementing hot-holes, a number of factors must be evaluated before proceeding with the operation. Consideration must be given to the following. 1. Thickening time—The slurry must remain fluid for a sufficient length of time to allow displacement down the casing and up the annular space in a primary cementing job or, in squeeze-cementing, adequate thickening time for both the build-up of a satisfactory squeeze pressure and the reversing out of excess cement. The thickening time of standard retarded cements will often be too short under extreme temperature conditions, thus involving special formulations and requiring laboratory tests to determine the proper amount of additional retarder to obtain the desired pumpability.

Upon the recommendation of its Technical Committee, The Com-pressed Air Society has adopted the following definitions of, certain terms. Displacement.-The displacement of an air compressor is the volume displaced by the net area of the compressor piston. Capacity.-The capacity should be expressed in cubic feet per minute, and is the actual amount of air compressed and delivered, expressed in terms of free air at intake temperature and at the pressure of dry air at the suction. Volumetric Efficiency.-Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the capacity to the displacement of the compressor, all as defined above. Compression Efficiency.-Compression efficiency is the ratio of the work required to compress isothermally all the air delivered by an air compressor to the work actually clone within the compressor cylinder, as shown by indicator cards, and may he expressed is the product of the volumetric efficiency (the intake pressure and the hyperbolic logarithm of the ratio of compression), all divided by the indicated mean effective pressure within the air cylinder or cylinders.

TOTAL global war is making extraordinary demands on the oil industry. Huge quantities of 100-octane gasoline, extreme service lubes, toluene and other miscellaneous products are required. 100-octane gasoline is blended from isopentane, base stock, and alkylate. Isopentane is fractionated from natural or refinery gasoline; but since only limited quantities of base stock can be made in this way, catalytic cracking is rapidly becoming the major source of base stock. Alkylate, the most important component, is synthesized from isobutane and an olefin. Extraordinary demands are forcing the full utilization of all present sources and the development of new supplies of feed stocks. Fortunately, the United States finds itself with well-developed processes already available, and this is true of the manufacture of lubricating oil as well. Toluene is now being produced by new methods from special cuts fractionated from selected crudes or from catalytically processed naphthas. Designers of refinery equipment are modifying past practices to conserve every bit of material possible.

Since their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high bearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of bearings made from tin-base or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in bearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on bearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements. AS a member of the Institute and as the president of the National Coal Association, I come before you today in a dual role. As an Institute mem-ber I welcome the opportunity to make complimentary reference to the growing support which bituminous coal operators are giving to programs looking to the advancement of the engineering profession, and to suggest plans whereby these programs may be enlarged to mutual advantage. As a representative of the bitu-minous industry, it gives me special pleasure to express the appreciation of the industry for the services ren-dered to it by members of your profession. Needless to say, there is a close relationship between the engineer and the coal operator. With increasing frequency and in the interests of the industry, the engineer is becoming more of a factor in the business of producing coal. I need look no further for an out-standing example of this encouraging trend than to Samuel A. Taylor, who not only is a bituminous coal producer but also has risen to such eminence in the engineering profession as to have been chosen the head of this great body of technical men, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. There are many coal operators whom I might mention as having achieved distinction in the engineering world, such as Howard. N. Eavenson, chairman of the .Coal and Coke Committee. And I would be guilty of a serious .oversight if I failed to make reference to Eckley B. Coxe, one of the founders of the Institute in 1871, a prominent anthracite operator and credited with several important inventions. While it is true that a. considerable number of execu-tives of coal-producing companies in this country came up through the engineering ranks. the proportion of mine executives in England, France, and Germany who are graduate engineers is much larger than it is in the United States. In France all members of the staff are engineers and such is the case in Germany up to the owner of the mine. In Germany the owner is not so frequently an engineer as is the rule in France.

The kinetics of silicate adsorption from aqueous colloidal (SO2 . nH2O) silicate sols on thoria (ThO 2) surfaces were determined at 100, 150 and 200°C in an autoclave system. The amount of chemisorbed silica on the thoria surface was determined by means of infrared spectroscopy. First order kinetics were observed in all cases with the anomalous result that the first order rate constant was found to vary with the initial amount of silica added to the system. These results have been correlated quantitatively by means of a strain model of adsorption involving two types of surface silicate bonding, both of which may be readily observed in the infrared spectrum. Initial adsorption occurs rapidly to produce one type of surface silicate followed by a slow transition to a second type of surface bonding, the latter transition representing the slow step in the adsorption process. Initial interest in silicate adsorption on thoria arose from the dispersive effect silica has on finely divided thoria in aqueous suspensions. Spaepen et al studied the equilibrium adsorption of silica on thoria and noted increased adsorption up to approximately 215°C with a notable decrease in adsorption at temperatures above 215°C. Similar results were observed by Cho and Wadsworth2 who identified two types of surface silica by infrared spectroscopy. At temperatures of 100°C and above, rapid initial adsorption occurred producing a surface species with maximum infrared absorbance at 9.4 After extended periods of time, the 9.4 species converted to a more strongly bonded surface silicate with maximum infrared absorbance at 10.3. The latter was very strongly bonded and difficult to remove by desorption in hot distilled water, while the 9.4 species could be removed more readily by similar treatment. The 9.4 and 10.3-p species were distinguishable from free unadsorbed silica which had maximum infrared absorbance at 9.1 The kinetics of the formation of the strongly chemisorbed silica (10.3) on thoria as determined by infrared examination are presented in this study. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As a source of silicate, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) or Ludox HS (30.25% SO2), DU Pont colloidal silica in aqueous suspensions, was added directly to a thoria slurry made up of one liter of distilled water and one gram of thoria. The thoria used was designated D-16-650 and was received from the Chemical Technology Div. of Union Carbide Nuclear Co. It was prepared by firing thorium oxalate at 650°C. The D-16 thoria had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 sq m per g as determined by nitrogen adsorption.* This thoria 'Determined by Unlon Carbide Nuclear Co., ORNL. had a total adsorption capacity for silicate of approximately 19.4 mg of silica per gram of thoria.1 This amounts to approximately one SiO2 molecule for every surface thoria site. Size effects in quenching steel are particularly prominent and well recognized because of the existence of a critical cooling rate separating nuclea-tion and growth transformations, as exemplified by the formation of pearl-ite, from the shear type of transformation characterizing the martensite reaction. The absence of a similar, sharply demarcating cooling rate is characteristic of precipitation hardening systems and size effects in these are correspondingly less prominent. This paper is concerned with a size effect in high-purity, precipitation-hardenable alloys which appears not to have been recognized previously. This effect is believed to result from the thermal fluctuations which inevitably occur in quenching a specimen of finite size into a cooling liquid rather than from the existence of a critical cooling rate. QUENCHING "ANOMALIES" The precipitation hardening literature contains many references to so-called anomalous quenching and aging results. By "anomalous", investigators usually meant that their alloys did not consistently harden on aging after quenching according to some anticipated pnttern: not infrequently virtually no age hardening occurred with compositions known to be precipitation-hardenable. Perhaps the most prominent series of anomalies was reported over a 15-year period by Gayler and coworkers on aluminum-copper.l,2,3,4 Working with silver-rich copper alloy, Cohen5 secured some very interesting Rockwell F hardness changes of from 1-5 Rockwell points between the first peak and valley. Fink and Smith borrowed one of Cohen's specimens and, following his heat treatment and quenching practice to the letter, secured6 very different results in which only one peak was obtained and in which the hardness level at the aging lime of Cohen's first peak was 20 Rockwell F points higher. Fink and Van Horn7 encountered serious deviations in age-hardening high purity aluminum-zinc alloys. They stated that "the discrepancies were larger than might be expected from possible experimental errors in the Brinell readings." Geisler, Barrett and Mehl8 likewise encountered anomalous hardening results in aluminum-silver alloys, securing quite different age-hardening curves from two identical specimens. They stated that "the treatments of these samples had been the same, so that the different behaviors could be attributed only to accidental variations in the quenching practice."

THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the adit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles', this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent. There is a large historical background for underground plant construc-tion. From the dim past caves have been used for dwellings, stables, storage and shops. It was natural that where caves were available their many advantages led to their enlargement to suit convenience and where they were not available but the ground conditions, topography and, drainage were favorable, to the construction of artificial caves. In the vicinity of Epernay, France, extensive underground chambers protect the manufacture and storage of champagne-an intricate and ingenious application of chemical engineering-and in recent years these plants have been mechanized by the installation of conveyor systems.
